UGA QB Mettenberger arrested in South Georgia (UPDATED)

Zach Mettenberger, a candidate to be the University of Georgia’s starting quarterback in the fall, was arrested on five misdemeanor charges over the weekend in the South Georgia town of Remerton.

Mettenberger, 18, was charged with underage consumption/possession of alcohol, disorderly conduct, obstruction and two counts of possessing fake identification, Remerton Police Chief Mike Terrell told the AJC.

The police report, obtained by the AJC, does not provide details about the circumstances surrounding Mettenberger’s arrest at 1:39 a.m. Sunday at the Flip Flops bar in Remerton, which is near Valdosta.

“I don’t have much available right now,” Terrell said in an e-mail. “We are still investigating the circumstances that led to his arrest.”

Mettenberger was transported to the Lowndes County Jail, according to the police report. He later was released on bond. He has a court date scheduled for April 27.

Under UGA Athletic Association policy, a conviction on an alcohol-related charge would mean a mandatory suspension of at least one game. Georgia’s season opener is Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Mettenberger, from Oconee County, is one of three contenders for Georgia’s starting quarterback job. Rated the No. 11 quarterback prospect in the nation by Rivals.com in 2008, Mettenberger was redshirted as a UGA freshman last season and began spring practice last week in competition with Aaron Murray and Logan Gray to succeed the graduated Joe Cox as the starter.

The arrest came early in UGA’s spring break, which runs through this week.  The football team is not scheduled to resume practice until March 16.

A UGA spokesman said coach Mark Richt was aware of Mettenberger’s situation and will be getting more information on the matter. Richt is out of town and would have no immediate comment, the spokesman said.

This is actually a good thing. Murray was going to be the guy anyway. Zack would have ended up #3 so it’s no big deal. What a major crime too huh? A college kid drinking? Wow. It is time for Richt and all college coaches to put their foot down – set the example – suspend Mettenberger from the team AND his scholarship for one full season, set goals and expectations for him to achieve both academically, socially, and community service hours – if he meets what is laid out in front of him he is provided an opportunity to earn back his scholarship and membership to the team. Let’s see that he is made of. The tone and expectations must be set for all to see the consequence of their actions and choices.

It’s not the underage consumption/possession of alcohol and fake ID charges I would be concerned with; college students have been engaged in those types of activities since God was a boy. That is the issue that should ultimately determine if Mettenberger is given a second chance.

I hate the 21 yr old drinking age. All it does is make Criminals out of College Students. The drinking age should be rolled back to 19, the age of most college freshmen. Otherwise students will continue to learn that the Guvment makes idiotic laws and it is OK to break the ones you don’t like. Too bad for Mett.

Remerton is a JOKE about this sort of thing. Flip Flops is not a seedy bar, and the City of Remerton makes their revenue off of college students- I have had two children arrested there, and they are good kids.

Defending National Champs- It’s funny you ask “How many players have been arrested over the past year for the dawgs?”

Unless you count the players that were “arrested” for expired licenses (I believe there were 2), UGA had one player to be arrested in the last year: Montez Robinson. Alabama also had one player arrested in the last year for domestic violence: Courtney Upshaw.

“Glad Saban doesn’t run his program like Richt does his.” That’s also pretty funny. Nick Saban is no stranger to off-the-field incidents. In his first 14 months on the job, 8 football players were arrested.

Remerton is notorious for this kind of stuff. It’s a town inside of a town, bars and college students only. I hate to say it but Mettenberger probably thought he could get away with any thing down there because he is a UGA quarterback. Making a mistake means turning left when you meant to turn right. Carrying a fake ID and buying booze is not a mistake -that is a conscious decision to break the law. Disorderly conduct and obstruction are not mistakes, either. A$$ painting is also not a mistake. The mistake is having no discipline on the team – and as a result abundant unsportmanlike penalties on the field. I wish they would call a penalty on the a$$ painter and the one who held me down while he was painting. Coach Grantham better be as good as advertised because the whole program is in his hands now. He’ll get suspended at least for the first game and there goes any real chance he had to win the QB job. It will be a heavy penance and could signal the end of his career at UGA.

Compare the Dawgs to LSU: The Tigers have not had one incident with a football player since 2008 when Perrilloux was kicked off the team.

This has alot to do with who is leading the program.

Meanwhile, Bradie James, former LSU linebacker and starter for the Cowboys had a fundraiser for breast cancer last Thursday in the Stadium Club section of Tiger Stadium. The cost to attend was $56, his jersey number. Says alot about his charactor and one of many examples of former Tigers who have gone on as Coach K at Duke says to “be good men”.

Alabama fans should crawl back under their rocks. I find it funny how quiet most of you were until the Saban hire, and now you act like you own the world.

News flash, Alabama came as close as any school since SMU of going into a death penalty state. Had the NCAA not realized the death penalty was a big mistake, and had Alabama not been the historical powerhouse that it is, they would have gotten the death penalty.

Any one of you morons on here for Bama or Tech that is calling these kids thugs .. just remember, you were probably doing the same thing prior to being legally able to drink. If you weren’t then feel free to comment from the computer in your apartment .. aka your mothers basement .. mamma’s boy.

I don’t know why folks try to figure out the morality issue here. You did it, I did it, he did it. None of us are thugs. It might as well have been “don’t push this red button”. He knew the consequence, and pushed it anyway. I don’t really even care what lessons he learns or how he grows as a result (because he is not discovering anything he didnt already know). It’s not nearly that complicated in the real world, is it?

And yes, what IS with all the bama fans living in the UGA blogs lately? That would embarass me if my team just won a NC and some other school was this much inside my head.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was hearing from the Dawgs re: the Gary Brown situation at UF all about the arrests and how Urban Meyer promotes thuggery etc etc…. But I’m not going to go bashing here, I’m going to try to be real and say that this is a problem that ALL schools face or potentially face. (By the way, Gary Brown, a highly touted star recruit, is no longer on the Florida team). I think that the only way UF or UGA or Tennessee or Alabama or any other school is going to get a handle on this problem, which is a reflection of our society and our times more than on any individual coach, is to adopt an almost zero tolerance policy toward this situation which is happening more and more. Get ‘em out of there! I see this happening more at UF, they are tired of preaching to these guys and trying to hold their hands. It’s just not worth the bad public image that you have to endure. And it just doesn’t work. Send a stong message to the team, you’d better follow the rules and be a good teammate or be gone.

Dawggirl32,

Sweetie you don’t want to get into an argument with me on players arrested. Saban booted most of the 7 players that were all discipline problems when he arrived in 2007. He doesn’t put up with that crap like Richt does. In each of the last 2 years we’ve had something like 1 player arrested while the dawgs have routinely had 7-8 arrested over single year. Please don’t embarrass yourself by arguing with me over who has had more arrests over any time frame. Its the only contest Georgia not only beats us in but whips us soundly. As for Courtney Upshaw his arrest for domestic violence charge was dropped. His girlfriend saw him talking to another girl and slapped the fool out of him. He held her down to keep her from hitting him. A campus cop doing his rounds saw the whole thing and had no choice but to arrest both. Charges were dropped because the player did nothing wrong. You should learn something before you run your mouth about an incident. And furthermore this white girl’s father publicly blamed her because he knew she was the aggressor. In his own word he “felt sorry” for Courtney Upshaw because it wasn’t Upshaw’s fault. There ya go there sweetie. You still didn’t answer the question though. How many dawgs have been arrested in the past 3-4 years? Isn’t it like 25 over the last 4 years?

NCAA COPS- THE OFFICIAL FACTS

March 8th, 2010
11:30 am

Georgia and Auburn are tied for 3rd place with 5 other programs for the most major infractions cases brought against the program by the ncaa. Just a fact. Bama has had 3 major cases brought against them. All in the 90s and 2000s. The textbook case would count as 4 except most of the violations were incidental and secondary and there was no MAJOR violation committed. The 5 players who were gaming the system to help friends/girlfriends get free textbooks received no illegal benefits and the school received no competitive advantage. Even with these 5 players the violations were counted as secondary since the school took immediate corrective action.

So the count according to the NCAA cops is still UGA/AU with 6 major infractions cases versus 3 or 4 against Bama.

And if Mettenburger was being a horse’s ass, then yeah losing his scholarship might be warranted. But that’s something that Coach Richt is going to have to determine.College kids are going to do stupid things. It’s not like the kid was selling drugs out of his car or trying to car jack someone like those thugs in Tennessee just did this past fall. As of this moment, I’m not sure I’d kick the guy off the team, but I think being benched for 5 games and losing the QB job would send a strong message.

Remerton is a one square mile municipality , which is literally down the street from Valdosta State University and is completely surrounded by the City of Valdosta. Remerton is essentially a bedroom community for VSU students, primarily consisting of apartments and duplexes. Their are several bars which accomodate underage drinking and stay open past the closing time of Valdosta bars. Their municipal court dockett consists primarily of alcohol related offenses and speeding tickets. They have an unusually large police force for their geographic and population size, which is conducive to generation of revenue in their municipal court. That having been said, they do enforce the laws in their little town. Maybe more of the scrutiny should be placed on the “student athlete” in question and his alleged illegal conduct. Without knowing the facts, the charges suggest that he was not only illegally drinking, but fought with the police or others, although if the disorderly conduct has to do with an alleged altercation with the police, then they have already cut him some slack by not charging him with felony obstruction of an officer. Then again, any felony charge would go to Superior Court, where the City of Remerton would not benefit from the fine, which would go to Lowndes County. Keep it in municipal court and the fine stays in Remerton. In any event, at ease Dawg fans. Valdosta has several UGA grads who are attorneys, including a former UGA quarterback. This will be handled. After all, a quarterback for UGA is entitled to special consideration, no matter what in which part of the state he travels .. There is just too much money involved in UGA football for it to be otherwise. After all, we have to keep football income high, so that the coaches can keep their outrageous salaries, while the legislature and BOR threaten to kill the 4-H program and reduce the county extension offices by half. So what if the farmers’ crops suffer through the loss of county agents? Having successful food crops and protecting Georgia’s agribusinesses pale in comparison as to how the football team performs against our traditional rivals on Saturday afternoons. People, get your prioirities straight, !

FYI- Remerton is a little incorporated “city” that is surrounded by Valdosta city limits.
They have a few square blocks and among their “possessions” are a few bars and restaurants frequented by VSU students. They make all their revenue off of traffic and disorderly/DUI type cases.

This player definitely should be suspended from the team and scholarship taken away. He doesn’t deserve to be on the team with this type of behavior. But yet people are quick to say “Oh he made a mistake, or he used bad judgement”. I think his judgement was pretty clear when he purchased that fake id. I’m sure his judgement was crystal clear when he walked into that bar and started drinking knowing that he was underage. So don’t make excuses for this “KID” cause he knew exactly what was going on, he knew exactly what he was getting into and he knew what he was doing. How embarrasing for his mom who works in the same office with Coach Bobo. She has to floored. She should make him pay for his own education and give his scholarship to some one more deserving. He could of been in Athens studying homework or that thick playbook. What a looser!!!!

Bama really?

You need some perspective. Sure Bama had Jimmy Johns and one other player who committed a felony. Both were immediately dismissed from both school and the team. Everyone has a bad apple or 2. The difference over all between discipline at Bama vs UGA is nothing short of astounding. Saban cleaned up all the bad apples in his 1st year in 07. In 08 and 09 we’ve probably had a grand total of 2-3 players arrested. Over the same time span UGA has had 15 or more players arrested. Seems like its a daily occurrence with the dawgs. Over the past 3-4 years its been something like 25 players arrested for UGA and not even half of that for Bama.

You can always point to one or 2 serious infractions by Jimmy Johns and one other player. But in terms of pure overall numbers of players getting in trouble with the law you guys have us beat by a mile.

It just a fact sir so deal with it.

The dawgs get arrested for stupid stuff like a suspended license or underage drinking. The Vols, Tide and Gators like to take it to another level with arrests for robbery, assult, DUI, drug possession. An arrest is an arrest but misdemeanors and felonies are not on the same level.

Stop trying to convince yourself of that. Does the name Michael Lemon ring a bell. Every school has the majority of their incidents as small silly stuff like underage drinking but they all also have their serious offenses as well. UGA IS NO DIFFERENT.

UGA in FACT has had more arrest than UF has since Urban Meyer has been at UF.

Maybe some of you should learn not to throw stones then you won’t look so foolish trying to spin away and make yourself’s feel better for being no better than the teams you chastise when they have a player in trouble.

Hey Gator Mania — here’s why Gary Brown was suspended. big difference between that and underage drinking. now…. the obstruction charge may be an equalizer, but I doubt it knowing how little it takes to get an obstruction charge.
Brown, a redshirt freshman from Greensboro, is facing two counts of misdemeanor battery for allegedly slapping a woman and scratching another at a party early Sunday morning. According to the police report, Brown used an open hand to strike the face of a woman trying to kick people out of a party. Another woman who intervened was scratched by Brown as he attempted to slap her arms away, according to the police report.

Allow me to help you out sir. Last year Alabama led the nation with 22 players in its bowl game who had already earned their degree. Just the facts sir.

Compare that with the 1998 UT title team where the grades of 21 players were changed to failing grades after the bowl game. They were given passing grades before the bowl game to keep them eligible and then the grades were changed to Fs after the game to give them the grade they deserved. Just the facts sir. Sure the ncaa looked into it but declared that it doesn’t have the power to go into a classroom and tell a professor what grade their student deserves or when he deserves it. This is common knowledge that this happened and was written about extensively by the Nashville paper. You may have gotten away with it but lets face it. We all know cheating when we see it.

Also, one other factoid regarding that team. It is said that none of the 18 black players who started on that team in the bowl game ever graduated from UT. Mmmmmh!

March 8th, 2010

I was a-r-r-e-s-t-e-d and released on BOND in 68 on Spring break in Datyona Beach Florida. I was charged with being on the hood ( outside of a moving car ) on the beach. The whole thing was in and out in about 1.5 hours. Went to jail in the Volusia County paddy wagon with several wacked out, sunburned rednecks and hippies. I just had some brews but was not charged for that. Why??? I was not a loud mouth punk QB from a major university, although I was a loud mouth UGA student and fan …….still am …..a fan. I kept my mouth closed that day and took my licks.

I had to go back in June that year to face the music and had to write a paper to turn in at court. Did that and that was that. This is so similar and it will not matter in the scheme of things. I am now 61 and it is only a fond memory of being young and dumb.

I don’t mean to make light of the charges – but I do remember being that age. I’m now a boring old man. But at that age I could have easily been in the same boat. I know that not all young people travel that route but I’d guess that most do. It’s just that time in life. I wish the kid well and hope that he either changes his behavior or gets smarter about it. But it is hard for me to put this sort of thing in the thug category – in my book it just isn’t a serious offense.

I hope the determination of who will be the QB will be made on the field. If a one-game suspension is the normal punishment for this – sure – do it. But I hope – and do believe – that this will not determine who wins the competition.

Lets face it. All of the college programs have to deal with these problems. Most of these kids are thugs and let the fame of playing major college ball go to their heads. All college coaches have to work their “butts off” trying to keep these kids out of trouble. This kind of behavior has always been there. Unfortunately the police don’t tolerate it near as much as they use to and with use of camera phones and the internet everything they do spreads around the country in a short period of time. 20 to 30 years ago this story wouldn’t have made it past the local paper.

Sorry dude but that is your opinion and is not based upon any facts or hard data. Please learn the difference. Also, if the Tuscaloosa pd was that lenient than Jimmy Johns never would have been arrested.

Also, your opinion doesn’t jive with the facts, especially in 2007. There was a series of articles written in the Tuscaloosa news in 2007 regarding the perceived aggression with which the local cops seemed to pursue Bama football players.

As a matter of fact Rashad Johnson was arrested in a bar for a scuffle that videotape verified and proved wasn’t even a scuffle. The video vindicated Johnson and brought about the series of articles as to why the police seemed to basically be harassing football players.

Your opinion is in conflict with the facts sir.

Shane,

You need to do your research on all the bama players who have already earned their degrees. Sorry sir but this has been a selling point to parents whose kids Bama has been recruiting and it is an academic achievement point of pride which is well documented. The fact that you don’t like it doesn’t change things.

As for your own opinion of Bama players getting away with all sorts of crime I think your bias is getting in the way of your thinking. You could probably arrest mounds of Bama, UGA, UF whoever students ever summer night drinking at a frat party. The cops will give a certain amount of leeway because they know darn near every underaged kid on campus is doing some illegal underaged drinking, That’s just common freaking sense and you need to have some perspective about it. When you are more blatant about it or just plain stupid and doing it out in the open air rather than inside at a frat house or apartment is when you get in trouble. Apparently the UGA players either just lack common sense or are so out of control that they are blatant in flouting the drinking laws and hence end up getting arrested. You are completely lacking in perspective.

The bama team is filled with thugs and criminals, but saban has the local cops in his pocket, and they keep all the crimes and arrests covered up. Tuscaloosa–trailerparkville—filled with a bunch of ignorant rednecks and a mediocre college!!!! But do it all it takes to keep the thugs eligible!!

I’m an Auburn fan but this story is a non-issue. Who doesn’t remember having a fake id? This incident could occur for any student (not just athletes) at any university.

The only problem with your argument is he’s an athlete competing for the starting quarterback position at a major university…..he should have better judgment capabilities than that…..he supposedly is a role model for young kids. Hopefully, this’ll teach him a lesson he’ll not soon forget. I’m certainly not a UGA fan but, I hate to see any young man start off this way.

I hope CMR can get someone’s attention on this Springs Squad and deliver a message by example and change the MENTALITY and ATTITUDE.

ACCOUNTABILTY is something that our nemesis preaches and focuses on and apparently many on this blog think” It is a college kid drinkin”….well with that kind of attitude among our student athletes and parents we will continue this downward spiral to a mediocridity in the SEC.

All have been in the 90s and 2000s. We still trail you and AU though. Just the facts sir and this is verifiable with the ncaa. Do your research sir.

I have sir.

All have been in the 90s and 2000s. Take that for example. Everyone knows Bear Bryant was a drunk and paid his players. He ran a dirty program but it was all kept quiet because he won.

Howtofish,

No one cares about 5-10 years ago in the early 2000s when Georgia was up because Florida had zook and bama was devastated by probation. You can choose to live in the past if you would like to but I prefer to live in the present and future.

5 or 10 years ago isn’t relevant to today and if we want to pick a point in time to brag about our team’s success then why not just pick all time or at least the time frame that starts with the inception of the 2 division format? In your case you only pick the last 8 years or so because otherwise it doesn’t suit your argument.

We can all pick a point in time to make our program look deceivingly good. That’s just weak. For example I can pick the last 100 years of football since Alabama is the nation’s winningest program of the last 100 years. But it doesn’t have anything to do with the 2010 season now does it?

I already mentioned all of our probations were in the 90s and 2000s or did you miss that? Also, I never claimed we run the cleanest program around and in the late 90s under Debose things certainly weren’t being run cleanly. No argument here. I’m simply pointing out to you that you’ve had your own little issues with running a filthy program. The crap that was going on under Dooley? Jan Kemp exposing the fact that a lot of the Georgia players were being graduated but were functionally illiterate? I got news for you. Ozzie Newsome, Dwight Stephenson, all of the Alabama greats of the 70s. Those guys were literate.

What Kemp exposed at Georgia was nothing short of mind blowing as far as the preferential treatment towards football players and graduating players that were illiterate. You should read about it sometime. And lets not even get into Jim Harrick Jr. and how man points do you get for a 3 pt shot?

As for calling Bear a drunk. He certainly was successful for a guy who was such the drunk that you make him out to be. Hard to fathom how a guy who is such a bad drunk can be so incredibly successful. But since you knew the man I guess you alone can testify as to what a drunk of a loser he was.

i went to georgia southern and valdosta is alot like statesboro. The cops in these small towns will arrest you or write you a ticket for anything. My cousin and I got an underage drinking ticket and they put our beers in ziplock bags for evidence. I was walking from my apartment complex to the one next door (i could throw a rock to it). They pulled up in the grass, handcuffed us, called in like three other cop cars for backup. This was on a friday afternoon in August the weekend before school started and i was turning 21 in like three weeks. I had to do community service, go to AA meetings, and probation for a yr., and paid over a thousand dollars. My probation officer said they arrested over 200 people that weekend for underage drinking. I HATE THE COPS IN STATESBORO, GA. This is a true story. They prey on the college students there from the bars to waiting to give you a DUI when you leave. They pull you for anything hoping to get a DUI..rolling through stop signs…high beams…whatever

This goes to show you that this guy is not capable of being a leader of any major college football program. Not so much about his talent, but the coaches will not be able to trust him.

College students and alcohol. My son, a 19 year old college student, walked out of an Athens Bar after 2 beers. NOT DRUNK, NOT DRIVING, NOT
CAUSING TROUBLE. Bicycle cop drives up. “How old are you? 19, an honest answer. “Had any alcohol?” “Yes, 2 beers, another honest answer.
“SON ,You are underage and under arrest” Off to jail he goes. NOW I agree he was breaking the law but JAIL ! I don’t understand ! Took him
2 years to somehow get this cleared so he could fill out a resume
without listing this arrest. There needs to be a better way to handle
College students, who are NOT DUI and a few beers !!!!!!!!!!!

Heh, I was in Remerton when it happened… kind of upset I didn’t see it go down, though. Meh, nothing special in Remerton, people get arrested left and right for underage drinking, drinking and driving, disorderly conduct, etc down there. The police are really out to get the college students. Remerton, itself, is the Alcohol hub INSIDE of Valdosta, it’s its own city, mind you, but it is completely within the city limits of Valdosta. It’s the college bar scene for Valdosta State University, which is down the street, literally, from Remerton. The police, in Remerton which is the size of about a city block completely made of bars and shoddy apartments, make a killing from arresting college students.

Interesting story, though, I was more interested in the Milledgeville case, that happened over the weekend, that I was watching on ESPN at Mulligan’s, a bar down a few from Flip Flops, when the UGA QB incident was going down.

I am a student at Alabama but I have many buddies in Valdosta, So many UGA kids came through this past weekend on their way to Spring Break destinations. Remerton is like a little city within valdosta that is literally 1 square mile, they have like 6 cops. It just so happens that most off campus housing sits on this “city” and these cops always screw over college kids, especially if you are from the Atlanta area. Every college kid drinks and no college is any better, just matters if you get caught. If news papers would react to national and international news and horrific stories from around the world with as much speed and interest as they do dirty laundry stories I would have more respect for them. Thousands of college and high school kids from all over this country got caught drinking this week. Most likely many of them possessed alcohol and fake IDs. Did I see that covered by the self righteous media? No! Who cares? Not a story that can’t be handled by parents and a coaching staff. I wish I had the ability to put anyone that works for a newspaper or TV news station under the same microscope they put these kids under. How many would be caught buying drugs or seen driving away from happy hour after 4 or 5 drinks? Or leaving a strip club or using a racial slur. How many personal emails would we read as entertainment? I’m thinking it would be mind boggling how those that think we care about such trivial events are participating in the same actions they so ardently cover as news. Besides I would never want a panty waist woos playing on my team. I’m glad he seems normal. Makes me feel good that my generation isn’t so removed from the kids today. The US News Rankings use an equation that factors in race, among other things, as to how they rank them. This “levels” the playing field for inner-city and very rural schools. The Newsweek ranking are based only on academic achievement and no one gets “handicapped” to help them in the rankings.

The issue not being spoken of is Coach Richt. There is a character defect in the way he coaches. What was it he said of penalties last year? “We didn’t worry about penalties at Florida State” is what he said. What was it about that first score in a game a couple years ago? “I don’t want you guys scoring without getting a penalty afterwords.” A few years ago I thought Coach Richt was a class guy, I really did. But something happened to him and his team play and discipline are showing it big-time.

When you are the #11 QB prospect in the nation according to Rivals and are in the hunt for a starting shot at QB at an SEC school, and are getting a free ride at one of the better schools in the South, you don’t risk it by going out and partying. If you want to do that, stop playing football and pay for your own schooling. This guy was given a gift from Above and he is risking it by going out and drinking. Foolish.

It’s official – OBAMA PRESS RELEASE – 13 NATIONAL TITLES

Hello, everybody. Please, have a seat. Have a seat, Crimson Tide. Go Tide. And welcome to the White House, and congratulations on your 13th – let me check that – 13th national championship, the first in 17 years. I think it’s safe to say the Tide is back. I’ve got to tell you, everyone was really excited about this team coming today, except for my Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, because he was born and raised in Auburn. He’s hiding in his office right now. But we do have some Tide fans here that are worth a little bit of acknowledgement. I want to start by thanking Robert Witt, the president of the University of Alabama. I also want to acknowledge the mayor of Tuscaloosa, Walter Maddox. You can give them a round of applause. … I want to recognize Senator (Richard) Shelby and Senator (Jeff) Sessions, who are here, and our terrific Surgeon General, who is an Alabama native. Virginia Benjamin is in the house. And to all those who make this program what it is, the students and the trainers and the staff and the ticket-takers, fans in Tuscaloosa and all across the country, you should all be very proud, and I want to congratulate you.
“Obviously, I want to congratulate Coach Saban and thank him and his wife Terry for being with us today. There’s no question this team is here in large part because of what Coach Saban has done. There aren’t too many coaches in the country who have the knowledge, the motivational skills, the program discipline, to win two national championships in six years, let alone at two different schools. I think it’s a testimony to his incredible skills as a coach.

“I’ve got to congratulate Mark Ingram for becoming the first Heisman Trophy winner in Alabama history. Mark rushed for over 1,500 yards last season, the most ever by a Crimson Tide running back, and I know his selflessness and dedication has made his team and his family very, very proud. I also want to recognize your captains – Rolando McClain, Mike Johnson and Javier Arenas – and all the upperclassmen for their leadership on this team. Congratulations, to all of you. I especially want to congratulate Rolando for winning the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker. And I know that part of Rolando’s talent comes from his intelligence and his judgment. In fact, one of his teammates was asked to describe him. He said, ‘Just picture Coach Saban being huge and being able to play football.’

“Now one of the trademarks of this team has always been its unwavering focus on what’s important. And I know shortly after the 2008 season ended, coach hung a picture of the Florida Gators winning the national championship in the locker room. It’s not too subtle what he was saying. He asked his players if they wanted to work hard enough to beat their teammates in a drill or if they wanted to work hard enough to be the best team in the country. It’s pretty clear what choice they made. That’s the kind of tone this team sets, both on and off the field. It’s why these young men – and this is something I’m very proud of – had the second-highest graduation rate of any team ranked the top 25. It shows that these guys have their priorities straight. Together they contributed more than 3,500 hours of community service that Alabama student-athletes performed last year. That spirit continued earlier today when the team met a group of kids from one of D.C.’s roughest neighborhoods and helped teach them about the importance of staying in school and making healthy choices. That’s how champions act, in football and in life. As Coach (Paul) Bryant once said, ‘I think the most important thing of all for any team is a winning attitude.’ I think this team would make his proud because they’ve got that winning attitude.

“So congratulations to all of you. The best of luck next season. I know spring practice starts Friday. Whew. Man, next Friday, huh? So enjoy these last few days off, and congratulations to all of you for just an extraordinary season. Roll Tide!”

The kid made bad decisions and in the end it will hurt him more than anyone else. In some ways it both helps and hurts the team. With the automatic suspension that UGA imposes for underaged drinking Mettenberger will not play in the season opener. It is now down to two Murray and Gray, they will get more reps. Lets just hope neither of them get hurt or make poor decisions as Mettenberger did. In the end, most kids his age do similar things (that does not make it o.k.), and he will have the opportunity to learn from his errors in judgement. Like another poster said, I can see upto a 4 game supension given the numerous charges against him. Should he be kicked off the team? Probably not. It would depend on if this is a first offense or not. Lots of running, community service, and a few other penalties are in certainly in order.

The legal drinking age needs to change. If you’re an adult at 18, you should have full legal status in all cases. It’s laughable that you can buy a house, vote, join the army or get married but can’t drink a beer. It’s a shame he’ll be suspended, but perhaps this gives Murray the 1 game head start he needs to prove himself.

Personally the drinking age is a damn joke. You can vote, You can work, you can get married and have kids, you can even go to war and die for your country for crying out loud. You can do all these things legally before the age of 21.Yet you can’t drink, BS. Ever wonder why the drinking age is 21? I mean the real reason, not the BS the goverment tell’s you. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, that’s right money plain and simple. How much money do you think the states and counties make on the consumption of alcohol by a person under the age of 21 law? I would’nt even venture to take a guess. I don’t remember ever voting on this law and now they snuck this super speeding law past us, you know the law that say they can stick it to you for going a certain speed on certain type road an extra $200. Don’t remember voting on that law either. How can they pass these laws without the public’s voting on them? People are worried that we are heading towards communisim. Hell people wake up your rights are not your rights anymore, they belong to the police, the state and the federal goverment.

Getting back to Mr Mettenburger. Kick his ass off the team. This kid knew the rules before he even set foot on campus. You agreed on these rules. You get a free education, Free room and board and free food I think. You purposley break the rules then you should lose all these things. You were given something that kids bust there arses off ever day to earn. And you want to throw it all away. I say sorry can’t trust you anymore, bye, bye, nothing but love though. I hear WalMart is looking, you might want to even try Alabama. Man I’m just sick and tired of these stupid over entitled brats these day’s. I love how these Bamer fans are all over an 18 year old kid drinking on spring break. They seem to have no problem with the fact that they had a coach who showed worse judgment and they presently have a coach who is a liar (”I will not be the football coach at the University of Alabama”).

Now to the real issue: This kid has shown amazingly bad judgment, although not as bad as Mike Price showed. I question his maturity, even for an 18 year old, in that he should know that as a player competing for the starting QB job on an SEC team that this would be big news. For all the other 18 year olds arrested on spring break it will be basically meaningless.

Well, the kid blew it. First team practice reps are limited and, come fall, Mett will miss some reps. In a two QB race I give the edge to Murray, but Gray will certainly not switch to WR now. There are several things to consider here, 1- Mett will miss one game for sure, possibly three. Richt suspended Muzzy for an extra game for mouthing off at the cops when he was arrested for underage drinking so it will depend on whats in the police report. So the fall practice reps with the first team will be divided between Gray and Murray. 2- Bobo has been stressing making good decisions under pressure to the QBs in an effort to reduce turnovers. Guess who just flunked that test! 3- QB is a leadership posistion. A good leader NEVER does anything that could cause his people to lose their respect for him. Do the coaches still trust this guy to lead the team? So, Mr Mettenberger, you have humiliated your Mom in front of her bosses and co-workers, you have betrayed the coaching staff that trusted you, and you have let down your team mates. Most of all, you have let down yourself. Not many people have a chance to be the starting QB of a high profile football team. You may have blown your best chance to ever start a game at UGA.

On the way to… Florida? Spring Break?

Thank goodness he was stopped before he could get to Daytona (or wherever he was headed). There might have been some underage drinking down there, no place for a college student.

Not a cool move on Mett’s part. But, it has nothing to do with CMR’s attitude toward or enforcement of discipline. Yall know good and well he’s preached to the players and they’ve even had ‘classes’ on how to act, etc. Unfortunate as this episode is, it doesn’t tarnish the team, CMR, nor UGA. There’ll be hundreds of students arrested during the next couple weeks…from all colleges; cept maybe BYU.

But, as has been suggested, Mett will probably be suspended for the first game; which will take him out of starter contention for at least half the season.

The kid knowingly broke the rules and should be punished for it. The police and the court system will handle much of the work. Richt and UGA will handle the rest of it. He will have to pay the price. There is an Athletic Department rule concerning underage drinking and he will be suspended for the first game. In addition, I am sure he will have to run and perform several community service acts in addition to any punishment handed out by the courts. From my vantage point, he will suffer more severely than most, and that should be enough. If Richt and UGA think he should be kicked off the team, then I am sure that is what will happen. In any event, he will not be the starting QB for the season and therefore, Murray and Gray will have a huge advantage over Mettenberger.

Most of your bloggers on this site are too young to know much of anything. I supect most are urban punks that stay with in screaming range of mommy’s purse and have never, ever attended a major university and graduated. Period. If you did not go away to college, then you have nothing that is applicable to say in this matter.

Anyway, Joe Namath and Ken Stabler, both Alabama QBs AND NFL GREATS …………..GREATS AT BAMA AND NFL, were drunks. BOTH were benched at one time or other by Bear Bryant and if correct, Namath MISSED the Cootn Bowl vs Texas for the NC.
This is only ONE example young people, about college jocks.

Young people ……………….this has nothing to do with anything beyond being, selfish, young and dumb.

Namath and Stabler were both as guilty at Zack. They both did allright in the end.

Get a life. Get a life …………the more your bad mouth CMR and UGA, the more we know that you too are young ands dumb and without a college experience.

I just hope his lack of judgment is used as a teaching point and example to the rest of the team. It’s funny how these fans from various teams come in here and criticise or players for getting arrested for parking tickets, jay-walking and drinking yet their players are getting arrested for armed robbery, cocaine dealing, or suspended for selling the books they received on scholarship. Keep up the smack talking because UGA is going to dominate for the next 3 years! See you in December BAMA!

I watched Alabama. They lined up and I thought to myself in such a pressure situation, will they jump ? Sure can’t have a penalty here. And, they did not. And, they won.

I have watched my beloved Georgia Bulldogs Football Program NOT LAST YEAR, but the last 4 years in a row AVERAGE # 96 in the nation in penalties.

I have also in the last 4 years watched us go 1-3 vs Florida, 1-3 vs the vols, 2-2 vs Kentucky and 10-10 vs just The SEC East.

We’ve lost 14 games the last 4 years.

Other than just only last year, we also led the nation in arrests/suspensions.

We once again don’t have a QB ready and in fact have 3 freshmen QBs and 1 guy been here now 4 years who the coaches want to move to WR but he doesn’t want to go to WR and he also just last Friday criticized the Offensive Coaching Staff at UGA for not having competition for the QB job last year, not this year.

We have stayed in the press for arrests/suspensions, and not just all little junk, either. We have had 100 arrests/suspensions in the Coach Richt Era already. Except for last year, it has been every year.

We have stayed in the press for penalties, ones detailed above that cost us in the loss to LSU, the loss to Oklahoma State to name games lost where we gave them touchdowns, just gave them to them.

And, we stop ourselves on Offense, and put ourselves in silly holes for drives.

We have lost 8 games to teams not ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll the year we lost to them. Oklahoma State is 1 of those 8.

We have not coached the offense well. Any player analysis of who starts and who is behind them or redshirted instead, just jumps out at you.

Spring Break and a guy everyone figures is the back-up to the other guy who has had injuries both of the last 2 years already, has 5 charges against him.

I have no idea how a blog can be written about discipline, leave out the losses to Oklahoma State to begin the season and to LSU to ruin the season, and not correlate the penalties to the arrests/suspensions (other than just only the 1 year last year), and not say we have a problem. In fact, say we don’t.

You do allude to the fact that when we are not in the press for penalties at the alarming rate of # 96 Average NCAA Rank the last 4 years with 14 losses and only 10-10 vs SEC East teams and arrests/suspensions which other than last year have been an average over 10 a year, that we are in the press for fumbles 21 per year the last 4 years in a row, and in the press for 14 interceptions per year every year for the last 4 years as well.

Maybe you can say, let’s not talk about last year, but we have 3 freshmen quarterbacks with all their mistakes coming as we have once again not prepared our quarterbacks.

Indeed, not prepared anybody for anything.

And, this has been a problem at least for 4 years in a row now. And, in arrests/suspensions all 10 years of the Coach Richt Era except for last year.

And, we are losing to teams we should beat 8 losses to unranked teams not in the Top 25 Final AP Poll the year we lost to them in the Coach Richt Era.

And, we are not beating the good teams, losing 8 of 11 vs teams ranked in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll the year we played them winning only 3 of 11 in the Coach Richt Era.

And, we have a losing record to the Top 25 teams in the Final AP Poll the year we played them too at 17-19 in the Coach Richt Era.

We are NOT Florida State of the 1990’s.

We are an undisciplined group of players, have been, continue to be, and pardon me, we are in Decline. You cannot ignore all the bad press.

Our problem is not that Zach Mettenberger has 2 fake ids, gets into it with the police in South Georgia on the Florida line, and at 18 is drinking at a bar with friends. Our problem is that it is heaped upon us when he is getting most press he could ever imagine, as our back-up QB to a guy who has had several injuries the previous 2 years, for a team who really cannot afford any more bad press.

We’ve got problems.

And, Coach Richt should have already said he’s suspended for the first 6 games.

If you think this does not affect our football program, think again.

2 felonies 2 fake ids.

I have never understood why a college student on an athletic scholarship is expected to act any differently than one on a academic scholarship or, for that matter, any other student. What percentage of the student body at UGA (or Alabama, or GT, or UT, etc.) have a fake ID so they can get into a bar?

What these guys have to understand is that they are, for better or for worse, watched more closely than other students. I wonder how many college students get arrested for DUI in Georgia per week. And if that behavior makes you a “thug”, then Fraternity Row is Thug Central.

It is only a matter of time before YOUR school runs into similar issues with its players – and yes, you too BAMA. You can repeat SABAN’s name and COMPLETE CHARACTER ad nauseum, but the bottom line is your time is coming….it may not be this year or the next, but it will happen.

Ultimately, Mettenberger took the risk and got caught. Underage students take this risk every time they drink and that includes YOUR school’s student athletes! To dismiss this notion, is naive!

In a somewhat related matter, and I’m not referring to this specific situation, but I think we will see schools in the future become less and less tolerant of bad or unlawful behavior. It’s too much of a liability to your schools image and as you can see by all the comments posted here, just invites criticism. Recently, UCF booted their highest rated recruit from it’s last class, OL Jose Jose for unlawfully having a firearm and UF quickly released highly touted 5 star recruit Gary Brown from last years class for his incident. I think schools are starting to get tired of this foolishness and are starting to put their foot down plus hopefully sending a firm message to the rest of the team that it will no longer be tolerated.

Seems to me that the solution to this ‘rash’ of underage drinking in small college towns – too shocking to be believed, I know – can best be handled with the respective schools working more closely with the local constabulary to have a bit more compassion…or have their parking passes and ticket allotment canceled…or the school spending anymore money with the damn place.

All I can say is that “DISCIPLINE” is still a foreign word in Athens, Ga. NO ONE, NOT EVEN THE HEAD COACH, can understand the meaning. i graduated Valdosta State and worked at a bar in Remerton while in school and can tell you first had that the Remerton police department is as corrupt as something out of Serpico. what probably happened is that mettenberger was just out having a good time and the remerton police caught wind that there was a semi-high profile individual drinking underage and went out of their way to charge him with anything they could. if a normal person is arrested in remerton for underage drinking, dui, possession of marijuana, pretty much anything that is not a felony, they don’t even go to court. they just pay off fines, do some community service, and the charges get dropped.

Not sure what to make of this. Remerton Police are constantly after kids in this area of Valdosta. As a 50 year old male, I was told to stay out of that area. The kid should have known this, but that being said, Remerton Police are a joke! They are looking to make a quick buck for the city. This could have happened to anyone.

Mark Richt, once again proves that he is a phony christian. I have no idea what kind of god he worhsips, it definitely ain’t the one he keeps referring to on t.v.

As a result of his wickedness the dogs have been forever cursed.

No one is to blame but Mettenberger himself. This leaves UGA with only 2 QB’s until the freshman enters this fall.
There must be something about QB’s whose last name ends with BERGER getting in trouble at small town GA bars. How ironic would it be if the Steelers draft this kid in 2014?

This kid had no clue, after serving twenty seven years as a deputy, the obstruction part worries me.

I’d rather have Reggie Ball then Zach Mettenberger.
