Colt McCoy had big praise for UGA’s Aaron Murray

I know you don’t need any convincing that Georgia’s quarterback competition will be a hugely interesting story line of spring football practice. But, just for the record, ESPN’s Joe Schad includes it as one of his Top 10 Story Lines to Watch in spring football nationally.

To be precise, it comes in at No. 5 on Schad’s list posted today on ESPN.com:

5. Georgia Quarterback Competition: (Georgia begins March 4)

Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy once told me Georgia redshirt freshman Aaron Murray was one of the most impressive players he’s ever seen. Murray and classmate Zach Mettenberger each have a shot to beat out athletic junior Logan Gray. Murray is a complete prospect. Mettenberger is a pocket-passer with a howitzer arm.

So McCoy told Schad that Murray is one of the most impressive players he’s ever seen. That sort of fuels the anticipation for G-Day, doesn’t it?

Schad’s No. 1 story line to watch in spring football,  by the way: Florida QB John Brantley replacing Tim Tebow.

An interview with Aaron Murray.

List of UGA players who will be sidelined or limited in spring practice.

UGA ranks ahead of UNC — in basketball, of all things.

I like the sound of that! If it matters, Buck Belue has often spoken very highly of Murray. I have a good feeling about this kid. 2011, with our schedule, and having a lot of returning pieces could be a year to remember. Of course, so could 2010…

Well , here’s where I START!

Does McCoy realize the mutts DO NOT have a clue who the starter will be?

This kid might be third string by mid season,
He also may be as dependable as Chipper ”The Hangnail” Jones.

Chinese firedrill starts in Sept.

Does Joe Cox have any time left ?

I agree with McCoy. Aaron Murray does it all:

-4000 yards passing–51 td’s passing
-900 rushing yards–12 td’s rushing
-2 state championships at toughest level–Div 5AAAAA
-MVP of Elite 11 QB Camp
-4.8 gpa, 1200 SAT

I can see Murray finisahing with a couple of National Championships trophies and SEC Championships.

Considering the source, high praise from Colt McCoy.

Not sure John Brantley is a big story.

He’s a 2B Div QB who Meyer has never trsuted to throw more than 10 passes against a single SEC opponent.

Brantley’s UNTESTED. Never played against tough competition. EVER.

Im sure Gator fans are worried sick because they continue to have the “we have to find a rb” storyline AGAIN this pre-season.

Boy, does that one get old.

Especially considering an UNTESTED QB could use a running game.

OUCH! Florida is in BIG TROUBLE.

Says something about the state of our education system when a person can score a 4.8 on 4.0 scale.

John Brantley Can't Throw Running Left...

February 23rd, 2010
9:09 pm

I don’t see Moody getting 200 more carries than 2009. He’s not proven to be that kind of take-a-pounding back. And if he gets that many touches, he’s bound to get injured.

I know Florida DREAMS about RAINEY SUDDENLY TRASNFORMING INTO PERCY, but it ain’t gonna happen.

Rainey averages 6.7 per carry, where Percy Harvin was more like Branden Smith, well almost, not qwuite as fast and productive.

Rainey–6.7 ypc
Harvin- 10.4 ypc

UGA’s Branden Smith- 12.2 ypc

florida’s running back situation will AGAIN be a big problem in 2010 and REALLY put the pressure on MR UNTESTED, 2B Division QB John Brantley.

About Aaron Murray

February 23rd, 2010
9:17 pm

With UGA’s running attack finishing up #1 in the SEC over the last 5 weeks, finally hitting on all cylinders, Murray will have plenty of time to develop.

UGA is getting 247 yards rushing per game, good for 5th in NCAA in last 5 games of 2009.

As long as Murray doesn’t throw more than 6 int’s, hits at about 60% accuracy on his passes, and get maybe 15-20 td’s, that should be all we need from him in 2010.

It’s important to note, John Brantley’s college experience has been against the weakest teams, Meyer has shown ZERO confidence in Brantley in the past, only letting him throw for more than 10 passes against the like of:
Charleston Southern
Troy
Florida International

Meyer wouldn’t even rotate Brantley into an SEC game and let him rip 12 or 15 passes in 2009.

Why? Brantley’s just not there.

In the SEC Champ game, Meyer only called 1 running play for his running backs in the ENTIRE GAME!

That’s nt a good situation.

Meyer has ZERO confidence in his RB’s, as the SEC CHamp game showed.

Whereas Richt is trustung his RB’s to win the games against top 10 teams like Ga Tech, and they are delivering.

No comparison.

Murray has run support, Brantley has ZIPPO.

Nice endorsement by McCoy. And yes, “Football Fan”, i do believe McCoy could be considered an evaluator considering the two are of the same mold for a football player of the same age roughly. Oh yeah, and they both play quarterback. If one player plays the same sport as the other, especially the quarterback position, i do believe he might know a tiny little bit as to evaluate another player. McCoy wasn’t a bad player himself, too. Just sayin’. But i’m really looking forward to seeing it happen on the field, which i truly believe will happen. Looking good, Dawgs. Sic ‘Em…

Yeah Bama Dawg is right. Where I come from (the same high school as David Greene I might add), you get an automatic 10 points added to any grade in an AP course. Therefore, it is possible for a GPA that is greater than 4.0. Even the Hope Scholarship takes the raw grade and adds 0.5 to it towards your GPA.

Back on point:

I’m excited for this season, much less spring ball. I hope we avoid the 2006 QB fiasco, and just settle on a number one after spring practice, whomever that may be. If our O-Line and running backs stay healthy, we shouldn’t have to pass it all that much. Just let Ealey and King carry the load.

On top of that, am I the only one that feels like we have a monster group of receivers? Everyone knows about Green, but why does nobody give credit to guys like Tavarres King and Rantavius Wooten? Not to mention Israel Troupe, Orson Charles, and Aron White. I think the quarterback will have an easy time next year considering all the talent that’s returning.

If Grantham can turn the defense into a force again, we might surprise some teams like we did in 2005.

Great news that McCoy thinks so highly of Murray.
Just a reminder that whoever gets the job will likely
endure a rough stretch. The worst thing that we fans
can do is be impatient and call for the next guy in line.
If there is any special confidence I have about CMR it’s
his choosing and handling of QBs. I hope the rest of
the fan base share that confidence. I really believe
they do but we are about to find out , that’s for sure.

Hey “Football Fan”, are you saying that Colt McCoy can’t say that someone is the most impressive player he’s ever seen because he isn’t a so called talent evaluator? I think he’s seen some impressive QB’s over the last few years and to say that he is more impressive than Bradford and others is a big statement.

I guess we should just go by those “talent evaluators” that tell us how great people like Ryan Leaf are going to be instead of guys that actually play the game…

I agree UGA will win the SEC East in 2010. Won’t be hard this year, no competition, Tenn way down, South Carolina good for 4th again, Florida lost 5 starters on offense, 7 on defense, 1 on special teams, and 6 coaches.

UGA will win the SEC East, might beat LSU or Bama, then play for it all.

Florida will go 5-3 in the SEC like Meyer is 40% of his Fla era.

Florida Gators = The New Notre Dame

Florida’s defensive staff is thin as spaghetti. Brantley is no Aaron Murray, Heater is no Charlie Strong. Florida couldn’t run the ball against Belin or the LB’s could not outackle Belin–Vandy’s LB Coach, now Georgia’s LB Coach.

Tenn–Lane Kiffin disaster will set them back for 2 years.

South Carolina can’t run the ball (#99 ranked), and can’t pass block (37 sacks). Lakotas DB’s shut South Carolina down in the Bowl game to 0 Td’s, less than Charlie Strong did against South Carolina.

Georgia:
#1 Trio of RB’s in SEC (King-Ealey-Branden Smith)
#1 WR’s- Wooten, Green–average 18 ypc
#1 TE- Charles and White both average 16+ pyc
#1 QB- Aarom Murray or Zack Mett
#1 Offensive Line- Averaging 247 yards rushing in last 3 games, only 11 sacks–all returning–3 deep at every position
#1 Punter–All American
#1 Kicker–20 of 22 field goals, 4 out of 5 from 50+ yards
#1 Defensive staff- Grantham, Lakotas, Belin, Garner
#1 Turnaround Head Coaches- Mark Richt & Grantham

Aaron Murray will definitely be the starting QB – he was the #3 rated QB in the nation coming out of high school in Florida. Florida begged him to come there but he didn’t like Urban’s weird offense which is not suited to getting the QB to the NFL. Tebow will be a 3rd rounder and a bench rider for a couple of years before moving on.

With Florida’s RB problems with fumbles, especially Rainey, of course Moody can’t protect the nall well either, no wonder Meyer only called 1 running play against Bama.

ckgator and Gatornation,

Yep. We notice it too. Those durn Georgia fans are the national champions of pre season talk.

The post at 8:55 took the cake when the poster “about Arron Murray” proclaimed that before he leaves he will win a couple of national championships. Not one national title but a couple of em.

All this for a kid who went something like 6 for 25 for 40 yards in his state championship game and I think 3 picks in that game. This kid is the next Ron Powlus in terms of being overblown.

Could turn out to be a decent qb but to hear dawg fans say it the kid has already won 2 national titles. My question is that if the kid is so dang good then why didn’t he win the backup job last year over the hapless Logan Young. And why is it a 3 qb race at all if he’s that good.

As for Colt McCoy I wouldn’t read anything into that. Did dawg fans think he would say something mean sprited and unclassy. Colt was just being classy and over complimentary of the young man. That’s all. He can’t anymore predict the kid’s future success or failure any more than I can pick next year’s super bowl winner. Or bcs national champion although I have a good bet it will be either us, Florida, or Texas.
