UGA names special-teams coaches, assigns player positions on defense (updated)

(Updated 9 p.m.)

ATHENS – Georgia coach Mark Richt has assigned special-teams coaching duties on the Bulldogs’ reconfigured staff, and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has assigned new positions to numerous defensive players.

– Coaches first: Richt said that Warren Belin will coach the kickoff-coverage team, Bryan McClendon will handle the punt return and block units, and John Lilly will coordinate special-teams meeting and practice schedules. All of those roles previously were handled by Jon Fabris, fired in December. Richt said Lilly will continue to coach the punt team and Tony Ball the kickoff-return team, as they did last season.

Georgia’s approach to kickoff coverage, as you know, has drawn much criticism the past couple of years.  Richt said Belin coached the unit for eight years at Vanderbilt. The Commodores ranked  No. 2 in the SEC and No. 29 in the nation in kickoff coverage last season, while Georgia ranked No. 12 in the SEC and No. 117 in the nation. In 2008, Georgia ranked 73rd nationally and Vandy 87th.

– Players next: Grantham disclosed some position changes as the Bulldogs transition from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4.

On the defensive line, he  said DeAngelo Tyson and Kwame Geathers will primarily play the new nose position, with Demarcus Dobbs, Abry Jones and Brandon Wood, among others, playing end. Grantham added that Wood and other ends also can play nose. (FYI: The position is referred to simply as “nose,” not nose tackle or nose guard, in the vernacular of Grantham’s defense.)

Grantham said Justin Houston, Cornelius Washington and Montez Robinson — all defensive ends last season — and Richard Samuel, a tailback last season, will play outside linebacker.  Akeem Dent, Darryl Gamble, Marcus Dowtin and Christian Robinson will be inside linebackers.

Grantham stressed that many players will work at more than one position and that there will be ongoing position changes.

“I think it’s important that players are flexible, that they can adjust and that they can play more than one position,” Grantham said.  “I believe it’s real critical for guys to learn more than one spot to allow you to get your best players on the field.”

Said Richt: “One of the things we want the players to understand is that they shouldn’t get too worked up about the depth chart . . . because our new coaches are still learning those guys  and there probably will be some moving around. . . . Just prove you’re a football player and we’ll get you in the right spot.”

Richt said Nick Williams, who moved from safety to linebacker early last season, will return to safety.

I’m with BuLLdawg about our running game. However, I do think the O-Line can run block (GT) but they never got the chance to practice it : (

As an armchair QB, it is easy for me to say RUN THE BALL from my view in the stands or on the couch. I know SEC Ds are lot more stout then GT’s, but dang that was sweet to see us slam it up their belly.

Also, by have slow drives with the running game, it would allow the D to t-off when they are on the field….Basic Football 101.

I hope to see a lot of running on April 10.

BuLLdawg is absolutely on. Georgia has to be one of the best running teams in the nation if we are going to win the NC. We’re capable of doing it, but I don’t think CMB will committ to the running game. BuLLdawg, excellant observation about the number of carries our fullbacks have. These guys are weapons and we don’t use them enough.

What is CMR’s record when we have a back run for over 100 yds? Given that fact, that should be one of the offensive goals for every game. Why wouldn’t it be? Run the ball Bobo.

“It’s a whole lot different, especially with the footwork that Coach (Scott) Lakatos is teaching us,” Rambo said of working with his new defensive backs coach. “Most of the people in the NFL run the same thing as Coach Lakatos is teaching us. It’s a whole different footwork thing from Coach Martinez.”

And not to bash Willie Martinez, but here’s how Branden Smith discussed learning that new footwork:

“Backpedaling, coming out of the breaks, turning – those are different,” Smith said. “The footwork that Coach Lakatos is teaching us right now, I’ve done it in high school, so it’s nothing new and it’s easier to learn.”

Good enough for high school and the NFL. Easier to learn. One day, somebody will explain to me what was going on with the defensive staff over the past three seasons.

Love that Belin’s special teams were ranked #2 in the SEC last year.

Now we see a little more of the genius of the Belin hire.

Also, love the DE’s moving to linebacker. Tall, big and fast.

Like Samuel moving to Outside LB.

Why have we not gone ahead and hired BuLLdawg as our Head Football Coach? I don’t understand how we can miss such a talent right here in our own backyard. I especially like his insightfulness in concluding that Coach Bobo makes all the decisions about who plays on the offense and apparently that Coach Richt (whom BuLLdawg claims to like) has nothing to do with those decisions. The more I read by BuLLdawg the more I’m convinced he’s either the next Head Football Coach at UGA or that he’s an idiot. I think I now know the answer, but I’ll let what actually happens reveal that answer.

BTW, I am aware that BuLLdawg is not the only one on these blogs that thinks he knows more about football than the football coaches. When you really think about that, don’t you find that to be at least somewhat amazing?

AltamahaDawg

bruce, in all areas except KOs…., punting, punt returns, PAT, FG, UGA was top of near the top in the conference. Those squads are staying with the same guys. Is that not a good business to be near the top in most categories? Wouldnt a good motto also be, if it aint broke, don’t fix it?

What has changed is the guy coaching the one area that was a problem. (and the problem is overblown).

The term “special teams” is a pretty broad category of several diverse squads. Why would one guy be in charge of it? Why would one guy know more collectively about placekicking, recieving a football, running behind blockers, and tackling, than the assistant coaches that actually work with those individual skills everyday?

OldDawg

As my choosen moniker indicates, I am indeed an “old dawg”..thus, I am also retired with lots of free time on my hands! As an avid college football fan and more specifically an extememly avid fan of all things UGA, and yet more specifically again…the UGA football program! As a somewhat knowlegable fan…I will be the first to admit that i know very little about the intricasies of actually designing and implementing an actual “gameplan”…making adjustments during an actual game, and calling the “right” plays in a matter of seconds……while the whole time the “other” teams coaches…well paid and often just as knowlegable as our coaches are doing the same thing! I am rambling a bit…but my point is…buLLdawg and others of his ilk on these bolgs know no more about the intricasies osf the game than I do!
If he did he would be making 3 to 4 million a year to coach a top tier team! He has not…does not….and will not!

The easiest thing in the world to do is “monday morning quarterbacking” and/or quote specific statistics and reasons for failure AFTER the fact!

BuLLdawg….there is a counter fact or reason for almost every “fact” or statistic that you offer…copy and paste here…over and over and over! As an avid UGA fan and former season ticket holder of 27 years…before health reasons made the 220 mile one trip to the games difficult at best! I also gave much more than the minimun contrubution required to UGA during those 27 years in order to keep my seating priorty!

I say all that to say this….buLLdawg…your act is tired…very tired…and I as most others have long since been scrolling past ll your drivel! You ask many questions…let me point out just a couple of examples….trust me..there are many! Ask Ealy why he did not start sooner and play more…idiot! He himself addressed that publically….he had a difficult time learning the offense and more specifically “blocking assignments! Our OL has had an unblievable number of injuries the last 3 years…some career ending….thus the same OL starting 5 were juggled constantly…only toward the end of last season did the OL jell and strt to play as a “unit”! Idiot! I could go on and on as you do…but I wont!

IMHO…CMR’s biggest mistake was waiting at the very lest one year…probabbly 2 to make changes on his defensive staff! Loyalty “bit him in the rear”! He/we as a program paid the price! There is also a legitimate argument that loyalty can/is most times rewarded….I offer Coach Beamer at VT as an example here…check his record at VT for his first few seasons!

Now…..a new season awaits us….many exciting and necessary changes have been made! I for one choose to embrace the future of CMR’s future as “OUR” head football coach! I am positive and excited!

CMR is the best football coach UGA has ever had…his record proves it….and while we must accept the fact that UGA is probabbly a top 15 program…knocking on the door of consistantly being a top 10….we must accept the relity…like it or not…that at present we are in the SEC…toughest conference in America..and UF and Bama are at least top 5 programs….sooo while our schedule is easier than it has been the last few years…it is still difficult…and ANY college football fan that knows that to win the “ultimate prize” requires a lot of luck….examples..Mt Cody blocking 2 low trajectory field goals to beat Tn….LSU playing for the championship `ONLY becuase 3 other teams lost games they should have won…thus allowing them to play for and win a Chmpionship with 2 losses….USCe missing a short field goal against the hated Gators…etc, etc….CMR WILL bring UGA the championship we all crave so badly!

In the meantime fellow Dawgs…us loyal Dawgs will continue to experience a little piece of heaven on earth at every opportunity…that being football Saturdays in Athens! We will have success…we will win lots more than we lose…and we WILL enjoy the hoisting of the Crystal Ball!

Go DAWGS and THWGT!

Not sure where the stats that UGA was 12th in the league in KOs last year. By the official SEC stats they were 8th. 4.4 yrds off the top spot. Slightly better than Alabama fwiw.

I think the SEC uses a different standard than some of the national stats.

Altamaha, hope you are right. I sort of trust CMR to make right decision and the next game I win as football coach will be my first. In my business, I look around at who is the most successful and do what they do. I think most successful teams have one guy to over see the Special Teams play. From the outside looking in this seems like a hodge podge and we are trading a defensive position coach for a great special teams specialist. I think a special teams coach who is great would be more valuable in terms of wins but we will see. I feel like a fan of one of those pop up games where we beat down one problem and create another.

Bulldawg you are so right. we need a new OC. He is too predictable and he can’t coach QB’s. Stafford survived on talent alone and with a good OC he would have been better. I hope the offense gets better very quick. This years G-Day game has to be more intense and we have to look like we know what’s actually going on. Last years game was a joke and it showed in the first game. There is no room for excuses from Bobo this year. I think he said after the Okla. St. game it was his faught that the offense wasn’t ready. If they are not ready for the second game this year, I think he needs to be fired and CMR should assume the duties until and great OC is hired and this cannot take as long as it did to hire a DC. For some strange reason we are not signing the big name recruits on the offensive side of the ball. We are losing out to the other powerhouses in the SEC.

Well, actually he did just appoint one guy to oversee the special teams. Lilly. Fabris used to. That doesnt mean that Lilly will personally teach the seperate skills of kicking, catching, snapping, tackling and blocking though. Not sure about the “great teams” that do that. I sort of doubt it. I don’t know that would be at least. I think they do exactly what we do, appoint a guy to co-ordinate it all. Meyers does it himself, but he isn’t out there literally coaching all the skills, I dont think. (and on average hasnt been any better on ST than any other SEC team except very recently which I attribute to being very deep in LB types. They had em, we didnt).
