Fox trumps Richt, makes SportsCenter “Top 10″ with trick shot

(Updated 10 a.m. Monday)

You might recall the basketball trick shot that Mark Richt made last month, garnering more than 36,000 views on YouTube. It was a nifty enough shot: a one-handed, no-look, backward free throw.

Now, Mark Fox has topped that effort, making ESPN SportsCenter’s “Top 10″ plays-of-the-day Saturday with a trick shot of his own.

Here’s the back story. Connor Nolte, a Georgia basketball walk-on who is sitting out this season after transferring from Furman, has a blog called  passersremorse.com. He records trick shots and posts one on his blog on the day of each game. Richt’s was featured last month.

Saturday’s featured shot was Fox making what Nolte called “quite possibly the hardest game day trick shot yet”: Shooting from the stands behind the basket at Stegeman Coliseum, Georgia’s basketball coach bounced the ball off the top of the shot clock and through the net.

He made the shot twice.  “Back-to-back jack,” he said.

The folks at ESPN got word of this, contacted Nolte on Saturday night and got his permission to air the video on the 1 a.m. SportsCenter. Fox’s shot led off ESPN’s countdown of the plays of the day at No. 10.

UPDATE: Upon further review, ESPN apparently decided Fox’s feat was even more impressive.  Monday morning’s edition of SportsCenter moved the trick shot up to No. 4 on the Top 10 plays of the weekend. The real significance here, of course, is more national exposure for the Georgia basketball program.

—————————

G-Day time, TV: UGA announced that the G-Day intra-squad football game on April 10 will start at 2 p.m. and be televised on CSS.  Georgia’s home baseball game vs. Ole Miss on that day will be moved to 4 p.m. to accommodate fans who want to attend both events.

—————————-

Speaking of Mark Fox, here’s his latest Twitter post from this morning:

“My 9yr old was asked if he had 2 go 2 college @ Florida or GaTech where would he go. His answer:  ‘I’d become a fireman & not go to college’”

—————————-

Home-court advantage, indeed: To revisit a theme I wrote about last week . . .  Georgia’s men’s basketball team has won its past five Saturday home games, beating Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Alabama and, yesterday, Florida.

The Bulldogs are 4-0 this season against SEC East opponents at home, compared with 0-5 against them on the road. The Dogs will go for a home sweep of the East on Wednesday when Kentucky comes to Athens.

It is nice to see the Bulldogs basketball team playing so hard under Coach Fox. Maybe in a couple of years he will have this team back in the NCAA’S. Still, I bet no SEC team wants to play them in the conference tourney.

With almost everyone back, including two projected first round picks in 2011 in Leslie and Thompkins, and the addition of an explosive scoring guard in Gerald Robinson, UGA will easily make the NCAA tourney next year and could challenge for the conference title. Laugh now haters….we’ll see who is laughing at this time next year.

That poster @12:32 who wandered if UGA has a basketball team must have just been uninformed dude and not a usual sarcastic critic since we have beaten Tech, Fla , Tenn and Ala in BB this year. Read the papers man or watch ESPN. Coach Fox has produced a pretty good team, way above expectations and his 9 year old is smarter than most of the gators and techies on these blogs.

No two ways about it, Mark Fox is the real deal. A record of success, and to have these guys playing the way they are, what an improvement over (no slight intended) Dennis Felton. Fox has all the makings of an NCAA champion coach. The next two years should bring UGA to the point of being a real contender, because Coach Fox loves to recruit.
Yep, the future looks bright! Congratulations to all the DAWGS and to the coaching staff.

As I understand it, we need these remaining games to, at least be eligible for the NIT…then win, at least one in the SEC tourney. Of course if we ‘run the table’ in Nashville….

Got say it was nice hearing whichever of the talking – ex-coaches – heads on ESPN yesterday, saying Georgia may, indeed, deserve to be in the NCAA field…that they had more ‘quality wins’ than most of the bubble teams. Regardless, this has been a way-positive season and if Thompkins decides to return for one more, next year shapes up to something truly special. Thank you Mark Fox for making Georgia basketball relevant and something to truly be proud of.

I am a long-time UGA season ticket holder and UGA graduate, born into UGA football. I try to support Coach Richt, but honestly, he has hired since December 20, 2000 the worst set of coaches on his staff of any coach in America. It is said that Brian VanGorder is a great coach, and honestly how can that be looking at the Falcons’ Defense ? The entire rest of the staff has been a failure.

It is my place to determine if posters to this blog, daily, are blindly trying to say that 1-3 vs the vols who have been horrible the last 4 years and 1-3 vs Florida the last 4 years too, along with 2-2 vs Kentucky and a loss to every other SEC East team the last 4 years, constitutes the best coach in The SEC.

Auburn Coach Richt has beat 4 years in a row. All that means is that Auburn has lost 4 more games than we have over the last 4 years. And, we’ve lost 14.

You have the right to say that Coach Richt is the best coach in The SEC all you want.

I also have the right to say that that does not begin to be the truth. He’s the 4th highest paid coach because the other 3 ahead of him in salary, are ahead of him in the Standings.

We’ve not been very good for 4 years now.

Our problems on Offense have been penalties, interceptions and fumbles. Showing Loyalty to his Offensive Coaching Staff, all coaching positions which they did not play themselves, Coach Richt stood pat with his Offensive Coaching Staff when it was obvious that he could get away with just replacing his college roommate on Defense. And, now we feature 3 freshmen quarterbacks.

I desire to see a change in some way shape or form on Offense. We have squandered tremendous talent on Offense, not recognizing who they are even looking at. They play favorites. They have lost to 8 teams who were not ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll in the Coach Richt 9 Year Era. They have not beat 1 single solitary Top 10 Final AP Poll team in a bowl game.

We have beat 3 Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in the Coach Richt Era. We have 3 wins in 11 such games against actual Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in the Coach Richt Era.

That hardly qualifies as the Best Coaching Staff in The SEC. We are not that in the Coach Richt Era. Maybe we wish we were. Running in here to blog that Coach Richt is better than Florida in the Coach Richt Era is total bullcrap in every imaginable measurement.

Paul Hewitt who has a 4-6 record vs UGA, is 21 games under .500 in his conference, and has his men’s basketball team at Georgia tek on NCAA Probation with an Academic Progress Rate of 914, limited to only 11 scholarships, is a failure in his 10 Year Career. Coach Richt is not a failure, but neither is he the Best, even the second best, in just his Conference in the same 10 Year Career either. Florida and LSU have better won/loss records than Coach Richt in the Coach Richt Era, and frankly now Alabama in the last 4 years has passed Coach Richt too. We are indeed the 4th best in our own conference.

10-10 the last 4 years in your own Division of your own conference will do that to you.

I am excited that we will clearly field our best Defense in 30 years this coming season and feature the 2 best kickers on 1 team in America as well. I will maintain the vigil that we must have a far better Offensive Coaching Staff than we have demonstrated. I believe that is supporting this program I have poured so many dollars into for so long, and I firmly believe too that you are not supporting our UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program to state that we are the Best in The SEC in the Coach Richt Era.

You are satisfied with this performance and think it better to lie about the state of the program, than to stand up and say you are not satisfied. We fired Jim Donnan for losing 13 games his last 4 years saying we wanted more. Coach Richt in his last 4 years has lost 14. This is not where I expected to be in the 10th year of the Coach Richt Era. It’s not. You are not being a good fan of the program to say that we in fact are the greatest in The Conference. It’s a total lie. 4th say that, and I will leave you alone, not before. I now return you to your lies from those who think that their lies are supporting, or worse yet, are true. Just as they say to you that I am not an UGA Bulldogs’ Football Fan; they’ve got a lot of damn gall.

Coach Richt Era of 10 years now this season :

36 Top 25 Final AP Poll teams we’ve played & won 17.

11 Top 10 Final AP Poll teams we’ve played & won 3.

12 games vs 3 teams in The SEC East the last 4 years & won 4.

If tickets are available at game time, I’d give each seat away to students for free. Also, if UGA isn’t going to sell out a game, it should make sure the TV viewable side of the court is full, not the one you can’t see, which seems to be the case.
