Murray gets a play from Bobo at Tuesday's practice. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS — Some of you have noticed in photos from Georgia’s spring football practices that quarterback Aaron Murray is wearing a glove on his throwing hand.
Which, of course, has led to the question: What’s up with that?
Basically, Murray said after practice Tuesday, it’s a spring-practice experiment.
Surrounded by a half dozen reporters in the Butts-Mehre building -– hey, welcome to life in the limelight — Murray said he just happened to wear a glove for the first time when throwing on his own on a particularly cold day this winter, surprisingly liked the results and has stuck with it, even on a nice, sunny day like Tuesday.
“The ball is pretty slick,” Murray said. “I felt good with [the glove], so I tried it out for a couple of more weeks and continued to like it. So I finally talked to the coaches about it. They said if I want to try it out, spring is a good time to try it out. ”
So far, he feels it provides a better grip and more control of the ball.
Whether Murray, who is battling for the starting quarterback job, continues to wear the glove into the season remains to be determined.
Gloves have become a bit of a trend among NFL quarterbacks, with Kurt Warner, Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady, among others, wearing them in games in recent seasons. Warner wore them in all games the past three years, even in Arizona. Others wear them only in cold-weather games.
As with many things in football, there are arguments on both sides of quarterbacks wearing gloves. Some say it improves grip and ball security and perhaps offers protection against hand injuries. Others say a glove hurts passing accuracy and that a quarterback needs full feel of the ball.
Murray, by the way, reports no problems with his arm this spring after missing a big chunk of practice time last season, his redshirt year, with tendinitis in his triceps and forearm. “Arm feels great. Arm feels strong,” Murray said. “I’m taking good care of it.”
Murray and fellow quarterbacks Logan Gray and Zach Mettenberger are sharing snaps evenly in spring practice, and Murray said there are more than enough snaps to go around. “Oh, it’s plenty of reps,” he said Tuesday. “I was talking with Logan today, and at one point in practice, we’re, like, ‘Man, there’s a lot of reps we’re getting right now.’ . . . They’re working us out there pretty good, which is good because we need as much practice as we can get right now.”

I don’t care how you spell it, as long as you don’t say what number you came in trying to post.
Can anyone explain the logic of claiming diminished accuracy from using the glove if it gives better grip and control of the ball?
I think the fact Kurt Warner wore them in Arizona speaks for itself. The guy was an amazingly accurate QB when he had time to throw.

Being not an overly tall fellow…it would seem to follow that his hands would be proportional to his body…in which case a glove may provide added grip on the ball and therefore, peace of mind.

It just depends on personal preference. I’ve tried to throw w/ a glove & can’t do it. For me, the ball sticks to the glove & I can’t get it to spiral, but some guys do like to throw w/ one. I do like to wear a glove on my right, non-throwing hand.

he is kinda short and my guess would be, he kinda has small hands too. this is a good report Tim, it’s the first i’ve heard of it. i’ll be asking my nephew the next time i talk to him and see what he has to say about it. get back to ya on that. one thing he, my nephew, did say to me a couple of weeks ago, is that he was getting a “gut feeling” that Mett was possibly going to be the guy next fall, but that was only his own assertion, of which comes from the other side of the ball. so what does he know, right?

If wearing the glove improves his grip on the ball, then by all means wear it. Improved grip would help accuracy and velocity, as long as he doesn’t grip the ball too tightly – too tight of a grip will cause the ball to be released below the intended flight path.
A glove with some tack will help with the problems presented by a slick ball and/or small hands.

Good question – seeing that Kentucky beat UGA in football AGAIN this year – making 2 wins out of the last 4 years – it is obvious that the two programs are comparable.

Guys, my concern is the state of his arm. Not a glove on his hand. If his arm is as good as last year’s Spring Game, you pot shot artists opponents above will be left shaking your head when we play you! I know that you guys can hope the worst for our A -Dawg QB(that brother meyers wanted badly, by the way) but I am believing for the best in our fine young man. HE WAS THE BEST QB ON THE FIELD LAST YEAR AT G-GAME and most of us know it. By design with the red shirt, he just did not get an opportunity to show it during the regular season. I believe that decision was a Georgia net lost. Particularly, with the game experience he would have acquired. I looking forward to April 10 to see Murray and the rest of our DAWGS in action! Moore will get drafted the same reason Reggie Brown was drafted. The Pro Day at UGA his stats were extremely good. Brown was never a true stud at UGA, but his speed and strength were undeniable. Scouts will look at the same measurables w/ Moore and see a potential diamond in the rough and take a flier on him in the 4th-5th rounds.

The complaints about wearing gloves usually comes from someone asked to wear one for the first time during a game. It is an adjustment, so doing it during the off season is fine. Just don’t change during the season.
As for Michael Moore, he is a possession type receiver, and having the strength he does, makes him better able to handle the hits in traffic. I have never seen him as a Green type burner, but he is by no means slow. Stafford used to find Moore when he was open but Cox didn’t. As with any receiver, a good QB can make Moore productive.

Better grip on the ball is not always a good thing for accuracy in passing. Sometimes it sticks a little too much. Grip is fine, but you need feel and touch in your index finger for maximum accuracy. In my experience, if the glove is really tight in the fingers and no seams at the tip of your index finger…all is good.

Takedowndog, you’re an idiot. Logan Gray was EASILY the best qb on the field for the G-Day game last year. And Aaron Murray was redshirted in part due to tendenitis in his throwing arm, he couldn’t throw for 5 weeks. That kinda slowed down his development. Glove or no glove what does it matter? It won’t help him against the gators and if Georgia ever did win the east again it dang sure wouldn’t help him against the Bammers. Matter of fact I don’t think it will help him against the Kentucky mildcats.
I’m betting that the chickens, the mildcats, and the gators of course all beat UGA this year to make Richt 12-13 against the east over the last 5 years. And that my friends is a cause for firing. Murray can’t be very good if he couldn’t even beat out Logan Young for the backup job. How bad is Logan Young. Just ask the gators and Brandon Spikes after his pick 6 against young mr. Logan Richt is gone after this year. Book it.

Look, the reason he’s wearing the glove is so that he doesn’t leave any fingerprints on the ball. Then when he throws an interception and blows up games, Mark Richt can blame it on Joe Cox. He brilliantly came up with this idea cause the dawg nation hated Joe Cox and blamed him for everything and Richt knows that as long as they don’t discover that he’s an offensive mental midget, he’ll be able to keep his job long enough to pay off the dentist.

Brantley will go in the 1st round and all 5′ 10″ of Murray will go in the 10th if at all. Not saying Murray won’t be a great college qb at Georgia (like David Green or Tebow at FL) but am saying he will hit the brick wall in college. Don’t think he can separate himself from the other two untill 2011.
Murray's a big kid
March 17th, 2010
6:42 pm
Don’t know why some chowderheads think Murray’s not over 6 foot, but if given the chance you’ll see that he’s easily 6′ +, and he’s built like an athlete. He’s not tall and gangly, but he’s a very solid 210 lbs. The kid’s an athlete and he could have been successful at any sport.
As far as using a glove, golly gee wilikers I wonder why WR’s wear them. The gloves provide an advantage in controlling the ball. So, why wouldn’t someone use a glove. Standing back in a shotgun formation and the ball comes back a little off kilter and you put out a gloved hand(s) and the ball sticks while your eyes remain down-field. He’s a smart kid and I’m sure by watching a few NFL QB’s using them, why WOULDN”T he try them out. Isn’t practice where you try out new things? I wouldn’t loose any sleep over this, the kid’s no dummy.

I agree. Murray will rock, Colt McCoy called Murray “one of the best he’d ever seen”. I think Colt McCoy knows a bit more about the college QB position than Florida bloggers. Ha, too funny.
UGA will go 14-0 in 2010 and 2011.
I agree, Brantley will be a flop and struggle against competition. He’ll be crying when Bama & LSU play him, much less UGA’s Grantham.
Meyer won’t be able to shield his little pup anymore–no more Charleston Southerns, or 2b foes, Brantley will FINALLY, for the 1st time in his career, face a tough set of foes. And he will flop.
Brantley's no chump..
March 17th, 2010
6:57 pm
Brantley’s no chump, and the 2B competition in Florida is pretty good. Madison County, JAX Boles, and numerous other Div 2 schools send plenty of players to Div 1 programs. Murray played in a higher division, which equates to SCHOOL SIZE. Take a look at some of the teams Plant played and their records. Middleton, Blake, Leto, etc. all had loosing records and only a handful of good players. So, don’t sell short the competition Brantley played ith/against. That being said, Murray maybe the BEST H.S. QB ever. He destroyed Robert Marve’s records and looks way smoother than Marve, or for that matter Stephen Garcia ever did in H.S (watch the videos and you’ll see). You DAWG fan’s will love the next four years. With proper coaching, he’ll be rewriting some record books. Hang in there with him.

id Kentucky have a PRO day too?
Good question – seeing that Kentucky beat UGA in football AGAIN this year – making 2 wins out of the last 4 years – it is obvious that the two programs are comparable.
Saw this in a post the other day:
Donnan’s last 4 year SEC EAST record: 13-7
Richt’s last 4 year SEC EAST record: 10-10
Florida’s last 4 year SEC EAST record: 19-1
WOW – I knew UGA had slid back – but 10-10??????????????

Probably but that doesn’t mean much for the UGA football team. No trophies for most NFL players, those players already in the NFL didn’t bring anything special to UGA during their 3-4 years, and seeing that Florida has had a top 3 class according to Rivals 4 of the last 5 years shows recruits don’t care too much about which school sends more players to the NFL. They want to win and if they are good enough they will make it to the pros anyway.

Shut up about Murray’s hieght already. Murray is taller than Shockley was and Shock won an sec title. Murray is taller than Eric Zier too. That is two of the best qb’s to ever wear Georgia uniform. Met is the tallest QB to ever play at Georgia. Being to tall is more of a problem than being 6′1 like Murray is. You have to be able to make plays with your feet in the sec at qb. This is not the NFL were the rules are different for protecting the QB. In the NFl you can’t touch the qb except in the stomach.

It’s times like these that I wonder why I even bother reading this stuff, much less responding. But here it goes anyways. First, dude is wearing a glove. Other successful QB’s do the same. If he thinks it makes him better, then that’s what he should do. Why it’s news is beyond me.
And I don’t know what goes on at the Trade School blog, or the Bama blog or wherever. Are there really a bunch of UGA posters over there making donkeys of themselves? Because jeez, the amount of Tech people obsessed with posting on this blog is hilarious. Of course, when order is restored to the universe next year, and Tech returns to the depths of a bad conference, they’ll all crawl back into the woodwork as usual.
I’ve got no ties to either school. But am a UGA fan mostly because of the way Tech people act. UGA fan is a UGA fan 24/7/365. Shows his colors, wears his gear win or lose. Tech people mostly are people you’d never know were Tech fans, or college sports fans in general, UNTIL they actually have a decent year, maybe beat the Dawgs and then it’s like roaches crawling out of the woodwork everywhere.
