The unspoken question: Who leads the QB derby?

(UPDATE: Report on Saturday’s scrimmage, including the quarterbacks’ performance, is here.)

ATHENS –- Each day, Georgia’s quarterbacks meet with their position coach, Mike Bobo. One topic never comes up in those meetings: a pecking order among the three quarterbacks competing this spring to be the Bulldogs’ starter.

“Coach Bobo really isn’t telling anybody, ‘You stand here,’ ‘You stand here,’” Logan Gray said.

“No, Coach Bobo hasn’t said anything, him or Coach Richt,” Aaron Murray said.

The three quarterbacks -– Gray, Murray and Zach Mettenberger –- have evenly shared snaps with the first-team offense in the seven sessions of spring practice so far. And they will do so Saturday morning when the team holds a closed scrimmage in Sanford Stadium, undoubtedly the most important day yet in their competition.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Murray said. “Coach Richt was talking after practice [Thursday] that this is going to be the first test for everyone, [the time] to see where everyone is at, what we have learned and where we have come after two weeks of practice.”

The scrimmage will be Georgia’s first of three allowed by the NCAA during spring practice.

“This is my third spring, so obviously I’ve found out scrimmages in the spring are what are judged probably the most and the biggest,” Gray said. “With this being our first one, and with the quarterback competition going on how it is right now, obviously it’s going to be really important.

“But I don’t want to make it the end of the world,” Gray added. “If one of us has a not-so-good day, I don’t think that’s just going to kill us, or put somebody out of what’s going on. But I think everybody is going to be excited to go out there and go live for a long period of time and make plays at all positions.”

Gray’s view of the competition so far is that all three quarterbacks have had “really good days” and “days there could be improvement.”

The coaches’ silence about any sort of day-to-day pecking order is by design.

Said Richt: “Coach Bobo in the first meeting told them, ‘Men, don’t worry about the depth chart. Don’t worry about what the media might say. Don’t worry about what your hometown might say. Just focus on becoming a better quarterback each day.”

Gray said the quarterbacks have been able to focus on day-to-day progress, rather than fretting the high-profile competition.

“We’re just all three of us trying to get better and correct the mistakes we’re making,” he said. “I think all of us have done a good job of trying to come out and work hard every day and take care of our business.”

For his part, Gray believes he has improved his passing accuracy.

“I felt like I’ve had some really good days where I’ve been hitting my targets better maybe than I did in the past,” he said. “I just have to keep on running the offense on a consistent basis so the coaches know every single time I’m in the huddle hopefully something good can happen.”

Don’t announce a starter until game day. The competition will make the eventual starter even better. I think Murray’s intangibles will see him to the top.

If the same coaches are evaluating who is best for the job like they did at RB last year, we may not know until late in the season, ie Richard Samuals was “clearly” the best RB on the team at the beginning of the year now he is a LB. Nothing against Richard but how can you miss that badly on the evaluation of position talent. Richt and Bobo may start Vince Vance at KO returns until they determine he should be on the O Line…. there is something to it.

I think Gray has improved, but i just have a strong feeling murray has this locked. Just comapring all the games important aspects, Leadership accuracy, protecting the ball, knowing play, and the ability to take of or roll out if pressured. Murray just seems to be a awesome QB. However, if gray is better and can stay consistent throughout the season then God bless him. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like Murray to get the job and in my estimation he would for sure if he was 2″ taller. It just depends what is more important to CMR and Bobo – time in the system (Gray), pocker passer with a cannon (Mett), or a dual threat QB (Murray) who can stand in the pocket, throw on the run with accuracy and turn it up field when there is nothing there.

I couldn't disagree

more Gravy Train. Let’s be honest here. It won’t be Gray. Fantastic athlete and worthy of some playing time elsewhere. But, there’s a reason that the guy played on the KICK-OFF TEAM last year. This is between the two freshmen. Let them compete over the spring and make a decision. The starter needs to take all first team reps when fall practice begins. Neither have any college experience, so the more reps the better.

My bet is on Aaron Murray. Gratham will have the defense playing at a very high level more so than what the offense is use to competing against. I believe Aaron Murray can handle the pressure better than Mett and Gray. Aaron proved last spring that he can hit his targets consistently and his quick released and mobility will bail him out of trouble more so than not.

However, we can’t stay down on him for last seasons performance. Anyone of you that has played sports at that age knows that to stay sharpe you have to play “live” all the time. He sat without playing basically for 4 years. I think it was unfair that myself, and others, expected what we did out of him last year.

I honestly can tell you that Im very concern about the inability of our coaches to pick a starter. I love our coaches but they did few serious mistakes that made me very concern and dont trust their analyses and I can list few examples that support my concerns:
1- Clearly Moreno was our best back and they red shirted him, that was a killer mistake
2- Joe T should have never started in 2006, clearly Stafford was the best QB, that was a huge mistake.
3-Rambo is clearly better that Bryan Evans and he was red shirted, while you kept Bryan screwing assignments
4- Cornelius Washington and Montez Robinson should have seen the field more often, they were doing great jobs in stupid Martinez system

Im just glad that Martinez is gone because his evaluation of talent is pathetic

I get a little tired of reading some fans’(?) criticism of our coaching decisions. Hindsight is 20-20. You guys don’t see these players practice every day for months and most of you never played football, let alone coached football. We need to get over the fact that we redshirted Knowshon Moreno. That redshirt year probably helped him learn a lot about the college game and made his RFr year much better. As far as Samuel being a RB, King was hurt during the early part of the season and Ealey had not learned the playbook as evidenced by his blocking early on. Kindly get off the coaches backs and act like fans.

This is the exact same stupid mistake Dawgs made with Stafford, Tereshinski and Cox a few years ago. Instead of picking the obvious choice (Stafford then, Murray now) and giving him time and repetitions with the starting offense, we’re going to split all the snaps evenly. It’s less of an issue in spring camp, but the Dawgs would be much better off to pick THE STARTER before summer camp and get him ready for the season.

ItalianDawg,

You are also very wrong on Joe T starting. He was a senior who had been at UGA for five years. CMR put him in their because he was familiar with the system. MS was a true freshman. Yes, MS was more talented but UGA had the rb’s that year to fuel the offense and it was wise to start off with a Senior instead of a true freshman. MS won the job halfway thru the season but if i were a coach i would start experience over a true freshman everyday. When MS became mature enough to start he was given the starting job. The coaches work with the players everyday and i can tell you that mistakes get you beat quicker than mismatches.. That’s why they didn’t initially start MS because they knew he would make freshman mistakes. JT was a senior who would not make those mistakes but wasn’t as talented. As coaches, you take the player who would make the less mistakes especially when one is a senior and the other a freshman..Perhaps if you had ever played football before you would know this.

It never ceases to amaze me of these people who use hindsight to make criticisms but leave out important facts…if you state something studid you need to be told it’s stupid where you won’t do it again.

jasont13,

I agree with you on AM injury issue keeping out of the season. But, i would also like to further the issue. Going from hs quarterback to Sec qb is a big step. AM was having to learn new terminologies and new defenses and reads. This is something that doesn’t happen overnight. It takes experience and alot of practice. Qb is a different position than RB or OL or DL. The qb has to make gametime decision on plays and reads that could either make or break the team. I never question a coach’s decision to bring a qb along slowly. If you throw someone in there when they are not ready then your risk destroying their confidence and them making mistakes and costing you the game.

Unfortunately, most of the people on this board never played football. I played H.S, college and even coached at an NAIA school and i can tell you that the coaches will put the very best players on the field. If a player is not playing it is because of two reasons. 1) the person ahead of them is physically superior to them or 2) the person is front of them makes less mistakes than them.

It’s a tough problem to have, but what a great problem to have. Still, I worry more about the defense than the offense. Our big O-line and running backs should keep the pressure, for the most part, off the QB who ever it is. Personally, Mettenberger should of had a stiffer penalty. Just my opinion. CMR had a chance to put his foot down and set an example. Then again I’m not sure what other measures are being taken in his punishment. All I know is that living down here in Tampa I heard a lot about Murray and it was all positive. I look forward to a better year no matter who the QB is! Go Dawgs!

I'll take a John Lastinger @ QB ANY day

March 26th, 2010
2:36 pm

All UGA needs this year is a guy that can manage the offense and lead it. His skills have to be sharp and crisp. The last guy, um, ah had neither skill. John Lastinger comes to mind and we ended up in 83? post Cotton Bowl victory over #1 Texas at # 4. Not bad. 10-9 forever in Dallas.

We need a guy that can move out and throw, if necessary AND can move the chains. We have the offensive tools to make it all go. Last year, a combination of no real leadership skills and our Qbs inability to PRODUCE consistently hurt him in building peer respect. Sad but true. KY game is good example. Ugh!!!

Also, UGA was greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen last year. I think last year is so much like the 79 UGA team with tons of youts. They took theri lumps and then we were ready for a 4 or 5 year run.

Time will tell.

Sorry to disagree man, but Joe T was a lowsy QB. If not for family connections he wouldn’t have even received a scholly. Joe T was terrible in every spring game for the 5 years he was on the team. Stafford was a true frosh, that’s true – but he was still a far better QB. Had the Dawgs committed to Stafford early (spring practice), he certainly would have been more polished at the start of the season. Joe T had no business starting as a QB in an SEC game. Even Cox (remember Colorado) was a better QB than Joe T at the time.

Whether it’s Murray or Zach IMO we need to start one of them versus Gray. If Gray has been here for 3 years and he hasn’t already locked it up then that tells you something about his skills there. While he might be marginally better(don’t know)it wouldn’t be worth trying to get another QB without experience ready for 2011. If we keep talking like what I’ve seen today, we will “ruin this state”
peace out dogs!

Listen up…UGA is a bonafied 2nd tier SEC football team. They were out recruited by Alabama, Tennessee (Yes, Coach Dooley recruited better than UGA…look at the facts), Auburn, LSU, and Florida. The ESPN top 150 high school prospects is the pool of players that I base my input on. Get your emotion out of the discussion and think hard and long; our beloved DAWGS are playing and recruiting as a 2nd tier SEC program…sad days on the gridiron are ahead regardless of who the QB is.

Always remember…

1. When a stranger tells you his salary…he’s LYING.
2. When someone brags about owning this, that and the other…he’s LYING.
3. When a guy talks about his athletic conquests…he’s LYING.

Lying to strangers, people whom you believe can neither verify nor debunk your boasts, is the ultimate sign of insecurity. And it is also a form of flattery. That person wants SO badly to impress someone, but is not able to do so in reality, that boasting anonymously is the only release that he (or she) has available.

Now, and I’m not going to name the blogger here, but we all know who it is…one of two possibilities exist:

1. This “person”, so highly educated, has never actually set foot in a classroom at GT, NGC, KSU or DCC for that matter.

2. The gnome of whom we speak is so absolutely (and apparently often) inebriated that he has what we can refer to as a “wet brain”.

Okay, now let’s see if it responds…or if it has already passed out for the night (6:11PM)

NGC for my undergrad and the Coles School for my MBA. You can wrestle and play basketball. You can play Baseball and golf too. It all depends on your coaches. Football Head coach was Wrestling coach and the Foorball D backs coach was the Basketball coach. Smallbore Rifle Shooting was during Baseball season too. NGC also had the only FULL Contact Intramural Football in the country, but I guess you guys have all the answewrs to everything because you are DAWGS. HAHAHAHHAAHAH. I can prove what I said Look it up it is all on the WEB. Go ahead and prove me wrong. I have been going to Tech games since 74, went to Peper Rogers football camp and Carolina Basketball camp when MJ was a nobody Freshman. NEXT you A..hole DAWGS.

Murray is the only one of the three with the talent to win in the SEC. He should have been in there last year midway through the season. Then we wouldn’t have the QB with no experience deal this spring. And to all those who drank the Kool-Aid last year, yes, maybe Cox gave us the best chance to win, but in the SEC who cares after you lose 4 games? I would rather have lost an extra game last year and have an experienced qb coming into the spring. Competition is good for the individuals in the competition but not necessarily for the team. Please end this charade and name a clear starter for the team’s sake, CMR.

Ely from Plant in Tampa...

March 26th, 2010
7:22 pm

Philip Ely did a real good job when he stepped in for Murray…the coach made adjustments when Murray went down by keeping a blocking back to help out…Plant also started to run a more balanced attack by running the ball more…point of fact was that Murray during his Jr year was the leading rusher on the team w/ about 1000 yds on around 100 carries (yea right, he’s injury prone)..BTW, Ely didn’t play at the start of last year because of cracked bones in his back and they still won all but one…now days Plant plays a really balanced attack, and I’m sure that all you real fans are aware that your DAWGS are trying to get their RB/LB James Wilder Jr…see Plants coach makes adjustment to his talent…interesting concept

We have the coaches on defense. Lets see what Bobo will do. I fear that he is out classed by the DC’s he will face.

I have news for everyone: since you don’t know who will be selected wouldn’t it be better if we accepted the verdict as we accept the Election of the President? He’s Head Dawg because the ones who matter, the coaches, are the ones who determine that from closeup observation and if it ain’t one of the ones you cheer for, then they are Vice-Presidents-in-waiting. Long live the President and the Vice-Presidents are there because they are capable of running the system if anything happens to the Pres. All are Dawgs that have our best wishes in their experience at Georgia. I’ll scream louder than any of you for all three. They are all worthy recipients of our fielty, no matter which one is first.

People talk about how UGA having a new qb will hurt them. CTG is going to have this defense ready with 2 of the best pass rushing LBs in the SEC in Houston and Washington. Team that with a good dline and talent all over the secondary. King and Ealey have said they will be the first tandem at Georgia to have 2 1000 yard seasons, behind our oline I believe them. The best WR in the country in AJ and the best TE corp in the country with White and Charles. Murray will be the starter and did not Bama just win a NC with a qb who had never taken a snap in college football before last season. Get ready here come the DAWGS.

Murray is gonna be your QB. Gray couldn’t beat out Cox last season, and if Murray hadn’t gotten hurt he would have taken over for Cox imo. You can forget about Mettenberger, and don’t blame it on the trouble he got into, Murray is just on another level. Murray, Gray, then Mett is your QB depth chart in ‘10.

I would love to see Coach Bobo run the wishbone with either Gray or Murry at QB, Chapus or Munzenmaier at FB, Green at WR, Charles at TE, and Ealey & King at RB. The D would go crazy trying to figure out who to double team while we piled up the yards and ran up the score. Our O line should be prime to suppoet this formation this year. Looking forward to the season.

I love how all of you people think y’all have such great football minds…. 90% of you have never played a down past middle or high school and if you did…. i would bet you were not worth 50 cents. How do any of you know who is going to play QB next year? You have only seen one kid play. If you were sober enough to remember the Gray kid playing…. I also love you guys that are always on our coaches, if you think you can do a better job, quit your current one and go apply for a Grad Asst. job, they work about 80 hours a week don’t make crap and have no life outside of football. So, go for it, you football gods…. also, lastly if you never went to school at UGA please, find another team to cheer for, us graduates are tired of y’all giving us a bad name.

I wonder if this year will be the year that Richt wises up and realizes that Willie was only part of the problem. If he finally figures out Bozo was the other half, his win record against FL might improve. You can’t beat somebody—Urban—with a nobody—Bobo.
