5 sacks for the defense sounds great, and this is against the top 3 quarterbacks. How many sacks did the first team get versus the second team? Top two running backs averaged 5 yds per carry after taking out their long run, good to see. Good completion percentages from top 2 quarterbacks. Good mobility by Murray. Where is Logan Gray’s vaunted mobility and accuracy, same as last year? Overall, good things shown during the scrimmage! Anyone missing Willie or Joe??

This is the kind of blog post I’ve bene looking for. Now we know what’s cooking.
King averaged 13 ypc and Ealey over 7 ypc–WOW! Caleb King might have that breakout year everyone’s been dreaming about for him.
Wooten averaging over 24 ypc, going to get a lot of opportunities since AJ Green’s going to get the best DB, and get coverages rolled to his side. If Wooten keeps this up, and I think he will, Wooten could take a lot of pressure off of AJ and open up running lanes for the RB’s.
Most dissapointed with Logan Gray. 42% completion, longest pass 12 yards, an interception, and 3 sacks. That’s terrible.
Murray had the 2nd best day–67% completion rate, long pass of 40 yards, 1 td, no sacks, but that 1 interpcetion drives you nuts.
How about Zach Mett, 70% completion rate, 65 long pass, averaged 22 yards a completion. 2 sacks wern’t bad. AND ZERO INTERECEPTIONS!!!!
#1 Zach
#2 Murray
#3 Gray

I think Logan is just delaying the inevitable. He needs to move to either WR or DB or both. Also, looking good for a punt returner. UGA coaches need to make a fast move and narrow to Zack and Murray to increase reps. UGA’s not deep at WR or DB, so Logan could help one or both.

Looks like Mett is the real deal. He has a rocket for an arm and good football sense. If he can stay out of trouble which I think he can, he could become an outstanding drop back quarterback. Gray needs to find another position otherwise it’s a waste of a scholarship.

the defense will not look good for several months. It’s new, it’s complex, and it will probably be August before they’re performing at game-ready level. Grantham will have them ready for the big SEC match-ups. Keep in mind, the defense is going up against the best WR, QB, and RB’s in the SEC, and they have a brand new defense to learn, so it will be a while before the defense catches up to the offense.
But the offense looked excellent. Looking good folks.

Big Hutson Mason fan–Mason threw for 5500 yards and over 55 td’s his senior year. He is MUCH better than Gray–no contest. If Murray gets hurt, Mason will be the back-up. Mason has excellent size and completed over 70% of his passes, with a 5.5 td to int ratio.

Come on guys. This is a double edge sword. If the D would of stepped up everyone would be complaining about the offense. Hot points are the D got to the QB and made some turnovers. Something we didnt do last year. So well done to the D. They gave up a few big plays but on the bright side of that at least our offense can make the big play. Just relax everyone its good to see pleasant numbers on both sides of the ball. Overall i think that went well and Murray should be the overall leader at this point.

Mikes dog,
High school stats are nothing but an indication of an athlete’s abilities and potential. It means nothing if you do not know the offensive scheme and plays. For Mason he is still very early in his learning curve so don’t hold out to much hope for him playing this year. From just the stats reported I would say Grey has dropped to number 2 with Murry leading but all that can change between now and the first regular season snap. Let’s wait till the G-game to get a better idea of both the QB situation and the defensive adjustment to the 3-4.

There will be 4 or 5 more scrimmages before the Spring game in April, so Logan could rebound.
Looking ahead to the season, Games 2 & 3 against S. Carolina and Ark present problems for our defense, ARK especially. But, IF we can get through those 2 games with a win, the defense won’t be tested again until the 9th game against Florida, then games 11 & 12 against Aubrun and Ga Tech.
So, if the offense and special teams can carry the defense in games 2 & 3, the defense should be in great shape by the 9th game against Florida.

Seriously, what is this man love for Logan? ” he is a great athlete, got to get him on the field some way or some how” Really? What has he DONE to deserve such accolades? Nothing from what I have observed! Can someone please explain? Because some AJC writer or radio announcer says we HAVE to play Logan somewhere on the field, makes it so? Again, I have not seen any “wow” in Loagn to justify him taking a starting position from another recruit or starter just because “we have to get him the field” attitude.

I am REALLY worried about South Carolina, because they have a GREAT defensive coaching staff. They’ll be hard to score on. But our defense and QB’s will still be really inexperienced by game 2, so it’s gonna be one of the hardest games for us to win all season because of where it comes in the season and the quality of the defense. If Carolina’s running game kicks into gear, they could be a tough out in the East.
Then the Ark offense just puts up 35 a game. W

Base on those stats, the D gave up 487 yards (319 passing and 168 rushing.) However, the bottom line is 14 points and they scored one TD; a net of 7. I hate reading comments that Grantham was a bad hire how the heck can you base that opion off one scrimage??? The defense is still learning. $750K – How many times do we have to explain it to you, the salaries for the football coaches, and all coaches for that matter, come from the Athletic Department through donations, ticket sales, television revenues, and bowl games. They do not come from any of the tuition or fees that the students pay for. The Athletic Department then contributes monies back to the general scholarship fund to help with pay for other scholarships based on academics.

i agree with “Why@1:10pm…, what has Logan Gray shown to make people think he’s a special talent? how fast does he run the forty? is he exceptionally quick? is he as strong as an ox? he’s been in the program almost 4 years, why couldn’t he beat out joe cox? it doesn’t appear that he’s a great thrower, mentally it doesn’t seem as though he has a grasp of the offense. also, he hasn’t set the world on fire with his punt return duties, all he does is fair catch returns. i don’t believe he has ever had a return longet than 15 yards, and i have never seen him return a kick-off. you come from high school with great stats, but your talent is commiserate with whoever else had talent in your high school games(ask joe cox). if he played against untalented kids, he should have had great stats. rember the cream always rises to the top, and the not so creamy is just something artificial, lacking the best ingrediants. it may look good, but the taste is lacking. missouri calls itself “the show me state”, well what has he shown? not even flashes, much less real talent! i believe the coaches see this also, and that’s why he’s never been part of the playing rotation. all-in-all, it’s been a waste of a good scholarship, that couldv’e been used on one of the players they allowed to get away because of scholarship limits.

Yes, the defense gave up a lot of yards (almost 500) and yes it was only a scrimmage. However, an underlying fact in all this is that our defenses was on the field the ENTIRE scrimmage. I would like to think in a real game our defense would not be on the field the ENTIRE time, So the fact that we gave up nearly 500 yards doesn’t tell the story. And don’t forget that in a scrimmage everyone plays (1st to 5th string), so the starters (which really haven’t been decided yet) weren’t on the field the whole time. The fact that we are still installing the defense and we still were able to get 5 sacks (and I’m sure more pressures, based on the number of sacks) and two int’s (one which scored a td) speaks volumes. I would like to see who was credited for the sacks, and I’m glad to see Rambo and Dent standing out in the new d. Can’t wait for more! Hunker Down Hairy Dawgs!

I don’t why everyone is gettin so mad at. The D did pretty good a couple of picks and some sacks. Plus he offense did good. The starting QB Aaron Murray did great, he had no sacks and the only downfall was he threw a pick. Not to shabby I’ll take it anyday. Mettenburger did alright NO PICKS and he had accuracy. Runnin backs are superb. Caleb and washaun are ready to go. Not worried at all bout them. WR’s will be fine. Yeah we do have some injuries’ but we got AJ Green, Tavarres king, Kris Durham, woooooten, troupe, plus we got all star orson Charles. Murray mentioned that White and Charles can create real problems for a D when im the game at the same time. Say UGA comes out in a power run formation with two TEs in tight and two WRs split wide. The opposing D is reading run all the way so they have eight in the box. Then Charles and White split our wide. All of a sudden the power run formation is a four WR set. If you are the MLB and calling defensive plays, what do you do? I can see mis-matches all over the field with this formation, plus even a rookie QB will know immediately if you are playing man or disguising a zone.

The coaches will make the right decision. Missouri has brought us Aaron White, who hasn’t been all bad since he has come to UGA. Its not a fact, but we all believed that unless Logan Gray was having a spectacular spring then he wasn’t going to start over the two talented freshman. He may continue to catch punts (because obviously the coaches believe he has one of the best hands on the team), and handle kickoff coverage which is fine with me, seeing that the future seems brighter with either of the two freshman. I would like to see him at receiver, however everyone that receives a scholarship doesnt make an impact. But the staff is gonna do everything to make sure he or any other player is used to the best of there ability. Hunker Down!

Michael Foster, even in camp last year the running backs were struggling. Caleb King has struggled now since 2007 with his proliferation of inconsistencies. He’s been a no show in all our losses.
Total No Show.
His I can’t practice. I can’t play today has been a large part of it.
Blitz and you get burned, that is what this day proves. Blitzing and technique in tackling is fine, but if you both bite on a short fake by Zach Mettenberger and let him throw the football to a wide open receiver 50 yards down the field, that clearly is a serious issue.
Caleb King is not having any break-out year until he gets his head into the game. NFL scouts would say that he either doesn’t have the toughness to play in the League or that his head is not into wanting the ball. We’ve known for a long time 2007 that Caleb King could run, but if you remove the one long run, he was average and has been below the average of Washaun Ealey who was our Leading Rusher, not Caleb King because he can’t or won’t play. He also misses practices. You sit there and read into this stat of his 1 long run and say he is better than Washaun Ealey and set finally for his break-out season. I will have to see a whole lot more than that to believe he is going to be our guy.
Washaun Ealey, on the other hand was very solid, as he has been since we ripped the redshirt off him in the 3rd quarter of the 5th game. By then, we had realized that we COULD NOT RELY on Caleb King. Duh, is all I can say.
I don’t care where Logan plays. I do believe the defensive coaching staff could use him in the secondary and I believe they are far better equipped to teach him that position than the offensive coaching staff is at teaching him some position on offense, as they have already proved.
It is not so much of a wasted scholarship on Logan Gray as it is an indictment of the offensive coaching staff, who can ONLY make excuses for him and defend him in blogs about his special teams’ lack of play.
We are complaining about the offense, ANYWAY.
Not given all the running backs’ numbers, but what they did give us shows that the QBs threw the football 3 times as many times as they handed the football to the 2-headed tailback position guys.
Threw the football to Orson Charles only once. Idiots.
Threw 2 more interceptions.
$750,000 for the Defensive Coordinator and MORE than that for his Defensive Staff.
Nice.
Now, what is the deal that our offensive coaching staff is so far undermanned compared to those salaries.
Professors ? Go coach football. Duh.
The University of Georgia annual budget is in excess of 2 billion dollars. Where the hell has Michael F. Adam$ WASTED IT to need the football program to give him millions of dollars a year now. And, why is it that I and no one else either will donate to the University but will to the football program Michael F. Adam$ ? Duh, we hate the guy. So take your weak crap out of here that you are not paid $750,000 as a grad assistant teaching accounting.
Real UGA fans might look at this team who is 1-3 vs the vols the last 4 years and 1-3 vs Florida the last 4 years and say we cannot get out of our own Division of our Own Conference. We might actually not be satisfied going 10-10 vs SEC East competition the last 4 years.
And, yeah, you can break it down to what have you done for us lately when you are TALKING ABOUT A 4-YEAR PERIOD, not the last 2 games.
4 yr average # 96 NCAA Rank in most penalties.
4 yr average 21 fumbles per year
4 yr average 14 interceptions per year
4 yr average 10 wins 10 losses vs SEC East teams
Maybe you want to make excuses for all that. I for one note that in the last 4 years we have LOST 14 GAMES 10 vs SEC East teams alone and that Jim Donnan was fired for losing 13 games his last 4 years here.

BuLLdawg you really need to put the crack pipe down. Take a deep breath, a slow deep breath. Better yet, find another team to follow. The time you devote to bitching and moaning about our coaches, players and administration could be so much better spent doing something else. Something other than UGA football. How do you come up with this crap? Don’t you have a family? A hobby? A sense of reality? You must be a joy to be around. Do all of us a favor. Find something to obsess about. Please.

Oh, wow Caleb had a great practice. Too bad that has NOT translated to the games, however.
1st it is just a practice.
Next admit he had a good practice.
Make up your minds.
LB Sam Maxwell – Kentucky
Aggressive senior defender had a dominant performance vs Georgia that was instrumental in their victory. He is a savvy defender with a quick first step and the power to gain a fast advantage to defeat blocking angles. Maxwell led Kentucky with a career-high 11 tackles, including one TFL in the Wildcats’ 34-27 win. In the final three minutes of the game, Maxwell made two game-saving plays. With Georgia driving for the potential tying touchdown, he stopped Georgia tailback Caleb King at the 1 yard line. On the next play, Kentucky recovered a Bulldog fumble. With 1:45 remaining, he intercepted a pass, clinching the win for the Wildcats. He showed the talent to make plays both inside and at the sidelines. His fine instincts and his ability to run well and drop in coverage at 6’3” 245 lbs. could allow him to be an every down defender and capable of playing in either pro scheme.

Everyone knows the fleet footed Met is going to get sacked, it’s just when and how many, and if he isn’t sacked then he’ll have to force the ball (int), or do the smart thing and throw it away (here’s where he needs smart coaching)…he just can’t keep a play alive, so get ready to take what the D gives you…Gray, here’s yet another spring where he gives up looking down-field and takes off running…this isn’t HS, and no Logan, you’re not going to out run everyone and getting caught behind the line of scrimmage is a sack, and also remember if you’re outside the tackles then throw the ball away (need more coaching)…wonder what led to Murray’s sack, wait he wasn’t sacked…wonder how he was intercepted, tipped ball?, throwing into coverage?, blown route?, bone headed mistake ( may need coaching, or Mr Tucker needs one of those unidentified sources)
Don’t get too hung up on these scrimmages, as you’re playing against the same guys you see everyday, but be aware if these players can’t produce against these same guys, well then worry…nice write up Mr. Tucker, good info

Face it, if he had the potential to start, Gray would have replaced Cox last year. It’s time to give up on QB and move to WR. The kid can play and would be valuable in the WR corps.

Logan for safety, 4.4 speed, former QB, 6′3″, sure handed, a white guy. And he is not like… our burned safety # 13 of 09. I think these are good stats for safety. Again, what do I know?
