Bulldogs’ Richard Samuel changes positions . . . again

ATHENS –- Richard Samuel has changed positions again, although it’s a less substantial move this time.

Samuel, who switched sides of the ball when he moved from tailback to outside linebacker for the start of  Georgia’s spring football practice, shifted to inside linebacker Thursday.

“I think he’s a natural [inside linebacker],” defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said after a late-afternoon practice. “He can run. He can cover. And . . . you can still blitz as an inside guy, but there is a little bit more coverage element involved and that would utilize his speed.”

Head coach Mark Richt agreed that inside linebacker is a more natural spot for Samuel. “We started him outside, a little bit  because of depth issues at outside linebacker,” Richt said. “To give him more of a fair opportunity, we moved him inside.”

Samuel joins an inside-linebacker group that includes Darryl Gamble, Akeem Dent, Marcus Dowtin and Christian Robinson.

Georgia’s starting tailback at the start of last season, Samuel slipped well behind Caleb King and Washaun Ealey on the depth chart at the position by the second half of the season. He played both tailback and linebacker in high school.

After Thursday’s practice, the third of spring ball, Grantham said the transition to the 3-4 defense is on schedule.

“I think that we are on track,” he said. “I’m not discouraged. I’m pleased. . . . If we continue to work like I’ve seen us work, we’ll be fine

“Actually, it’s funny,” Grantham added. “There are things I thought might be hard that [the players] have picked up, and there are things I thought might be easy that were a little harder for them. But I have been pleased with what they have understood and grasped, because we have thrown quite a bit at them and it’s all been new.”

For the third consecutive practice, quarterback Aaron Murray was wearing a glove on his throwing hand.

Asked if he’d ever had a quarterback wear a glove before, Richt said: “Not on a 70-degree day.”

Richt added that Murray “feels like it helps him grip the ball better.”

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner said Kwame Geathers is the only player working exclusively at the nose position. DeAngelo Tyson and Abry Jones are working at both nose and end, Garner said. . . . Safety Shawn Williams again worked with the No. 1 secondary Thursday. . . . Safety Jakar Hamilton, slowed on Tuesday by a foot injury, practiced Thursday and seemed fine. . . .  Offensive lineman Dallas Lee left practice for a few minutes with what Richt called as asthma episode, then returned. . . .  Tony Grantham, an assistant coach at Navy and younger brother of Georgia’s defensive coordinator, watched  practice.

I wish him luck on the move to ILB. I hope it works out for him. Richard has been a total team player since he arrived at UGA, doing whatever the team needed and the coaches have asked of him.

Gee, I always thought you used the speed guys on the outside. I only ended up moving a guy inside because they were too dumb to learn all the reads and coverages on the edge. After reading Grantham’s explanation I see what a fool I was all along.

The great thing for Richard in this is that he should make a good NFL linebacker, I”m not so sure he could have made it as a running back.

Did Mett get a raise or a fine? Just curious as to the discipline CMR will administer. I’m leaning toward the raise.
Does your basketball team play tonight or tomorrow? I couldn’t find in my TV guide. Oh yeah, where is your baseball team ranked? 6-5 we walked this state.

Where’s my tanning bed? They promised me a tanning bed if I fired Willie. I don’t want to use that spray on tan again this year. I ruined 4 of my shirts. I think we will be better this year. I gave Mett a raise for getting drunk. I don’t think he will play much but the other players respected my decision.

Yawn…Stinger, you prove how little Trek fans know about College Athletics. For starters, football is the only sport that matters, and your best team in 20 years lost to our worst team in 15 years. Ouch. How’s that ACC Champions T-Shirt workin out for you?

Further, are you taunting for a mid-week victory in college baseball? I’m sure you’re aware that the mid-week games typically feature your weakest pitcher and subs. That’s b/c the 3 game weekend series is far more critical to your season. Trek really put their low self esteem on display by bringing out the Rambling Puke, your dog ugly cheerleaders and those dorks with wigs for a Tuesday nite baseball game? Yikes.

Keep tauntin Stinger, the inner pain and frustration of never touching a woman has found a worthy avenue.

Where did Bryce Brown go? Hope it works out for Richard the kid seems like a team player.

Yes Mark Twain you are an idiot. Who do you think takes the tightend down the middle or the rb coming out of the backfield on an inside route. All linebackers must be able to play pass defense these days and Richard has pretty good speed for a linebacker.

Stinger, he can tackle those jackets plenty good enough. But then again, what would a jacket know about tackling?

Stinger…love the humor try some of this…tech has a total…a total of 8 first round draft picks since he draft started in 1937. UGA has 13 in the last 12 years..Oh and btw in the only sport that counts FOOTBALL…if I am not mistaken, and I am not, 60-39 is the all time record…oh and btw the Dooley/Richt years 23-7….have a good guffaw over that one

In High School, Richard Samuel was playing his LB position, drilling the living crap out of the other teams RBs, The game was stopped, the ref went over to Richards coach, and asked ” Please tell that kid to lighten-up, or he is going to seriously hurt somebody”…………………That my friends, is a true story. I just can’t wait to see ol Richard do his thing with SEC RBs, Tight Ends over the middle, and to zero in on that QB from downtown Atlanta, who couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean, you know, the yellow one. whatdayasay Stinger buddy ? Me thinks yo boi gonna get poped.

I just heard Grantham’s old team is switching positions with Keith Brooking and DeMarcus Ware in order to cover those speedy tight ends and running backs out of the backfield. Gotta have more speed inside! The Falcons should draft Weatherspoon and move Lofton outside. He’s too slow for the middle.

Unfortunately, that is coach speak for “unfortunately, even though we thought he had the best chance to play at OLB because we needed player there due to a lack of depth, he cannot play there, either, just as he was a bust at RB and got passed by #3 and #4. So, he probably will not see the playing field at all, except as possibly a special teams player”.

Too, bad – I hate it when kids dreams are shattered because the coaches do not coach them to get better…from starting RB to the other side of the ball and, now, totally off the field. He probably should think about transferring to a 1AA school if he wants to ever play again.

Dawgdip, Brown told Dooley he was leaving UT. According to Dooley, “(He has) concerns that I believe stem from — and he told me stem from — No.1, some of the reasons why he came here, and No. 2, his experience over the first six months he has been here.” Number 2 is something that can be debated, but I am pretty sure number 1 has something to do with some of the shady stuff that Kiffen and Orgeron have been pulling in recruiting. Honestly, UT is probably lucky both are gone.

NICE SPIN!!! UGA staff needs to be hired by OBAMA.

Kid was a bust at tailback with his upright running style – and now is on his third position in less than 6 months. Doubt this kid will start.

Face it – some kids are football players that are great athletes – and some kids are great athletes – trying to be football players.

I hear Samuels is a good student – which is a great thing as he needs to enjoy his football experience and get ready for the real world soon.
