Some notes and numbers this morning:
– Georgia’s recent road record in men’s basketball might be even worse than you think. Yes, Saturday’s loss at LSU dropped the Dogs to 0-11 in opponents’ arenas for this season. But that merely continues a mind-boggling seven-year stretch of futility on the road. The Dogs are now 2-28 on the road over the past three seasons and a mind-boggling 8-63 over the past seven seasons. In five of the seven seasons, Georgia has won one road game or none. Horrific.
– Fascinating quote in a story by David Hale the other day on Georgia’s Caleb King-Washaun Ealey tailback tandem: “We’ve talked about it,” King said, “and we’re both pushing for 1,000 [yards rushing] apiece. I think we can do it.” That sent me to the record book. Georgia has never had two 1,000-yard rushers in the same season, of course, and has had only 10 seasons with one 1,000-yard rusher -– half of those seasons accounted for by Herschel Walker (1980-81-82) and Knowshon Moreno (2007-2008). But Hale pointed out that if Ealey and King maintain last season’s averages per carry (5.7 and 5.2 yards, respectively) and get an average of 15 carries per game for 13 games, they’d finish the season with 1,014 yards (King) and 1,111 yards (Ealey). Hey, that’s more fun to ponder than the road basketball record, isn’t it?
– Speaking of numbers, you’ve probably already noticed that the tailback tandem now wears consecutive numbers -– Ealey switching to No. 3 and King remaining No. 4.
– Sporting News’ latest NFL mock draft has former UGA defensive tackle Jeff Owens going in the first round — No. 31 to Indianapolis. That’s higher than other projections I’ve seen.
– For a team with a bottom seed, Georgia’s position is actually pretty good in this week’s SEC basketball tournament in Nashville. The Dogs’ opener is against a team on a five-game losing streak. (Arkansas.) And if Georgia gets past that game, its next opponent will be a team the Dogs beat in Athens and led by five points with 33 seconds left in regulation on the road before losing in overtime. (Vanderbilt).
– If you missed it, a teammate “definitely” thinks Trey Thompkins will be back at UGA next season.
– More from Nashville later today.

Realist,
No argument from this UGA fan. However, I do think Ealey will come into his own this season. The dude is a touchdown scoring machine. King has alot of talent but is inconsistent.

cantondawg….I hope we are better on D. I think we have the ability to be but it will all depend on how the starters acccept their role after being just rotation guys. Lots of talent there.
I disargee about Richardson taking the starting job. I think Richardson is great no doubt but Ingram is just as good. I think you will see TR get more carries this year as he proved he deserves them.
I am not sure what it is about King I am not sold on but he doesnt seem to have that enthusiasm that I am used to with Knowshon. He is talented but seems he has not completely bought in. Maybe that will change this year.

Diehard dog fan all the way but 2 1000 yard rushers is a pipe dream. Has anyone who isn’t antiquated and run the option had 2 1000 yard rushers in a season. Maybe Cadillac and Ronnie Brown. I know Nevada had 3 1000 yard rushers last year but cmon, Nevada doesn’t count do they?

If Ealey shines in that #3 jersey, Oh how the DAWG fans will forget B. Evans, if not that jersey might have the curse at UGA forever…..Jeff Owens a first round pick? After his sophmore year I’m with you, but now? Not!…..UGA Coach Mark Fox has got to sell not only that he can coach,(which he really can) but he’s gonna have to sell the program as something more than an after thought of the football season! Also before we give all the carries to Washaun, and Caleb, Mike Bobo needs to find some space in there for Carlton Thomas with swing passes out the Backfield, or something, this kid is to fast and to elusive not to be getting PT regurlarly!

Hell, i’ll take one 1,000 yard rusher. We were a 10 win team when KM ran for 1,000 yards. We will have a HUGELY inexperienced or a NO experienced qb next year. We better run the ball or we will be lucky to be .500

I don’t care how many yards Ealey or King get just so long as we win more games than last year. And Jeff Owens is no 1st rounder I’ll tell you that. He wasn’t even all-SEC caliber last year.

Hell, someone that has enough time go back since 1980 and see what our record was when we had a 1,000 yard rusher. We all know how we did from 80-82 with a 1,000 yard rusher. Did Hearst rush for 1,000?? Musa Smith I believe rushed for 1,000 and we all know Knowshon did it.
The point i’m trying to make is instead of trying to get 2 1,000 yard rushers why don’t we try and get 1 1,000 yard rusher. Just my opinion.

Ealey is very good, and I believe he may give the Gators trouble in JAX this year if our defense is not properly prepared.
By the way, what happened to Tony Barnhart? I hope he is well. It would be great for him to start chiming in on Spring Practice and the 2010 Season.

All you kids talking about other schools, just remember that Terrell Davis sat behind Garrison Hearst at Georgia and was a SBMVP, And Brown, Lumpkin, and Ware who split time amongst each other while Knowshon was behind them are all in the NFL. Now do you wanna go play tailback somewhere else?

Paul Dawg,
I would be surprised if Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown didn’t accomplish the feat at Auburn. Then again one or both of them seemed to constantly be injured or banged up so then again maybe they didn’t do it. On top of that they may have played when we only had the 11 game season as opposed to 12 game regular season.

I am not nearly as concerned about the 1000 yrd season as I am about being able to pick up 2 or 3 yrds rushing the football when we absolutely have to do it. THAT, or the lack of, is why we have not been a very good football team lately. All the rest is just chatter.

Ealey proved to be BOTH more PRODUCTIVE (5.7 ypc vs. 5.2 ypc) and better at protecting the football (half as few fumbles as King).
Ealey ran for 8100 yards and 133 td’s in high school, breaking Herschel Walker’s r4ecords and was a Parade All-American.
He is beating Moreno and Walker’s ypc average at UGA.
Ealey will get better with more reps.
I’d like to see 40 runs, 20 to Ealey, 15 to King, 5 to Brandon Smith (12.2 ypc) and Wooten (7 ypc).
Ealey earned the right to get 20 touches or to be the #1 rb.
King fumbles too much and only averaged 1 ypc vs. LSU, where Ealey averaged over 4 ypc against Fla and LSU.

To the critic of Andy Landers: Andy is a victim of his own success when Dog fans are upset over a 23-8 record. Would I have liked to have seen more wins, of course, but most SEC teams would be thrilled with that record. For those not aware, under Landers this is one of the top 5 women’s programs in the country over last 30 years, second only to Tennessee in the SEC. What has kept Andy from being more highly acclaimed is the lack of national titles. For whatever reason, the Lady Dogs have basically blown two NCs. 1985 had Old Dominion beaten, but let them off the mat. 1996, had hammered the Lady Vols twice, but in the third go round, came up short in title game. After Michael Shafer left, recruiting fell off, but the Lady Dogs have had banner back to back classes, and should be improved next year.

Two 1,000 yard rushers with Bobo running the offense? Don’t make me laugh. Bobo will hand over the reigns to our freshmen QB and let him audible in to pass plays on 3rd and short. Bobo will pass the ball to set up the run, instead of the other way around like you are taught in “Football For Dummies.” Bobo does not have patience for an offense that would produce two 1000 yard rushers. Bobo thinks you only win games if the QB wins them for you. Bobo thinks he coaches in the NFL and that Peyton Manning is his QB. Bobo obviously never watches Bama or Florida games, both of whom have won national championships with QBs who manage the game more than they sling the ball around the field like its freaking flag football or something. Stafford and Moreno made Bobo look a lot better than he really is. We will never have two 1000 yard rushers with Bobo calling the shots. What we’ll have are QBs that pass for a lot of yards, throw a lot of interceptions, and never win championships. That’s what we’ll have. True story folks.

dawgfan, I hear what you are saying and last year was a example of that. I think part of the problem was the running game never did much the first half of the season. If you look at the SC game, the Ark. game, it became a throwing fest. Establishing the run is key to the play action pass and a good running team usually owns the clock. Hopefully with CMW getting more involved with the O he will keep Bobo on a short leash.

run the ball,
I don’t think Georgia has ever beaten UT and UF in the same year. They certainly haven’t done it since Richt became coach and I don’t think they’ve done it since the inception of the 2 division format. As a matter of fact you may have to go back to 1980 as the last time the dogs did that. Given this dubious history what makes you think they can do it this year with a team that went 8-5 last year? And even if they could beat both let alone one of the 2 what does it matter? Do you honestly think they could beat both UT and UF and then beat Alabama? Even the most realistic dog fan knows we can’t beat Bama this year.

Thanks athensdawg. It amazing to me how very few folks ever talk about the main thing that has hurt UGA over the past couple of years. Rather go on and on about stuff that don’t matter. Same crappy coverage, same KO issues, same fumbles, same whatever………and just be able to pick up a 3rd and 2, we win 4 more games.
We needed 2 yards and you never felt like we could. Folks want to complain about the “call” and sometimes you did have to wonder, but one thing for sure we certainly couldn’t line it up and just get it. Florida needed 2 yards and you never felt like you could stop it, even when they pointed to the exact spot they were coming. Now Tebow is a fine fellow and all, but come on, he is literally falling forward for the first down. His height and weight are not magic spells. He is just a big ol boy leaning forward at that point.
Why? or why not in our case?. Seems pretty obvious to me. And it shouldn’t matter who carried the ball. Or who called the play.

dawgfan, you cannot seriously suggest that Coach Mike Bobo is employed as an OC at a major conference school and does not understand the value of a strong running game. And makes up ways to pass the ball just to be a lot more complicated than the easiest way to win the game and keep his job and everybody around him in high cotton. Seriously?
Did you really think that in the game where we did have some success running the ball , we didn’t ride that as long as possible? And in those games where we punted 7 straight times before finally going to the air, it was because he is in love with the passing game?
The difference between his gameplan and the (all hail) Alabama and Florida gameplan is that they actually CAN run the ball. We can about a third of the time.
I will guarantee you that IF, the line is what is suppossed to be, he will run the ball plenty this season.

Bobo runs a pro-style play action offense. He obviously know the run sets up the passing game. That’s the very basis for what they do. It’s the definition of what they do.
Just not doing it very well lately. And it IS his job to do it well, so I am not defending his results, just rejecting the notion he wouldn’t run the ball 60 times and win every game if that were an option.
