Georgia coach Mark Fox apparently took the long way home from the SEC tournament -– by way of Los Angeles.
At 3:53 a.m. EDT Sunday, I received an e-mail from a Georgia fan reporting a Fox spotting at Los Angeles International Airport.
Wrote Matt Little, a UGA alumnus and senior vice president of an insurance brokerage firm in Birmingham:
. . . I’m in the Los Angeles airport right now. It is 11:45 PM Pacific Time and I saw Mark Fox at the Delta gate waiting in line on the red-eye to Atlanta. I introduced myself (I happen to have a UGA t-shirt on). He said he was on stand by trying to get on the flight. He was visibly tired. I asked if he was recruiting and he said he was.
I just thought it might make a good story. The guy just finished the season basically 24 hours ago in Nashville and already flew to California to recruit and is now flying back home. Pretty dedicated if you asked me. As I am typing, Mark just walked on the plane, so he made it . . . .
Aren’t modern communications great?
Fox didn’t say who he was recruiting; that would violate NCAA rules. But if you want to hazard a guess, the Los Angeles Times reported that 6-foot-7 forward Dwayne Polee Jr., who made an official visit to Georgia last month, scored 22 points Saturday night as his Westchester team beat Long Beach Poly 67-53 in a Southern California Division I regional semifinal game. An earlier story in the Times said Polee, a crowd favorite for his dunks since his freshman season, “has matured and blossomed into a bona fide major college prospect.”
———————————–
Georgia sophomore forward Trey Thompkins, named to the coaches’ All-SEC first team last week, received the same honor Monday from the Associated Press.
Joining Thompkins on the AP’s All-SEC first team, chosen by media members: Kentucky’s John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, South Carolina’s Devan Downey and Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado.
Wall, a freshman point guard, was voted the SEC player-of-the-year and John Calipari, in his first season at Kentucky, was voted coach-of-the-year by the AP panel.
———————————-
Also: A sixth UGA coach reached 500 career victories Sunday. Can you name them?

Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver
Oliver was one of only three returning starters on the Georgia defense, and he was considered a potential all-conference performer. The Bulldogs were left scrambling at cornerback after Oliver was declared academically ineligible. He was selected in the fourth round of June’s NFL supplemental draft.

AFDawg, have you and those running your WebPages for you been continuing to edit posts on your WebPages and re-posting them as if they were posted by the person whose name is left on the posts on your WebPages, materially changing the posts to suit only your view of what is to be presented ?
When you get through with all your excuses for that and get through with all your excuses for the 89 arrests / suspensions that we have suffered here at UGA in the Coach Richt Era, what you are left with is in year 10 now of the Coach Richt Era we have a very poor Offensive Coaching Staff still, are getting bad press every day across the nation, are 1-3 vs. Florida the last 4 years, 1-3 vs the vols the last 4 years and 10-10 vs just The SEC East with 14 losses the last 4 years while compiling 21 fumbles a year the last 4 years, 14 interceptions a year the last 4 years, averaging # 96 in the NCAA in penalties against us the last 4 years, have compiled a 3-8 record against the Top 10 Final AP Poll teams we have played in the 9 years of the Coach Richt Era and once again this season have no quarterback ready.
Everyone who is satisfied with that, is not a great Bulldog fan and everyone who is disappointed in the Decline of the UGA Football Program over the last 4 years, including losing to all 5 SEC East Opponents in a Row consecutively is not less a Bulldogs’ Fan.

You shall not censor what is the view of those who hold a different view of the state of this football program over the last 4 years, especially on Offense – as best indicated by the fact that NO ONE in this state of Georgia would join this Offensive Coaching Staff in recruiting. We got none of them in this state of Georgia, and there were a ton of great offensive players in this state.

Bulldawg, you have selected only the most negative slant possible to make your case. Why don’t you try to balance your facts with 90 wins in ten years, seven bowl wins, 2 SEC Championships, 4 SEC East titles, 20 plus players in the NFL, etc. It doesn’t make you less of a Dawg to want a new coach but when you post over and over the list of the negatives (and there are some for sure) you are not being fair and it is not credible evidence. Do you not think there is a similar list of players under Saban and Meyer with acedemic and minor/semi major legal issues. CMR is our coach and I wonder how long you have been following the Dawgs if you think this is the pits, it is not.

2002 George Foster OL raping FL player during game
“I can’t recall someone being raped during that game, odd.”
Where were you ? It was a horrible incident, one of the worst incidents in the history of Georgia – Florida.
Athens Banner Herald Nov. 6, 2002
George Foster confessed Wednesday that he wasn’t provoked into the personal foul that cost Georgia 15 yards and an easy field goal attempt against Florida last week. Foster was whistled for bouncing up and down (humping) on the Gators’ Bam Hardmon after an unsuccessful third down. On the next play, Billy Bennett barely missed a 50-yard field goal.
”To be honest I wasn’t provoked,” Foster said. ”I usually like to really finish a guy off once I get him on the ground. I like to pound him. It was a little much though. Plus, it was right in front of the official.
”You want to dominate your opponent every time you come in contact with them. I just got carried away that time.”
Foster had to run at 5:45 a.m. twice this week as punishment. He also felt a backlash from angry fans.
”It’s past me, it’s past the coaches and I know it’s past my teammates,” he said. ”You kind of wonder about the Georgia fans though. They’re fickle. I don’t think anybody else gets as much flak as we do.”
He said he did get one very supportive e-mail that boosted his spirit.
”I was really surprised to see that because most of the things you get from Georgia fans are negative,” he said.
Note that also is NOT from the AJ-C.
Coach Richt didn’t appreciate it, did he ?
“I don’t remember George Foster leg-humping jumping up and down on the Florida player in the 2002 game costing us a personal foul and giving them one of their 2 field goals they beat us by, when David Greene went 0-13 on 3rd down conversions.”
We got as much bad press from that play as we have any play. Where were you Taylor ?

I’ll leave that to YOU since ALL you want to do is try to tell me I am NOT a Bulldog fan or not as good a one as you, because I dare to want MORE than what we have presented, especially on offense the last 4 years.
How about 14 losses the last 4 years, when we fired Jim Donnan for having 13 losses his last 4 years here.
I don’t want a new Coach G.D. it. Keep up. I want the entire Offensive Coaching Staff FIRED instantaneously. I am fed up with the posters to this blog saying I cannot want MORE than what we have provided the last 4 years.
FU.
I am the other opinion that we must spend $750,000 on Defensive Coordinator with 11 years NFL experience and more than that on his assistants and have on the Offensive side of the staff, NOTHING.
As for if there is a team with MORE NEGATIVE PRESS across the nation, not AJ-C, than UGA gets, name the team.
What about the post by west coast dawg last night ?

Then, Altamaha Dawg claims that some other poster, not I, cannot name 14 suspended or something like that.
Pretty easy stuff.
With RED DOG 77 and Altamaha Dawg claiming to be BETTER DAWG FANS than I because they are satisfied.
My point remains that we are NOT a very good football team and have not been most because of the offense the last 4 years.

Go where you gotta go to get the talent. The kind of talent that would consider the DAWGS will be players that are comfortable with a bit of a risk, since the UGA basketball program has not exactly been consistently in the NC hunt. Players that are a bit on the creative side and want the opportunity to start or play a lot from the get go. Those kinds of players may be all over the place.

And for all who praise Fox – he deserves it so far. I thought UGA looked super well coached. They pass the ball around and run offensive plays with a lot of thought and effectiveness. STILL, it is only going to pay dividends if UGA can recruit better. Fox will not be around for very long if UGA fails to recruit well. They won’t be a tourney team next year unless new faces contribute signinficantly next year. Lalanne and Robinson, Jr. might be key, but one more scorer needs to be found. If UGA looks like a tourney team at the start of next season, they will probably have the momentum needed to sign some top tier talent in Georgia high schools and the surrounding region.
