Some notes and numbers this morning:
– Georgia’s recent road record in men’s basketball might be even worse than you think. Yes, Saturday’s loss at LSU dropped the Dogs to 0-11 in opponents’ arenas for this season. But that merely continues a mind-boggling seven-year stretch of futility on the road. The Dogs are now 2-28 on the road over the past three seasons and a mind-boggling 8-63 over the past seven seasons. In five of the seven seasons, Georgia has won one road game or none. Horrific.
– Fascinating quote in a story by David Hale the other day on Georgia’s Caleb King-Washaun Ealey tailback tandem: “We’ve talked about it,” King said, “and we’re both pushing for 1,000 [yards rushing] apiece. I think we can do it.” That sent me to the record book. Georgia has never had two 1,000-yard rushers in the same season, of course, and has had only 10 seasons with one 1,000-yard rusher -– half of those seasons accounted for by Herschel Walker (1980-81-82) and Knowshon Moreno (2007-2008). But Hale pointed out that if Ealey and King maintain last season’s averages per carry (5.7 and 5.2 yards, respectively) and get an average of 15 carries per game for 13 games, they’d finish the season with 1,014 yards (King) and 1,111 yards (Ealey). Hey, that’s more fun to ponder than the road basketball record, isn’t it?
– Speaking of numbers, you’ve probably already noticed that the tailback tandem now wears consecutive numbers -– Ealey switching to No. 3 and King remaining No. 4.
– Sporting News’ latest NFL mock draft has former UGA defensive tackle Jeff Owens going in the first round — No. 31 to Indianapolis. That’s higher than other projections I’ve seen.
– For a team with a bottom seed, Georgia’s position is actually pretty good in this week’s SEC basketball tournament in Nashville. The Dogs’ opener is against a team on a five-game losing streak. (Arkansas.) And if Georgia gets past that game, its next opponent will be a team the Dogs beat in Athens and led by five points with 33 seconds left in regulation on the road before losing in overtime. (Vanderbilt).
– If you missed it, a teammate “definitely” thinks Trey Thompkins will be back at UGA next season.
– More from Nashville later today.

What? 2 – 1000 yard rushers in the same season. Do they plan on playing for GT? ‘Cause it’s not happening at UGa. It will happen but the players will be wearing white and gold not red and black. Good luck trying though, I’ll be pulling for them – that is until they reach that game in late November.

Max, I’ve tried to say that a few times and get accused of whining. We shoulda been deeper, we shoulda been more experienced, but the reality is we just haven’t had a consistant O-line in a while, and playcalling and the results have suffered. That’s just a fact. Fix that or nothing else matters.
FWIW UGA ran the ball 56% of the time last year compared to Bama and FL 61% of the time. Aside from that not being a huge difference in “trying to use the run”, THEY had very solid lines and Heisman trophy winners in the backfield. We had neither. I’d be willing to bet that this season with (hopefully) a solid line and at least some All-SEC caliber backs we will run the ball over 60% of the time too.

altama, from the outside of the program looking in, I have questioned your recruiting coordinator to let the Dline, Oline and lack of depth at QB happen. Someone should of played one of the QB’s last year unless they were just not ready.

Altamaha dog,
Interesting stat on Georgia running the ball 56% of the time compared to 61% for both Bama and UF. Plus UGA tends to run a lot of screen passes which are essentially almost a running play since they are low risk, you’re not throwing down the field, etc. Throw in all the screens Georgia runs and they would probably be identical to Bama and UF as far as running the ball.

Blue Max its hard to say we didn’t have depth at QB Joe had been there four years and knew the offense inside and out, and when given time could hit targets. Who knew he was so scared of getting hit. That was Cox’s biggest problem, if the line broke down and heat came, he would freak out, throw the ball up for grabs or fumble. As for line both O and D we had/have them scheme on D and injuries on O hurt us alot

Glad King and Ealey are setting lofty goals. It’s not gonna happen. There will be games where one player will be injured or where one guy is playing so well that the other guy won’t get many carries. Not to mention that at least a couple teams will shut down the run and force the Dawgs to throw it.

Observor, because both teams are in disarray with their coaching staffs. We have significantly improved ours. Fla is losing one of the best players to ever play college football, and can’t replace him. Georgia can beat Florida, and owe TN an arse beatin. It can be done this year, and if they do it, they’ll play for the SEC. Write it down!

I love the high level of SUPPORT from some of these so-called Dawg fans.
Some of you make me sick.
If it’s not a complaint about one thing, it’s surely negative comments about something else.
I truly believe some of you are absolutely scared to death to get behind this team for FEAR that you will be disappointed.
It’s like many of you EXPECT this team to fail. You want them to fall flat on their face so you can sit at the bar and tell everybody within earshot that you “told them so.”
“The backs can’t block.” “Coach Richt is an idiot” “Bobo won’t call the right plays” “Murray is too injury prone.” “The defensive players will struggle with the new system.” W-T-F?
This football program has enjoyed more success since Richt took over than at any time since the 80’s.
But it’s not good enough that the program is headed in the right direction. You want to point out the failures the last couple years and believe that it will stay that way. We are not moving fast enough for some and not moving at all for others. But instead of getting behind the team and encouraging them, some of you just want to tear them down.
The players, coaches, strategy, scheme,… everything.
If you are one of those, like me, who contribute considerable chunks of their income each year to this program…you expect the team to win, period. So do I.
But getting to the top is difficult.
Florida and Alabama, and to some extent LSU, have just started to realize high-level success recently… and only after long periods of rebuilding and a lot of work. Not to mention a little luck.
Some seem to think that all our problems can be addressed by firing Bobo. Or Richt. That’s it…let’s just start over. Let’s see…who can we get in here to turn this program around?
Whoever he is he better be able to improve on that sorry-ass 90 wins in 9 years thing…and oh yeah, gotta win the SEC almost every year and you better be in the conversation about the BCS NC at least every other year…because you know, Urban and Nick doing it.
Even though their chances of continuing that level of success are pretty slim, I give them their props for what they have done to this point. And I personally believe our time is quickly approaching. It will soon again be our turn to rule the league for a while.
If you don’t want to support this team unconditionally, then don’t. If you don’t think you are getting your moneys worth, quit writing those checks. Take that sticker off your car and find another team to root for.
But, don’t come back on here and woof it up when we start winning again. And we will start winning again, make no mistake about that.
The bandwagon is for passionate dawg backers, not dog kickers.

If ever there were two at UGA that could do it, those two could do it. The offensive line will be absolutely incredible. Two deep with players and subs with game experience. Potentially 3 All SEC performers on the line. And then there is Trenton Sturdivant coming back. Wow. Who said we need a QB that needs to do more than just hand off the ball? Play action passing will be icing on the cake.

Yellow Fuzz: Why do you continue to bring back two years ago? Let’s talk about 9 of the last 10. What did the guy say? “We own this state.” Even when we had a down year we still won our bowl game and kicked the bees at Bobby Dodd. What did the techies do in the bowl? How many straight bowl losses do you now have?

Gratefuldawghead: I hate to say it but the ‘88 team was a team reflecting (I am sad to say) one of the many times Vince Dooley wasted a NC caliber team. How many NFL stars came off that team? Unbelievable. In my opinion the wasted talent teams were: ‘68, ‘71, ‘75,’76, ‘78,’81,’82 and ‘88. Possibly ‘74. In ‘81 Dooley was out coached at Clemson and in the bowl game.
Yes, I know that they played for the NC in both ‘76 and ‘82 but Dooley was clearly out coached in both games.

2 – 1000 yd rushers at UGA? Not likely. King was and is vastly overrated as a runner. Ealey might get 1000 yds if he gets enough carries and consistently has breakaways.

in order to run the football down their throats and have RBs that are hard hitting, we must first find a RB who hits hard and not like a girl and fumble like caleb king does…. caleb king had 4 fumbles last year and would not pass block.
ealey is the best RB we have but he is only good in the open fiels and is not a north south runner

I’m realistic in knowing the Junkyard D and Runningback U will take time to reload. Hence, that is why I said “I’m liking the direction”. If we can get some good results early next season, it will just start rolling for the rest of the season, and for season’s to come. It will help us start recruiting those, big, bad, bruising running backs(Tim Worley type). Run the ball 60-70%…dump to Charles, and some strikes to AJ etc.. Long, time consuming drives, and a hard smacking Junkyard D.

Tide fan, you make a really good point. If you didn’t count the times Tebow pitched the ball to a trailing back, which isnt much different than a screen pass, Fl probably didn’t attempt any more runs that Georgia did last season. Odd that you know our offense better than some Dawgs fans that post in here.
Now Alabama flat out ran the ball. I’d say a couple trophies on the shelf is proof that they had a tad more going on in that area than simply if thier OC knew “football for dummies”. Helps to have the horses.
It’s not the lack of commitment to the running game by our staff, its the lack of commitment FROM our running game to our staff.

When college kids believe they can win, all bets are off. UGA, has a very talented roster, with a few wins out of the gate, there is no telling. GO DOGS !!!GATA!!!
