ATHENS -– Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger put up good numbers but Logan Gray not-so-good. Caleb King and Washaun Ealey picked up where they left off last fall. Rantavious Wooten had a big day.
And the new 3-4 defense apparently made its presence felt at times, too, as Georgia’s football team held its first scrimmage of spring practice Saturday morning in Sanford Stadium.
“I’m pretty sore right now,” wide receiver Wooten said afterward. “The defense was bringing it.”
The 90-minute intra-squad scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but these were among the storylines, based on statistics provided by coach Mark Richt and post-scrimmage interviews:
Richt said all three quarterbacks “made mostly good decisions” in the scrimmage, but offered no sweeping assessment about their competition.
“If you’re trying to get at where we’re going, I mean, I don’t know where we’re going yet,” Richt said. “But they’re all competing and doing a good job.”
He said Gray’s numbers were partly attributable to “just circumstance, what plays you might have when you get in there, what opportunities present themselves.”
“Actually, Rantavious was struggling a little bit [in spring practice] until today,” Richt said. “Today was good medicine for him. He [had been dropping] more balls than we’re used to seeing, but today he caught everything. I’m sure that’ll get him over the hump.”
Said Wooten: “Certainly, spring hadn’t started off too good for me. I have to kind of get back in the groove, and I took today to show them . . . I can make plays.”
His 65-yard touchdown, he said, came after Mettenberger faked a short throw and the cornerback and safety “bit on it.”
“I feel like as a whole the defense did a decent job,” linebacker Akeem Dent said. “I wouldn’t say it was good or great. We did good enough to get through the scrimmage, but we feel that we have a long way to go.”
After the scrimmage, Grantham “just told us that it was decent, that we did OK,” Dent said. “He asked us if we wanted to be great. I feel everybody on the defense wants to be great. We want to be aggressive; we want to attack. To be that way, we’re going to have to continue to work.”
Richt’s assessment of the defense’s play: “I think we all understand that we’re still learning. I think the things coaches are looking for are, ‘Are the players trying to do it the way we ask? Are they playing with intensity? Are they hitting hard? Are they getting better daily?’ And that part of it, I think, we’re all pleased with.”
Richt also was pleased that “when the defense had a chance to get their hands on the ball, they made the play.” Safeties Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams intercepted passes.
Etc.
Richt said offensive lineman A.J. Harmon injured his leg, but the severity was not known. . . . Richt said there were “very few penalties.” . . . Green had just one catch (the 40-yard TD) but didn’t play many snaps. . . . Georgia’s next session of spring practice is Tuesday. Another scrimmage is scheduled for next Saturday and the G-Day intra-squad game for April 10.

The writing is probably already on the wall but Gray can’t afford another sub par performance. Also there are two things I want to see together more often. AJ Green and TD pass. Can’t wait for the spring game.

I know this is easy for me to say, but if Logan Gray can’t figure it out by the G-Day game that’s probably best for him to move his position. Let’s not forget Hutson Mason is on his way as well, and he’s an incoming freshmen but that’s just more competition and could go either way. Combine that with that fact that we are really short on receivers, I say the sooner the better if he makes that move. He can get some reps at wideout, and help the team out more in the long run. And I’m sure he’d have alot more fun contibuting . But like I said, that’s easy for me to say. I’m not the one with the qb scholly from Georgia. Go Dawgs!!

Randy Marsh:
This is the very beginning of Spring practice, these weeks are probably used more to “finetune” what’s been put in so far. It’s more important for the players to work on execution right now than competition, plus having the plays work will give the players some confidence. It’s been my experience, what little I got in high school, that you work up to 1’s vs 1’s. The Georgia coaches aren’t hiding anything, my guess is that’ll proabally happen more in the G-Day game.

I think Richt is playing it pretty close to the chest. Are all schools as forthcoming with info about depth, strategies, etc.? I’ve always wondered.
Glad to see the secondary holding on to the picks. that was tough to watch last year. But nobody seems to mention the amount of pick-6s that went against the Dawgs. Is it just me, or did we give a lot of opposing defenses TD stats? There was one in this morn’s scrimmage. Maybe, they should coach up the “O” on defending against INTs or perhaps do away with those passes to the flats with no one behind except green pastures. thoughts?

This scrimmage confirmed what I already thought…….move Gray to WR now!!!! Start Murray with Mett as the back up and Mason as 3rd string. I think UGA can get by that first game without Mett and just let Murray play the whole game and get the experience so Mason can reshirt barring injury to Murray. But for the last time I am tired of hearing about the lack of depth at WR. 4 TE’s right???????? Run the darn football!!!! Alabama won the National Title last year by throwing every game to Julio Jones and designing game plans around how to get him the ball right???? How many yards did he get last year? Did he win any awards? ……but he has a National Title Ring.

Wait did Sturdivent have somebody dress him and carry him to the field? If not I am sure UnsturdyVent hurt something again. Russ was the happiest of all the Dawgs. No fans or media were around so he didn’t have his butt painted. I am sure the D will take some time because of all the changes but I can’t wait until October. That is when UGA stops playing High School Teams and plays real football right? Wait when are the Gators, LSU, or Bama on the schedule? The only proven SEC teams that have as good as or better talent that UGA and ALWAYS beat UGA. Should be another easy 8 win regular season. Wait did UGA win 8 regular season games last year? Don’t matter they will still win the SEC and Play for the National Championship I am sure.

Everyone who is criticizing in some way get a grip. This is a practice scrimmage. Gray was given a different set of circumstances and many times your success is dependent on the blocking and receivers. Don’t make so much of stats from these games. It’s unfair to each player. You don’t have a clue thus far . If you use stats only, then Zach is your QB. The 1-game suspension won’t affect who our #1 QB will be. Yeah, he will ride the pines one game, but if you think the coachs won’t pick the best QB then you have another think coming.
It sounds like we got great player attitude and playmakers abound. Great news! The G-Day Game sounds like it may buildup to a spirited contest. Sounds like we have game everywhere except maybe secondary. That can change by the next scrimmage. No one needs to be making negative comments at this time except of course the feeble crowd from GT. They are on here in disguise trying to guide some of you negative nellies into grinding our team . Don’t fall for it and keep looking positive at these guys. Heck, we don’t have all the players on campus yet! Don’t you think one or two freshmen can make an impact. It’s a great day for UGA ball. Hope Harmon’s leg injury isn’t severe. We need him.

I expected a better defense than this for this season, but the in-coming freshmen class on Defense features several I expect to get after it. Hopefully, they are there on the sidelines.
Logan Gray threw another interception. In his 4 years in this program now, he has 0 TD passes but 2 interceptions and has completed only 5 passes. Move along Logan, you are wasting our time.
Aaron Murray threw an interception. Excuse me, the issue is still on the Offensive Coaching Staff. SEC Defenses have a lot more than what our Offense went up against today. Aaron Murray threw 15 passes, and he was just 1 of 3 QB sharing time equally. Yet , once again, please note that our 2-headed Tailback Rotation had only 15 carries combined. Closed practice. Partial stats, and a Coach commenting about the partial stats defending Logan Gray’s performance when he clearly was the worst of the 3. Plus don’t forget, we have seen Logan Gray play QB. Quit with the excuses for the kid. Who were the other running backs and what did they get on the ground besides Chapas making 2 catches. And, why hide the fact that Orson Charles only had 1 ball thrown to him all day ?
We are a clueless offense. We remain a clueless offense. And, now the defense, which I figured would be our best in 30 years this season, is clearly a concern until my freshmen class on Defense gets here. We get into a big game, and all we do is throw the football.
oledawg, if Aaron Murray has to play the whole 1st game by himself, why is it that you cannot figure out that that was the game that Zach Mettenberger would have played in for us all to see. And, oledawg says that Coach Richt would not hesitate to put Zach Mettenberger on the field as the Starter in Game 2 on the road, against a good SEC Defense, at night, and against Steve Spurrier.
Arrest / Suspension thing is a big deal. Isn’t it ?

Michael Foster, even in camp last year the running backs were struggling. Caleb King has struggled now since 2007 with his proliferation of inconsistencies. He’s been a no show in all our losses.
Total No Show.
His I can’t practice. I can’t play today has been a large part of it.
Blitz and you get burned, that is what this day proves. Blitzing and technique in tackling is fine, but if you both bite on a short fake by Zach Mettenberger and let him throw the football to a wide open receiver 50 yards down the field, that clearly is a serious issue.
Caleb King is not having any break-out year until he gets his head into the game. NFL scouts would say that he either doesn’t have the toughness to play in the League or that his head is not into wanting the ball. We’ve known for a long time 2007 that Caleb King could run, but if you remove the one long run, he was average and has been below the average of Washaun Ealey who was our Leading Rusher, not Caleb King because he can’t or won’t play. He also misses practices. You sit there and read into this stat of his 1 long run and say he is better than Washaun Ealey and set finally for his break-out season. I will have to see a whole lot more than that to believe he is going to be our guy.
Washaun Ealey, on the other hand was very solid, as he has been since we ripped the redshirt off him in the 3rd quarter of the 5th game. By then, we had realized that we COULD NOT RELY on Caleb King. Duh, is all I can say.
I don’t care where Logan plays. I do believe the defensive coaching staff could use him in the secondary and I believe they are far better equipped to teach him that position than the offensive coaching staff is at teaching him some position on offense, as they have already proved.
It is not so much of a wasted scholarship on Logan Gray as it is an indictment of the offensive coaching staff, who can ONLY make excuses for him and defend him in blogs about his special teams’ lack of play.
We are complaining about the offense, ANYWAY.
Not given all the running backs’ numbers, but what they did give us shows that the QBs threw the football 3 times as many times as they handed the football to the 2-headed tailback position guys.
Threw the football to Orson Charles only once. Idiots.
Threw 2 more interceptions.
$750,000 for the Defensive Coordinator and MORE than that for his Defensive Staff.
Nice.
Now, what is the deal that our offensive coaching staff is so far undermanned compared to those salaries.
Professors ? Go coach football. Duh.
The University of Georgia annual budget is in excess of 2 billion dollars. Where the hell has Michael F. Adam$ WASTED IT to need the football program to give him millions of dollars a year now. And, why is it that I and no one else either will not donate to the University but will to the football program Michael F. Adam$ ? Duh, we hate the guy. So take your weak crap out of here that you are not paid $750,000 as a grad assistant teaching accounting.
Real UGA fans might look at this team who is 1-3 vs the vols the last 4 years and 1-3 vs Florida the last 4 years and say we cannot get out of our own Division of our Own Conference. We might actually not be satisfied going 10-10 vs SEC East competition the last 4 years.
And, yeah, you can break it down to what have you done for us lately when you are TALKING ABOUT A 4-YEAR PERIOD, not the last 2 games.
4 yr average # 96 NCAA Rank in most penalties.
4 yr average 21 fumbles per year
4 yr average 14 interceptions per year
4 yr average 10 wins 10 losses vs SEC East teams
Maybe you want to make excuses for all that. I for one note that in the last 4 years we have LOST 14 GAMES 10 vs SEC East teams alone and that Jim Donnan was fired for losing 13 games his last 4 years here.

BuLLdawg you are wrong about Caleb King. He finished the LSU game with a broken jaw. He came back after just a week away and played the season on a liquid diet. There is no “can’t” or “won’t” with him — you know Ealey would have had a chance to play earlier but HE had an injury that prevented him from getting in the mix earlier. Was his injury just bad luck and Caleb’s is bad character? You make no sense.

On the same vein, I don’t understand the handful of posters here who will call Caleb out. He had a good 2009 season. He had injuries (but AJ missed more play time with his injuries… are you going to call AJ out, too??) and he’s worked hard. He’s worked hard to make sure he and Washaun work as a TEAM. Where is the inconsistency you’re talking about? NO ONE did well against LSU.
How many practices has Caleb missed? We all read about the one this week because he was throwing up. He wasn’t the only kid on the team who was sick and throwing up and out of practice, his missing practice was the only one in the news.
When BOTH kids, Caleb and Washaun, have an incredible season, I’d love to see what you find to talk trash about. I’m sure you’ll find something because it seems you hate just to hate.

This is my favorite part of what BuLLdawg writes:
“NFL scouts would say that he either doesn’t have the toughness to play in the League or that his head is not into wanting the ball..”
This makes me LAUGH. Like you know what NFL scouts would say. You are delusional. I wish I had noticed the hilarity of that statement before I wrote any of my reply, because discussing college football with you is a waste of time.
The other funny part is how you are dissecting the scrimmage, passes vs. running like the coaches should have just run the ball to win. They’re not trying to win, numbnuts, they’re trying to learn as much as they can about the players. Washaun and Caleb don’t need to be tested in a scrimmage, they’ve shown they can run.
You are so funny it’s stupid.

Or, is it possibly RED DOG 77 that ONLY YOU can say that Mike Bobo cannot call the plays well, cannot determine who it is who should be Starter and who should be the back-up at any offensive position, cannot prepare the quarterbacks, cannot handle the job of Offensive Coordinator, cannot recruit 1 single solitary offensive player even now for this 2010 recruiting class none from this great state of Georgia on offense wants to play for him EITHER as you say yourself MIKE BOBO CANNOT HANDLE THE JOB OF OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.
You little girl hiding behind your keyboard can say ALL THIS but I cannot say the same exact thing because God Knows this is ONLY YOUR BLOG although I have posted here Access Atlanta for 25 years. Little girls like you hiding behind your keyboard telling fans what a real fan is feel that it is ok for oledawg to say that if Coach Richt wants Zach Mettenberger as his Starter, that he will start him on the road against Steve Spurrier at South Carolina in Game 2 having been prevented from playing him at all in the warm-up game because of the number 89 arrest / suspension in the Coach Richt Era.
Only you can say how great UGA is at 10-10 vs SEC East last 20 games.
4 years of 21 fumbles a year, 4 years of 14 interceptions a year, 4 years of # 96 in the nation in penalties a year, and 4 years of 14 losses 10 to The SEC East alone. A division which has NOT been good except for Florida. Our offense is the problem and now today our defense is not up for play yet – but hopefully that will get up for play because I said that this season would be our best defense in 30 years and feature the 2 best kickers on any team in America. 10-3 or 9-4. But, I don’t like it that we had our 3 QB throw 3 times as many passes as we handed the ball off to our 2-headed running back position guys Washaun and Caleb because that too is what Mike Bobo has done in the big game except for the 1 game against Georgia tek last year. 1 game. Taught him nothing obviously. Bright ? Smart ? Whatever you said. B.S. He is a BAD OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, according to YOU.
20 games vs SEC East and we don’t even have a winning record. I point out that only Florida has been any good the last 4 years in the SEC East.
I am NOT satisfied and YOU ARE. You can sit there and whine like a little girl all you want hiding behind your keyboard but the FACTS are that YOU say the exact same thing I do about our Offense
MIKE BOBO is NOT cutting it as Offensive Coordinator.

RB Caleb King remains “a solid No. 2″ according to Georgia coach Mark Richt, though Richt said he has put starting RB Richard Samuel on notice after Samuel fumbled twice last Saturday against Arkansas. “(King) could be a co-No. 1,” Richt said.

Caleb King rushed 7 times for 22 yards last year’s G-Day Game.
2007 nothing but hype by you guys about Caleb King. More today.
6 rushes for 12 yards against LSU.
11 carries for 39 yards against Vandie.
9 rushes for 18 yards against the vols in the loss.
10 carries for 39 yards against hapless Arizona State.
7 rushes for 28 yards against Central Michigan whatever that is.
32 yards rushing G-Day game the year before last.
1 rush against Georgia tek in the LOSS for 1 measly yard
Georgia tek would NOT have been Top 25 except for OUR LOSS
1 rush for 1 yard against Florida in the 49-10 LOSS.
What is your excuse for these too ?
1 rush for 5 yards in the loss to Alabama LOSING 31 to NOTHING
At HALT TIME
3 rushes for 9 yards against South Carolina.
The guy is INCONSISTENT. Get over it.
Averages over a yard per carry LESS than Washaun Ealey.
NOT STARTING Tailback but Richard Samuel ahead of him for God’s sake
Oh, he is the only 1 reported as MISSING PRACTICE again this week ?
What about his hamstring all last Fall ?
Waiting for me to point that out too ?
Did NOT play vs Okie State whom Houston beat, but not us.
Okie State was NOT ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25.
But, no Caleb King.
Did NOT play vs South Carolina.
LSU again last year ate him up 8 rushes for 9 yards.
LSU beat NO TOP 25 TEAM, but beat US.
vols broken jaw and concussion in LSU game
LSU game before broken jaw concussion 8 carries 9 yards LOSS
Florida 5 carries for 19 yards.
Note please he was the Starting Tailback.
18 for 77 yards Kentucky in LOSS
Kentucky ALSO was NOT RANKED Top 25 at 7-6
But, they beat US with Caleb King
Even though Washaun Ealey was redshirted until we figured out we could not rely on Caleb King, redshirted until the 3rd quarter of the 5th game, Washaun Ealey was OUR LEADING RUSHER last year. What does that tell you ? It tells you according to OUR OFFENSIVE BRAIN TRUST that Caleb King was our STARTER. Washaun started only 2 games, and those not even the last 2.

dawgfan,
Oh yes, the Questions for AJ Green WILL BE ABOUT injuries too.
A slew of them already.
The NFL will 100 percent question him about that more than every other question he fields combined.
We could blame all this on the offensive coaching staff.
Every question we debate.
Florida for example, you probably did not notice that 5 guys covered AJ Green when he got injured.
5 guys
We ran the play to him anyway and that is what happened.
Injury bug is an issue with the NFL. They have 53 guys on a roster. That limits having AJ Green at Detroit for example as you discuss in this blog, because Detroit cannot have AJ Green and also have their Georgia tek 1st round draft pick. You cannot do that in the NFL.
In the NFL, you have 53 on the roster, that’s it.
You HAVE to PLAY.

Perhaps some of us have missed it so it would be helpful if you would please remind everyone where you played college football. And talk about how you performed on the practice field. And in games on Saturdays. And then remind folks where you made your bones in coaching, college or NFL, or both?
It would sure be helpful to folks struggling to understand where you got your sweat equity in football acumen.

Having an opinion on the team you love is one thing but to constantly try and cram down stuff that most just scroll past now, as I do on every one of your posts, is insane. Who knows you may actually have something to add but who can tell through all that? You must be a night worker as well as you started all this around midnight and finally ran off the rest of the posters by 6 this morning. I love reading about sports and listening to those with intelligent comments but the filibusters you usually present gives you no credibility. Please just step back and take an honest look at what you are posting and try and see from where most of your detractors are coming from. It may help with the ulcer you are surly making.

2007 Caleb King was our UGA Bulldogs’ Top-Ranked Recruit. After transferring from Norcross to Greater Atlanta Christian, he got injured. A 5-Star Recruit and Ranked the Number 4 Best Running Back in All of America, Caleb King was redshirted. 2008 and 2009 have produced no where near the pre-injury high school senior year hype. Clearly, Caleb King has been a huge big disappointment. Jonathan Dwyer for example out of Marietta was not considered anywhere in the same class as Caleb King. Now Dwyer goes on to the NFL and we have posters to this blog bragging how Caleb King is finally going to have his Break-Out Year for UGA instead of half of his career here being games of 1 rush for 1 yard. Or, 8 rushes for 9 yards.
4.56 in the 40-yard dash, he has not shown the speed he had as a Junior in High School.
There was no one in the Recruiting Class of 2007 for us that was rated anywhere near as high as Caleb King.
Ryan Mallett, Chad Jones, Eric Berry, Jimmy Clausen these are the guys we were told we got in our Caleb King.
If you read the details at the time, they said QUESTIONS : Durability.
Durability has been THE ISSUE with Caleb King EXACTLY as was said in 2007.
It STILL is what is said today about Caleb King, durability.
Jonathan Dwyer was ranked # 13 running back, slower and bigger more durable than Caleb King ranked # 4 running back in the nation.
He has been anything but the damn hype.
Hyped for his vision, balance and speed, what we have seen is that he does not have patience at the line for the blocks to spring him. It’s been 4 years now since his injury his senior year. When is that going to be behind him ? When will he be consistent ?
When will he do something besides like last year not even playing all Fall with a Hamstring. Then, he comes back to the team in game 3 and game 4 is out again after 8 rushes for 9 yards.
Mike Bobo’s Foundation for his Offense this year is Caleb King his Starting Tailback and Washaun Ealey who is far better buried on the Depth Chart behind this tailback who is supposed to be so great, but in fact has suffered from serious issues with durability.
Caleb King, the Foundation for Mike Bobo’s Offense this coming season ?
I don’t buy into that.
What are YOU going to say when Caleb King AGAIN has some FURTHER EXCUSE for not being able to practice ? For not being able to play ? For playing and having 8 rushed for 9 yards ? For playing and having 1 rush for 1 yard ?
Well ?
DISNEYdawgs.com running in here asking me what I am going to say when he does play all 14 games at 100 yards a game as I know he can ? I am going to say that he is in his contact year. Expected to be the 4th running back in the nation in the NFL Draft, he is sitting here trying to finally have a Break-Out Season. The others all deemed worse than Caleb King coming here, are all going to the NFL Draft while he sits out practice unable to play.
I threw up coach.
What the F is that ?
I threw up at practice.
I went back on the field wiping it from my face, and make the catch. The football coach came over to me and asked me if I didn’t want to play on Defense too ? I said I wouldn’t mind having a chance to hit the QB.
He throws up and sits on the bench.
And, I am here to tell you about it.
Quit with the hype about Caleb King. He’d done NONE of the hype.
So, what if he does ?
Where the F has he been all 2007, 2008, 2009 and now 2010 ?
“I think we can do it,” Caleb King said after practice.
B.S.
I know I can get out there and kick your butt today, blog poster from his cell phone.
Washaun Ealey sat out until the 3rd quarter of the 5th game because the coaches said they were going to REDSHIRT HIM.
BS I think we can do it.
Notice the difference : Washaun Ealey says : “I know the Offense better.” “I feel more comfortable in the Offense.”
4 years here now for Caleb King now this season and Washaun Ealey came in and had to take over for in the inconsistent Caleb King as a true freshman last year.
Washaun Ealey the LEADING RUSHER for UGA Bulldogs.
Not Caleb King.
His mind is not right. “I think we can do it.” The problem with you is that you are so clouded in your reading that you miss it all together having NEVER PLAYED THE DAMN GAME. That is not a football statement. I think we can do it.
A football statement is I know the offense better. I feel more comfortable in the offense, not I think we can do it.
4 years now of LACK OF DURABILITY.
Starting with his senior year in high school.
We recruited him with a visit to my alma mater’s campus on January 17, 20007 after his injury. In fact Coach Richt said that it did not affect him recruiting him as injured once he signed with us Signing Day the next month.
But, you don’t remember any of that either.
You cannot even remember what you said yourself.
“This is pretty much the first spring I could feel comfortable and just let everything loose.” Caleb King said this week. He has been HOLDING BACK.
Duh.
“I think it’s a very big deal running the ball,” Ealey said. “Every great team runs the ball. We’re a major key to this team’s success.” You will NOT see Caleb King saying that. He NEVER has. And Washaun Ealey is a true Freshman saying that while Caleb King on the same day, admits he has been HOLDING BACK the entire time on campus here since 2007.
It’s 2010 now, 4 years later and this is the first time Caleb King pretty much could feel comfortable and just let everything loose.
“We’ve just been talking about gaining yards,” Ealey said. The difference in you and me is that I look at what the player has done and give credit to Washaun Ealey for it. You look at the hype about Caleb King and ask me what if after 4 years now here he does play every game, does rush for 100 yards a game, and I say I haven’t seen it YET.

Good to see Caleb King continuing to dominate. Caleb’s conditioning is amazing. He’s getting it done.
The last 5 games of 2009, UGA is averaging 247 yards per game. Good for 5th best in the NCAA out of 118 teams.

LB Sam Maxwell – Kentucky
Aggressive senior defender had a dominant performance vs Georgia that was instrumental in their victory. He is a savvy defender with a quick first step and the power to gain a fast advantage to defeat blocking angles. Maxwell led Kentucky with a career-high 11 tackles, including one TFL in the Wildcats’ 34-27 win. In the final three minutes of the game, Maxwell made two game-saving plays. With Georgia driving for the potential tying touchdown, he stopped Georgia tailback Caleb King at the 1 yard line. On the next play, Kentucky recovered a Bulldog fumble. With 1:45 remaining, he intercepted a pass, clinching the win for the Wildcats. He showed the talent to make plays both inside and at the sidelines. His fine instincts and his ability to run well and drop in coverage at 6’3” 245 lbs. could allow him to be an every down defender and capable of playing in either pro scheme.

UGA #1 ranked rushing attack in the SEC over the last 5 games of 2009, averaging 247 rushing yards per game. Ranked #5 in the Nation. That’s the kind of offensive production it takes to win the SEC. Good to see that train continuing to roll down the track.
Brantley 45% completion in Florida scrimmage

I guess you guys heard about Brantley’s “performance” in the Florida scrimmage yesterday.
Brantley put up numbers similar to Logan Gray. Completed less than 50% of his passes.
Like I’ve been saying Florida is in trouble with Brantley.

Yeah, but Logan didn’t throw any picks, did he? Let’s not beat Logan up too much. After all, he’s probably going to have to at least be the back up for the first game.
It is all about protecting the ball. And the protection or play selection might not have been there for him. Could be just circumstantial. It is one practice guys. There were probably scrimmages where Cox outperformed Stafford but we all know who was the better QB.
Just let them keep competing and see what happens.
And BuLLdawg, I can tell you are passionate and are knowledgeable about UGA football. But your posts are just too long and nobody is reading them. Shorten them up a little bit so we can enjoy your points as well. As an fyi, I’m critical on Richt as well at times. I don’t think he’s the best thing since sliced bread either. If he was that great, he would have won us a BCS championship by now b/c god knows he’s always had the talent.

Thin at WR? anyone know why and how this happens…did someone graduate, or go pro unexpectedly that would warrant this, or are there enough receivers, but they just aren’t ready to play? If you couldn’t get the players you wanted/needed, then I hope they looked at the JC’s.
The almighty playbook that must have come down from the mt. w/ Moses…forget about talent and abilities, you square pegs will run these round plays, and if you can’t, then we’ll just dummy down the game plan, and make everything predictable…the playbook can be thick as all get out, but if it doesn’t match the talent out on the field, wellll…so you’re thin at WR’s, but you’re heavy at TE’s and on top of that, two of them can be split out and run pass routes and catch the ball, while adding a whole new wrinkle and problem for the defense…can the playbook, adapt to the players you have…
Two QB’s are mobile, and one has way less mobility, so who has the edge right now…well, it’s the oil & water QB’s…exact opposites…Met can’t move and is a straight drop back pocket QB, while Murray and Gray are both similar in abilities and are more mobile…if you start Murray and he goes down and you bring in Met, well the playbook just shrunk, however if Gray comes in then there shouldn’t be a drop off in play calling…now if Met is the starter and he goes down, then Murray or Gray comes in and are able to run more of the playbook, which sounds better?
Presently on the team are 4 FLKK’s, 3 SE’s, 4 WR’s, an 6 TE’s (2 of which can operate as wide outs)…Hokey Smoke! can anybody tell me where there is a shortage…13 players that should be able to help out …these guys aren’t just run of the mill players are they? aren’t they part of the TOP 5 recruiting classes in the nation, year after year…the coaches sound like Lou Holtz and JoePa, always down playing everything, delivering the impending gloom msg, overstating the opposing team/issue and understating their team/abilities…it gets old
Forget about the excuses, who’s fault is that this team is placed in this position year after year, or is it just smoke & mirrors designed to provide talking points later on, or provide excuses/explanation(s) if something goes wrong down the road…UGA football is a BIG BUSINESS, and as in any business there should be a “Contingency Plan”, not excuses…let the fan’s provide the excuses on the blogs and around the water cooler…get out in the real world and try providing these lame excuses year after year, and you better make sure your resume is updated…CMR’s job is to fix the problems, provide leadership, and man up and accept the fact that maybe it was you who didn’t have his team prepared, not that we are thin at WR’s…
Think about how excited you fan’s are with this new defensive coaching staff…very take charge and states it like it is, evaluates talent, and not afraid to make moves (ie…Samuels you’re moving from OLB to ILB; just like that)…not afraid to say it as it is either (wasn’t it something about lack of tackling abilities for the past 5 years)…while on the “O” side of the ball can’t even pick a QB after seeing everyone for over a year, whines about WR’s, RB by committee, coming back from injuries on the “O” line, etc., etc. etc,
No I’m not a coach, and I’m not a fan, but I like UGA now that you have some Fl boy’s up there…just stating some things that I’ve noticed about CMR’s style of coaching over the 10 year win average success while flaming out in big games year in and year out…have at it
isn’t this the time of the year when a coach at a major D1 school provides enthusiasm to fan’s going forward, and not setting up the doom and gloom and woe is me attitude that I’ve read at UGA the past two years..

Man this blog is comical….If you know anything about college ball you know that team chemistry/motivation etc go a long way and that has been lacking in the recent past. Don’t know how it will be this yr but I can tell you that having a hard ass NFL coach in the trenches will pay dividends as much a his scheme. For those of you bitching about the defense etc, remember that these guys were recruited to a diff scheme and may have been a miss under that schem as well. time will fix “the stats”
And if know anything about a scrimage, them you know they are designed to look at player groups and certain plays..Stats are impt but not aas much as you would think. Execution and competiton is. Stats get more impt as the number of proctices and scrimages increase.
As for BullDog…Man give up on the stats over the last 4 years..It’s history…You muct have way too much time on your hands to keep looking up how many times a kid missed a practice. How many times did you miss work last yr? looking this crap up…

Like I’ve been saying, it could be worse than UGA, we could have Brantley, the most untested QB in the SEC.
Wow, 42% completion rate, and an intereception and no passes for more than 25 yards.
Doesn’t really compare to Mett or Murray’s 67-70% completion rate, or longest pass of 40-65 yards.
Florida is in DEEP trouble on offense, AND they can’t run the ball without someone fumbling.
Our QB situation looks MUCH better than Florida.
41% completion for Brantley, and he’s the best QB they have? Wow!!!

Prepare yourselves mentally Dawg fans for the same old, same old. Logan (Joe T) Gray is gonna be either: a) the starting QB, or b) will come in at QB randomly in every game, no matter his ineffectiveness, because he’s been here longer than M & M.
We’ve seen this not once, but twice in the Richt era (Joe T, Joe Cox). It matters not who is the best, but who touches Richt’s heart strings more.

Guys don’t let the numbers on D fool you. There were a lot of third string guys that played several minutes. For those of you that don’t know, that’s how a scrimmage works, everyone plays. The pass D looked good, D-backs were breaking on the ball much better than last year, the o-line opened up some good holes for the backs. Murry looked good but Mettenberger’s stock certainly went up. Don’t count him out. Unfortunately Marlon Brown didn’t participate but he certainly looked good in his silver and green jersey.

Arkansas coulod lightup your D deoending on how well they have learned the 3-4 but it will be a home game and again UGA should win. Miss State? Hell Tech has beat then the last 2 years, nad colorado is not the Colorado of Old and maybe the Thin Air will help them but I don’t think the Dawgs will lose that game either. Hut..Hut..Hut…doesn’t that tell you a little something about the Gator defense. Jeremy Brown is “all that” at cornerback replacing Haden. He is healthy an looking very good. He is a future All-SEC CB to go along with the other current All-SEC CB in J. Jenkins. Mo Jenkins is looking very good at CB too. And the 2 fresh CBs…Shaw and Watkins…are also playing well. This defense may be better than last years D….definitely more athletic and faster with Joe Bostic is the middle and William Green at DE (wait to you get a glimpse of this guy…Alabama people know about William Green!!!) and Will Hill at FS. No first team OL or WR played in yesterday’s scrimmage. The entire OL were freshman and redshirt freshman protecting (or not protecting Brantley)and the experienced and extemely talented Gator D ate them for lunch. Brantley will not be playing behind a freshman OL or with inexperienced WRs in the fall. Brantley has looked great playing behind the #1 OL. I think the OB from Tampa is going to be very good for Georgia and will give Georgia a very athletic QB. He does get hurt a lot, however. Can he stand up to SEC talent and pressure as a freshman? Big question to be answered in the fall for Georgia fans. But if you think the Gators are down this year….I am very, very SORRY to say you are badly mistaken. Tons of talent and experience in Gainesville still…and will be that way for years to come.

I was glad to see Wooten have a big day. His spring had not gone well up to that scrimage so maybe he will gain some confidence. The guy runs beautiful routes but tends to start running before he puts the ball away. Nick Williams may be earning some serious pt opposite Rambo. I like to see those SOWEGA boys doing well. Nick seems to love the 3-4. You really can’t tell much from a spring scrimage, especially the first one, but it seems to me that the only guys with posistions locked up, other than the starting O line, are AJ, Charles, and Rambo. Green and Charles caught one pass each, everybody knows what they can do, let’s see what else we have. It is good to see the running game going well, hopefully this years o will look better than last years in the spring game. Last years O looked pathetic! I think BuLLdawg is upset he got passed over for offensive coordinator. He clearly was the best candidate. So Darn!!! He’s Right! Whatever shall we do? We’ve got an incompetent offensive coordinator – so forget ever having a quarterback or running back drafted anywhere inside the top 3 rounds. We’ve recruited incompetent idiots. Our line sucks. We should just clone AJ 10 times and line him up everywhere. Whatever shall we do?
And a new defensive scheme? This will be the worst year ever!!! Let’s start a hire BuLLdawg campaign – IF we’re lucky – he’ll get hired in time to sort all this mess out and salvage a 6-6 season. I mean let’s face it – we have NO CHANCE of winning the SEC EAST. We have NO CHANCE of a winning season. We’re CRAP. Just call us the DUKE of the SEC EAST. We’re pathetic – we just look good on signing day.

If everything goes as I suspect the Offense should get the best of the D until mid fall camp. That is how it should be the Offense has players comfortable in their roles…the guys know what to do where to go etc…it should take awhile for the Defense to get familiar with the scheme and comfortable enough to play without thinking about their assignments all the time.I’m not looking for a “shutdown” dominant D this year. I would be happy to just shave 6-7 pts off of our scoring Defensive numbers from last season. Our Offense should be at least top 3 in the SEC even with a first year starter at QB.

Is Demp from Florida doing track this summer? Did they move Chris to slot? And who has any experience running the football for Florida for the RB’s in the current backfield?

David Paschall from the Times Free Press out of Chattanooga had just as good if not better coverage of the scrimmage. People wonder if there is UGA bias? This is embarrassing.

From comparing to SEC QB’s in scrimmages, UGA offense is #1 so far in 2010. Better QB’s, better RB’s, better WR’s, the stats don’t lie.
Where are all those posters who’ve been telling us all how great Brantley was going to be? They seemed to dissapear after the scrimmage.
Brantley went 41% completion, 13 for 31, and threw an interception, in the red zone, that was returned for a touchdown. Longest pass 25 yards. Not good. Horrendous.

The defense will only face 4 good offenses in 2010 (pretty light ESPN high ranking type of schedule for a change), so these are the games the defense needs to play big for UGA:
1) Arkansas
2) Auburn
3) Ga Tech
4) Florida
Game #3 (Arkansas) will be the hardest because the defense will not have been tested and experienced much by that time.
By games #9 (Florida), #11 (Auburn) and #12 (Ga Tech), the defense will be dialed in.
So Grantham needs to start schemeing for Arkansas NOW!

dc…12:13……..3/28………Thanks for your post, my friend ! Somehow, someway, somebody will figure out chemistry has a whole hell of alot to do with winning in college football ! Personally, I think UGA made some very good hires in the off-season. There is something about coach Todd Grantham, Dude is tough as a pine knot, just what we needed to foster a little chemistry ! I think, as I read more about Spring practice, coach Grantham’s fire is noy only pumping up the defense, but you know how chemistry works, it is spreading to the offense like a wildfire………..Things are shaping up for a pretty interesting 2010………GO DOGS !!!! GATA !!!! WOOF……..WOOF………….WOOF………..WOOF !!!

The UGA Offense will only play 3 good defenses in 2010:
South Carolina, Tenn, and Florida
Sout Carolina is game #2, Tenn is game #6, Florida is game #9
If UGA can get past South Carolina, it should be cooking by game #6 against Tenn. And by game #9 on Oct. 30, UGA’s offense will be running like a well-oiled machine, putting up 450 yards of offense, and scoring over 35 points a game.

Fellow Dawg fans, can we all agree that BuLLdawg is a first class idiot and needs to be blackballed from the board. Has he ever said anything positive about the team?
Should we just call him “Chicken Little” as the sky, in his world, must be falling.
Dawgs need some minor tweaks in all phases (minus kicking game) and will be right in the hunt for SEC title (which all SEC fans know means in the hunt for N.C. title as well).
fries with that?
