NFL teams making Brandon Spikes answer for Ealey eye gouge

Former Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes faced an obvious question from potential employers at the NFL Combine.

The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun says the question went like this:

“Why did you try to gouge a player’s eyes out?”

The player, of course, was Georgia freshman running back Washaun Ealey.

And Spikes’ answer to the NFL teams that asked the question?

“I told them it’s the SEC, Florida-Georgia is a big rivalry,” Spikes said, according to the Sun. “There were a lot of emotions going on. Both sides were taking shots at each other. But that’s why I suspended myself. That’s not the way the game is supposed to be played.”

The apparent attempted eye-gouging –-  cameras caught Spikes sticking his fingers inside Ealey’s facemask — occurred during Florida’s Oct. 31 victory over Georgia. Spikes was suspended for one half of the following game by Florida coach Urban Meyer, and the player extended his own suspension to a full game because, he said at the Combine,  “I didn’t want young guys to think that was the right way to play the game.”

I love Auburn and we don’t even have to try and gouge someones eye out to whip Gators under CUM 100% of the time. Now that I think of it we don’thave to call time outs when we are up by 4 touchdowns and we don’t run up and down the sidelines waving a towel like a third grader or cry like a baby when we lose. We really can’t judge Spikes’ character because of our bias. I kind of liked his ability and his passion for the game, but there was times when Spikes to it too far.

The real question we should ask ourselves is what did we do about it? Spikes danced on top of Moreno after he was down, then attempts to rip Ealy’s eyes out. I don’t know about you guys but if anything like that was done to any of my teammates, I would be the first to go after Spikes or one of their guys. Yet we did absolutely nothing about it. Football is mental as well and when your team is getting beat up, you have to fight back.

Spikes is a real good guy, and he shouldn’t have done that. And he apologized, and Ealey accepted, and Spikes was suspended. Perhaps we should all move on.

The shameful thing, besides the senseless act of Spike’s retaliation itself, is it has allowed the Bulldogs to focus (sorry about the play on words) on that one play and be outraged instead of being outraged at the sorry job their team and the coaching staff did that day. I remember 07 when the Dogs danced in the endzone and while I didn’t like that classless act, I still remember how angry I was at our team after that game. Yes, UGA was the better team that year, but we layed down late in that game and embarrased ourselves with OUR play and there’s never an excuse for that.

Personally, I didn’t like what Spikes did and felt like he should be suspended and punished, but I think alot of Ga fans can learn from that (Ga) player. Did you say everyone is 2-7 against the gators not just Georgia? Not quite. Auburn has held their own and was 2-0 against Tebow. We’ve won 4 of the last 6 against the gators from 1999-2009. The Mississippi teams have held their own against the gators. I think each of the Miss schools has won something like 3 games each against the gators in the last 20 years and that’s having played them only 6 or maybe 8 times each. In the 2008 SECCG our All american guard Michael Johnson took a blow to the head from Spikes or Carlos Dunlap after a pass play. It was behind the ref and the tv cameras didn’t catch it either since they were focused on the play in front.

One of the 2 took the cheap shot. Johnson looked around and couldn’t tell which of the 2 did it but it was etched into his memory and that of the Alabama O-line throughout the offseason. They kept it quiet though so as not to appear as whiners or sore losers. When Spikes gouged Ealey it got out because some of the Bama players had mentioned it and were convinced it was probably Spikes who did the head blow to Johnson.

Doesn’t matter but if it was Spikes I’m glad cause out of all the Florida players on their D I noticed he was the one in particular whose azz we just wore out in the 2009 rematch. When he wasn’t chasing after the back of Ingram on a screen play he was getting run over by Trent Richardson or getting bullied by Michael Johnson and co. Some payback was due him and he got it good.

Got no problem with the rest of the gators although I still wonder if it might have been Dunlap. He also has done some cheap shots and personal fouls caught on camera that weren’t good at all. Dunlap tends to get frustrated when he’s getting whipped and starts taking shots. Anybody who has watched Florida in a couple of competitive games has noticed this about Dunlap. Anyway, just my 2 cents about those 2 and Spikes in particular since most of us still think it was Spikes who laid the cheap shot to Johnson. And no offense to the gators cause everybody has a bad apple or 2 but these 2 are definitely Florida’s 2 bad apples.

On top of that it was kind of disturbing to see Tebow defend the actions of Spikes with some nonsense about both teams were doing it. Not only was that not a shining moment for Tebow but anybody who paid attention knew it was rather absurd for him to try and justify Spike’s behavior by trying to point out what he perceived to be someone else’s bad behavior.

I think Every Florida player other than Tim Tebow is complete trash. I wish someone would have taken Spikes outside of the stadium and beat him blue. If all of you remember, not only did the douche bag try to gouge out Ealey’s eyes, but Georgia’s first drive, first play of the game…… Ealey got the ball and ran it up the gut. When the whistle was blown, Spike’s delivered a helmet to helmet on Ealey and didn’t even get a penalty on him. He and his teammates are the biggest pieces of trash to ever need recycling. I’m glad Bama beat their asses. I wish Cody would have stepped on Spike’s facemask and ground his cleats in his face.

beat us all but 3 times in 20 consecutive years

won 3 National Championships since 1996

we’ve not won a national championship in over 3 decades

we run in here say we’re better than FU in Coach Richt Era

9 games Coach Richt Era, we’ve won 2

run in here say we’re better than FU in Coach Richt Era

FU has prepared their QB every year of CUM’s career there

UGA hasn’t prepared a QB again as in 2006 2009 now 2010

Spikes’ attempted eye gpouging act was horrific and inexcusable. Those of us who were at that game (both Gator and Dawg fans) could easily see that there were cheap shots by both teams. Thst does not justify Spikes’ act. Easley is a great player, and he seems to be a class act which is good for UGA and the SEC. I fail to understand why so many UGA fans continue to take shots at UF while their team has floundered around in mediocrity for the past 2 years. UGA clobbbered UF in ‘07 because they had a much better team, and they played with heart and determination. Nearly every team in college football has a thug or a potential thug, and both UF and UGA are in this category.

Old Urban should have been held accountable as much as Spikes. But, at the time of the gouging, Urban was feeling chest pain thinking about Saban. The president of FL, not wanting to aggravate Urban’s chest pain any more than Saban already had, decided not to force Urban to suspend Spikes, because he did not want to risk Urban having to take a leave of absence at this critical time in the race for the National Championship. A sterling example of compassion on the part of the FL president toward his revenue producing coach.

5- Why does Meyer leave schools every 1-6 years over his 24 year career?
6- Does an eye gouge by your team Captain reflect on the character of your Coach who chose him as Captain?
7- Why did Meyer only get to 1 Natl Champ as an Asst Coach in 15 years as opposed to Richt’s 5 National Championship games if Meyer is so good?
8- Why can’t Meyer beat a top 10 ranked team without Percy if he’s good?
9- Why does Meyer schedule teams like Charleston Southern, Troy, & Florida International if he’s good?

Spikes 5.2 40 Speed Not NFL Fast Enough

Nor does anyone here think the 2 Florida Captains, Tim Tebow, or Brandon Spikes, will be drafted in the 1st round of the NFL. That really says it all. Apparently, the NFL doesn’t agree with the hype about Florida. Tebow will be lucky to get drafted in the 3rd round. Spikes will join him. Wow, what a team.

Lord of the Lizards, as a Dawg fan I agree 100% It was a stupid act for Spikes to do that and I was as fired up as anyone when I saw it (and no he’s not the only one doing it – those scrums can get pretty nasty). However I think you hit the nail on the head regarding how a team reacts to something like that. The difference between UGA and UF isnt talent – we get our share of that and should be able to compete with ANYBODY. However as far as the Gators are concerned its mental, and for the life of me I cant understand why we cant get it out of our heads – even after a win. Maybe we need to get a run of 2-3 in a row tofinally get it out. Of course that is easier said than done against elite SEC teams.

Jimmy

Coaches care about winning, no doubt. But they also care about the futures of their players. Texas basketball coach Rick Barnes was quoted as saying he would trade in a national championship if he could get all of his players to the NBA. Of course he said this for recruiting purposes. This kind of talk turns off alumni but is necessary.

IMO, Georgia does a much better job in this regard than Florida does. Some say it’s not Urban Myers job to get his players into the NFL. I say it is, if he truly cares about the future of his players, instead of just using them to win and them spitting them back out like he currently does w/ no true hopes of NFL glory. In that case I guess they’ll have to rely on the “prestigous” Florida degree that none of them bother to get in the first place???

The type of behavior exhibited by Spikes is horrible and I would not tolerate it. I will always run clean programs and not tolerate any thuggery…..well except armed robbery the day before a big game. Well there was that time I was drunk and wrecked my car with a couple of “hostesses” in the back seat. Also there was that time I called Urban Meyer a cheater and liar then it turned out he was not. Other than that, I will always be clean. Well I did forget to mention that Reggie Bush thing when I was first at USC. I hope the NCAA forgets all about that incident. I also hope Layla forgets about the “hoochies in my car”.

Mel Kiper Questions Spikes Psychological Profile

March 2nd, 2010
9:04 am

Kiper say Spikes can learn the position but it’s Spike’s pyschological weakness that concerns NFL teams.

The eye gouge represents someone who doesn’t fundmanetally know the difference between right and wrong and who has some esteem issues after getting embarrased 5 or 6 times by getting his helmet knocked off, responded by trying to blind Ealey and end Ealey’s career.

I aghree with ESPN’s expert Kiper on this, no brainer. Spikes is not psychologically mature enough to be an NFL star.

LOL,

Some of you people crack me up. Talking on these blogs as if anybody important actually reads them. Actually I think the scouts asked Spikes that question because they want him to continue those kind of actions ON the field. It’s the NFL, they encourage that kind of brute violent mentality. They just want to make sure he can “turn if off” OFF the field. You know, so they can endorse products to us lily white folk.

The Dawgs can’t win but one game a year against UF . The Gators have definitely played well in recent years in that game . Tebow has been such a huge factor in those games, his absence will be interesting. As far as cheap shots during football games, thats a very subjective discussion. My version of a cheap shot and someone else’s version is totally different. What happens on the bottom of a pile would make the Pope cringe. The bigger the game the nastier it gets , thats just football . Spikes has not and will not lose any money because of this, the questions are all to see how he handles them.

Spikes Got Worse Every Year at Florida

March 2nd, 2010
9:35 am

Like Tebow, Spikes got worse every year at Florida under Meyer’s coaching.

Spikes production went from 131 tackles in 2007, to 93 in 2008, to 52 in 2009.

Something is wrong with the coaching when you see a player with talent become so much worse under Coach Meyer.

poopdawg, one can assume that you enjoy very much cage fighting and the blood on the canvas(even they aren’t allowed to gouge eyes). I have always thought that Ray Lewis, if not a NFL football player, would be in jail! Remember his “little” legal problems. I believed someone died in an incident in which he was involved. I like aggression, but I don’t like or approve of thuggery. I was a middle lb for years myself. You can be aggressive without being a thug. Spikes has displayed the latter.

Tebow got worse too, Tebow had a lot of potential when he arrived at Florida, and after Urban Meyer’s coaching, got worse every year.

It is a good question to Spikes. Why should a team consider Spikes when he will act with criminal intent during a football game? Character matters, just ask Tank, PacMan, Vick, etc…I don’t think NFL teams are looking for choir boys, but criminals are at the wrong end of the spectrum.

The Spikes ordeal would have had less exposure if Meyer would have handled it differently. half a game suspension against Vandy is hardly a suspension. Meyer’s burshing it to the side very lightly is more of a problem than the eye gouging. I was at the game and Spike’s helmet came off several times during the game and once Spikes had to come offf the field he was hit so hard.
None of these hits were late or blindside hits when he wasn’t looking, they were all man-up hits.
His NFL status will be hurt by his actions but, if I remember correctly Spikes apologized and Ealey accepted his apology.
Time to move on.

Typical Florida fans….bitch, moan and point fingers when some bash’es their team and coach…but they look like fools trying to justify Spikes conduct during the game. Spikes is nothing more than a thug…I’ll bet that he isn’t graduating at the top of his class either. Florida has a way of getting athletes with less than stellar grades in thier school (Lawerence Marsh comes to mind,…. UGA, S.Carolina Clemson,Bama all backed off him because of his poor high school grades…but he got in Florida)They have been letting athletes slide through school for a long time as long as they were contributing to their football program.Spikes is another example of the inmates running the asylum with Meyer as the warden. It eventually will all come crashing down on them and its going to be fun to watch. Florida has plenty to worry about this year…they will lose at least 4-5 games..its gonna happen…and Meyer knows it. Gators have put tons of players in NFL, just not quarterbacks. No Pro aspiring QB is going to UF and run that offense as it doesn’t translate. But, that type QB isn’t the one CUM wants anyway. There is not a National Championship in College Football so how can that be the measure? The measure is SEC Championships and since CMR wins as much as anyone we will keep him, thank you.

Ponce- Hines was a selfless college player who took it for the team and moved from WR to TB to QB for the team. If he could have stayed at WR the entire time he would have been one of the best. Hershel was a great pro, just not like we expected. He got pounded for 5 years in the USFL and he is still one of the best all purpose yard guys of all time.

Ponce DeLeon

March 2nd, 2010

Dawglasville, you might add that Hines was voted the dirtiest, but no one is comparing him to Spikes. Hershel was not a great pro. He got pounded in the USFL because he was too greedy to stay for his whole time at UGA.

It is not my approving, it is the NFL that doesn’t like your QB’s. They don’t and won’t like Brantley because he won’t be taking the ball under center and he won’t be running a pro type offense that develops the reads and throws they want in the NFL. Doesn’t make Brantley a bad QB, heck he might be the best QB in College next year, but the NFL won’t like him high in the draft. And yes, we will keep CMR and we will beat the Gators again soon but it isn’t about beating the Gators, it is about the body of work. CMR compares with anybody you want to compare him with even the great CUM.

The eye gauge was pretty bad and if Spikes were a normal civilian, he would be in jail.

With that being said, when UGA jumped in Florida’s endzone 2 years ago, they took this game to another level. I personally loved the endzone dance even if we’ve had to pay for it two fold the last two years. But I also concede that we probably deserve any cheap shots that we get from it as well. The way I look at it is this: All the great rivalries have had cheap shots in them( Steelers vs. Raiders, Bears vs. Packers, Miami vs. FSU etc.). I personally wish Mark Richt would grow a pair and own up to the fact they he meant to jump in Florida’s endzone and if given the chance would do it again. Florida deserved it after all the years they intentionally ran up the score on opponents especially UGA. They made no apologies for it so why should we? I think the players would respond positively to it, I really do. I want UGA to play with a swagger, like good teams do, instead of playing like a bunch of scared pussballs like they have the last 2 years vs. Florida. If Spikes puts his hands in your facemask then bite his fingers and I’ll guarantee he won’t do it again. Because I can assure you, if he pulls that crap in the NFL he’ll get knocked the hell out.

Speaking of crying, I’ll do some. Does anyone remember the game during Quincy’s junior year when Donnan installed the option and Florida could not stop it? That game a Gator hit Quincy very late after a pass and almost knocked him out of the game. It definitely looked like one of those “trade the 15 yards, but make the QB hurt” deals. It worked. He got hurt and he had to stop running the ball. As time goes on it just blends into those 17 losses out in the last twenty years. Like the year Shockley was out. I’ll admit, that is crying but it just seems like a nice vent. They have had the better team and program over the last 20 years. Hopefully that wheel will come back around sooner than later.

Not an excuse that should be accepted…even against UGA. Character and sportmanship should always rule in all aspects of life and the football field with thousands of fans watching is evan more paramount for proper behavior. All the more so since the game should not promote violence other than proper tackling techniques. That said…if it was bound to happen…better against a school that does not care about building up its students (see Jan Kemp, Physical Education test scandal, or even their lapse of getting a promised insurance policy for a returning player that rejected NFL overtures) than a school that actually attempts to educate its young men at far more than simply 12 Saturday’s per year for four or five years.

Amen to Karl Childers’ first post! Also, he has always been a classless, smack-talking thug, and he should have been called for a penalty after his opening tackle on Moreno 2 years ago. A great hit/play, followed by about 10 seconds of laying on top of him, while head-butting, spitting and gyrating during a serious smack-talk performance. One of many calls we didn’t get, by the way, as we were sent a message by the refs for the celebration the year before. Anyway, I don’t recall tebow lecturing/preaching about how awful spikes’ actions were on either of those occasions. Classless and clueless, win-at-all-costs mentality, which certainly starts with cum and filters down.

As for Richt owning up to the endzone dance, perhaps I should have said that I wanted Richt to say that he his glad that he did it instead of apologizing for it. It clearly worked. Preparation is what won the game, but the endzone dance no doubt gave the Dawgs the juice they needed to finish the Gators off. Florida is the dirtiest and most classless program in the SEC. They talk more jive and do more showboating in one game than most team’s do in an entire season. We have to respect their many wins, but we do not have to respect the way the conduct themselves both on and off the field. It is quite telling that Spikes even thought he could get away with the eye gouging incident. SEC refs have let these punks get away with murder the past two seasons. It might as well be written in stone in the rule book that excessive celebration penalties do not apply to the Florida Gators. If AJ Green so much as glances at the crowd its 15 yards. If Tim Tebow does a Gator Chomp or Dustin Doe showboats in to the endzone its just competitive young men caught up in the emotion of the game. Its absolutely laughable. Its no wonder that the punks on Florida’s football team think they can get away with anything. They can.

And how in the hell did Spikes get away with it? It was right there in plain view for all the world to see. Unbelievable.

I think this is the year that Meyer’s arrogance finally catches up to him. Good luck with that leave of absence bro. Nobody else in the SEC is on a leave of absence. Tech’s new DC is a joke. He’s a great grandfather and everyone close to the UVA program agrees he should have been canned years ago.

Personally, I think CPJ hired this old man because he doesn’t plan on staying in the ghettos of Atlanta for much longer himself.

pookie,

I’ve been saying the same thing. Why on earth would Johnson hire a guy of such advanced age just so he has to go through the same process all over again in a couple of years? Johnson isn’t stupid. He realizes last season was the perfect storm and his best shot to succeed at Tech. He is aware FSU, Miami, Va. Tech and BC won’t remain down for much longer. He is aware that UNC is on the rise. Johnson is going to bolt first chance he gets within the next couple of years.

Cobbler, I think he has waited too long already to get a better offer. Unless he goes away from his high school offense, he has Tech as high as they will get and when Nesbitt is gone, he is toast.

Cobbler: You got the wrong coach leaving, in Florida, we see Mark Richt taking off before his record drops below .500. Our man Johnson is only getting started (2nd year), and this year recruits are his best yet. Watch those little doggies whine when he starts owning them, then they get to pee in the pants twice every year, when they play us and when they play my little techster buddies.

The thing about Spikes’ helmet gettin’ knocked off all those times, it’s not just the hard hits, it’s the fact that he intentionally wears a larger one so those ear-flaps don’t push into his ‘ear-bobs’ and ram the posts into Spikes’ neck. The deal is, whenever he’s on the sidelines – with helmet off – he wants to be sure that if the camera’s on him everybody gets to see his ‘ear-bling’. Those things have got to be $20,000 – that’s assuming they’re not fake – and God knows he couldn’t trust anybody at Florida to look after ‘em for him – I mean those guys steal from one another all the time – plus if he’s constantly puttin’ ‘em on and takin’ ‘em off he’s sure to get caught on camera, and how much of a wuss would that make him? Bound to have gotten at least one question from the NFL on that part.

So he leaves ‘em on and looses his helmet all the time.

Living here in orlando (behind enemy lines) I can not see any integrity or any morality come from Gainesville. These people cry foul when things dont go their way. These peoiple cry foul when their players get suspended for such a flagrant disregard and/or disrespect of the opposition. And now they are crying foul because they do not receive respect from others in the SEC and even around the country.
I been around this country and have heard the “I hate the Gators” so much where I wished I had a dime for every time I have heard that, I could own a good chunk of the third world countries.
From the low class players and coaches, to the no class fans, the Gators are in a league by themselves. There is no sense of decency, no morals, no integrity. The SEC was the best all around conference bar none. Sadly because of idiots like Spikes, and the rest of the Gators… the SEC has lowered its standing compared to other conferences.

I did it because my coach at Florida didn’t see anything wrong with that type of play. So I felt I could get away with it like I normally do. Just a couple of weeks later, I got away with attacking after the whistle a FSU player that was down. NOBODY caught it even though it was plain to see on the game tape. I suspended myself for Vandy because I was coming back from a hamstring injury and didn’t want to reinjure myself in a game that was meaningless.

The intent was there to take him out. Watch the replay. Cheap and bush to say the least.

Spikes’ eye gouge isn’t what is going to keep his thug butt out of the NFL. It is his lack of speed and complete inability to co ver a tight end in the NFL.
And I. for one, am sick of hearing about Tebow. I can’t wait til some NFL practice squad reject lights his cheesy white a$$ up. What a complete punk.

I’d like to meet spikes one day and let him try to gouge my eyes, I’d show him some south florida sidewalk justice, what a disgrace for him to join the NFL, much less be involved in the SEC. alumn: all the more reason to stay.he was a good player but lacks almost no coverage skills. the three years he played all i ever seen him do was tackle which he did better than anyone on the team but i don’t remember ever seeing him cover a pass receiver. brooking was all pro with the falcons and was cut because of his failure to cover in the playoffs and it lost the game. would have learned more in one year under current coaches than he did in three under willie. i’m think he was overcame buy the mighty dollar.

Brandon Spikes will be on America Most Wanted in a few years after his woefully insufficient speed keeps him from any success in the NFL. Ya just don’t know any slow linebackers in the NFL and Spikes won’t be the one who makes it. Not to mention his injury factor. All that coupled with another Florida boy without guidance from stronger people will doom his adult life.
