‘What was it Coach Dooley used to say about a Saturday in Athens?’ Mark Fox asks

Athens – For three consecutive Saturdays, Georgia’s men’s basketball team has celebrated notable victories in Stegeman Coliseum — a 72-58 upset of nationally ranked Vanderbilt on Feb. 6, a come-from-behind 66-61 win over South Carolina on Feb.13 and a come-from-even-farther-behind 76-70 victory over Alabama yesterday.

“What was it Coach Dooley used to say about a Saturday in Athens?” coach Mark Fox asked after the latest win.

What Vince Dooley often said in the locker room after Georgia football victories at Sanford Stadium, longtime  sports information director Claude Felton recalled, was:  ”It’s great to be a Bulldog on Saturday night.”

(The same sentiment was contained in a letter that Dooley’s defensive coordinator, the late great Erk Russell, reportedly wrote to his players before the 1980 season. “There ain’t nothing like being a Bulldog on Saturday night –- after winning a football game,” Russell wrote.)

Anyway, Saturdays have been kind to Fox’s team this year.

Yesterday’s win over Alabama came after trailing by 13 points with 11:39 to play. The previous Saturday’s win over South Carolina came after trailing by 10 with 9:12 left.  The Feb. 6 victory over Vanderbilt came after trailing by eight with 15 minutes to play.

Go back two weeks before the victory over Vandy, and Georgia had another special Saturday in Stegeman, routing then-No. 8 Tennessee 78-63.

So the Dogs have won all four games they have played in Stegeman on Saturdays this season.

“We’ve had good Saturdays,”  Fox said.

By the way, Georgia has another home game next Saturday — vs. Florida.

Here’s the full story on the  rally against Alabama.

Here’s the story,  if you missed it, on the new face that will be put on Stegeman Coliseum for next season.

And for those who asked to see an artist’s rendering of what the renovated Stegeman will look like, you’ll find one here.

Yeah but how did Georgia play this past Wednesday? I believe they got drilled by Tennessee. Let’s pretend that never happened. I’ve never seen fanbase so happy to have a 4-8 record in the terrible SEC.

I guess the blogger “Why?” hasn’t been to North Campus on a football Saturday in Athens. There’s almost as much trash on the ground as there is in the stands.

The younger Coach Dooley will love kicking that tail every other year in Athens. With his father cheering for him… You know, the only coach to ever lead UGA to a national title. Thanks again to the good folks at Minish Pontiac. Herschel and Buck in their TA’s.

Is even one of UGA’s starting BB players enrolled in a legitimate degree program? Not that that many of UGA’s degrees are worth the sheepskin they’re printed on. :-) :-) :-)

Hey Joe, UGA led UT at the half, and did lose by 9 points. I hardly called that getting drilled. And to all of you Bees on here slandering UGA, your total lack of class is really becoming. And most of you will probably have a son or daughter going to Athens some day. And that old saying, “He who lives in glass houses”, well you know the rest. Wasn’t it your team that had all that academic trouble a while back? Seems to me I detect a bit of jealousy somewhere or you would not be hurling all of these insults.

There lies the problem for SEC basketball with exceptions being Kentucky, the week day game is a pure no thrills trip to Athens or Auburn, none of the circus atmosphere that a weekend can provide in a village atmosphere. Going to these places on a week day is like going to a vacation town on the beach in the winter time.

I know it’s still early in his UGA career and the Hoop Dawgs still are not playing .500 basketball but you have give Coach Fox a TON of credit for being able to make this squad challenging, let alone win any actual games. If he can recruit in GA, he will be a very good coach for years to come. He doesn’t necessarily have to recruit well nationally, GA produces bluechippers at seemingly every position every year, so if he can convince some of the homegrown talent to stay here, I think UGA will be challenging for an SEC REGULAR SEASON Championship within a couple of seasons.

BTW- Hats off to AD Felton for finding Coach Fox. It wasn’t the sexiest pick when it was announced, but it looks like once again it shows why Felton is considered one of the best AD’s in the nation. The man did his homework and it’s paying early dividends.

Hey Yellow Fuzz, is there a decade you would like to live in as a Jackette fan? You may need to just go with 1 year…or maybe just a game or two.

Most definately. I am betting on Paul Johnson’s first decade at Tech (2008-2018). He’s off to a very good start.

The great thing about all of this is the youth of our team. Trey T. (So.), Travis L. (So.) Dustin W. (So.). Vincent Williams is a freshman along with Ebuka Anyaroah so it’s looking great for us. Albert Jackson gets out of our way next year. And we have another year of Barnes and Price. Incoming freshman Cady Lalanee (spellcheck) should help with depth he also has an outside game ala Trey T. We have 2 more schlorships and we lose McPhee but Coach Fox tweeted that 6 foot 7 junior college transfer Connor Nolte has just a good a stroke as him. Also Gerald Robinson Jr. will be able to play and he averaged 19 points a game in JC so you can at least count on 8-10 taking over for Mcphee in the starting lineup. If CMF can get an athletic 6′10 or 6′11 center this team will give the sec hell next year and that not so competitive acc team we beat this year cant remember who that was though.

Responses to UGA basketball blogs in the AJC never cease to amaze me. Aside from the many irrelevant and blatantly adolescent commentary from Techies and gators, UGA fans (some at least) keep rapping the team for having no talent. Thomkins, Ware, Leslie, and Price were all highly rated recruits. We may lack depth but those who say we have little or no talent are full of stinky smelling stuff.
AS for recruiting–yeah, sustained success will necessarily require CMF to snag top GA recruits with some regularity. But I, for one, don’t care if Fox has to go to Uranus to get what he needs to turn this program around with the kind of successes that will make recruiting Blue chip Georgians a lot easier.

As an airplane is about to crash, a female passenger jumps up frantically and announces, “If I’m going to die, I want to die feeling like a woman.”

She removes all her clothing and asks, “Is there someone on this plane who is man enough to make me feel like a woman?”

A man stands up, removes his shirt and says, “Here, iron this!”.

Face it Yellow Fuzz, UGA still thinks and performs at a different level than GT. You have Paul Hewitt who has won what for GT? Right! UGA goes and get Mark Fox, no contest. UGA needs a DC, they get Todd Grantham. GT needs a DC, they get a recycled (fired) HC who should retire. Al Groh will be 66 before he coaches his first game at GT. I wouldn’t expect him to be there for the long haul and build anything. By the way, Yellow Fuzz sounds like a 15 year-old who stuck his face in the snow at a dog park. We don’t have to be told at UGA, don’t eat yellow snow!

You can’t have it both ways or maybe you Athes folks like it both ways. Either it matters who wins head-to-head or it doesn’t.

To bad Dooley is gone from the current school! The basketball team isn’t half bad even though we seem to only win at home. Unfortunately the football team does not seem to win on Saturday nights unless it is against inferior opponents rather than someone more of our own caliber. Will be GREAT to be a GEORGIA BULLDAWG when Richt is moved on to greener pastures. Anyone really have the warm fuzzies that this team and the new members of the staff will do anything but duplicate the past? Sure we likely win 9 or 10 this year but against whom? What a joke of a schedule. Where is the quality out of conference games? Only the GT game is anywhere close to our caliber. And the SEC EAST will be the weakest it has been in over a decade.

You got that right! “UGA thinks and performs at a different level than GT”.

UGA has always lacked in mental aptitude compared to Tech but been able to retain its self esteem due to an edge on the football field. But now that even that has been taken away from you, you dog nation AH’s have REALLY gotten louder and prouder (here) and become the biggest cry babies in the south (and possibly the entire NCAA). You have grown accustomed to being abused by Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and LSU and now that Tech and Kentucky are getting in on the act and starting to bitch slap you sideways and send you to the likes of Shreveport, you just can’t handle it. I mean, you try but just can’t. And that’s why, little man, that you see so many other schools rip you here. You guys have more enemies that Notre Dame and actually play quite like them too.
