Dogs’ Lakatos ranked best DB coach hire — ahead of Oklahoma’s Martinez

Mark Richt’s new hires continue to draw applause.

Tom Dienhart, senior college football writer for Rivals.com, lists what he considers the nation’s best position-coach hires of this off-season.

SCOTTLAKATOS250_215UGA

Scott Lakatos

He ranks Georgia’s Scott Lakatos as the best hire among defensive-backs coaches, calling the former Connecticut assistant “an adept teacher and well-respected tactician.”

A familiar name gets an honorable mention in Dienhart’s best-defensive-backs-coach-hire category.  None other than Willie Martinez, Oklahoma’s new DB coach.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s Warren Belin gets an honorable mention as best new hire among linebackers coaches –- behind N.C. State’s hire of Jon Tenuta.

(If you’re wondering, defensive coordinators who double as position coaches weren’t considered. So no mention of Georgia’s other linebackers coach, DC Todd Grantham.)

Take a look at UGA’s record over the last 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. Now look at Tech’s over that same span. What do we notice, bakers man. Nice use of the word LOSER! HA HA. TT: Nice cloumn. Short and to the point. Perhaps Martinez wasn’t as bad a DB coach as we thought, instead he was such a bad DC he rose to his level of incompetency and there he stayed. There are some great ass’t coaches out there who can take orders/recruit but cannot formulate an overall plan. Wish him luck. Does anyone else think our new DC reminds them of a former DC that was short on hair. They have at least one MOTTO in common—-ATTACK !!!! I cannot wait until spring game…and also see Mr. Ogletree remove Da’ricks head from his shoulders. I believe he’d better have his head on a swivel when/id he goes over the middle.

ARKANSAS : I am quite sure all the DISNEYdawg.com posters will assure you of a win over a team that played us to the wire last year. Bobby Petrino beat Auburn both years of Bobby Petrino’s 1st 2 years. He also beat LSU the 1st year and Lost to LSU this past year by 3 points. Our posters try to tell me that beating Texas A&M was so great while I point out that they had a LOSING RECORD. Ok, so Bobby Petrino lost both years to Florida and Alabama, well so did we or we certainly would have, given the opportunity. Georgia’s record is NO BETTER than Arkansas’ at 8-5 both of us. Ryan Mallett is 6’ 6” and 255 lbs. along with being the Best Quarterback on either UGA or Arkansas’ rosters. Cakewalk for UGA, that’s what I expect you all to say. Oh, and that I cannot say that this is just the type of game that UGA has LOST in the Coach Richt Era. In fact, in the Coach Richt Era, UGA has LOST to 8 teams not even ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll. Don’t give me this, this sets up well for UGA to be playing a better QB than we have coached around here in a long long long long time. Home Game. In the Coach Richt Era at HOME we have LOST to Tennessee vols half the time 2 times, LOST to LSU half the time, LOST to Auburn 2 times, LOST to South Carolina 2 times, heck we even LOST to Kentucky at HOME, LOST to Vanderbilt for God’s sake at HOME and LOST to Georgia tek at HOME. We also LOST to Alabama at HOME losing 31 to Nothing at HALF TIME when Alabama and Georgia were both ranked in the Top 5 in the country. But, Arkansas poses NO ISSUE and is an EASY WIN for UGA. Yeah, right.

MISSISSIPPI STATE : Every poster will say UGA win. Fine. I just point out to you that we LOST to Kentucky and to the vols in the season which just ended and both of those teams would have had a LOSING RECORD had they not both BEAT UGA. At Mississippi State. We LOST to Kentucky ON THE ROAD in Matthew Stafford’s great cough cough Freshman Year, an UNRANKED Kentucky team, but Mississippi State is just show up and collect the victory. Yeah, right.

COLORADO : Big XII team. Never mind they beat Texas A&M too, because UGA beat Texas A&M and therefore UGA is great. At Colorado State. Let’s see started the season against Big XII Oklahoma State who ended the season NOT RANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, and even Houston beat Oklahoma State, but not UGA, not in the Coach Richt Era. Now, we travel to Colorado. Did I miss it or something or is there a recruit we got from Oklahoma which I maybe missed after our great showing out there in Big XII country Oklahoma State, scoring 10 points on them in total ? We beat Colorado by 1 point when we had to YANK Matthew Stafford and be saved by Joe Cox 14-13 but oh out there on the road against Colorado in the Big XII this assures UGA Bulldogs under Coach Richt a sure fire win. Cough Cough. You think we have that KILLER INSTINCT with Coach Richt. I know we do NOT.

TENNESSEE vols : Now we are having fun, right ? Kick their butts like we did last year. Ooops, sorry. Must have got the years mixed up there. Got the vols at HOME. That’s where we want them this year, right ? 8 years in a row, UGA has had the BETTER FOOTBALL TEAM than the vols. We LOST HALF those games 4. This one on the road. And, they came down here to Georgia and took their BEST RECRUITS from Georgia. Hmm. Obvious easy win for UGA on the road in Neyland Stadium. Never mind that UGA in the Coach Richt Era has LOST 12 times away from Sanford Stadium against The SEC. Never mind Coach Richt has taken the better team up there 4 times and LOST 2 already. And, the vols will not be getting all their guys arrested on Cumberland Boulevard on Felonies this year, not with Coach Dooley, the 1st Coach the vols have had in my lifetime who is NOT a total JOKE. Oh, yeah, mark this down on your calendar GUARANTEED WIN for UGA, right ?

VANDERBILT : at HOME. Oh, great. Vanderbilt cannot beat UGA not at our House. We had MATTHEW STAFFORD going against Vanderbilt at HOME and Vanderbilt was a 4-8 team. We BEAT Vanderbilt right ? No. Matthew Stafford scored 22 points against a 4-8 team who would have been 3-9 except to play our OFFENSE. Matthew Stafford scored 24 points against Vandie the next time Vandie came to town and we squeaked out that win, but that gets rid of the revenge avenging the LOSS at HOME to Vandie with Matthew Stafford as our Quarterback. Now, this season we have 3 MORE FRESHMEN QUARTERBACKS. Obviously, this is a game we can just mark it down too like all the others. NO WAY we LOSE to Vandie. Right ? 8 LOSSES in 9 years against UNRANKED teams NOT in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, but Vandie, just mark it down and move on in this discussion. Right ?

KENTUCKY : Oh, yeah, this is a really easy schedule for UGA 2010 Bill King, you blithering idiot. ON THE ROAD. That’s even better. I mean for God’s sake Coach Richt has ONLY LOST 12 GAMES IN THE SEC away from home. 12 LOSSES in The SEC alone in 9 years and let’s see Kentucky has already beat us up there. But, I am sure, we just mark this one down, right ? Cough Cough. Who was it who WON the game against Kentucky at our house just played ? Oh, that was Kentucky who BEAT us at OUR HOUSE and now we are going to Kentucky. We scored 27 points on Kentucky at our house and a 7-6 Kentucky BEAT UGA. Now, we go there and well we return 10 of our 11 LOSERS on OFFENSE. Should we just chalk this one up too as an EVIDENT WIN ? No problems with this cupcake schedule UGA has. Go undefeated. Win the National Championship. Win The SEC Championship. Should we just ignore Florida ?

FLORIDA : Uh, here we are. Florida. Obviously we will be 8-0 with our 3 Freshmen Quarterbacks and our great OFFENSE. Well, if you don’t count FUMBLES. Well, if you don’t count INTERCEPTIONS. Well, if you don’t count PENALTIES. Because our UGA offense even without 3 Freshmen Quarterbacks has LED THE NATION in Penalties, Fumbles and Interceptions. Now, we have Florida right where we want them. No off week for UGA prior to the game. CBS. Hottest part of the day. We will get our boys down there the day before Friday to get acclimated to the humidity of Jacksonville with it no doubt 30 or 40 degrees colder for us up here. Go to 45 minutes from their campus. Tim Tebow is gone. Never mind we beat Florida at a higher percentage rate when Tim Tebow was there. But, Tim Tebow is gone. Sure win for UGA never mind Florida too came up here to UGA and took THEIR BEST RECRUITS from RIGHT HERE TOO, like the vols did too, and Auburn and everyone else. What’s our excuse going to be this year ? Injuries ? Bad call by the officials ? Oh, if it weren’t for that 1 play, etc. Just asking but if we LOSE to Florida are we OUT OF IT in our OWN DIVISION ? Does that then TAKE UGA off the NATIONAL STAGE all together ? I guess I must to be a TRUE UGA BULLDOG FAN, say like our Freshmen Quarterback who NEVER TOOK A SNAP UNDER CENTER in his lifetime at 198 lbs and barely 6 feet tall frankly looks shorter and smaller, with INJURIES 2 YEARS IN A ROW NOW because of his size, and he does NOT throw with much ZIP, I guess I should call that then what ? Throws a CATCHABLE BALL. He’s going to go down there and WIN. Win Baby Win. No one cares anyway. We have won 3 games in the last 2 decades against Florida. Our fans ignore this game, probably because all they went down there to do, was to GET DRUNK.

DO WE FINISH OUT THE REST OF THE YEAR ?

OR JUST GIVE UP ?

AUBURN : UGA has LOST to Auburn 3 times in the Coach Richt Era, but this one is in Auburn and Auburn NEVER BEATS US at THEIR HOUSE. Well, almost NEVER because Auburn has BEAT COACH RICHT at THEIR HOUSE and rolled their tree. Now, we 3 Freshmen Quarterbacks oh Mike Bobo is going to kick Auburn’s butt at their house. Auburn is a bad team and UGA has won 4 in a row, never mind we LOST 3 of the previous 5 back when UGA was good. Anyway, UGA beat Georgia tek and tek ended up Number 13 in the Final AP Poll Top 25. Auburn beat Tennessee vols and WE LOST TO THE vols. Auburn also beat West Virginia and Ole Miss and Auburn won on NEW YEAR’S DAY in a New Year’s Day Bowl Game, but UGA ? OBSERVABLY BETTER THAN AUBURN, right ?

GEORGIA tek : Don’t have to discuss this one either, right ? Easy Win. Have them ‘Tween the Hedges. Oh, the LAST TIME ‘TWEEN THE HEDGES Georgia tek won ? That can’t be right can it ? I mean UGA was so great that year. Started out the season # 1 in the nation in every poll. Promptly went out and dropped to # 13 in the Final AP Poll, Coach Richt did without that KILLER INSTINCT. Hey # 13, had we started there at # 13 instead of # 1, we would NOT HAVE BEEN RANKED IN THE FINAL AP POLL TOP 25, obviously. Hey # 13, AND WE LOST to Georgia tek AT OUR HOUSE. Great freaking season for UGA. We gave up 29 CONSECUTIVE POINTS to Georgia tek, our OFFENSE is so damn great with such wonderful play calls. It’s just the players who are to blame for all the penalties, fumbles and interceptions – that has NOTHING to do with the Offensive Coaching Staff. We have to spend $750,000 on the Defensive Coordinator and MORE THAN THAT for his assistants, but on OFFENSE, we don’t need that. We have the BEST PLAYERS, right ? Who cares what we call on Offense. BEFORE we gave up 29 CONSECUTIVE POINTS to Georgia tek the year before last AT OUR HOUSE, this great season we had NO ONE CAN SAY OTHERWISE IN HERE, we gave up 31 CONSECUTIVE POINTS to another team and LOST and gave up 42 CONSECUTIVE POINTS to another team and LOST that game too, but hey we were # 1 in the nation in every poll that year the year before last. We are just great.

SHOULD I LEAVE OUT THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME between ALABAMA and FLORIDA, or I am REQUIRED IN HERE TO SAY THAT IT WILL BE ALABAMA and UGA ? Or just what do I say about the 14th game when we WIN 10 a year, and hey that’s the BEST IN THE SEC. Best in the nation. Never mind both of those are LIES.

BOWL GAME : For the 1st time in The Coach Richt Era, Coach Richt will play a BOWL GAME against a Top Ranked Opponent in the Final AP Poll Top 10. You know on the National Stage so I can come in here and brag about HOW GREAT Coach Richt is ? Oh, no we won’t either. We have played EXACTLY 11 of those games in the Coach Richt Era, and ALL 11 are Top 10 SEC teams in the Final AP Poll and we by the way, won 3 of the 11.

How can this be a rebuilding year Bill King, after we just LOST 5 games ? That was the rebuilding year, last year, right ?

The Watergirl,

DELIVER ? Time to deliver, The Watergirl ? Nah, it’s not time to deliver. Coach Richt is already the Best in The SEC, never mind that BOTH LSU and Florida have a BETTER WON/LOSS RECORD than Coach Richt in the Coach Richt Era. Never mind Alabama who led 31 to NOTHING at half time at our house the year before, has ALSO left UGA in the dust, sucking on the crappy one back at the back of the pack. Never mind that the vols have had the WORSE TEAM 8 years in a row, but won HALF those 8 games, 4. Never mind we have a LOSING RECORD at only 17 wins to 19 LOSSES against teams that ended that season ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll. Never mind that we have played in NO GOOD BOWL GAME AGAINST A TOP OPPONENT on the NATIONAL STAGE in the ENTIRE COACH RICHT ERA. We have played 11 teams who in fact ended that season in the Top 10 Final AP Poll; too bad we only won 3 of them and worse yet that all 11 are SEC teams in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll. 3 wins vs 11 teams in the Top 10 all SEC teams. No Top 10 Bowl Opponent, not Top 10 in the Final AP Poll, like the 11 teams we have played in the Coach Richt Era, all 11 SEC Top 10 Final AP Poll teams with but 3 wins.

The Watergirl

You are NOT ALLOWED TO SAY THAT IN HERE madam.

You are authorized as a true Bulldog fan to say ONLY that UGA in the Coach Richt Era has ALREADY ARRIVED, ALREADY DELIVERED, already the BEST in the SEC, Best in the SEC East, best in the nation.

END DISNEYdawg.com poster quote

Now, you got it. That’s the ONLY TYPE post allowed in here. You are NOT allowed to say anything about the “OFFENSE coaching staff” and certainly are allowed to IGNORE all the OFFENSIVE RECRUITS all those teams you mentioned AND MORE like Auburn came in HERE to this state and STOLE on Offense. Florida way down, oh yeah obviously I mean we have won 3 of the previous 20 against them; I mean they are so DOWN. Wow they really suck. 3 National Championships in the last decade and a half, and we 0 in over 3 Decades Now. Obviously we are going to TAKE OVER THE SEC EAST FOR GOOD with this OFFENSE we got.

I do just have 1 question though. If it is right for us to spend $750,000 on an 11-year NFL Veteran Defensive Coordinator and MORE THAN THAT on the rest of the Defensive Staff, how again is it right that YOU IGNORE TOTALLY THE OFFENSIVE COACHING STAFF again please kind sir ?

Dawg in VA, yeah, I mean we really “shut down Florida” with their 42 unanswered points against us, politely clapping on the sidelines when we finally YANK Matthew Stafford for Joe Cox to score with the time running out.

Good that Lakotas is gettng the love–his coaching is stunning: top 10 pass defense 2x, least penalties in NCAA, excellent at forcing turnovers, getting guys to the NFL, resiliency, etc.

Surprised Tenuta was ranked ahead of Belin at LB. Tenuta’s LB core, highest rank talent in NCAA, hasn’t led the league in tackles or achieved all conference honors.

Belin’s in the toughest conference, and hasn’t had any 5 star guys. Yet he still leads the SEC in tackles every year, and has an LB make all-conference every year.

Not even close.

Also agree on the Willie Martinez hire as being one of the best. Willie’s an excellent DB coach. Lots of his guys went to the NFL.

I just don’t see us being a great SEC team until our offensive play-calling improves bigtime. So much talent, depth, and experience (except for experience at QB position this upcoming year) and our playcalling is predictable, overly conservative, sometimes really mindless. BOBO needs to pack his bags. Great hires on D though.

I don’t see Florida being a player on offense until they get rid of Addazio. He had them scoring 8 LESS points a game in 2009, and the O-Line averaged LESS rushing yards, and gave up 2x more sacks than 2008.

The Florida QB got WORSE in yards, td’s and sacks, for the 3rd straight year. The QB coach needs to be fired too.

No one thinks UGA is going undeafted this year, but they should be equal or better than most teams in talent except UF. How is this Genius, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida all have unproven quarterbacks in the division, so it should be wide open with SC and Kentucky. Grantham will face 4 top scoring offenses in 2010:
#1 Arkansas– 35 points a game
#2 Fla 34 points a game
#3 Ga Tech 33 points a game
#4 Auburn 31 points a game

The good news, none of them have a great defensive staff. So Georgia can outscore these 4 if needed like we did last year against Ark, Ga Tech & Auburn.

Yellow Fuzz, ya’ll’s 3 point win in ‘08 constituted “stomping a mudhole” in UGA, so using that logic a 30-24 victory should at least qualify as a “beatdown”.

Will some explain what is so great about the new DC Grantham, other than the fact
his name isn’t Willie? He is just a NFL def. line coach and can’t work miricles without great players. GA doesn’t have alot of great players coming back from a sorry def. last year. The 2 best def. tackles graduated and Richt’s 2010 class doesn’t have many def. studs.

in recent memory.

“Defense Wins Championships” I agree with you too.
That’s why the Gators Def. has been in the top 5 the past several years in every

CatsFly, the old saying is “you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh**” and that’s exactly what Coach Fox inherited. A team devoid of talent and confidence. He’s starting from Ground Zero and is doing a fabulous job! He’s engineered some great wins this year (Illinois, GT, Tennessee,SC, and Vandy.) Imagine what he’ll do when he actually gets some depth in the lineup!

I’m not stupid enough to guarantee a UGA victory in Jacksonville in 2010. We have blown it way too many times when we shoud have won like 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006.

However, I work with a gator and he admits that the loss of charlie Strong is huge for Florida. Not so much the x’s and o’s but from a recruiting and motivation standpoint. As UGA has proven with Martinez, a talented defense with no emotion and no ability to motivate and make in game adjustments equals a disaster.

I’m excited about Grantham and his staff and his attitude. Now it has to filter down to the kids.

So long as we have a couple guys talented enough to get a pass rush, I have a feeling Grantham will have guys hitting hard and playing much better this year. The defensive style of Martinez was failing so greatly, we don’t need to have more talent on defense this season than last to be significantly better.

I really hope Richard Samuels can be a beast on defense. He’s definitely fast, and what didn’t work as a tailback may be great as an LB.

FSU
“Will some explain what is so great about the new DC Grantham”
Saban tried to hire Grantham before he turned to Smart. Tells me alot about him.

“other than the fact his name isn’t Willie?”
Addition by subtraction. Willie got nothing out of this team that has multiple NFL draftees just this year.

“He is just a NFL def. line coach”
He’s held a variety of college and NFL jobs, including NFL DC where he was reasonably successful without much talent. He lost that job due to managerial turnover not his individual success, because he was an undeniable success.

“and can’t work miricles without great players. GA doesn’t have alot of great players coming back”
That’s where you are wrong. Our freshmen and sophmores on defense were quite good last year and were extremely strong recruits.

“from a sorry def. last year.”
Yeah, could have been better. Hence why Martinez is gone.

“The 2 best def. tackles graduated”
3, but fortunately we have depth and are switching systems anyway to one where different types of DT’s are needed.

“and Richt’s 2010 class doesn’t have many def. studs.”
Look at the class again. It is ****ing loaded. We have 2 safeties/OLB that could start from day 1, plus 3 DL that are among the top handfull overall prospects in our state. Plus some more for depth. Our class may have been small, but player for player it is among the best in the country. Look at the rankings again for the players we’re actually relying on in the near future and you’ll realize it.

Richt got FSU to 5 National Championships as Offensive Coordinator.

We’ll need the Offesne to carry Georgia for these 4 games because each opponent scores over 30 points a game (luckily–all have weak defensive staffs):
Arkansas, Fla, Ga Tech, Auburn

Grantham’s D can handle the rest of the schedule easily.

Grantham can absolutely turn it around in 1 year, he’s already done it for the Colts and Browns.

So, yes, it will be done by Grantham in 1 year, no doubt about it.

Hiram Dawg

I doubt ranking the assistant coaching hires accomplishes much, other than wasting life’s limited time. But all indications are that Lakatos is a fine coach. I’m glad Dawgs searched to find a qualified candidate – that goes for Grantham and Belin too. Would have been much more concerned if they hired another inexperienced homey (Bobo, McClendon) or one of Richt’s old buddies (Martinez, Van Halinger). Hiring people who are actually qualified for a job usually produces results.

Lakotas Great Hire

February 18th, 2010
10:12 pm

What will more likely happen is UGA will score 7 more points than 2009 on offense, and give up 7 less points on defense.

That’s a 14 point swing.

2 ways to do it, offense 7+ and defense 7-, or just defense 14-.

Defense has been so bad, at 28 points a game, that will be easy to improve by 7-14.

Offense is bringing back 10 starters, should improve by 5-8 points.

Gators are out of whack this coming year on coaching side. Too many changes. 2 of the defensive coaches will be coaching positions they have no experience in. Nobodies worked with LB’s before. And the DE coach is switching too. Thinner on the D without Charlie.
