NFL teams making Brandon Spikes answer for Ealey eye gouge

Former Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes faced an obvious question from potential employers at the NFL Combine.

The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun says the question went like this:

“Why did you try to gouge a player’s eyes out?”

The player, of course, was Georgia freshman running back Washaun Ealey.

And Spikes’ answer to the NFL teams that asked the question?

“I told them it’s the SEC, Florida-Georgia is a big rivalry,” Spikes said, according to the Sun. “There were a lot of emotions going on. Both sides were taking shots at each other. But that’s why I suspended myself. That’s not the way the game is supposed to be played.”

The apparent attempted eye-gouging –-  cameras caught Spikes sticking his fingers inside Ealey’s facemask — occurred during Florida’s Oct. 31 victory over Georgia. Spikes was suspended for one half of the following game by Florida coach Urban Meyer, and the player extended his own suspension to a full game because, he said at the Combine,  “I didn’t want young guys to think that was the right way to play the game.”

You don’t know too much about SEC football, huh? Auburn owns UF and I think Bama took them to the wood shed and showed the Gators what smash mouth football is all about a couple months ago. Bama completely dismantled UF in the SECCG.

I love Auburn and we don’t even have to try and gouge someones eye out to whip Gators under CUM 100% of the time. Now that I think of it we don’thave to call time outs when we are up by 4 touchdowns and we don’t run up and down the sidelines waving a towel like a third grader or cry like a baby when we lose. Or I should say if we ever did lose we wouldn’t cry which we don’t to the cheatin gators.

Spikes is simply a scumbag, and Urban isn’t any better.Yes, these things happen at the bottom of piles on occasion, but this was out in the open, showing that Spikes has no class. It will be funny to see Urban cry next year when he loses 3 games. He will probably quit for real (what a joke that was this year) in the next 12-16 months anyway. Kind of reminds me of Miami a few years ago……

We really can’t judge Spikes’ character because of our bias. I kind of liked his ability and his passion for the game, but there was times when Spikes to it too far.

The real question we should ask ourselves is what did we do about it? Spikes danced on top of Moreno after he was down, then attempts to rip Ealy’s eyes out. I don’t know about you guys but if anything like that was done to any of my teammates, I would be the first to go after Spikes or one of their guys. Yet we did absolutely nothing about it. Football is mental as well and when your team is getting beat up, you have to fight back.

Because they (dawgs) were trying to rip his helmet off the whole game??? With his head in it??? There was alot of dirty things going on in that game and none of it was one sided like UGA fans would like you to believe.

Spikes is a real good guy, and he shouldn’t have done that. And he apologized, and Ealey accepted, and Spikes was suspended. Perhaps we should all move on.

Besides, in the NFL, I can’t imagine that they’re real worked up about seeing aggression from a middle linebacker.

The shameful thing, besides the senseless act of Spike’s retaliation itself, is it has allowed the Bulldogs to focus (sorry about the play on words) on that one play and be outraged instead of being outraged at the sorry job their team and the coaching staff did that day. I remember 07 when the Dogs danced in the endzone and while I didn’t like that classless act, I still remember how angry I was at our team after that game. Yes, UGA was the better team that year, but we layed down late in that game and embarrased ourselves with OUR play and there’s never an excuse for that.

I found it revealing that the UGA player even said it was not a big deal and it’s time to move on. Personally, I didn’t like what Spikes did and felt like he should be suspended and punished, but I think alot of Ga fans can learn from that (Ga) player. I think Spikes is still paying the price as I’m sure his draft stock was not helped and by the fact that a guy who is almost clinically shy would have to be answering questions at the combine about it.

I was there and also watched the replay about 5 times and I will tell you that neither side should be proud about some of the stuff going on in that game. You could tell from that very first play that the UGA players were sending a “message” that they were not going to be intimidated .And some of the UF players, like Spikes, went overboard in their response. That was the dirtiest played game I’ve ever witnessed and both side deserve equal blame.

Meyer should have suspended him for an entire game.

I’m not sure what worse, the eye gouging, or Urban Meyer’s lack of discipline.

What goes around comes around.

Revealing the character of Florida as his defensive Captain, and revealing the LACK of character, when he’s getting beat, to try and eye gouge an opponent to level the playing field.

If I recall, the UGA players had hit him so hard his helmet had come off 5 or 6 times.
