An $85 million year for UGA athletics, Albert Jackson’s status, and other notes

– The UGA Athletic Association’s latest financial projection is that it will generate $84.9 million in operating revenue for this fiscal year, up almost $5 million from the previous fiscal year.  Operating expenses for this fiscal year, which ends June 30, are expected to be $69.5 million. The rest of the revenue will go largely to debt payments and into reserves, with $2 million going to the university to support academic programs. Athletic Association reserves are projected to reach a hefty $60.2 million by the end of the fiscal year.  All of these figures come from financial statements provided to the Athletic Association’s board of directors.

– Look for Georgia center Albert Jackson, benched for Saturday’s basketball game against South Carolina after he was arrested Friday, to be back in action soon. “Albert is still with our group,” UGA coach Mark Fox said on the SEC teleconference,  “and we should see him back this week.” The Dogs play at Tennessee on Wednesday and at home against Alabama on Saturday. Jackson, a senior, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for arraignment on a June 2008 misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run of a parked vehicle.

– If you’re pining for spring, you’ll be glad to know that baseball season is right around the corner. The college season opens Friday, with David Perno’s Bulldogs in Waco, Texas, for four games in three days -– two against Baylor and two against Duke. The Dogs, ranked No. 22 in the Baseball America preseason poll, open their home season on Feb. 24 vs. Presbyterian.

– Back to basketball. Georgia has a winning record in SEC games at home (3-2) but is one of just two SEC teams (LSU the other) without a league victory on the road. Of course, LSU doesn’t have an SEC victory anywhere (0-11).

– And what are the odds of this? Georgia’s loss at Auburn last Wednesday evened the all-time series between the Dogs and Tigers at 87-87. And Georgia’s win against South Carolina on Saturday evened the all-time series between the Dogs and Gamecocks at 47-47.

– The preceding note got me to wondering: How many SEC schools does Georgia’s men’s basketball program have an all-time winning record against? Just one: Ole Miss.

–  And if you missed it, check out this interesting story by my AJC colleague Carroll Rogers on the role Roy Williams has played in Mark Fox’s coaching career.

How much of UGA’s revenue is budgeted for bailing out their felon-athletes when they’re arrested? :-)

Yellow Fuzz,

Better book your room early in Athens for UGA-GT. I wouldn’t want you to miss UGA running over GT again.

After reading the blog for the past three days, about the QB battle, and all of the posts, nobody is mentioning what will be the most important factor in determining how successfull the Dawgs QB(and offense overall) will be this coming year.

If the Dawgs can carry the momentum over from last year in our running game, the offense will be successful no matter who the QB is.

Look at the MNC’s from the past four years; LSU, Florida and Bammer. Besides awesome defense, it was the running game that lead them.

These teams would establish a solid ground game, wearing out opposing defenses and setting up their passing games. When it was 3rd & 2 late in the game. What would those three teams do. Run Hester, Teabags and Mark Ingram up the middle. They knew it, their opponents knew it, the fans knew it, and they did it anyway and would convert the first down.

If UGA can establish their running game like they did the final four games of the season, the QB(whomever he is) won’t have as much pressure put on him. Later in the season Bobo can start to open up the passing game, even opening up a game passing out of play action.

I don’t know about yall, but i’m not comfortable putting the South Carolina(2nd game of the season) game in the hands of a red shirt freshman. Give the ball to Ealey and King and let them pound it.

That game at Tech last year was beautiful, starting the game running nine consecutive times(or whatever it was) leading to a scoring drive off of the 1st possesion. It sent a message; We’re going to hit you in the face and when you get back up, we’re going to hit you again!

call it ‘three yards and a cloud of dust’ if you want, but we all know that despite all of these challenging passing schemes out of spread formations, the running game is still where it’s at.

Now, if we can just do something about that defense!

I wonder how much it cost UGA to buy Albert Jackson out of the arrest charges against him. Oh yes, he’ll be back soon.

The dawgs are rolling in millions and can buy whatever they want!! Top coaches, the best facilities—all it takes is big money!! Tech’s broke and can’t even afford a decent weight room. But, the varsity has good hot dogs!

Georgia tek doesn’t have anything that is better than UGA except for # 35 US News and World Report National University Ranking Georgia tek to UGA # 58.

Yellow Fuzz,
Your picture is next to the word IDIOT in Webster’s. The SEC no longer participates in the Independence Bowl.

Tim, you must have been reading my mind because I was thinking after the Auburn game last Saturday that UGA led NO ONE in the SEC as far as all-time wins are concerned. You’ve answered the question for me! Sadly, UGA used to lead Florida by a hefty margin, but that has changed since Billy D arrived and Gatorville became the “Hollywood” of Division 1 athletics. Good news is Georgia has a number of wins over Kentucky since 1978 and also had doubled Tennessee in series wins since the mid-eighties up until Bruce Pearl arrived. Now it’s a little more even. Overall, UGA has done fairly well since Durham arrived in ‘78 with the exception being probation years and breaking in a new coach.

What this town needs, is just another newspaper. One that the AJ-C doesn’t reduce its price to 10 cents to run out of business again. If all you want to be and all you are going to be is a Georgia tek newspaper, just let it happen, please. Today’s paper is a joke of a Georgia tek newspaper.

Sports Pages will be the reason everyone at the AJ-C loses their job.

Because once we have fair and balanced between Georgia and Georgia tek sports’ reporting, the AJ-C is out of business.

Football is no different.

UGA does not lead LSU. 12-15-1.

UGA does not lead Auburn. 52-53-8.

UGA does not lead Alabama. 25-36-4.

UGA does not lead Tennessee. 16-21-2.

UGA does not lead Harvard 0-1.

UGA does not lead Holly Cross 0-3.

UGA does not lead Houston 1-2-1.

UGA does not lead Miami of Ohio. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Michigan. 1-1.

UGA does not lead Navy. 0-2.

UGA does not lead Rice. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Stanford. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Syrcause. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Wake Forest. 1-2.

UGA does not lead West Virginia. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Nebraska. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Penn State. 0-1.

UGA does not lead Pittsburgh. 0-3-1.

UGA does not lead Texas. 0-3-1.

UGA does not lead Texas A&M. 2-3.

UGA does not lead Southern California. 0-3.

There are many more we don’t lead, but you get the drift.

UGA does lead Florida but when it was 44-22-2, now it is 47-39-2.

3-17 will do that.

Lots of money coming in, and lots of good things happening. Coach Richt significantly upgraded his staff. Coach Fox will do some great things in basketball. Upgrades to Stegeman, a plaza planned for Sanford Stadium and much more. All of this is great, but it’s time to think big! Use part of the reserves to start the project to expand the seating capacity of Sanford Stadium! We can easily add 8000 to 10,000 seats in the West end zone! Come on guys! I’m sure some GT engineers are looking for work and would design it for us. It’s not like they are busy with their stadium!

Only UGA -obsessed GT fans would still brag about a two-year old win that history shows was clearly an aberration. Of course, we’re the only true rival you have. GT/Clemson is a semi-rivalry that would be decent if either team ever turned out to be good. If we played Clemson, GT/Clemson would be even less significant. More teams list UGA as a rival than any other team in the country. UF, Tenn, AU, SC, GT. If UGA played Clemson we’d be just behind SC among their rivals.

BTW Ealey and C. King were both among the nations top 10 rushers for the week of the UGA/GT game.

While watching the US speed skater win the gold medal last night (by 18-hundreths of a second) over the South Korea guy, I couldn’t help but wonder if that would have qualified as a severe “a$$ kicking” or “beat down” if he had been from uga.
