(Updated)
When Georgia recently hired Warren Belin as a linebackers coach, it didn’t specify whether he would be responsible for the inside or outside linebackers in the Bulldogs’ new 3-4 defense.
Inside, Belin said Friday.
New defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will coach the outside linebackers.
“Todd and I will be working really together with the linebacker corps, [but] I’ll be focusing on . . . the inside linebackers,” Belin said. “There may be times in certain drills I may have to work with the outside linebackers as well.”
Completing what he called a “whirlwind” first full week on the job in Athens, Belin spoke with reporters on a conference call, his first media availability since being hired to complete the Bulldogs’ revamped defensive coaching staff.
Although acknowledging that inside and outside linebackers are distinct positions in the 3-4 defense in terms of skill sets, Belin said the core philosophy for both groups will be the same: “doing a great job with fundamentals and . . . playing with speed, being great tacklers and being productive players.”
“The outside linebackers, obviously, will be coming off the edge and bring[ing] a lot of pressure,” Belin added. “But we’ll also be bringing pressure with inside linebackers as well.”
Belin is a 20-year coaching veteran who was Vanderbilt’s linebackers coach the past eight seasons. He also served as the Commodores’ recruiting coordinator the past two years and special-teams coordinator in 2006-07. He said Georgia coach Mark Richt has talked with him and other assistants about “how we’ll divide up” special-teams coaching duties.
“We are currently working on some of those details and getting everything worked out, what we’re all going to bring to the table in trying to get better in our special teams area,” Belin said.
Three of Georgia’s four defensive coaches are new, with Belin, Grantham and secondary coach Scott Lakatos joining the lone holdover from last year’s defensive staff, line coach Rodney Garner.
As for how he came to be hired by Georgia, Belin said: “Coach Richt has been following my career for quite some time. . . . A couple of people recommended me to Coach Richt, and he followed through with that. After recruiting season was over, he contacted [Vanderbilt] Coach [Bobby] Johnson to ask permission. I came on the interview — had a really good interview with Coach Richt and Coach Grantham –- and I’m fortunate to have a chance to be a part of this great program.”
Since he has been on the job –- his first day was what he called the “whiteout,” the snow that hit Athens on Feb. 12 –- Belin has been busy. “I’m learning,” he said. “We’ve been meeting defensively as a staff, getting to know our defense and the package that we’re installing.
And he has started to get to know his players. “My philosophy for my players –- and I’ve sat down and told all of those guys the first day -– is: honesty No. 1, fairness No. 2, and then 100 percent effort and attitude on and off the field,” Belin said. “If you do those things and do them right every day, you have a good chance to be successful.”
On a different topic, here’s a story on the changes that will come to Stegeman Coliseum after this season.

You are right…those are some great coaches….But defensively…not too many coaches jump out at you. not like Grantham’s do…Great head coaches but defense guru’s no..maybe Joe Pa and Bo but the others are offense minded…I believe UF was a riskier hire…I believe it was a knee jerk hire and we all know how those can turn out…

Winning OUR conference championship while you AH’s didn’t come remotely close to even playing in yours.
Advancing to a BCS bowl, not to be confused with the mid December, Shreveport Bowl.
Final BCS ranking of 13th nationally while without Bobby Bowden’s charity vote you would have been tied for LAST!
All in just TWO seasons
SEE YOU AH’S BETWEEN THE HEDGES (what’s left of them after we were their last).
Put that in your Copenhagen and dip it!

Ponce Really???, I remember those who thought that Spurrier was a risky hire at Florida because he didn’t work hard enough, played golf too much. Zook was also a risky hire and of course nearly everyone said that Meyer’s offense wouldn’t work with SEC defenses and that it was a risky hire. All 3 worked ok since 1990, wouldnt you say?

Look, i’m not saying UGA is the best program ever. We have had are Highs and lows…hell what team has not. I am a huge Georgia fan and supporter, however i do not understand how rivals of georgia, really feel that we can never be on top again or rebuild into a consecutive power school. UF has not been winning for ever they only stated becoming powerful in the nineties. LSU in the 2000’s. Now BAMA, my point is if they can flip around with some coaching changes so can we. Like it or not, UGA down fall has been are defense lately not coach Richt. With a complete face lift on are defense, i feel very posistive in the direction we are taking and look forward to playing teams like UF, BAMA, LSU, in the future. GO DAWGS!!!!!!

You’re right as far as UGA goes, I believe that has more to do with the cycle of nineteen than anything. I wouldn’t say it was impressive…I wnet back and looked at the names you mentioned as hc..two offensive…two defensive…guess who were at the two schools before CUM got there…the two defense coordinators…CUM really doesn’t have a proven track record when bringing in new DC….Time will tell….I wouldn’t be bragging about him just yet…

I agree ga gator. I think its just that it’s easier to blame special teams than to admit that Tailback U simple coudn’t not run the ball for most of the season. I think it’s easier to fault old coach Fabris for his squad for a couple of plays, than it was to be honest about new and popular Coach Searels’ squad 20 times a game.
Now granted, a lot of Searels issues had to do with personel, but so too did Fabris. We never had any issues with special teams all this time till about mid way through the 2008 season, which I think is obvious to explain. And 2009 was not nearly as bad as the perception. Outstanding, in some respects.

I think that the entire SEC East is up in the air. Still give the knod to UF, but I think USC will surprise. I think our year will be in two. Tough to win the SEC with a new QB & DC. I hope I’m wrong though.

Coach Fab’s downfall can be directly related to the moving back on the kick off. When that rule was changed, his coverages changed…When was the last time went after the punter… it seemed like lost that edge on SP…Maybe bringing in new blood we get that edge back….We shall hope and see..

Look friend, I agree Florida has been powerful since 1990, LSU since 2000, and now Alabama with Saban. But this is what you are overlooking is all these schools turned it around immediately after hiring outstanding coaches. Richt has been at Georgia starting his 10 year and can’t come close to the records of Meyer, Miles and Saban.
Look, Martinez was the DC for only 3 years, so he can’t be your whipping boy. I don’t know what others DC Richt has hired, but he is still 2-7against Florida and 4-1 against Meyer who had to bring in an entirely new football staff in when he became head coach. I hope you and the other dawg fans understand he is very of capable hiring coaching staffs. He has been the Head coach and has been very successful at three different schools. Every new coach Meyers hires is some one he has worked with before or one of his staff has worked with. Don’t even think him replacing 4-5 coaches will give Richt or Ga, any edge what so ever.
Richt has been the head coach only at ONE school UGA and it is starting to show. While he maintained Ga’s. winning record initially, he is starting to slip now. His record was much better the 1st 4 years than the past five———-look it up.

Florida will not be able to adjust to the 3-4. It’s the defense that killed the spread offense. The blitzing stunts confounded Tebow, a Senior, to one of his worst performance ever—Brantley’s head will be spinning. Florida has no answers. Tebow looked pitiful against the scheme. A bunch of freshman will have no clue how to read it.

Gatorbait 17-3 His overall record is as good as theirs. Just not as good when it needed to be(big games). I agree with you some what. He let go of the offense two years ago. I think he sees the writing on the wall and with the changes he made at DC and the fact he publicly stated he was going to be more involved with the offense things will change. Only time will tell.

Hate to say it but “Gatorbait 17-3″ is right for the most part. Only teams that we can brag about consistanlty beating is GT & Auburn. They do not determine who wins the SEC East or NC for that matter. I like like CMR, but he has not had the success that Myer, Saban & Miles has had. The talent has been there. I think we will have a good idea in a couple years to see if it was the DC’s fault or if it’s time for a change. I still hold out that our new DC will bring some serious changes. Teams rally around D-Fense. We have the offense. Should be interesting!
