ATHENS – I’m guessing most of you will be happy to read this: Georgia’s kickoff philosophy has changed.
Kicker Blair Walsh indicated Thursday night that the much-criticized directional kickoffs –- kicks aimed to a specific spot on the field –- will yield to more deep kickoffs.
“It’s not like it was here the past two years, directional-wise,” Walsh said. “It’s a lot more use of my talent, I would say. I was fine doing what they wanted me to do. I’m a team player. I can go along with it. But it’s a lot more use of the talent, and I’m happy about it. I don’t think there’s a restraint on me anymore.”
He stopped there, wary of “giving too much away.”
But you get the idea.
New assistant coach Warren Belin is in charge of kickoffs, a role previously held by Jon Fabris, one of three assistants dismissed in December. The directional kicks became a controversial topic the past two seasons, compounded when Walsh didn’t keep them in bounds or the coverage broke down.
Walsh also said there is an aggressive approach to kickoff coverage this spring.
“From what little I know about football, I know we’re going down there and trying to bust helmets up,” the kicker said. “We’re trying to beat the guy in front of us and go get the guy.
“It’s a lot of old-school football involved in our kickoff coverage. [Belin] doesn’t like me to talk too much about what we’re doing exactly, but . . . you’re going to see a lot of guys hustling, a lot of fast, fast stuff.”
Walsh, who had 17 touchbacks last season, has a goal of at least 25 this year –- or about one-third of his kickoffs.
Sound good, everyone?

I ‘m wondering why you wait 60 hours before making a police report? This whole story seems very fishy. Why did the taxi/bus driver not call the police from the taxi , or put the four out of the taxi and then call the police from that spot. Football players but they cannot ID them. Alot of big black men go to UGA who do not play football. Just have to see how this plays out.

Think about it…..If it was you and your girlfriend, you would get the authorities involved RIGHT THEN after the cab ride. Not two days later. It also could have been more verbal than physical and the guy is mad/embarrassed about it, and this is HIS way of getting even. As a good friend of mine said, nothing good happens after midnight. Tech is lucky that it is unsafe to go out after dark in Atlanta.

don’t know why if this is true that ballplayers, especially during spring practice should be out in Athens at 2:00 am in the morning…I remember in high school that our coach would actually ride by to see if we were home after 11:00 oclock at night..That may sound a little extreme but if you wanted to play on his team you obeyed and followed his rules…With that being said i think we need to let the circumstances come out before jumping to conclusions and branding these young men for life..we still haven’t confirmed if it was football playeres or not, but i’m sure coach Richt will find out and apply the appropriate punishment…Its very easy to get on this blog and spout off about what you would do or what should be done…Walk in a coach or a teachers shoes sometime and you find out how difficult it is in dealing with some young people today and when you are dealing with 80, 90 or 100 or more all with different backgrounds you have to be careful not to overreact based on initial reports…I’m sure the appropriate punishment will be given, if warranted, when the time is right.

the ‘victim’ started the interaction by making a comment about the food…the comnment, which should not have been made anyway, could have been made with an attitude or in a disrespectful manner. Alcohol was involved, so who is to be believed and why would anyone’s report be trusted with a car full of drunk and/or wasted folks late night and running off at the mouth…and reported way too late ( 3 days) to make any report credible. Comments here made by posters about racism and etc. are weak and without any verifiable evidence. If this was all so onesided, then the police should have been called as soon as the victim was away from the alleged offenders. \Maybe victims didnt want to make the report with alcohol or other substance possibly in their system?? Who knows. But the fact that so much time passed and there was at least alcohol involved during ‘late night’ makes this very speculative and nearly impossible to establish the truth conclusively. Let it go….and mind your own business and keep your late night comments to yourself if you dont want to be involved. Maybe the victims acted or sounded very racially biased…we dont know and probably never will….too late and too much ’substance’ involved to know the real deal

I guess it shows just how bad things had gotten, when we get excited that our kickoffs, defensive tackling, and secondary coverage will be played like they’re supposed to be played. Good riddance Fabris and Martinez! I wonder how Richt feels when he hears Berlin yell at the defense, “who taught you how to tackle the last 5 years?” Or when he hears Willie taught his secondary to “never look back at the ball” when covering a receiver. Richt should be ashamed of letting this kind of crap go on in his program.

Constitutional reminder: Innocent until proven guilty. And it’s kinda hard to start throwing blame around when no one knows who did what. I find it hard to believe that 4 people (regardless of who)would get in a cab and immediatly start abusing a couple who were quietly minding their own business. There is obviously more to this story than has come out so far…..but until the players (if they indeed were players) are id’d..then it didnt happen.

#1 Most of the taxis in Athens are vans that can hold 10-12 people. It is a little tight mind you, but when the bars close, everyone piles in…especially if you live on the east side of town.
#2 Football players out at 2:00 a.m. has been happening for years. I started at UGA in 95 and worked downtown for 4 years — it was a common occurrence to see football players at the bars that late — never on Fridays before the game but often on Saturdays after games. This will happen all throughout the season. Richt enforces curfews sometimes, but I’ve never heard of a curfew on a Saturday night in early spring.
It sounds like there is a lot to sort out — but if it comes to light that these events really did occur, I hope they kick all four of the players off the team, regardless of who they are. What an embarrassment.

Sounds like MORE Smart coaching from Coach Belin. That directional stuff was moronic. Personally I would be happy to let the opposition start every series on the 20. If you kick it deep enough there is no runback and no chance for breaking a play. But letting them start on the 40 due to an out of bounds kick, as happened way too many times last year, is just stupid. When you have a kicker with a leg like Walsh has it is crazy to not turn him loose and see how deep he can kick it.
The difference in the two schools
April 2nd, 2010
9:42 am
GT and UGA have some thug players and there are seemingly just thugs lurking close to BOTH of the schools and interacting with the students. The difference it seems, is that at Tech, they have knives, guns and trunkfulls of “stuff”. Also at tech, they have one or two “players” that were hauled in on rape charges.
If these kids are UGA players or students ………….get to the bottom of it all and then deal harshly with them. Thugs of any stripe ( student, non student, white, red, yellow, and yes, black ) need to be quickly and harshly dealt with by the authorities. If one of them did slap a women, then that should be publically broadcast and show the “man” for what he is ……………. a coward. You can injure a person badly with the right force to the head …………internal bleeding, etc.
Facts need to govern this.

I’d love to go to college for free. The govt. says I make too much money for financial aid. Yeah right. Coach Richt, I might not run a 4.3 forty or vertical jump 40 inches but I can tackle and guarantee that I won’t get in trouble and I would value my college education. Jon Fabris is a fine coach and will do well at Louisville. I played 4 years under Coach Fab at UGA and know that the reason he has used directional kicking for the past 20 years is that he has had success doing it. While he was at Iowa State and Kansas State, his kickoff (and punt return) teams finished in the top 10 statistically on a yearly basis. A coach can give his players the plan, but it’s their job to execute it.

Big Dawg, would you have all the “large” black players kicked off the team? No one has proved that these were football players. No one has even identified any of them by name. So, who gets kicked off the team? I also learned long ago that there are usually at least two sides to most stories. I think that ACC police have shown they do NOT cover up anything related to UGA athletes, so I think we can trust them to make a thorough investigation. If it is proved that football players were involved, and if they are identified and charged, then certainly suspensions are in order until the legal processes are finished, as well as dismissals for those found guilty. Right now, I believe that the perpetrators were probably not UGA football players.

bill h, I hear what you’re saying man. Let’s point out the obvious though. Hope I’m wrong, but 4, countem, 4 big ole hulking football player’s (maybe), now on the other hand you have this fellow, let’s just say that it was you and your girlfriend or wife or something. You still with me? Let’s say just for arguments sake that both parties have been indulging in the spirits a bit much. Are you trying to convince a normal thinking person that you would antagonize 4 men while crammed into a vehicle. I’ll even give you that. But you would have to had to have slugged one of these guys in order for me to see your point. The fact of the matter is that these guys know the rules and should have just left the scence. You know how it is when a gang of guys get together and drink, they generally become a bit rowdy.
If these were athletes attending the University of Georgia then they should be kicked off the team and kicked of campus. I really hope that this isn’t true, if so at least maybe one or two of them hopefully weren’t involved. The truth will come out soon enough. I have all ideas Rich already knows what went down and all parties involved are. I suspect he’s just waiting to see what the law is going to do. No matter what the law decides to do, if they were his players then they should be told to take a hike.

You folks that keep criticizing Bobo need to look at the facts. Last year we put up over 40, and had to, to beet South Carolina and Arkansas. Remember that Bobo was coaching an offense that lost its quarterback that was taken number one overall in the NFL draft, a running back that was taken number 12 overall and a receiver that was taken in the second round. Also, he lost his best offensive lineman before the season started. I remember Bobo’s playing days, and he did not have SEC caliber physical talent. He played well because of his mind. Give him time to grow. He will be a head coach soon somewhere, and if you are a Dawg fan, you better hope that if it is in the SEC, it is at UGA.

Well dam……None of us knows what really happened and all of our comments are based on pure speculation……but…….like a few have said on here……..it doesn’t matter if my wife and I were on a rikshaw in Mongolia……….those 4 would’ve had to kill me after they even had a coherent thought of touching either of us.
It sounds like the plaintiff is either just making this up or exaggerating the circumstances.
Unfortunately….on this blog……most of our players are already convicted while the accusations are still sitting on the desk of a Magistrate Judge.
If anything beyond a mild verbal confrontation is true….then these guys…whatever color……need to stand in front of a judge. I’m not saying throw the book at them……but they need to understand that this type of behavior is intimidating and could result in them getting the hell beat out of them if they challenge the wrong guy.

This taxi story has teeth, fellow Dawgs. The cabbie is not cooperating but someone or ones who know the thugs has been talking plenty. They contacted the police when the story first broke. Richt is too soft again, not putting any real pressure on players to “out” the goons. Eventually there will be an inside whistleblower, but CMR has to guarantee some kind of immunity. Word on Jackson Street is that 3 were varsity players, maybe one starter, and the fourth one was on the practice squad but trying to make varsity.

When you merely react to these charges and police reports as Coach Richt has been doing for the last four years, then players just learn to not get caught. Richt is a good man so it is not intentional, but he needs to build some character among his players so we don’t have recurrent episodes like this one.

I think Meyer is tired of hearing about how Tebow’s throwing motion is so bad. It makes it look like Meyer didn’t care about Tebow’s future, like Meyer only used him to win a national championships, and whether that’s true or not, the fact is, after spending all those years at Florida, Tebow was not ANYWHERE NEAR Nfl-ready. Tebow has had to completely rebuild his delivery to try and get drafted in the 1st round instead of the 2nd or 2rd round, taking snaps under center, etc. It is hard to believe Florida did so little to help Tebow get ready for the NFL. Ahhhh remember last year when all the fans where screaming at people who questioned CMR’s coaching style…how could you, if you were a real fan dare to question why they didn’t kick deep, why they wouldn’t adapt the defense, why they would stick with a game plan that would put the weight of the team on Cox’s to make a play, etc., etc…those same knowledgeable fans who would kiss the feet of the almighty 10 win a year average coach by asking where you played football, where did you coach, and the blind trust to CMR that went on and on by these “FAN’s”…you aren’t a real DAWG fan if you didn’t blindly follow the Pied Piper of Sanford and march lock step with his brilliance…wellll, it appears that things that were questioned last year are being changed for this season, doesn’t it…discipline and consequence for penalties (what a novel idea)…the defense is being changed, the kicking team is being reworked, CMR is getting out of his CEO mode and actually getting involved, Bobo is getting the time to concentrate on the QB’s more, and list is going on…next you’ll see AJ in there during critical games returning punts when the DAWG’s need a boost…hey, he’s finally acting like a real head coach…apologies accepted

Go to the grill and see who purchased those brats; see if a credit card was used. Check security cam footage. Get the GBI involved. And if civil rights were violated get the FBI involved. Homeland Security might have an angle in this one! Hey, they could be a disgruntled al-Qaeda sleeper cell flexing its muscle. Come on! I do not believe a word of this. 60 hours later? This sound like something the late Senator Kennedy would do visa-a-vis Chappaquiddick.

Rock E. Topp: I tell you who ought to be afraid, that’s Da-Rick Rogers coming over the middle for a reception in Sanford Stadium. The personification of alligator arms. “No, No Coach Dooley! I told you that I wanted to redshirt this year!” Sorry Da-Rick, you ain’t gettin’ off dat easy. You see they ain’t got nobody else. If you dance you got to pay the piper.

Good article here about how 2010 is a year of MASSIVE change for the Gators. All key offensive positons were lost, and key defensive positions, and the key coach–Strong. Keep in mind, in 24 years of coaching, Meyer has never won a championship without Charlie Strong. Many think he got lucky, like Bowden did with Richt.
#1- No team that has been ranked #1 in recruiting by ESPN has ever gone on to win a National Championship
#2- No Gatorade Player of the Year QB, in 25 years, has ever gone on to win a National Championship
Good article on Florida’s tough 2010 season:

I would HATE to have Blair Walsh set a goal more in line with most high school kickers and try to get 50% unreturnable. My friend has a son, who kicks here in Gwinnett, who is probably D2 prospect and he kicked 65% last year as a junior. Drew Butler kicked about 75% out of endzone while at the Ridge. Come on King, learn your football better.
