Fox: No further postseason play; will meet soon with Thompkins

If you’re wondering:

  • You can close the book on Georgia’s men’s basketball season.

The talk about possibly playing in a third-tier postseason tournament such as the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) or CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT)?  Mark Fox doesn’t see that happening.

“This is it,”  he said a half hour or so after last night’s loss to Vanderbilt knocked his team out of the SEC tournament.

He had said earlier in the week that depending on how Georgia played in the SEC tournament, he might look into the possibility of a CBI or CIT berth. But the Dogs went 1-1 in the SEC tourney to finish the season 14-17.

“We’re not going to get an invitation somewhere to play,” Fox said, “and we don’t have a winning record. I think we’re done.”

  • Fox said he’ll be meeting soon with Trey Thompkins to discuss the sophomore forward’s thinking on whether to enter the NBA draft or remain at UGA.

“Trey is a very, very good basketball player, and I think he could get even better. I really do,” Fox said. “We’ll sit down, he and his family, and discuss what his future will be. Trey will make the best decision for Trey. Because this is his life.”

As for the other Georgia player projected as a future NBA first-round pick,  Travis Leslie: Fox noted that Leslie “has already said he’ll be back” and added that it’s important that Leslie “approach the off-season the right way.”

  • Please click here for the final version of my game story from last night’s late loss to Vanderbilt.

FOOTBALL

NCAA MAJOR INFRACTIONS

3 Alabama NCAA Major Infractions Database PROBATION in Football.

2 UGA NCAA Major Infractions Database PROBATION in Football

Alabama is the ONLY SEC school on PROBATION in football at this time, serving THREE (3) YEARS PROBATION starting June 11, 2009 NCAA Major Infractions Database.

Alabama has had 3 PROBATION in football since The SEC current alignment in 1990, with 3 Major Infractions Database PROBATION football.

In fact, since the realignment in 1990, NO SEC SCHOOL HAS MORE MAJOR INFRACTIONS Database PROBATIONS than Alabama in all sports.

Not even Auburn.

One school’s football team won their conference and played in a BCS bowl. The other school’s team played in Shreveport.

One school’s basketball team made the NCAA field. The other’s didn’t make the NIT.

Two games don’t make up for that. Not even close.

All I see above is talking about football you all, I love football like the rest of you all, and I go to all the games even to Hawaii Bowl in 2000. However, you all need to know, this was a basketball acticle, and your mind set is on one thing (football) except one small thing by Whopper Dawg. I hate to say this, I am a little upset with the overall UGA fan base essecially understanding and supporting basketball and sometimes for baseball. UGA FANS, there are other sports at UGA then just Football. Basketball team needs your support and eventhough the program has not been recruiting well, I believe they have an excellent coach now that will get everything from the team and players he is almost similiar to Tubby Smith. He will need a little time to turn things around to be a NCAA top tier; however, they need support by all UGA Fans to be there to keep top recruits in this state. That is what I hear from other team recruiting who recruit players in Georgia that UGA fan base hurts the program and there decision in going there. I hope that changes; however, I was at a few SEC touranment here many times (Atlanta) and other places where I surround by Kentucky and Mississsippi State fans eventhough I get my tickets from UGA ticket office. That does not help!!!Same thing last year in baseball at Birmingham, we were winning; however, we had less fans then other schools there. I was sitting in the UGA section; however except for our row, everywhere else was LSU and Vanderbilt for baseball. No UGA fan support does not help recruiting in your sport, so PLEASE UGA FANS support your teams!!!! I know from the Alumni side, we have some 100,000 UGA Alumni in this state and nearby to support all these teams.

You fellas grow the heck up. Unbelievable.

My hat is off to Fox and the rest of the boys for scrapping all year long. With a Thompkins return, the continued maturation of Leslie and the addition of a more physical point guard next year, UGA WILL make the tourney.

Watch for Leslie to move to the 2 guard next year and wreak havoc.

Until then, I’m one of a few UGA fans who will be rooting for Tech to show something in the tournament. Tech AND UGA need to keep our best basketball talent from leaving the state. There is certainly enough to go around. If UGA gets the talent, there’s no doubt which of the two coaches (Fox and Hewitt) is more capable of coaching it.

This is Basketball Season. You UGA football fans are pathetic. You have hired one of the best basketball coaches in the country, he can build a basketball program at UGA that can put the football program to shame, yet all you talk about is football. If you UGA grads will get your butts in the seats at Stegeman, support this coach, you will have something special.

Great high school players are not going to UGA and play in front of a high school size crowd. Right now UGA basketball does not matter to anyone but Mark Fox and his players. If you want a program like UK, or NC or Duke or UConn you must put your butts in the seats. Sell out EVERY game.

You UGA grads know what to do. Will you do it?

All the cry-babying that goes on with these blogs is unbelievable. This is a basketball blog, who cares about who beat who in football. This is a GEORGIA basketball blog. What we should be talking about is how well Travis Leslie played last night. If he works on his game in the offseason, learns to handle the ball, and can develop a jump shot, then this kid can have a very bright future as a shooting guard in the NBA. And the UGA basketball team could be very good next year if Thompkins decides to return. They will have some talented guys returning in Price and Barnes, and I think the kid out of Suwanee can be a player too with a little more work. I am definitely looking forward to watching Leslie continue to develop. He is the most athletic player in the SEC and he will only get better.

Travis and Trey have made UGA proud, and I am happy that Travis will return for another season. I hope we are lucky enough to see Trey wearing the Red and Black another year because both young men are very special! I would love to see them come back and help UGA win and SEC championship and I think they can help make that happen! Let’s make some history for UGA basketball Guys!! BuLLdawg….I generally ignore your stupidity, but for some reason Chaney caught my attention as i scrolled by. This inclusion shows why it is best to just hit fast forward when coming to your posts…

“02 05 2005 Jamar Chaney LB someone took SAT for him kicked out”

That’s not exactly what happened…1, he wasn’t kicked out, he wasn’t admitted. 2, he was already cleared by the NCAA by virtue of his ACT score. The SAT was only being taken to gain admittance to a specific program at UGA, and UGA (and UGA alone) was concerned about the score and pushed for him to retake the exam. He declined (depending on your viewpoint, understandable) and was denied admittance. Richt called Croom in Starkville and subsequently he then signed with MSU and the issue vanished.

First, BullDawg you’re an idiot, period. Second, this blog page shows how anyone connected with Tech has no life as the geeks they are, go back to your own damn blog page and whine with each other like you usually do when things don’t go your way. Thirdly, UGA basketball has only been relevant twice in my lifetime: Dominique’s era and the much too short Tubby era. The problem with Fox is that he will turn the program around, like Tubby, and then a program with a lot of history that is down will come calling and he’ll leave for the opportunity to do it again with the likes of an Indiana, St. John’s or Arizona. Finally, the reason football rules the blog, even at this time, is that we only pay attention to the other sports to fill a bit of our time, but we know what is always in the back of our mind—-Get the picture, Georgia won the toss and defers to the 2nd half…..Walsh kicks it thru the end zone and we’ll get our first look at the new Dawg defense…………..September will be here before we know it, Thank God!!!

I’m gonna let you ponder that question a bit. It wins for me every time…period. What number do you never see on any Tech uniform, no matter what the sport. Tech retired the number from their entire sports program. Pups seem to always have one of their’s wearing it.
