Colt McCoy had big praise for UGA’s Aaron Murray

I know you don’t need any convincing that Georgia’s quarterback competition will be a hugely interesting story line of spring football practice. But, just for the record, ESPN’s Joe Schad includes it as one of his Top 10 Story Lines to Watch in spring football nationally.

To be precise, it comes in at No. 5 on Schad’s list posted today on ESPN.com:

5. Georgia Quarterback Competition: (Georgia begins March 4)

Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy once told me Georgia redshirt freshman Aaron Murray was one of the most impressive players he’s ever seen. Murray and classmate Zach Mettenberger each have a shot to beat out athletic junior Logan Gray. Murray is a complete prospect. Mettenberger is a pocket-passer with a howitzer arm.

So McCoy told Schad that Murray is one of the most impressive players he’s ever seen. That sort of fuels the anticipation for G-Day, doesn’t it?

Schad’s No. 1 story line to watch in spring football,  by the way: Florida QB John Brantley replacing Tim Tebow.

An interview with Aaron Murray.

List of UGA players who will be sidelined or limited in spring practice.

UGA ranks ahead of UNC — in basketball, of all things.

Ask a Tech fan and they will tell you Aaron couldn’t start for Armstrong State. I to have been told by friend of the program( a Bulldog club president that talks to Bobo) That he his the real deal. He has a great arm, field vision and can’t run it like a scat back. It’s going to be fun.

The criticism leveled at UGA fans for being disloyal during or after a loss is simply not true. I was at the Alabama game in 2008, I was at the KY game in 2009. In both games, the stands were full till the end. Did some fans start leaving in the last minute of the game? Sure. But the majority stayed and cheered for their team.

Murray IS the real deal. I personally know people on the team, and I’m telling Murray is for real, but don’t count out Mett. They tell me he’s got a stronger arm than Stafford…STRONGER! Spout off all you want to Gator and Tide fans…but I’d be scared if either of these guys was about to start for UF or Bama.

can everyone tell spring football is just around the corner. I can tell by the pre spring noise from the ladies in Athens..every year about this time puppy fans start talking that NC crap, and all the talk about how bad UF will be and how bad the puppies are going to beat the Gators..John Brantley is a head and shoulders better QB than either of your rookies..we won’t even mention Logan he sucks, and just like last year UF will win the SEC East and kick the puppies ass in Jville–maybe the puppy fans will stay at least till the 4th quarter but I doubt it. The uga football team is a second tier sec team..face it now because as you know you’re looking at another 8-5 year at best.

Giving up turnovers and getting a drive that can kill the clock have been problems. 5+ min drives that kill the clock were trade marks of the early CMR teams but UGA can now only produce one against GT and Vandy.

When was the last time UGA had a 6min drive to open a half against Florida like Bama did?

Murray is the next McCoy, Sexton, (or for that matter majority of the FSU QBs this decade) a dual threat QB who will provide moments of greatness but can not win it all. Further UGA only has 1 RB that maybe top SEC RB material in a pro style offense in the SEC with Washaun. King would be 4th string at Bama. Texas other problem the past few years has been that Vince Young is gone and they have no top RB. UGA is beginning to look alot like Texas.

UGA will utiliize the F backs far more this year than they have in many years or maybe …ever.
UGA will utilize their tight end ( s ) far more than they have in years.
UGA will play a very agressive, attacking style of D …………..like they have not played since BVG was the D co ordinator.
The UGA QB with AM will be far more mobile than it has been since DJ was here.
THE UGA QB with Zack M. will be as accurate as MS EVER was ……….but smarter and more TEAM driven.
THE UGA QB with Logan Gray will be far more athletic and dangerous on the corners than over the last few years.

With these twists, AJ Green and Chris Durden, Wooten, and Israel Troupe and Tavarres King and Marvleous Marlon Brown will be far more effective.
The UGA backs will be seasoned and self confident and they will be the cornerstone to it all.
THE UGA punting/kicking game will be # ! in the nation and will cement the entire deal.

UGA ought to win 9 or 10 and win the East. Florida will lose to someone else in the SEC …………..UGA needs to put their ( UF’s) second loss on them in 2010.

2010? A fun year. 2011? A fun year. 2012? Another fun year.

Otto 2007 is the last time. They actually had a good drive going in 2009, but Joe put one up for grabs and that Gator D grabbed it. If you want to ask a real question, ask what happened after the first quarter of Ok State, and before the 2nd quarter of Auburn? Taht is the lost season for sure.

gatorbait 17-3,

Everyone on here understands that Florida has won 17 out of the last 20. I’ve been around long enough to have seen it the other way around from 1964-1989 it was 19-7 UGA. We would go to Jacksonville KNOWING we would win. Things change and go in cycles. The series is competitive and fun.

Try to show some class and stop with the 17-3 gatorbait crapola.

Murray’s the starter, Mettenberger is the clipboard-carrier, Gray is on the punt return team and “hands” team. The points about “smarter than Stafford” are good ones.

DawginLex the operant word in your response is “brain” that being said the UF/UGA game is hardly competitive..you seem like the most lucid puppy poster in a while. I agree with your statement regarding the cyclical nature of the series–I was in the stands in 80 when Lindsey broke my heart–Florida goes to Jax every year with the attitude that they cannot be beat by georgia, period and the fact is FL has better athletes that’s a fact and that’s why we will continue the domination for the forseeable future..you guys will be back on top one day, but it’ll be another 5 or 6

The UF/UGA game under richt;

2001-florida by 17
2002-Florida by 7
2003-florida by 3
2004-UGA by 7
2005-Florida by 4
2006-Florida by 7
2007-UGA by 12
2008 and 2009 florida lopsided

I’d call that pretty competitive until 08 and 09. The challenge is not talent wise. The challenge is mental, absolutely 100% mental. Does Georgia believe they can win? Does Grantham bring a change in mindset?

dale,

Gray was the 2nd string guy because the other 2 were redshirted. Mett wasn’t ready to read defenses and Murray was rehabbing from injury.

If Murray had been healthy, I believe he would have played a lot last year. Richt could have played him but it would have been dumb to blow a year with him not 100% healthy. He gambled on Cox and it cost him. All indications were that Cox was going to be ok.

My wife and I got a chance to meet Murray after the Vandy game last year. I introduced her to him and told her he was our next starting QB. He said “If I am lucky enough to earn the coaches approval, then I will be the QB next year.” I was immediately impressed with his answer, the kid seems to be humble and confident with himself. I think the future is bright for the Dawgs in the coming years!!!

DenverDog, Either way the drive ended. UGA has depended on atleast 1 big play for a driver over 50 yards. It is the same story big play or turn over trying for the play.

‘07 UGA also had a top level back and was using him. Th RB depth chart is very thin.

We heard the FBs were going to be used more last year. We also heard Logan was going to have a package of plays. I was diappointed in both.

I can hardly believe some of the comments I am reading on here. Many are annointing Aaron Murray as this great QB who is going to do this and do that and win this and win that. Folks…he hasn’t even secured the starting job yet! What if he’s not even starting on his own team! Gonna be hard to win all these games and championships when you’re sitting on the bench! I would think that he would be the favorite to be the starting QB but that’s ALOT of pressure to be putting on this young man when people talk like that even before he has taken a meaningful snap in college ball. And not just college ball, but SEC college ball. Some of these UGA fans need to power down their expectations and give it a season or two!

Truth is the defense should be better than last year, and that is whats going to determine how good we are this year. As far as the offense and the QB situation, if you look at it, all three are inexperienced, Gray being a junior yes, when he got playing time he didn’t do nothing great in my eyes and personally a guy that returns punts, shouldn’t be a QB(no disrespect hes a good athlete, but in my eyes not a QB). Murray should get the job being the more complete QB and the more accurate of the two, but well see.

otto,

I know it is hard to judge kids and push all the right buttons. That is one reason I wish he would go back to calling plays so he is more “in the trenches”.

The 2004 UT game was the biggest ddissappointment to me. Shockley clearly needed to play a lot that day and Greene was just having a bad day. No shame just play the kid who will help us win. Playing auburn again might not have resulted in anything any different than the first time but that team with those seniors deserved to be in the Dome and I felt like we were undercoached that day in Athens.

Come on spring ball! Hey Dog Nation things could be a whole lot worse we could be UF and wondering when our coach will be released from rehab and how his new coaching staff will jell..we could be Bama that is still awaiting the ruling on their appeal of the NCAA sanctions that would void 20+ wins from 05-07..while it won’t affect the current roster or coaches..he can’t help but be a huge distraction. UT has a new 1st time SEC coach and coaching staff and while I think CDD is a good hire, well time will tell. USC still has a lot of holes to fill , so with a new DC and scheme as well as our returning talent we are ahead of the curve compared mid year last year..keep your hopes high but expectations reasonable…we should be better but by how much will be determined on the field…God I love college football.

Can Murray be much better than Matt Stafford was out of high school? How long did it take Stafford to distance himself from Joe T and Joe Cox? I believe Murray is great BUT, we are talking about the SEC. And if he were that much greater than Cox and Gray he would have played last year when they struggled. Come on people. Get real. We are going to have some serious growing pains next year and the next. Sure we may win some we wre not expected to but our O will be inconsistent!

DawginLex, I can forgive CMR for sticking with a Sr QB who went on to become the winningest QB. I also remember Penn Wagers and crew being Boo’d off the field more openly and loudly than any time to date in Athens.

DJ was clearly a bad choice when you have a QB aleady in that will go down as one of the school’s best.

I do agree I want Bobo coaching the QBs and CMR calling the plays in the trenches, and doing the film work.

UGA was in the running for National Titles with CMR calling plays, Bobo at QB coach and a hard nose DC. Hopefully we see the team go back in that direction.

Sorry I have nor commented earlier in the week, but I have just now stopped laughing about the 2011 national championship talk. Mark (as in Richt) my words, as long as Richt is the head coach, you will never win a national championship, that is unless you count women’s gymnastics. 7 wins in 2010 would be a great season, and looking at the schedule, maybe 8-9 in 2011, and that is the BEST you can expect. Richt does less with more than any big time coach in the NCAA.

All right UGA fans, the rest of us SEC fans give up, you’re going to win it all this year, no doubt.

Your quarterback, whoever it is, will be All-America, even though he has NEVER TAKEN A SNAP in college.

Your OC will suddenly, this year, figure out how to put together consistently good game plans. Bobo becomes the Nat’l Ass’t Coach of the Year.

Instead of having the WORST TURNOVER RATIO in college football you will suddenly have the BEST.

Instead of leading the league in dumb-a$$ PENALTIES you will now have the fewest.

Your DEFENSE, with virtually all new starters and a new DC will be top 10.

Your Head Coach, will devise a new motivational ploy each week, including the end zone celebrations, blackouts, Grambling helmets to achieve that important psychological edge.

Yeah, the rest of us are all fighting for second. 2010 IS YOUR YEAR UGA, JUST LIKE ALWAYS.

1982-2001 AVERAGED 7 WINS PER YEAR
1982-2001 NO BCS CALIBER BOWL GAMES

2001-2009 3 SEC TITLE GAME APPEARANCES
2001-2009 3 BCS BOWL GAMES
2001-2009 5 TOP 10 RANKINGS

We are not a “storied” program in terms of national success. Coach Dooley won 200 games in 25 years=8 wins per year. Richt as won 90 games in 9 years=10 wins per year.

Dissappointed sometimes? Yes
Underachieved sometimes? Yes

Overall, Richt’s body of work is solid. I am not denying he needs to step it up in 2010 but to say “does less with more” is just not factual given UGA’s history.
