(Updated 11:30 a.m.)
Justin Anderson seems intrigued and excited about his move from offensive line to defensive line, where he’ll probably play the nose position in Georgia’s new 3-4 defense.
Anderson said he first heard rumblings about a possible move in January but didn’t believe it would happen until coach Mark Richt called him into his office early last week.
“What was explained to me was that I was needed more on the defensive line than the offensive line,” Anderson said. “Because the offensive line has some depth with Tanner [Strickland] and Trint [Sturdivant] coming back [from injuries] and on the defensive line we lost Kade [Weston] and Jeff [Owens and Geno Atkins]. So we need to fill some bodies on defense. So I was like, ‘Of course. Change can’t hurt.’”
Anderson won’t be able to practice at his new position until summer, because he’s sidelined this spring after January surgery on his right shoulder. In the meantime, he plans to “learn as much as I can” from attending D-line meetings and studying the playbook, and he plans to drop 13 or 14 pounds to play the new position at about 320.
Anderson played on both the offensive and defensive lines at Irwin County High School. He said he was recruited mostly as an offensive lineman, although he noted that Georgia Tech wanted him as a defensive lineman.
“I feel like I got better as an offensive lineman [at Georgia], but injuries set me back,” Anderson said. “I just haven’t had a good career yet. I’m thankful I have two more years left to do what I can do.”
————————————-
Here’s an update on backup offensive lineman A.J. Harmon’s injury in Saturday’s scrimmage: He has a high ankle sprain, UGA said this morning, and will be sidelined for the remainder of spring practice.
On an earlier blog, someone asked about tailback Dontavious Jackson’s performance in the scrimmage. Jackson did not participate because of an ankle sprain.
Others who didn’t scrimmage because of injuries: OLB Justin Houston (shoulder), WR Marlon Brown (shoulder), WR Israel Troupe (hamstring) and TE Bruce Figgins (hamstring). None of those injuries are believed to be severe.
Full report on Saturday’s scrimmage is here.
————————————-
Here’s tight end Aron White’s take from late last week on the quarterbacks:
“I think they’re all doing really great. [Zach] Mettenberger has come out there and continued to perform. Logan Gray is probably in the best shape he’s ever been in; I think he looks like a specimen. Aaron [Murray] has been doing very well also; he’s a guy who’s a tremendous worker and puts in a lot of time outside practice. . . . It’s just so hard to tell at this point. . . . Whoever the coaches put in there, I feel like is going to get the job done, because all of them are very capable.”
————————————
No football practice today. Georgia practices Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday this week. Saturday will be the second scrimmage of the spring in Sanford Stadium.

If the running game is clicking early and the D shows much improvement, we could win 9 or 10 this year.I hope these 3 new defensive coach’s can change the game prep, game day mojo and get us playing great right off the bat. Boy, some games under Willie we really looked lost.

Lots of teams have players move form 1 side of the ball to the other to help the team at a position where there’s depth or experience issues. Florida has a defensive guy moving to tight end because of his size for blocking. So it’s normal for a player to make a move to help his team.
Pollack wasn’t a DE originally, but turned out 3 time All-American, so the UGA Coaches know what they’re doing.

It seems like Mett would be in the lead right now, and with his size and big arm I think he has the most upside since Murray is undersized. Too bad Mett decided to get arrested over spring break and ruin his chances…nice call there Zach…I hope it was worth it.

Tell me how in the world that the diamond dogs up by 8 runs lead heading to the 9th inning and lose the game. this is the worse coaching job ever by Peterno, its not only this game many others ended with similar fashion. This is unacceptable, Georgia is very inconsistent team and this totally lies on Peterno shoulder. you talking about miracles, you damn right miracles are happening but to the opponent teams who are whopping our butts every week! sorry I know its a football blog but Im a dawg and I hate to see this rubbish without commenting.

Of course Aaron White will be pulling for his high school teammate Logan Gray. But Logan’s No. 3 right now with the scrimmage stats. Murray is No. 1 with his 67% completion rate, and Zach is No. 2. I have Zach No. 2 because of his lack of leadership skills, particulary, his off-the-field decision making. But after Zach’s 70% completion day, and no interception day in the scrimmage, Zach is closing the gap.

I think Justin Anderson’s move to the defensive side will work out just fine. I really like his attitude towards the move and his willingness to dive in and learn all he can while getting over the injury.
I agree with Dog Dawg that it does seem a long time for some of the injuries but I hope that the word out of camp is true and non are very severe and these guys can get out there and learn their positions quickly.
As far as the QB race is concerned that has been beaten to death in other blogs this weekend and there really is nothing more that can be added till after the G-Game.

The good news for UGA is, you got 3 Elite 11 QB’s in Logan, Zach, and Aaron. Hutson Mason, the 4th UGA QB, just threw for 5500 yards and 55 td’s with 72% completion rate and is a Parade All-American and won’t be on campus for a couple more months–nice size–love the guy’s skills. Aaron and Zach were the highest ranked QB’s coming out of high school, but none of that matters now.
Propos to Zach Mett:
I am most impressed that Zach’s footwork has vastly improved, he seemed 1000 times better in his accuracy, just like he said. Zach went 2 for 20 last spring 2009, so 7 for 10 in 2010 is an amazing improvement. Zach also beat Aaron and Logan when it came to total yards, longest pass, and average yards per catch. And to throw ZERO interceptions, can’t tell you how important that is in 2010–might be the #1 most important thing for the UGA offense to improve, besides recovering fumbles. Zach’s the funniest guy on the UGA team–he can really keep guys light–Zach could use that humor to become a leader–VERY likable guy–like a Bradshaw or Farve or Moreno or Pollack in that regard.

You will win 7 games at best this year. Gray is your best bet for QB this year. The 2 freshmen will make a ton of mistakes and you will be calling for their heads just like you did for Cox. Cetain loses are Florida, Tenn, Aub, and Tech. South Carolina is likely a lose too.

Murray seems to be the sentimental favorite for some reason, but there has been nothing to suggest that he has set himself apart from Mett. All things being equal, it would be hard to pass up on Mett’s size and arm strength. However, I would be nervous about what Bobo would do if we had a guy like Mett taking the snaps. We’d turn in to a Pac 10 team circa mid-00’s throwing the ball all over the place like its freaking flag football. Bobo would like nothing more. Mett is his dream.

I agree the QB race is being talked into the ground! But, it’s the real appealing story of the spring, here goes: I like Murray for his arm+athleticism. With him starting behind a vet off line and beside 2 proven R Backs, we could lead the SEC in rushing and THAT should mean something! However, Mett’s cannon intrigues me, because if we ever have the off line to protect a true pocket passer, it’s now! He could really throw it all over the field and put scary points on the board. I don’t like anything I’ve seen out of Gray, other than his attitude. He seems to be a real team guy, and we’ve got depth issues at reciever, so I think we should slide him over there. Well, there you have it, my take on the QB race. Since coach Richt obviously reads this blog, maybe he’ll take my advice! We’ll see come spring, it ought to be interesting, if nothing else!

Out of the 5 I see Florida as the one to possibly beat the Dogs the others should be a win. However this being college football you just never know. That is what makes it so interesting. The QB mistakes you speak off I anticipate but I feel the line and running game will help our new QB find his way in this system. Also the new defense I feel will help get teams offensives off the field more giving better chances for scoring drives from our offense.

Lets be real stinger, CMR figured out he needs to play SEC football when he plays any ACC team. Good hardnose hitting, tackling, big strong hard to tackle running backs. Big strong O line and whip the others up front. I’m no big dog fan but thats just the facts. I would love to see Tech be competitive with UGA. I had 2 older brothers, one went to Tech the other to UGA. So I am no hater either way. But thats the way it is!

If we want to contend for the SEC we must be a power running team. CMB should utilize our two fullbacks from scrimmage more. How about 6 carries from the fullback position.? Let’s play to our strengths, the offensive line and our backfield. What is CMR’s record when we have a back rush for over 100 yards? It’s not hard to deduct that perhaps that should be priority #1. The Vols are beatable and so are the Gayturds. We could be very good this year.

Dawgs have won 10 (or more) games in 6 of CMR’s 9 seasons. Only 1 team on the Dawgs 2010 schedule can match that level of success. Considering the talent returning, improved D coaching, and the loss of talent for the other SEC-east teams (and gt), I expect the Dawgs to do much better this year – 11 wins seems very do-able. I think 9 wins would actually reflect a poor season. Expectations SHOULD be high for the Dawgs.

run the ball, I’m not confident that Bobo even knows what a fullback is. He probably did at one point, but it has slipped his mind. Bobo has not utilized a fullback for anything significant since 2007. Bobo completely abandoned the I formation in 2009 for mysterious reasons. I really think that Richt has gradually turned more and more control of the offense over to him and the results speak for themselves. We are evolving in to a west coast Pac 10 type of offense that puzzy foots around the field and gets smacked in the mouth by big, athletic, and well coached defenses. Needless to say, that won’t cut it in the SEC.

I agree that Mett’s footwork has gotten significantly better. However, getting better from being a Frankenstein puts things into perspective.
The reason why people are behind Murray is because of his Elite 11 status #2 all time behind Stafford, his compelling senior season coming off a broken leg and leading his team to a state championship. That shows will, leadership, toughness, desire… all the things that make a great quarterback. He also has a very quick release, can throw on the run and is an accurate passer. I think the starting role is his to lose.
Regarding the Taliban Trade School, we’ll beat them again, only this time by 2 TD’s!!!

That’s the best his High School teammate can say about him? Clearly destined for 3rd place if the guy who should be his #1 supporter isn’t even talking about his QB ability.

I will pour a jack on Ice in about 2 hours. Tell me again whay you shouldn’t be a top 5 team before the UT game? UGA has a NC schedule that 8 of the top 15 teams could ride right to the Glass football, but not RICHT.

The sky is the limit with the team this year. My guess is that Richt is low keying it, but make no mistake about it, the Dawgs are loaded this year!!! With a break here and there, Dawgs can, and should, run the table. Of course the conference opposition will be tough, always is, but the out of conference schedule is terribly weak this year with Louisiana, Colorado, Idaho State and of course Tech who looks very weak again by SEC standards. My guess is that the Ga. Fl. game will once again decide who represents the East in the SECCG against Bama.
Looking forward to G-Day and the upcoming season!

Florida fans live in the past. Right now, Brantley is completing about 40% of his passes. Mett & Murray are completing aorund 70%. We live in the present here at UGA. And the present is lookin’ might fine for UGA, offense not good presently for Florida. Maybe by the Alabama game they’ll have improved without Tebow, Hernandez, and no go-to WR’s or RB’s but it’s doubtful.

Other SEC players are switching from offense to defense, like Jul. Jones of Alabama, switching over to safety because Alabama lost 8 players on defense.

One of the biggest reasons we lose is Evans scheduling. UF and Alabama played 3 weak sisters last year, we played one – change our schedules, our results may be different. This year – 2 weak sisters, same as UF – we’ll see what happens.
This is not to minimize our penalties, lack of cover on kick offs, and Willie’s terrible game planning sometimes, but the other is a factor as well….

Florida will go 5-3 in the SEC again under Meyers for the 3rd time in the last 6 years. It’s a rebuilding year. Meyer lost 13 starters, and 5 coaches. On offense, they have a new QB, throwing at about 40% completion rate this Spring, new TE to try and replace Hernandez–leading receiver gone, no experience at WR, 1 rb with experience to try and replace Tebow–leading rusher last year was a QB, and Addazio coming off a year where Gators scored 8 less points per game and gave up over 25 sacks on offense.

A touchdown pass from QB Rex Grossman and gave Florida a 20-13 advantage. There would be no more scoring on the day, as the Georgia offense finished 0-13 in 3rd down conversions and Florida held on for the upset victory.
The loss proved to be the only blemish on Georgia’s record that season. Although they finished 13-1 and went on to win the SEC championship, the defeat at the hands of their hated rival almost certainly cost the Bulldogs a shot to play for a national title. –

We do seem to have a lot of players with injuries that just drag on and on. While they don’t contribute, they do take up athletic scholarships. Wouldn’t it be prudent to identify the cronic injury-prone and give them a medical scholarship in order for them to get their degree, while freeing up athletic scholarships for those who can play and contribute. I hope CMR can really evaluate talent and last year was just a fluke…I hope the QB race is earned and not appointed like last year…will it be Met, Murray, or Gray that earns it…I’d hate to see any of these QB’s loose out on the job because CMR pulls another experiment…he’s the guy who picked CWM as his DO and Bobo (a QB coach) as his OC, then Cox as his QB and didn’t realize, or didn’t care, until the heat was on, and only then did he become more involved with the offense and then had to fire CWM and some other staff…he has the pieces of the puzzle before him, now let’s see if he can put it together…

HE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PLAY JOE COX LAST YEAR!
Gray-Will never be QB at UGA
Mett-Not ready last year as true freshman
Murray-Hurt and not ready. Would have been a wasted year to play him a couple of games.
No Joe Cox in 2009=losses to Arkansas, South Carolina, ASU and Auburn.

YELLOW HAMMER,
Does that mean the Yellow Jackets should not expect too much in their swith to the 3-4. Also, GT lost many weapons on offense while the Dawgs return all of their offensive weapons. My bet is the return of #77 and #89 will vastly improve the run game which will take the pressure off of the QB.
As for GT, they will be OK in the weak ACC, but they will struggle out of conference.

The run game will take pressure off of a 1st year redshirt freshman qb? Not so fast my friend. What if opposing defenses stick 8 or 9 in the box and effectively shut down the run which then forces the qb to beat you?

I was going back looking at the blogs. Who is this blue max dude? He aint very smart or knowledgeable about sec football and especially about pay. He said Saban would leave Bammer at the first offer of more money. What? Saban took a million dollar pay cut to step down from the Dolphins to the Bama job. And his name was never mentioned by anyone as a candidate when the ND and USC jobs came open earlier this year. Anyone notice that? When those jobs came open Satan’s name was noticeably absent from the list of candidates of both schools. If its all about the money and the biggest name in college football in ND and a wealthy private school like USC can’t come up with the money to hire Satan than who can? Some of you guys are so profound in your ignorance of college football that you just need to shut up.

DawginLex …don’t get so excited…last year was a throw-away year after the Ginga Assassin showed his flaws…Gray should have played against some of the weaker teams regardless and then you know whether Gray would be at another position, or he would have an edge at QB…I agree that there is no way that Met could have played last year, but I have serious doubts that he has advanced that much that he is ready to go out of the gates this year…Murray was healed up by the UT game, but I agree that he shouldn’t have started that game, but he should have played against Vandy, then had a bye week, then played some major time against the Gators, and then stated the rest of the year…this could have been 6 sure games, and the bowl game for experience…at least you would know what you have, or don’t have in Murray…BTW, I know Murray and his family and he was able to go…so now you have the coaches scratching their heads watching controlled scrimmages where everyone looks pretty good…this just may be another throw away season…put a couple of “L’s” on the board and it’s wait until next year once again…

We struggled with Stafford as a true freshman, but Zach & Aaron have been around a year and know the playbook. Don’t worry Stinger, if our defense can improve we’ll win plenty of games.
I hope Saban will stay in the SEC, even if it means Bama dominates again. But it’s been his tendency to move around. Maybe it’s the challenge or turning a program around. Who knows.
Michigan will probablly be looking for a coach next year. Nice tradition, easy to get players and they haven’t won a NT in a long time.

I agree, Alabama is rebuilding with losing 8 defensive starters (didn’t look sharp against Texas against Freshman QB–almost got beat), and Florida is in a free fall (Coach in meltdown, 13 starters gone, 5 coaches quit, etc.), and most importantly, it’s undeniable that Mark Richt has ALWAYS responded to a season of adversity with a Championship season–always. I don’t know how many coaches could have gone 8-5 in the SEC, after starting 4-4, with a -16 turnover margin. Georgia is really lucky to have Mark Richt.

Yep, that’s the facts if you look at Georgia’s history under Coach Richt. 2010 will be a Championship run year for Georgia, no doubt. The schedule is easy, our offense is the best in the SEC, and our defense and special teams will both improve with the new coaches, and with Florida’s offense, and Alabama’s defense both gone, there’s just no excuse. Georgia should finish 14-0, but you never know. Georgia does have a few tough games like Florida, Auburn & Ga Tech, but as luck would have it, none come until the ninth game of the year. The teams should be all systems go by the 9th game.

Paul, Bama and UF are not rebuilding; they are reloading. If you read any of the national pubs, you will see both are picked to win their divisions. UGA is the team in free fall. They have gone 4-4 in 2 of the last 4 seasons in the SEC; have lost to Vandy and Kentucky at home, so the other teams are also really lucky to have Richt at UGA. Our dilemma is to have him win just enough to not get fired.

UGA sure better go undefeated in 2010. If you look at the games, you see why:
South Carolina- terrible running game, worst in the SEC
Arkansas- No defense, our offense should put up 50 on these guys, Cox had his best day against them last year
Tenn- 6-6 this year. They really are in horrible shape offensively. Dooley’s not a winner.
Florida- offense in really bad shape–lost QB, lost #1 rusher, lost #1 receiver, running backs have fumble issues, no experience at QB, TE, WR, OR RB, offense trending downward (scoring down 8 a game compared to 2008)
Auburn–no defense
Georgia Tech- no defense, no balance in offense–all run game

Saban is known for having rebuilding years. He’s either up or down. Went 7-6 at Alabama. Saban will likely head to Michigan in 2011, so if you know his history, this is likely his last year at Alabama.
Meyer is either hot or cold. At Florida, Meyer has a rebuilding year, pretty much every other year. His SEC record in 5 seasons includes 2 already at at least 3 losses. No way Meyer wins a National Championship in 2010. But in 2011, he’ll compete for it again, if he’s still there. If Meyer coaches in 2010, it will be his last year. He’s a quitter.

If you know SEC football, you know that for both Meyer and Richt, their best years cam AFTER a season where they finished #2 or #3 in the SEC East. Both of Meyer’s 2 Natlional Championships came AFTER a #2 or #3 SEC East finish. Richt’s #2 and #3 national ranking’s years (2002 & 2007) both came AFTER finishing #2 or #3 in the SEC East. In 2010, Meyer finished #1 in the SEC East, so history tells us, Meyer will not win the National Championship in 2010. History also tells us, Richt will finish #1, #2 or #3 in the country in 2010, he always does after a bad season–ALWAYS. Of course, so does Meyer.

The onyl way Georgia will have a great year is if #1, Georgia stops giving the ball away on offense, #2, Georgia starts taking away the ball on defense.
