Mark Fox spotted in Los Angeles on day after SEC tourney loss

Georgia coach Mark Fox apparently took the long way home from the SEC tournament -– by way of Los Angeles.

At 3:53 a.m. EDT Sunday, I received an e-mail from a Georgia fan reporting a Fox spotting at Los Angeles International Airport.

Wrote Matt Little, a UGA alumnus and senior vice president of an insurance brokerage firm in Birmingham:

. . . I’m in the Los Angeles airport right now. It is 11:45 PM Pacific Time and I saw Mark Fox at the Delta gate waiting in line on the red-eye to Atlanta. I introduced myself (I happen to have a UGA t-shirt on). He said he was on stand by trying to get on the flight. He was visibly tired. I asked if he was recruiting and he said he was.

I just thought it might make a good story. The guy just finished the season basically 24 hours ago in Nashville and already flew to California to recruit and is now flying back home. Pretty dedicated if you asked me. As I am typing, Mark just walked on the plane, so he made it . . . .

Aren’t modern communications great?

Fox didn’t say who he was recruiting; that would violate NCAA rules. But if you want to hazard a guess, the Los Angeles Times reported that 6-foot-7 forward Dwayne Polee Jr., who made an official visit to Georgia last month, scored 22 points Saturday night as his Westchester team beat Long Beach Poly 67-53 in a Southern California Division I regional semifinal game. An earlier story in the Times said Polee, a crowd favorite for his dunks since his freshman season, “has matured and blossomed into a bona fide major college prospect.”

———————————–

Georgia sophomore forward Trey Thompkins, named to the coaches’ All-SEC first team last week, received the same honor Monday from the Associated Press.

Joining Thompkins on the AP’s All-SEC first team, chosen by media members: Kentucky’s John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, South Carolina’s Devan Downey and Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado.

Wall, a freshman point guard, was voted the SEC player-of-the-year and John Calipari, in his first season at Kentucky, was voted coach-of-the-year by the AP panel.

———————————-

Also: A sixth UGA coach reached 500 career victories Sunday. Can you name them?

Dawghater, why are you on the board for our low-bar setting basketball team? Go back to the nerd herd, where the bar is soooo very high. It’ll be sweet seeing you guys lose in the first round of the NCAA’s with three McDonald’s All-Americans on the team!

I guess the reason that we Dawgs are so impressed with Coach Fox is that he took a team with virtually no talent to darn near a .500 record. To appreciate that I guess you have to understand how little was left in the program after Felton’s departure. I think with the exception of maybe one or two games Georgia played well every time it took the floor this season and even beat much more talented squads from Tech, Vandy, Illinois, and Tennessee. Oh I don’t know . . . but me thinks if Fox can do what he did this season without much talent . . . then perhaps he might really be a force to reckoned with if he can recruit some exceptional players. Yes he’s got a lot to overcome in attracting top players to Athens, but this man . . .unlike the last man . . . can really coach. And unlike the man before that, I think he’ll do it the right way!

Dawghater – trust me, if all we had was a win over the pitiful, over-hyped GT team playing in the pitiful, over-hyped ACC, we wouldn’t be as excited.

6′7 Dwayne Polee is a skinny beast. He jumps higher than Lebron (with his head up over the rim – check his many highlight reels on YouTube). There will be a lot of teams recruiting him. If CMF can land this young man, the dawgs are in the dance next season. “Mark” it down!!

Do something, then you can come to talk. All this smack flying around with these redneck UGAY fans only confirms the fact that no one can respect any of these programs.

Getting beat by a bunch of candyass nerds should make you pack your program and call it a day….by the way, let’s throw in LSU, OSU, KY, UT, (total humiliation) FL (again total humiliation).

What UGAY has proved is that this program cannot open on the road against a D-1 team. They always have to open at home against Agnes Scott, or Georgia Perimeter College, which is the reason UGAY will never get any respect.

Your AD is configuring a schedule that makes them look good and does not have any guts.

You UGAY fans can shoot your mouths off all day long, but when the smoke clears, your football, baseball and basketball programs are the laughing stock of college sports, and a total embarassment to the state of Georgia.

You’re not telling that on November 28, 2009 at “THE JOKE BY COKE” aka “THE LITTLE HOUSE”, that the jackets went down to the dogs yet again 30-24, even after Tech being called a 14 point favorite…You got to get over that, dude, and might I recommend a week of 8am and 8pm luke warm enemals to try to clean out that leftover residue from the Georgia loss….Pugnacious Paul got to chunkin’ it down the field and lost the game when he could have run the triple option down the field, run out the clock, and won the game….Ole BAYBAY did a dropsy, and that was that….ON THE TOPIC OF MIKE BOBO, I DO REMEMBER HIM THROWING A LAST PLAY TD PASS IN THAT LEFT HAND CORNER OF THE NORTH END ZONE AGAINST THE YELLOW JACKETS TO PIN YET ANOTHER LOSS ON THE GREEN (IT AIN’T GOLD) AND WHITE JACKETTES…My man Bobo has put some points up against you guys—30, 40 plus, so leave him alone or he might hang 50 this year between the hedges…..

Look GT fans no one cares that you backed into the NCAA tourney by beating NCSt…wow that was one of worst basketball games I ever watched. Then the to get spanked by Duke again…..a 10 seed is not exactly a ringing endorsement of a program with what 3 McD’s AA….

Yea and our home schedule includes the follwoing: South Carolina State (really, that is a college), then on to NC State, Virginia and then the mighty Middle Tennessee State Tigers, then Miami (don’t know how they slipped in there) and finally Duke. Now there is a D1 home schedule for you. You Dawgs don’t play anybody tough like we do.

There, now will you all STFU. And I am a Georgia fan. I think Fox realizes how good this job can be. The athletic department has decided to get behind the basketball program, and has shown that by building a practice facility second to none. Spending a few million to update the Steg’s appearance also. UGA is located in the Classic City, one of the great college towns in this country. The university is the flagship for the state. Abundance of talent within 90 minutes of the school. Fox is primed to begin landing some of the state’s best talent (which means some of the nation’s best) in the 2011 class. Check out who we sign in November.

That is why in an earlier post, I mentioned annual invites to the dance. Its going to be a fun ride, so buckle up Dog fans.

If not asking too much, those disagreeing deal with the points raised, rather than resorting to ad hominem attacks.
