Why is Georgia QB Aaron Murray wearing a glove on his throwing hand?

ATHENS — Some of you have noticed in photos from Georgia’s  spring football practices that  quarterback Aaron Murray is wearing a glove on his throwing hand.

Which, of course, has led to the question: What’s up with that?

Basically, Murray said after practice Tuesday, it’s a spring-practice experiment.

Surrounded by a half dozen reporters in the Butts-Mehre building -– hey, welcome to life in the limelight — Murray said he just happened to wear a glove for the first time when throwing on his own on a particularly cold day this winter,  surprisingly liked the results and has stuck with it, even on a nice, sunny day like Tuesday.

“The ball is pretty slick,” Murray said. “I felt good with [the glove], so I tried it out for a couple of more weeks and continued to like it. So I finally talked to the coaches about it. They said if I want to try it out, spring is a good time to try it out. ”

So far, he feels it provides a better grip and more control of the ball.

Whether Murray, who is battling for the starting quarterback job, continues to wear the glove into the  season remains to be determined.

Gloves have become a bit of a trend among NFL quarterbacks, with Kurt Warner, Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady, among others, wearing them in games in recent seasons.  Warner wore them in all games the past three years, even in Arizona. Others wear them only in cold-weather games.

As with many things in football, there are arguments on both sides of quarterbacks wearing gloves.  Some say it  improves grip and ball security and perhaps offers protection against hand injuries. Others say a glove hurts passing accuracy and that a quarterback needs full feel of the ball.

Murray, by the way, reports no problems with his arm this spring after missing a big chunk of practice time last season, his redshirt year, with tendinitis in his triceps and forearm.  “Arm feels great. Arm feels strong,” Murray said. “I’m taking good care of it.”

Murray and fellow quarterbacks Logan Gray and Zach Mettenberger are sharing snaps evenly in spring practice, and Murray said there are more than enough snaps to go around. “Oh, it’s plenty of reps,” he said Tuesday.  “I was talking with Logan today, and at one point in practice, we’re, like, ‘Man, there’s a lot of reps we’re getting right now.’  . . .  They’re working us out there pretty good, which is good because we need as much practice as we can get right now.”

Joe Cox had more passing yards than Tim Tebow in 2009 and both cried after a major career losses. Will he go before Tim in the draft?

sweet home alabama…not only is richt three and one against alabama but the schedule is rotated therefore, regardless of how much you call on us to “man up” we can only play who is on the schedule…onto the main topic…if he feels he can throw more accuaratley and grip the ball better then go for it by all means.

south – your teams suck, yet you think they are great. And if your team is great, you think that makes you great. But REALLY UF, TN and KY own you, that means you really are pathetic. Just the facts! BTW, winning one game against your in-state rival doesn’t make your season, just like it doesn’t make Tech’s season. ACC champs, not Shreveport!

JS – the fact that you are on this blog trying to hate on UGA shows how good we are as a program and one down year doesn’t mean a thing.

All you have done here is show what an ingorant idiot you are. By the way, winning the ACC and getting blown out in BCS game isn’t really anything to brag about.

The rumor is his hands are so big he needs the glove to try and not overwhelm the ball with so much contact.

Makes sense. That’s probably why he did so well in high school.

Good to see him learning from Brady and Warner. Looks like a smart guy.

Wasn’t hating on UGA as much as hating on a “type of UGA fan” that even UGA fans don’t always like. I certainly don’t know it all and never have claimed to. Yes, UGA has had a down year, I get it. I was trying to get “south” to understand that FACT.

JS – I understand we had a down year and beating Tech doesn’t make up for that and if you look, I was only responding to Stinger. Has nothing to do with who had a great year, but if your gonna talk smack when we beat you on the field, I’m gonna respond to that.

So maybe you meant to hate on Stinger?

Better grip on the ball is not always a good thing for accuracy in passing. Sometimes it sticks a little too much. Grip is fine, but you need feel and touch in your index finger for maximum accuracy. In my experience, if the glove is really tight in the fingers and no seams at the tip of your index finger…all is good.

Tim, tomorrow, can you let us know what Logan Gray has for breakfast….that should be another great piece of beat reporting

JS

Yes, nice decade against Tech. Most of the games were very close and well played, I think you guys got 2 blowouts in those 8. BUT, every year but one you beat Tech, you lost to Florida. Not only lost to Floriday, but lost by double digits every year but one. So exactly how do you run a state when you lose to your biggest rival 17 out of 20 (15 blowouts). Just sayin!

AL. E. GATOR, you’re an idiot. The difference between Donnan and Richt is 2 SEC championships, and playing for 4.

Sweet Home Alabama, you’re an idiot. Their in the same conference, they don’t “schedule” eachother. They’re on a rotating system that was set up by the SEC.

Takedowndog, you’re an idiot. Logan Gray was EASILY the best qb on the field for the G-Day game last year. And Aaron Murray was redshirted in part due to tendenitis in his throwing arm, he couldn’t throw for 5 weeks. That kinda slowed down his development. C’mon people, if you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t say anything at all. It really is best that way.

If you run this state, why does FLA always play in the GEORGIA dome in DEC? We run this state is just a stupid comment. Why would a program like UGA be happy with that as their slogan for success. Bama and FLA get any state of georgia recruit it wants. TN, Auburn and TECH get some of the state of georgia talent it wants. So, again, what do you really run?
