A chat with new linebackers coach Warren Belin

(Updated)

When Georgia recently hired Warren Belin as a linebackers coach, it didn’t specify whether he would be responsible for the inside or outside linebackers in the Bulldogs’ new 3-4 defense.

Inside, Belin said Friday.

New defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will coach the outside linebackers.

“Todd and I will be working really together with the linebacker corps, [but] I’ll be focusing on . . .  the inside linebackers,” Belin said.  “There may be times in certain drills I may have to work with the outside linebackers as well.”

Completing what he called a “whirlwind” first full week on the job in Athens, Belin spoke with reporters on a conference call, his first media availability since being hired to complete the Bulldogs’ revamped defensive coaching staff.

Although acknowledging that inside and outside linebackers are distinct positions in the 3-4 defense in terms of skill sets, Belin said the core philosophy for both groups will be the same: “doing a great job with fundamentals and . . . playing with speed, being great tacklers and being productive players.”

“The outside linebackers, obviously, will be coming off the edge and bring[ing] a lot of pressure,” Belin added. “But we’ll also be bringing pressure with inside linebackers as well.”

Belin is a 20-year coaching veteran who was Vanderbilt’s linebackers coach the past eight seasons.  He also served as the Commodores’ recruiting coordinator the past two years and  special-teams coordinator in 2006-07. He  said Georgia coach Mark Richt has talked with him and other assistants about “how  we’ll divide up” special-teams coaching duties.

“We are currently working on some of those details and getting everything worked out, what we’re all going to bring to the table in trying to get better in our special teams area,” Belin said.

Three of Georgia’s four defensive coaches are new, with Belin, Grantham and secondary coach Scott Lakatos joining the lone holdover from last year’s defensive staff, line coach Rodney Garner.

As for how he came to be hired by Georgia, Belin said:  “Coach Richt has been following my career for quite some time.  . . . A couple of people recommended me to Coach Richt, and he followed through with that. After recruiting season was over, he contacted [Vanderbilt] Coach [Bobby] Johnson to ask permission. I came on the interview — had a really good interview with Coach Richt and Coach Grantham –- and I’m fortunate to have a chance to be a part of this great program.”

Since he has been on the job –- his first day  was what he called the “whiteout,” the snow that hit Athens on Feb. 12 –- Belin has been busy.  “I’m learning,” he said. “We’ve been meeting defensively as a staff, getting to know our defense and the package that we’re installing.

And he has started to get to know his players.  “My philosophy for my players –- and I’ve sat down and told all of those guys the first day -– is: honesty No. 1, fairness No. 2, and then 100 percent effort and attitude on and off the field,” Belin said.  “If you do those things and do them right every day, you have a good chance to be successful.”

On a different topic, here’s a story on the changes that will come to Stegeman Coliseum after this season.

So who will be getting Samuels ready at linebacker. I would guess with his speed they would want him on the outside but I haven’t heard.

Good question Blindog…I think Belin coached ST at Vandy and they were always pretty good. I’m assuming he will take over the reigns. Whatever they choose it will have to be an upgrade over the past few years. A n*tless monkey could do a better job than what we’ve had.

And, Gary…really? It is SAMUEL…Singular!!!

Hope this arrangement brings major concern to our other SEC peers. Yes, fl, we do consider you a peer although you are convinced that you “float” above all the rest of us! Your balloon may be getting alittle thin or tattered to keep you Way Up There in the stratosphere! Hope we prove it this year. Remember, “what are you going to do with 3rd and 4 for the 1st dn..” Run Brantley for it, of course! NOT!!!! Go DAWGS!! We SECers are sure going to miss Tebow this year!

Grantham will take thew OLB’s. These guys will be after the QB with hurries, knock downs, and sacks. Think Demarcus Ware. We need some guys that are a combo of strong and fast.

I like this decision, and it’s the most natural choice. Belin loves focusing on tackling technique-wise. He’s known as the best in the SEC for tackles and shedding blockers with his MLB’s. ILB’s in the 3-4 serve the same purpose. The strong safety will also give some run support. It leaves Grantham to use his stunts to send a QB blitzer from different places on every play. This uncertainty and unpredictibility drives QB’s crazy. In the NFL at least, the OLB’s in the 3-4 lead the NFL in sacks. It’s a great scheme for getting to the QB.

If the way Florida responded to the 3-4 against Alabama is any sign of how other SEC teams will respond, things are loooking up for Coach Grantham. It’s not a defense you’ll see a lot of, even with extra days to prepare, Florida had no answer for the 3-4 against Bama.

Great, another special teams by committee approach to coaching. I don’t understand Richt’s subborness and refusal to appoint a sole ST’s coach instead of this piece meal approach that he has been doing. It constitutes a third of the game, and can win and lose you games just like offense and defense, and it’s time Richt treat it the same.

Da Roun Circle, dont you think the way Florida responded to Bama’s 3-4 wasn’t because of the 3-4; it was because Bama had superior atheletes on D. Do you think Grantham will have the same quality of atheletes and besides UF is going to a version of the 3-4 so they might figure it out by then.

I do believe that when I explored the US in the 1500’s looking for the Fountain of Youth that he shouldn’t of looked near St.Augustine, he should have gone to Athens. I have never seen as big a group of fans that have hope that forever springs eternal. One year you blast Samuel and then all of a sudden he will be All-American. Richard Samuel will be a better LB than he was a HB. He will actually have a chance to shine on defense unlike offense where we had CK4 and Washaun. Look for him to be a great LB in Granthams scheme. Ponce DeLeon, the US was not around in the 1500s. If you’re going to criticize people for being delusional, at least get your history right. Speaking of history, tell me what Florida ever did before Steve Spurrier. Can’t wait for spring practice to see how our depth chart will shake out on defense. I think we’ll ultimately learn that the 1 gap 3-4 will give us more speed and quickness on the field to combat spread passing attacks like FL.

For those who post regularly on the Dawg Chat at UGASports.com, I’m sure you know by now that Steve Patterson, the owner of that site, has now made the Chat a subscription site when it has always been free. While I readily acknowledge that Steve has the absolute right to charge anything he desires for posting on, or using, his site, I also believe that his decision is akin to raising taxes in a recession!! Better to practice supply-side economics here and lower existing fees for everyone if you’re going to make the Dawg Chat a pay site to encourage more people to sign up, allowing you to raise more revenue with more members at a lower fee.

Steve, you admitted to me last fall at the beginning of the college football season on the DawgChat that college sports message boards had “jumped the shark.” To suddenly chop longtime Chatters off at the knees without prior notice and move to an “all or none” full subscription basis for use of the Dawg Chat shows that your college board has moved well beyond “jumping the shark” and borders on “screwing the pooch (pun intended!!),” causing longtime posters there to leave forever without hope of ever generating more revenue from them.

I would appreciate someone from the DawgChat cutting and pasting my post to the Chat, so that Steve knows how some long-standing posters there feel about his decision. Many thanks, and Go Dawgs!!

UGA was the top or very near the top in punting, punt return, PAT, FG last year. And traditionally is every year. Where did it become a fact that our entire special teams were not well developed or coached? Its just factually wrong.

The ONLY area that has concern was KO, and to some degree KO return, although we did have 2 run back for TD.

On the oft-mentioned KO team, UGA was right in the middle of the SEC pack which isnt that difficult seeing how the entire league was within a handfull of yards. UGA was better than the NC Bama, fwiw. The top teams last year were near the bottom the year before. Fl has been near the bottom in KO, WITH coach meyers coaching it himself in the recent past.

We had a Frosh and almost no able bodies 2 years ago, and improved the actual ball placement so much this past season, UGA lead the SEC in TB. We need a couple more back-up LB on the squad, and a tweak at corraling and tackling, and nobody is going to mention this again.

I agree ga gator. I think its just that it’s easier to blame special teams than to admit that Tailback U simple coudn’t not run the ball for most of the season. I think it’s easier to fault old coach Fabris for his squad for a couple of plays, than it was to be honest about new and popular Coach Searels’ squad 20 times a game.

Now granted, a lot of Searels issues had to do with personel, but so too did Fabris. We never had any issues with special teams all this time till about mid way through the 2008 season, which I think is obvious to explain. And 2009 was not nearly as bad as the perception. Outstanding, in some respects.

Look friend, I agree Florida has been powerful since 1990, LSU since 2000, and now Alabama with Saban. But this is what you are overlooking is all these schools turned it around immediately after hiring outstanding coaches. Richt has been at Georgia starting his 10 year and can’t come close to the records of Meyer, Miles and Saban.
Look, Martinez was the DC for only 3 years, so he can’t be your whipping boy. I don’t know what others DC Richt has hired, but he is still 2-7against Florida and 4-1 against Meyer who had to bring in an entirely new football staff in when he became head coach. I hope you and the other dawg fans understand he is very of capable hiring coaching staffs. He has been the Head coach and has been very successful at three different schools. Every new coach Meyers hires is some one he has worked with before or one of his staff has worked with. Don’t even think him replacing 4-5 coaches will give Richt or Ga, any edge what so ever.
Richt has been the head coach only at ONE school UGA and it is starting to show. While he maintained Ga’s. winning record initially, he is starting to slip now. His record was much better the 1st 4 years than the past five———-look it up.

Florida will not be able to adjust to the 3-4. It’s the defense that killed the spread offense. The blitzing stunts confounded Tebow, a Senior, to one of his worst performance ever—Brantley’s head will be spinning. Florida has no answers. Tebow looked pitiful against the scheme. A bunch of freshman will have no clue how to read it.

Hate to say it but “Gatorbait 17-3″ is right for the most part. Only teams that we can brag about consistanlty beating is GT & Auburn. They do not determine who wins the SEC East or NC for that matter. I like like CMR, but he has not had the success that Myer, Saban & Miles has had. The talent has been there. I think we will have a good idea in a couple years to see if it was the DC’s fault or if it’s time for a change. I still hold out that our new DC will bring some serious changes. Teams rally around D-Fense. We have the offense. Should be interesting!

If you go back to that Florida-Bama SEC Champ game, Tebow went 57% completion, 1 td, 1 int., Florida got 88 yards rushing, Time of Possession 40 minutes Bama–Florida 20 Minutes, and Florida went 4-11 on 3rd down.

Florida had 10 top 1000 recruits, Bama only 3, so it was NOT talent, it was all scheme.

Florida didn’t respond well to the 3-4 defense. The spread got crushed by the 3-4, of course, no other SEC responded well to the Bama 3-4 defense either.

Coach Belin has “coached up” players contributing to the NFL. That in itself is a great set of credentials to the recruits. Teaching NFL methods for shedding blockers to get to the runner or receiver is always of interest to the recruits. Richt first 8 years in the SEC……………………82 wins Richt has a better record

Meyers first 5 years in SEC ……2 SEC titles.
Richts first 5 years in SEC……..2 SEC titles ..richts record is as good.

Clearly Richt is as good or better. Now let look at the luck aspect.

Richt has finished in the top 10 six out of his nine seasons at Georgia (yes he finished #10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll last year, the same poll that hands out the BCS Natl Championship trophy).

Thats more than any other SEC coache.

You have to be very lucky to win a Natl Championship – Florida would not have been in the Natl Champ game in 2006 without USC inexplicably losing its final game to Karl Dorrell and UCLA.

Look at LSU in 2007 and the circumstances in which that two loss team made the championship game. Richt simply has not had that kind of luck bestowed on him yet – matter of fact he should have been playing for the Natl Championship in 2002 and 2007 if not for some luck of the opposite kind.

hmmmm

February 19th, 2010
7:51 pm

Richt has put them in a position to be in the SEC title hunt every year. How many other programs in the SEC can say that? That’s the problem with a lot of UGA fans (and you), you only see what UGA hasn’t done. You don’t see what they HAVE done.

All Richt needs is one lucky year. Its interesting to note that UF and LSU have won national titles with the same record UGA had when it won its two SEC titles. Its not that UGA is not as good of a program as either of the two, they have just been luckier than UGA. And that’s the truth.

Altamahadawg, you must be kidding regarding Fabris? Short directional kicks, opponents starting from their 35+ yd line over and over again. How many times did you see a red jersey cross the opponent’s 20 before the opponent did? Rarely any Georgia player anywhere on the screen. Going after an opponent’s punter was rarer than hen’s teeth! Just glad to see him go.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. And its nice to know that your head coach with be a stressed out basket case by week 5. Get ready for mediocrity.

Tough to get those 3rd and 3s with scat backs. For four years you guys were garunteed 1st downs on tough situations like this but no more not without Timmy. you’ll see

J Dawg, wake up son. The offense will be similar to Chris Leak except Brantley has a stronger arm and last time I checked Leak did ok. I wouldn’t say the backs are anywhere close to where they need to be but UGA’s backs still have something to prove. I wouldn’t say running up and down the field on Tech exactly makes you think Hershel is back. I am a GEORGIA BULLDOG that is pumped about our chances in 2010. Defense wins championships, and we already have the talent on the D side of the ball to exact some serious ass whoopin right out of the gate. Changes like we made on Defense do something special for players …….it motivates them !!! It creates that defensive swagger we have longed for at UGA…..Yup, my friends, I m talking JUNK YARD DOGS !!! The 3-4 Defense is fun ! Just imagine, you are a young, but tough Bulldog, and last year you were told ‘Son bend but dont break’…..Now your coach is screaming in your ear…..’Son rip their heads off, and stomp em in the ground, hit somebody, and make em feel it , get that QB and make him miserable, confuse and destroy that offense son’…..Did anyone watch Alabamas defense last year ? they were having a ball , and that is just exactly what our UGA BULLDOGS are going to be doing in 2010 …..GO DOGS !!!! Elin Nordegren is a sweet gal who should not have had this happen to her. Do I believe she took a golf club to his cheating butt ? Yes. Absolutely she did, in my opinion. It is what happens in this situation. God Almighty Tiger Woods you are entitled.

Tiger Woods is married.

All the porn stars with their 18 porn movies in the last 2 years of their affairs with Tiger Woods, and there are dozens who say they have slept with Tiger Woods are all well aware that Tiger Woods is married to one of the world’s greatest ladies.

All of them owe Elin Nordegren an apology.

Tiger Woods looked horrible today.

The only reason I watch any golf is because of Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods failed to mention all the dozens of women who were willing to share his bed with him, married. In fact, he named none of them

BuLLdawg, your an early riser. None of the people shown at the Tiger confession looked like they wanted to be there. Funny his wife wasn’t there. Tiger can have everything except the one woman he decided to marry. His only addiction is to manipulation, and yes he should have appologized to the girlsssss(#?) he lied to. But thats none of my business but i wouldn’t mind Elin going Bobbit on Tiger so he can then compete against Michelle Wie on a regular basis. Dang BuLLdawg i was thinking about the Dawgs and you got me started on Tiger.

The Knox Culpeppers, Greg”Muddy”Waters, Thomas Davis, Greg Blue, Terry Hoage,Eddie “meat cleaver”Weaver, Jimmy Payne, on and on and with the many, many, many great Junkyarders…..

I can feel the change in the air with what these D coaches are saying. Good stuff! Can’t wait to see these guys on G-Day.

Yes, it’s apparent the mutts are wishing in one hand and squeezing in the other when fantasizing about 2010 and what might be . Having said that, for years now you have UNDERACHIEVED as team that has been repeatedly THROTTLED by Fla., Tenn. Ala., ( remember 2008) and recently by O. SU., Kentucky, and nearly twice by Vandy and GT (who is so waiting ) to ramp it up come November.

A quarterback position in limbo, unknown position rotation on defense, and that looming question about another season of UNDERACHIEVING.

WILL YOU FILE OUT IN THE BEGINNING OF THE THIRD QUARTER COME NOVEMBER ??
Man that could be a BAD scene.

The one thing I will agree with that Pons-Day-Lee-Ahn guy is that we are, indeed, delusional. And the comment from another poster that said, in effect, ‘This is the SEC, we’re all delusional’. If by that he meant that we have faith, even maybe blind faith, in our guys, then you’re damn right I’m delusional. None of the ‘experts’, seem to think that Georgia has much of a chance to be any better than we were last year – so what? No matter how disappointed I may be in the overall results from last year, I defy anybody to get in my face and give me crap about my team and our chances. You may find yourself finding out what ‘delusional’ tastes like.

Sure there are, so-called, Dawg fans that want to take out their frustration on CMR, or Mike Bobo, or Willie or whomever, but to do so publicly shows a lack of loyalty to the program and the players. If you got a problem, keep it to your-own-self.

As for Mr. Ponce…your street here in town needs the trash picked up more regularly, get with it.

Since the Bama Florida SEC Champ game, the template is there on how to beat Florida: stop the run, make them pass to beat you. Like Ga Tech, they just don’t like tp pass. Then you need to have a great running game to control the clock.

Georgia’s running game is ranked #5 in the NCAA over the last few games of the year. We got it cookin’ and it’s gnna be fun crushing the Gators and other SEC teams.

They’re all going down in 2010.

Florida didn’t stop Georgia’s running game in 2009. Samuel got over 6 yards a carry, he’s a LB. King & Ealey both got over 4 ypc against Florida.

Bama has Ingram and Richardson at 5.2 and 6.1 ypc.

Georgia has King, Ealey, and Smith at 5.2, 5.7 & 12.2 ypc.

Georgia’s gonna run the ball in 2010 for 225 a game.

With Belin and Grantham, UGA’s gonna get to the QB with knock downs, pressures, and sacks. That’s gonna make all the difference this time around. UGA has the best defensive staff in the SEC East. This scheme is where it’s at. Lakatos back to defend the pass, Garner to defend the rush, and Grantham & Belin to get to the QB. Florida got hurt by Bama’s 3-4. Belin’s LB’s have great fundamentals and technique.
