Athens police: UGA players cleared in taxi incident

Athens-Clarke County police Monday cleared the Georgia football team of involvement in an alleged March 28 attack on a married couple in an Athens taxi.

Police said in a statement that one football player was in the vehicle, “but the investigation revealed that he acted as a peacemaker and tried to calm the situation.”

The suspects in the case “have been identified as residents of Heard County,” police said. Arrest warrants are pending and further information will be released  after they are issued, police said.

Police did not identify the player they said acted as peacemaker.

The incident has been under investigation since March 30, when the married couple filed a police report. That report stated that the couple was taking a taxi van home around 2 a.m. when the driver stopped to pick up four males in downtown Athens –  “all of whom were UGA football players, according to the [male victim].” He told police that the men cursed and threatened him and his wife and that one of the four “slapped or punched” them in the back of their heads, according to the report.

Georgia’s football team did not practice Monday, and through a spokesman coach Mark Richt declined to comment immediately on the police statement clearing players of involvement.  Richt might comment on the matter Tuesday, the spokesman said.

I knew that this would be swept underneath the rug. You had to be stupid not to realize this. I still say they were guilty and should be kicked off the team.

Since your such loyal fans, why don’t you pool your money and spring Montez Robinson out of jail? I know most of you dog fans make meniman wage, but if enough of you get together, maybe you can be better doggie fans.

Why don’t you all pool your money and spring Montez Robinson out of jail? I bet you think he’s innocent too.

Shall we now count our blessings in that there is a forewarning with this incident and that’s for the Dawgs to keep sqeaky clean on social outings at least until after kickoff for the SC game. We might ask for Kimberly at Bleacher Reports for an article that makes up for linking team behavior directly to Mark Richt and for smearing a little of the Criminols smut on him as well. She sounds surprised that she had some criticism because she states late in the article that she likes Richt, but that was after a leading title and references to Bowdin and FSU about similarities and questioning whether Richt was into discipline or not.

This whole cover-up is being perpetuated by Urban Meyer. He has paid off the cops himself so that Richt looks good and is around just so he can beat CMR down for an additional 5 years…or longer.

With Montez Robinson gone that just provides Grantham with one more scholly to recruit the type of player he needs to bring our defense back from the dead.

I didn’t read all of the responses, so if I’m repeating someone, my apologies…guy’s you aren’t like every other college student…you represent the University of Georgia whether you like it or not…you took the money/scholarship, and with this comes a certain maturity that is expected of each and every one of you…Met should have been the standard bearer for bad behavior for this season…do not allow yourselves to be placed in situations, or with people, who could do you, the university, and your football team harm…walk away, leave, get out of there, because they know of you, whether on campus, in town, in the county(ies), or state wide…time to grow up and be smart about what you do and remember who you represent

That’s an interesting comment if you follow that link back to Chris Low. How are UGA player “cleared” as if they did something wrong? Since no actual players were named in the first place, shouldn’t the headline read , No UGA players “involved”?

I blogged yesterday and earlier today on this (AJC) and other sites that the perps could easily be visitors. See Bill King. I was surprised at my own depth of loyalty to the players and the team when proven correct. Most fans on here feel the same way and I’m glad to be associated (however obliquely) with true Dawg Fans. Our Dawg Nation can rest in peace tonight and concentrate energies toward following our coachs and team practice.

Mobile Dawg-where are you? Alt’s on here and it could steam up into retribution later. Dawg Stephen should come back. We all recognize the moniker stealers by their posts. I am really tired of media hype against the UGA program. This story,as usual, was way overblown. Let’s get back to spring practice and start the run for an SEC title. Tom, you need to get a reality check. I will take Richt and the UGA program over Paul Johnson and the wannabes at GT anyday!
