Athens police: UGA players cleared in taxi incident

Athens-Clarke County police Monday cleared the Georgia football team of involvement in an alleged March 28 attack on a married couple in an Athens taxi.

Police said in a statement that one football player was in the vehicle, “but the investigation revealed that he acted as a peacemaker and tried to calm the situation.”

The suspects in the case “have been identified as residents of Heard County,” police said. Arrest warrants are pending and further information will be released  after they are issued, police said.

Police did not identify the player they said acted as peacemaker.

The incident has been under investigation since March 30, when the married couple filed a police report. That report stated that the couple was taking a taxi van home around 2 a.m. when the driver stopped to pick up four males in downtown Athens –  “all of whom were UGA football players, according to the [male victim].” He told police that the men cursed and threatened him and his wife and that one of the four “slapped or punched” them in the back of their heads, according to the report.

Georgia’s football team did not practice Monday, and through a spokesman coach Mark Richt declined to comment immediately on the police statement clearing players of involvement.  Richt might comment on the matter Tuesday, the spokesman said.

Tim Tucker,

Maybe you could do an article on how a UGA player was a “peace-maker” and not a criminal, as noted by GooseDawg. College Football needs some positive articles. Can you do a positive article relating to the Dawgs????? I know your initial article on this issue was not accusatory, but will a article on the players positive actions be as long and important to you as the initial story??

jaglaw, positive articles never sell papers (or hits in this case). Ever watch the local news? How many feel-good stories make the headline news? Yeah, you get the local feel-good stories at the end of the broadcast when everyone has switched off. That’s not by accident either. Anyway, it does beg the question why the football player was hangin’ with these thugs.

GooseDawg: You’re only partially correct. The bad stories do equal rating points but it’s also easier to get the information from the police etc than working to get the stories. I made a career out of writing “good” stories and they were all widely read and I won more writing awards than I could list here.

Part of the blame should be placed squarely on the shoulders of society, it loves negative news. That’s why I haven’t watched local broadcasts in forever and I won’t go back to watching that kind of scum.

As for your question about the UGA player hanging out with folks who create problems, those kinds of things can happen at any time and with anybody… Perhaps you’ve had a similar incident in your life.

Either way, feature/life style stories are always part of the new cycle.

Hope Richt will use this this incident as a teachable moment to point out how important their self-discipline and maturity is to team stability. Lord knows we have had too much immature behavior but he should also point out that UGA haters were standing ready to criticize the program in their rush to judgement . . . which I think emphasizes the need for them to mind their Ps and Qs at all times. Because of all the incidents in the past several years, Georgia football players are looked at differently and not always different in a good way. I’m sure Richt has drilled this into them many times over . . . that they represent the University of Georgia and should always be on their best behavior. Maybe that message is not getting through (in light of the kid we just kicked off the team and previous other problems). Maybe we need to be more selective in who we recruit. Maybe we need a stronger orientation to the dangers of Athens nightlife for athletes who have no self-control. I am thankful that this young man acted like he did but if the other knuckleheads in the taxi were his buds, then he needs to find better friends.

Shall we now count our blessings in that there is a forewarning with this incident and that’s for the Dawgs to keep sqeaky clean on social outings at least until after kickoff for the SC game. We might ask for Kimberly at Bleacher Reports for an article that makes up for linking team behavior directly to Mark Richt and for smearing a little of the Criminols smut on him as well. She sounds surprised that she had some criticism because she states late in the article that she likes Richt, but that was after a leading title and references to Bowdin and FSU about similarities and questioning whether Richt was into discipline or not.

For all you bloggers who assume some sort of coverup was consorted between UGA and the police, forget it! Life in Athens for atheletes does not work that way. They screw up and they usually pay the price. I am a retired journalist of 35 years. One thing I learned over that period is that a scandal does not lurk beneath every rock. The problem is a serious amount of incivility was apparently displayed by some of the black passengers inside the taxi, a certainly verbal, and possibly simple assault occurred to the victims, who, in turn, are likely guilty of making statements based on opinion to the police; Statements that the news media headline writers will have a field day with. The good point in all this is that no UGA players (outside the one “peacekeeper”) are part of this non-story. And someone will discover the identity of the “peacekeeper.” His story will be told, also. We have not heard the last of the Great Bratwurst Experience. Stay tuned!

Were they simply sitting in the taxi minding their own business as the story implies or was there some type of arguement that led up to the head slapping? I haven’t heard anything either way, but since the accuser was wrong about the 4 men being football players, I wonder what else he might have been wrong about that night.

We’ll continue to update this on Tuesday if there is more news on who the peacemaking player was.
Original Post: It’s April Fool’s Day and it’s the afternoon so by now you have had it beaten into your head that anything surprising or weird going on today is a damn dirty lie. But we’re pretty sure this is legit: a couple on the Georgia campus gets into a cab late on March 29th and is joined by four “individuals who knew the cab driver.” The individuals have bratwursts. OVER-RATED and you have proof of that? My God the only thing “obvious” is the lengths you would go to slander UGA..please and I mean this with the utmost respect..STFU thank you.

This is a good teachable moment for Coach Richt, as well as coaches everywhere really. 1 player did the right thing, but he was out too late In my opinion. Anyway, glad there were no players involved, but shouldnt have been in that situation to start with.

Glad to see no players were directly involved.
No Cover Up,
Just out of curiosity are you saying driving on the wrong side of the road, driving under suspension, and whatever else you listed should not be arrestable offenses. Usually, albiet not always, the person being arrested goes to jail because of the actions they take after being caught doing whatever illegal action they were doing in the first place. As a GT fan I will say from everything I have ever read about Richt I cannot believe he would try to cover up criminal behavior. Whoever the player was though he definitely needs to seperate himself from these “friends” or something like this is bound to happen again.
As for the bashing on Hamilton and other former or current players I don’t think true UGA fans really want to open that conversation as former and current UGA players have been involved in plenty of legal problems themselves. I would also think that if CPJ was trying to “cover up” the rape allegations he would have done it without having to have him sit out a entire year.

Dawgfighter — you are right that he doesn’t have any relatives nearby, make that, relatives, period. Coach Garner recruited the kid from Indiana where he was an orphan. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, but Montez hasn’t had the easiest life. And if you believe in karma, you might want to reconsider casting aspersions towards people and a situation you know nothing about.

As I said before when this was first reported, now that our men have been cleared of all wrong doing, I encourage all alumni and fans to pursue legal action, for slander, against the sports blogger who reported that it was UGA players without any proof. It looks like not all big black guys in Athens play football. The rascist tendencies displayed by all accusers and self proclaimed judges on this blog were disgusting!

“No wonder dog fans are so delusional, you make blanket statements with not even knowing anywhere close to the facts in which are going to make you look bad.”

Wouldn’t that BE a good example of a blanket statement? How many dog fans are in the world? Talk to them all do you?

Dawgfighter- Please don’t let your hatred for UGA and your love for mixing it up on the blogs put you on a high horse to look down on another man’s walk with the Lord. We love Coach Richt and what he stands for. He will be our coach for a very long time. You should go and support your coach instead of trying to knock down someone else.

….and I believe the comment that you took exception with was nowhere close to a “blanket statement”, but rather a very specific statement about a very narrow topic.

Maybe you should just stick to your facts and refute him, rather than resort to broad sweeping banilities about a fan base that you (by nothing more than circumastances), just happen to not be a part of.

For Dawglessville- I’ll try this again. I had forgotten how long the police blotter was. I’ll say this, I believe that Coach Richt is a very good man, and a very good coach who does a great job balancing expectations with the best interest of the his family, the players, and the university. I just wanted to note that I stand corrected but Coach Richt is still the man for the job. I believe that most people blogging would appreciate a man like Coach Richt if he was their coach.

Good for the dogs. We all often jump to conclusions and assume the worst sometimes. It could have been nationally embarrassing if it was indeed football players but it seems now that all is well that ends well. As a matter of fact it makes you wonder how much harassment would have taken place had the one football player(he had enough sense to know he had a lot to lose) not stepped in and reined in the 3 thugs.

2. Those who point out montez robinson, dude isn’t on the team anymore. I don’t think he will be let back on like Reuben Houston was either.

30-24.

This one was never a story. That does not exclude the 2 arrests of 2 Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Players since Spring Practice began, including picking a girl up and repeatedly throwing her to the ground April 2 – after 2 previous arrests by the same Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player, including beating the University of Georgia coed the first time October 20 suspended Shreveport Bowl Game and then bashing her vehicle November 30 another 2 game suspension to begin the 2010 season as all of these events happened when he was a Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player. 3 arrests by Montez Robinson as a Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player. Montez Robinson 20 played as a true freshman last year after being ranked the Number 8 best at his position in the nation, and the top football player at all positions in his state. Montez Robinson’s Arrest for beating up a girl, repeatedly picking her up Friday and slamming her repeatedly into the floor at McWhorter Hall is the Number 90 Arrest / Suspension by a Coach Richt Georgia Bulldogs’ Football PLAYER, following the March 7 arrest of one of the leading candidates to be in fact the Starting Quarterback this up-coming season who by the way should have been last year too. This is Zach Mettenberger 18 Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player arrested for obstruction, disorderly conduct and underage alcohol. The 1st Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player arrested since Spring Practice began has been suspended for at least 1 game, so he cannot be the Starting Quarterback for that game; and the 2nd Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player arrested since Spring Practice began previously was suspended for the Shreveport Bowl Game and already was suspended for both the 1st game next year AND the South Carolina game already, and has now been kicked off the team, remains in jail with family member in Alabama saying he would pay the bond but has not been allowed to pay the bond until the previous Judge who gave Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player Montez Robinson Probation, determines his punishment for violation of his Probation for previously beating up a girl.
