Notes: Dogs seek taller cornerbacks; Grantham praises Garner; full pads Saturday

(UPDATE: For a report on Saturday’s practice, please click here.)

There was no football practice Friday. The Dogs will hold their fourth session of spring ball Saturday in Sanford Stadium, their first in full pads. Meanwhile, a few notes and quotes:

  • The overhaul of Georgia’s defensive staff and scheme naturally affects the type of players the Dogs are looking to recruit. “I mean, you got different body types, because you got to get outside linebacker types and your defensive end and nose types,” said Rodney Garner, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. He added that new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and new defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos “like taller corners. So we want bigger corners, too. So it’s really just trying to find exactly what [Grantham] wants to fit his scheme.”
  • Grantham said Garner, the only holdover from the previous defensive staff, “has meshed very well. Rodney is a conscientious guy. He’s worked hard to understand what we want to get taught. I think he works his guys extremely hard in practice.  I think he has done a good job so far with the guys, and I have been pleased with the progress — not only him but, really, I’ve been pleased with the way the coaches have worked and the way the players have responded.”
  • It takes good players to have a good defense, yes, “but everybody also has to understand their role,” Grantham said. “‘What is my role on the team? What do I do to contribute?’ Right now, everybody is working hard to define their role to me. They’re showing us their abilities. They’re showing us how much they want to play. They’re showing us how they can learn, showing us how they’ll hustle to the ball. Because to me we’re going to put guys out there who are physical and give effort. And if we do that, we’ll beat you.”
  • It’s not just the players learning a new defensive scheme. None of the coaches — not Garner, not Lakatos, not Warren Belin — has ever coached in Grantham’s 3-4 system before.  Said Garner: “Football is football, but it’s . . . definitely a much different scheme than what we did. The terminology is totally different. So it’s a lot to learn, a lot to grasp. We’re putting a lot in at a time, so it’s a lot for us [coaches] too. We’re trying to learn it and get it taught to our kids. We’ve got to get this package put in. Coach Grantham is going full speed. He’s trying to get everything in so we can be good at it. . . .  We’re all in there trying to learn exactly . . . his terminology, how he wants to call it, everything.”
  • Several of you have asked about Trinton Sturdivant’s comeback from his second torn ACL. He’s not participating in spring practice, but he is still expected to be back for preseason camp in August. Same goes for Justin Anderson and Tanner Strickland, missing the spring because of shoulder injuries.
  • And to end on a positive note, Mark Richt had this to say after Thursday’s practice:  “I’m really encouraged right now. It’s early, but I’m encouraged right now.”

If you missed it: Richard Samuel has changed positions . . . again.

Tim it sure seems as if UGA has had more than their share of shoulder injuries over the years. Do you agree and if so do you have any theories why?

Understand his reason for wanting taller cornerbacks after watching Prince Miller get burned and out jumped so many times by taller receivers last year.

Swim moves and 340lb DLs put a lot of torque on shoulders. Also probably got more muscle mass than the joints and bones are designed for.

Dawg Fan: Although shoulder injuries have always been very common in football, I agree that it does seem UGA has had more than its share the past couple of years. Then again, there have been a lot of high-profile shoulder injuries elsewhere too. Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy, for example.

Hooray for a real DC…thank you Coach Grantham for coming to UGA. As for Willie, who didn’t know that you don’t recruit or need 5′8″ cornerbacks since most wide receivers are 6′+. Memo to CMR: From now on, hire coaches who can coach up, not roomies (or you may be the next Ray Golf, Jim Donnan).

I think Coach Belin is going to be an excellent hire. First of all, he was a recruiting coordinator so you know he should be good at that. Plus, Vanderbilt has had good defenses under him. I’m really excited about recruiting taller corners. Wr now at 6 foot plus and 200+ pounds. We need someone to get physical and fight with them over the ball.

I hope CTG is not just being a statesman with his kind comments about CRG, but we will know exactly how cool everybody is once the season gets started and we run accross some adversity.
Is it just me or does it seem that CTG is wired differently than how CMR is? I hope this doesn’t create any issues in the future because CTG seems the type to speak his mind and we all know that CMR is nothing close to that.
I am pulling for Sturdivant all the way, hope he can make through the whole season next year.

I’m liking what I am hearing on defense. Taller corners. I think that we’ve been mismatched for the past couple of years in the defensive backfield. Our opponents have had a field day throwing on us. That has opened up the run so we had trouble stopping anyone. The scores reflect this. It was time for a change and will be interesting to see how the defense performs this year. Hopefully we can recruit what we really want.

The chronic shoulder injuries that have plagued us since Richts arrival have to be related to the Strength program in some way. Something we are doing or overdoing or whatever it is there is no way its a coincidence.
I don’t remember Goff or Donnan ever having chronic shoulder problems year after year like we do now. Of course with Donnan it was always some sort of muscle cramp which again was related to something they were or were not doing properly in the S&C program.

I’m pretty sure UGA always went after the tallest and fastest corners out there, but there is a whole bunch of competition out for these few and far in between players (they have their pick of schools and perhaps UGA can become a favorite)…there just aren’t that many CB’s that have it all…so, if you can’t get the size/speed guy, then the next skill to go after is speed (tall guys always look funny giving chase)…Darrell Green was 5′8″ and fast…Ronde Barber is 5′10″ and a great cover corner, so let’s hope the DAWGS can get os of the combo guys going forward

It’s not abilities with these guys, it’s getting them to BELIEVE in their abilities. UGA hasn’t been good AT ALL in that area. These guys need to be tested, and get some easy success, and then tested at some hard challenges and succeeding there too.

Now to the subject of the story…….. I have a gut feel CMR outdid his own expectations when he hired Grantham, Belin, Lakatos……..and held on to Rodney Garner…….Winning football starts with chemistry ! I’ve seen average teams through the years that had good chemistry become bigtime winners, perhaps you’ve seen the same. It would appear to me Coach Todd Grantham is doing everything he can to develope chemistry first, with his coaches and players. He has the talent, and personally, regardless of what you read, converting to an attack 3-4, is much simpler because players can finally pin their ears back and drill the living crap out of someone ! Thats fun to a young college kid trying to make a name for himself…………GO DOGS !!! GATA !!! The 2010 UGA football season is, well, you know, lookin-up !!

Louie,

WHAT about them Jackets? Two nobody teams playing each other and your team finally found the free throw line for the first time all year. Didn’t make a goal the last part of the game but OKST handed you the game which could have just as easily gone the other way. Ohio St will bring your buzz high down tomorrow.

The idiots that trashed the North Campus last year brought about the changes that only affect the North Campus. Most of the “pigs” that trashed the area last year didn’t even attend the game. Most of the offending “pigs” were students and non student friends of students that don’t care about the game. My wife and I attended the next home game and we were impressed with the evident change from within the fan base in respects to the cleanliness of the campus. The student volunteers we saw out handing out trash bags and ensuring everyone knew where the extra trash containers were at were exceptional and I was very impressed with those kids. Did Mr. Adams over react? In my opinion no. He took steps to eliminate the core problem. Is there still trash? Yes but not out of the ordinary considering over 100,000 extra people converge in a small area for an 18 hr period. Any other school has the same issue and handles it the same. They haven’t had anyone take pictures with their camera phones and post it on YouTube yet.

So go ahead and laugh your buzz off if it makes you feel better. Dog fans will have the last laugh once the recruits that are being sought after and the existing players take hold in this new defense (the old one did a job on you guys didn’t they?) and continue to dominate your Buzz town and make a serious run for the SEC title for years to come.

I for one applaud going out and getting some D. guys that can run and can cover and with some size. Martinez put a premium on back peddling with midgets and that was how he saw defense in the SEC. TG&G, as far as CWM and his coaching style is concerned.

There is a new day dawning for UGA and such tumultuous coaching things must happen about every three or four years in order to keep it fresh and invigorated. Lifetime gigs like Dooley and Shug Jordan and Bobby Dodd, Paul “Bear” Bryant and Johnny Vaught and John Majors had are Gone With the Fricking Wind.

I’m sure 6′2″ 4.3 corners are everywhere. Coach Martinez probably said to get tiny guys so they couldn’t cover big receivers.

Little guys are faster. Big guys are slower. Corners have to be the fastest players on the field in order to close and cover. When you can get the rare big guy with speed, get him.

You can covert a high school WR to corner pretty easily. WR’s have both the size and speed to play the 3-4 corner. Ideally, ypu want a guy who has played DB and WR in high school, because he can understand how WR’s think.

They’re stuck in 4th place in the SEC behind LSU, ‘Bama and Florida, with Auburn and UT nipping at their heels. Enjoy!

Since about 1966, Yech has gone thru football coaches every 4.5 years and CPJ is in his 3rd. He has made his mark at Tech with the Urange bowl loss ( like Dodd did too ) and he must build it to higher levels or he will be regressing. Me thinks the latter is about to happen. That middle school, triple break offense is so 1960s and 70s. It was junked by the good schools years before him.

ACC is caught on now and CPJ is on the downhill side of his tech career. 4.5 years and they ALL leave one way or other.

not too bad in the size dept, wonder how they are speed wise and leaping ability…of course you can have all the size, speed, and leaping ability, but if you can’t cover, then you’re a safety

Agree with Delbert, who cares how tall they are? We just need the best guys we can get. Alabama just won a NC with the 3-4 defense and both CB under 6′. J.Arenas is5′9″ for pete sake. UF has one CB on thier entire roster over 6′ and he is mostly a ST guy. Their best CB is 5′11″. Some body else mentioned the pass rush, or lack of. That will make anybody look “short”. I’m not against recruiting bigger CB, but the 2 best teams in the SEC for the past couple of years have proven that height at that position is really a non-factor.

so, our 2 deep CB was already going to be a couple of 5′11′ guys, 6′1″, 6′2″. Good thing Grantham wants taller guys since thats what we had.

No matter what the truth is, I’m very convinced that bringing in Grantham is changing the urgency UGA plays with. He wants guys to be tenacious like they are in the NFL. Grantham must be very enthused to be the head honcho on D again as well as to return to college, and I think Dawgs fans are really going to be happy from the get-go. Richt just needs to shore up the offense and stay afloat for other great defensive coaches because Grantham probably will only be around a couple years if he is successful so that he can be a head coach.

I’ve seen pictures of a young Al Groh giving a laddle of water to General Custard right before the Battle of the Alamo.

SC’s receivers: 6′6″, 6′5″, 6′4″, 6′3″ (Saunders, Gurley, Barnes, Jeffrey). Yeah, UGA needs taller corners.
