UGA ranks No. 6 in nation in football attendance
The University of Georgia ranked No. 6 in the nation in football attendance last season, according to figures released this afternoon by the NCAA.
Georgia averaged 92,746 per home game, selling out the season in Sanford Stadium.
Nationally, the NCAA said almost 48.3 million fans attended college football games last season –- 48,284,767 to be precise, down about 1 percent from the record 48.8 million in 2008. The decline was college football’s first in five years. The figures include all regular-season and post-season games in Divisions I, II and III.
The NCAA’s Top 10 in average home attendance for the 2009 season:
1. Michigan 108,933
2. Penn State 107,008
3. Ohio State 105,261
4. Texas 101,175
5. Tennessee 99,200
6. Georgia 92,746
7. LSU 92,489
8. Alabama 92,012
9. Florida 90,635
10. Nebraska 85,888
According to the NCAA figures, Georgia Tech ranked 40th in home attendance with an average of 51,584. That was an average increase of 4,095 over the previous season — the 12th largest increase in Division I, according to the NCAA.
The average attendance at Division I-A (now officially called Football Bowl Subdivision) games last season was 46,281, the NCAA reported. The SEC drew the most fans of any conference for the 12th consecutive year, with average home attendance of 76,288. That was down 556 per game from the SEC record set in 2008.
Including road and neutral-site games, UGA games were attended by more than 1 million fans in the 2009 season — 1,014,963 to be precise. That ranked 10th in the nation.

I don’t understand how come Georgia sports fans are so bad. Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania’s college teams all draw more than Georgia and yet they can also support their other sports teams. All of those states have WAY bigger college football fan bases than Georgia and yet they not only manage to support their college teams but their pro teams as well. I mean have the Tennessee Titans ever not sold out a game? Half the state of Michigan is unemployed and the Lions probably drew better than the Falcons and the Tigers almost drew 3 million fans not to mention the Red Wings and Pistons. This list just proves that Georgia is a terrible sports state. You support one team and that’s it. To be a good sports town/state you have to support more than 6 home games a year.

Ummm GoJackets, Athens is practically an exurb of Atlanta. Where do you think most of the students and fans come from? I grew up and have lived all of my life in Atlanta except the four years I attended UGA so I’m sure where you are coming from. We are speaking about the best atmosphere for college, and if you think that Midtown is better then Athens then you are being rather foolish. Even my good friends who went to Tech say how much of an idyllic setting Athens is for college and college football. Big business hangs in Atlanta but that is not the topic.

Both of my sons are at Auburn – my wife and I are UGA grads – we just couldn’t let our children get mugged/robbed/molested at the Trade School. I’ve had many former students attend Tech – they loved the experience and their degrees. I’m proud of both UGA and Tech, but I can’t put my kids on that crime riddled campus.

This is fantastic. A simple report on attendance sparks arguing amongst the faithful of schools throughout the southeast. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: we are fortunate to live in a place where college football is taken this seriously. As a Dawg fan who lives in Atlanta, I almost look forward more to the user comments than the actual story. I seriously don’t even mind the obligatory Bama and Tennessee fans who, for some reason, feel the need to remind us that they exist (as if we could forget).

Just goes to show you that Tech fans and Tech grads have more important things to do than set in the stands on a hot Saturday afternoon with a bunch of drunks (wait, that’s at Sanford stadium) and bark for “our team” and screaming and yelling for players who are only 18, 19, or 20 years old. From where I currently live, it seems like it is the red-neck thing to do – to have a pick-up truck with a big “G” on the front of it and those stupid little red and black flags hanging on the windows. Heck, about 95% of those folks likely couldn’t spell GEORGIA, but the sure love “them dawgs”.
It’s kind of sad that you can’t get 95K fans cheering on a great physics project or invention, but you can pack them in at UGA to watch some guy who barely made a 700 on a SAT run with a football across a goal line – the same guy who likely thinks that physics is some sort of disease.
No – I have much better things to do with my time – though I am a happy Tech grad from the late 80s.

This is so irrelevant. TCU garnered a little over 38000 fans per game last year, and played in a BCS bowl. Who cares about how many fans you have per game? The stats are skewed – the more fans the opposing team brings, the more fans you have at the game. That is where Tech struggles, filling up the seats reserved for fans from Wake, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina State, Miami, (who may have the worst fans in the NCAA) Virginia, etc…

#6 attendance with poor results on the field. Since fans support mediocrity, there is no reason to improve. So Tech, and maybe Ga State in the future, will be our only hope for conference champions in Georgia. Forbes magazine recently listed UGA as one of the most VALUBALE BRAND NAMES around the ENTIRE USA having to do with selling and promoting school merchandise,etc. This one factoid is what any school in the world desires. One hand washes the other, so to speak. It ALSO suggests that the OVERALL public perception about all that goes into making up the brand is desirable. In other wrods, money talks and smoke walks.
Now, with the top 6 status of filling seats in football, again, it is indicative of $$$$$ fan support and the overall perception of the direction of the school and the brand. Moneyt talks and smoke walks.

This is pointless…the larger the stadium, the higher the attendance. Simple as that.
And for all of you on here, who obviously have no clue about the geography of Georgia Tech and Atlanta (probably because you live in Hahira or Claxton), the recent crime stories in the news (1) did NOT occur on Tech’s campus and (2) did NOT involve students, faculty or staff. (Yes, I am discounting the nutjob with the sword…as that was clearly the case of a…well, nutjob.) In fact, it has been months since a student was the victim of any incident. And for the Georgia fans, I have heard my share of stories of break-ins, robberies and such in Athens over the years. What about the cab driver who robbed the drunk student that was in the news recently?

Bottom line is UGA’s # is 92,746, the amount of seats in the stadium is 92,746. If we had 200,000 seats we’d fillem all! UT avg. more than us only because their stadium is bigger they didn’t even sellout last year, even when Kiffin was labled as the second coming of Vince Lombardi. Tech fans just need to shut up. This person obviously did not go to school in Athens. There is absolutely no way in hell that the ATL is a better college experience. I love Atlanta, I’m from there, and plan to move back next year, but Athens is an unbeatable place to attend school. I live in Gainesville Florida right now and it is a cheap tawdry imitation of the music, culture, and general scene that Athens offered. Athens is actually the BEST reason to go to Georgia. One reason I’m convinced Gator fans are so ridic, Gainesville just doesn’t have as much to offer. Sorry, I love Athens and took that personally.

Being an urban university is nothing to be happy about. Look at the Atlanta TV news or read the AJC and just about, just about every week ow, around the Tech campus, are muggings and crime with guns, break ins,etc.
This is not tech’s fault …………it is the local Atlanta and State of GA. DEMOCRAT PARTY’s fault and The legacy of the Great Society, where we intended on giving stuff to deadbeats and thugs. A failure it is.
Urban crime is the result of tinkering by Dems. GT? Why, it stands for G un T oters, as far as the national preception of downtown Atlanta is. Too bad. Atlanta WAS a nice city in the 60s.

Predictable smack talk here but I would prefer to focus on the
fact this proves Georgia has no reason to merely “settle” for
anything less than the upper tier of college football.
Rivals often crticize us for high expectations but this just
proves how full of it they are. With the support and talent
in this state there is no real reason to expect anything less .
Support translates into money which translates into superior
facillities , all of which are important to recruiting. And that
is why is much as CMR is loved and respected by the fan base he
will be held to a high standard and must continue to be willing
to change as needed. Props on his new coaching staff but in the
future it would be wise to be just a bit more proactive.
The Dawgs have for the most part been in the upper tier under CMR’s
leadership but few fans would argue that the last couple of years
are troubling and a quick course correction is a must.
While national championships can be a bad baromoter because a
certain level of luck must accompany, SEC championships on the
other hand are a good baromoter of success . CMR has gotten us
there but failed to sustain us there. I believe the great second
chance has arrived and he will succeed. But the thing we Georgia
fans should take from this ranking is more concrete evidence that
we have every reason and right to expect a high level of success
and every reason to demand it given our support.

As a Dawg fan this whole premise is very misleading. The only game that I personally attended that was sold out with bodies in the seats was the UF game. Every home game had many empty seats in the upper levels and most games had entire sections in the corners of the upper levels completely empty. Granted we did sell those seats but many simply did not show up on game day and I am guessing they could not get a good enough price to sell them via a ticket broker or ebay. We probably averaged around 78 to 80,000 actually in attendance.

Florida’s defensive staff is thin as spaghetti. Brantley is no Aaron Murray, Heater is no Charlie Strong. Florida couldn’t run the ball against Belin or the LB’s could nto outtackle Belin–Vandy’s LB Coach, now Georgia’s LB Coach.
Tenn–Lane Kiffin disaster will set them back for 2 years.

Dawgbite, empty seat in the upper deck does not realy mean those folks aren’t in the stadium, especially the students. Unless squeezing 20 frat boys and thier dates in 12 seats has lost it’s charm in the past 25 years.
But even if that were not the case, the “premise” is a comparison of schools. It’s not misleading. You are talking about an entirely different and fairly subjective matter. (and wouldn’t that have to be taken into account at all the those other schools, bringing the comparison right back in line?)

South Georgia UGA Hick, I am not sure who shot him or mounted him. The state issues about 1500 licenses thru a lottery each year that I believe let’s you kill up to 4 (which I got 1 in my life before moving here). If you can believe it the tree huggers had them on the protected list until the early 80’s; now the state is over run with them. One thing I would agree on; UGA is a much cuter mascot and I was there the game after he was buried and was amazed at the reverence shown.
