Talking with the QBs: ‘I believe in my heart I can win the job,’ Logan Gray says

(Third in a series.)

It’s been an interesting year for Logan Gray. The 2009 season started with many Georgia football fans calling for him to play more in relief of -– or in place of –- senior quarterback Joe Cox. And the season ended with rumors swirling that Gray would switch positions before spring practice, leaving quarterback for perhaps wide receiver.

Turned out, the calls for more playing time were unheeded and the rumors were overblown.

So after a 2009 season that saw him rarely on the field, Gray, who will be a redshirt junior in the fall, looks forward to a spring competition with Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger, both of whom will be redshirt freshmen, to succeed Cox as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. (Note: Recent signee Hutson Mason, the record-setting Lassiter quarterback, won’t arrive in Athens until the summer.)

Gray, Mettenberger and Murray met last week with beat reporters who cover the Bulldogs. I’ve previously posted  transcripts of the sessions with Murray (click here if you missed it) and Mettenberger (click here if you missed it). Now, here’s the interview with Gray, a dual-threat quarterback who signed with the Bulldogs out of Rock Ridge High School in Columbia, Mo., and, it should be recalled, was rated the nation’s seventh best QB prospect by ESPN as a high school senior.

There’s been so much talk about a position switch. Did you think a lot about that, or were you a quarterback in your mind all along?

Gray: I’ve thought about it some. I think ultimately I just want to try to do what’s best for me and what’s best for our team and helping out the team. I’ve thought about it, and nothing has really changed, dating back to anytime really. I’m planning on playing quarterback. If it doesn’t work, I’m not, like, opposed to playing receiver or trying to play defense or whatever it may be. Ultimately I just want to try to help the team win and, you know, contribute.

Did the coaches leave a decision on a possible position switch up to you?

Gray: The coaches never really even confronted me about the whole issue. It was kind of interesting that all this whirlwind talk started brewing up and everything because it seemed to me like Coach [Mike] Bobo was planning on me playing quarterback through the spring. . . . This spring I am planning on playing quarterback.

So how do you view the quarterback competition going into the spring?

Gray: I feel like obviously we’re looking for a starting quarterback, and I feel like I can compete for it. And after last year, I didn’t get quite as much experience as I would have liked, but I feel like I’m ready to go this spring and I’m excited about spring practice and what’s going to happen. Obviously we get caught up so much in these individual battles and stuff that we forget sometimes that we’re still Georgia and the whole goal is to win games and get better as a team. Obviously I want the best player at quarterback to play who’s going to help us. If it’s not me, I’m going to try to contribute any other way I can.

How did you cope  with all the will-he-switch-positions talk?

Gray: There’s always going to be stories coming up about something. That just kind of got brought up somehow. It didn’t really bother me. I stopped talking to the media for a little bit at the end of last year, just to let it all clear over and not be a distraction from the team or anything like that. Like I said, I’ve just let it all smooth over . . . and we’ll see what happens on the field before everybody starts talking about this or that.

Do you see the quarterback competition as all three candidates being on an even keel, or inside the program do people view someone as the favorite to win the job?

Gray: I would like to hope that everything is on an even keel, but obviously the coaches have in mind what they think is going to be best for the team. So we’ll see what happens. Really, there’s nothing that me or Zach or Aaron can do besides give it our best shot and do everything we can to prove to the coaches we should be the No. 1 guy. I guess all you can really worry about is yourself. I’m just trying to focus on what I can do and not worry about what other people are doing.

How did you stay positive after not playing as much as you thought you would last season?

Gray: I think everybody on our team has just got to keep a straight-ahead mindset going, especially after a tough year last year. There were a lot of things, besides me maybe not getting as much playing time as I would have liked, that just didn’t go our way. But obviously dwelling on anything that happened in the past is not going to get me anywhere, so I’ve just been trying to work hard this offseason and do what I can to get better and get stronger and get faster and make sure there’s no way they can keep me off the field, even if it’s not quarterback.

How much pressure did you feel last season when you’d get on the field for such short stints [i.e., one play]?

Gray: That was one of the toughest parts actually. You’d come in for a play, and maybe that play didn’t work. Maybe you got a zero-yard gain on a run play or something. You’d try not to, but you’d be stressing because you’d want to make something happen so bad so that you could get more plays or get more opportunities. . . . We’ve all got a clean slate coming into this year. And we’re 0-0, so get back to work. And spring practice will just ultimately be big in deciding what’s going to happen in the future.

How much have Aaron and Zach grown as quarterbacks [since enrolling at UGA in January 2009]?

Gray: They’ve definitely grown a ton. I think coming in early helped both of them a lot. They’ve been through spring practice before. Just maturing from from a knowing-what-to-do standpoint and a comfort standpoint is probably the biggest thing. I think that’s with any young quarterback; it takes a little while to get the comfort behind center that it takes to be successful with the game speed that goes on.

The three of you bring different things to the table. Will that make the competition potentially harder to judge?

Gray: Possibly. Maybe you’d see exactly where everybody stood if they all had the tall, strong arm or [were a] fast guy like maybe me. I think ultimately the coaches are looking for who is going to be the most consistent, who’s going to be a leader of this team, who’s going to be able to provide playmaking skills that will help us win ballgames. Whether they get it done one way or the other way, whoever is getting it done best is going to be the guy.

Just to be clear, you expect to play quarterback exclusively this spring?

Gray: Yes. Yes.

You expect to win the starting job?

Gray: Yeah, I think you’ve got to have that mindset. If you’re not expecting to win the battle, then there’s really not a reason to compete, you know what I mean? So I’m trying to do everything I can to win the job, and I believe in my heart that I can win the job. So we’ll just see what happens when it comes time to compete.

What do you think about sports fans’ tendency to focus on the newer guys [in this case, freshmen Murray and Mettenberger]?

Gray: It’s definitely something that [happens in] all sports. ‘What have you done for me lately?’ Or, ‘who is the new up-and-coming guy?’ There’s always going to be excitement about the young guy. It’s crazy that even people were saying stuff when Matthew Stafford was playing here or other great players [were playing here] at different positions: ‘We got this other guy coming in; he’s going to be really good.’ But that’s just a part of it. You can’t worry about it. . . .  If you’re worried about other things beside yourself, you’re going to be focusing on the wrong thing.

Thanks for reading these interviews, folks.

I know dawg fans don’t want to hear it but this qb situation looks really bad. I think the Logan Gray kid proved he just doesn’t have it at qb. And the fact that there is no clear front runner and that the likely starter will be a redshirt freshman with zero sec experience. This is bad, bad, bad. You can try in vain to put lipstick on this pig of a situation at qb but the fact of the matter is that its still a pig. I’m not hatin on the dawgs but I think they are in some serious trouble at the all important qb position.

As for Brantley at Florida he will settle in nicely. He has been the undisputed backup for 2 years, has taken a lot of reps both in practice, games, and in spring games. This guy is the real deal and he will be stepping into a starter’s role with a great deal of confidence. Sorry dawg fans but that’s just the way this neutral fan of an sec west division team sees it.

Murray better then Tebow? That’s funny, when Tim was a true Freshman he scored all three touchdowns in the LSU game alone and got the ball in the end zone twice in the National Title Game. Then he led Florida to another National Title as a Junior, then another 13-1 record as a Senior. Murray might not even be the starter and he probably won’t contribute to one National Title let alone two.

It’s going to be fun to watch, 1 QB will get the job and the three others will be unhappy campers most likely on the bench. Then it will be extra fun when UGA loses a game the fans will be questioning the QB choice.

END QUOTE of B.S. about 8-4 David Greene’s Freshman Year 2001

LOST 2001 to South Carolina # 13. David Greene.

LOST 2001 to Florida. David Greene.

LOST 2001 to Auburn UNRANKED 7-5 team. David Greene.

LOST 2001 to Boston College # 22 otherwise aren’t ranked David Greene.

David Greene’s Freshman year, you seem to have forgotten altogether. We were UNRANKED in the Final ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll and in the AP Poll barely made the list. The win over what ended up Tennessee vols as # 4 in the nation was the ONLY WIN OVER A TOP 10 Final AP Poll Team in David Greene’s entire career. Then, he went to the NFL and stunk up every preseason game, and I do mean stunk it up. David Greene’s NFL career ended with him NEVER MAKING 1 SINGLE SNAP in the NFL. We read your B.S. about David Greene’s Freshman year and liken that to Aaron Murray will do this year, summarizing that as we will be OK.

8-4

We play 14-game seasons nowadays, and you think we will be just fine and the same as David Greene did his Freshman Year 2001 with 8 wins including the bowl game.

Bubba, we have another 8-win season this season in a 14-game season and Coach Richt can hit the road son.

Whether you join him or not, doesn’t matter to me.

END QUOTE of B.S. by atl-xmen about Matt Stafford Freshman Season

LOST 2006 to vols, # 25 otherwise they aren’t ranked – obviously too. Stafford

LOST 2006 to Vandie UNRANKED a 4-8 team for God’s sake. B.S. Stafford

LOST 2006 to Florida, Matthew Stafford his Freshman Year scored 14 pts vs Florida

LOST 2006 to Kentucky UNRANKED Vandie and KY not good teams. Stafford

4 LOSSES AGAIN Matthew Stafford’s Freshman Year. In a 14-game Season, Matthew Stafford never got to play 14 games. That is because he was eaten alive by SEC East teams. Never got out of his own Division. Then, I come in here and you say, atl-xmen, that Matthew Stafford’s Freshman Season was great beyond all measure. LOSS to VANDERBILT and LOSS to KENTUCKY and LOSS to TENNESSEE vols and LOSS TO FLORIDA. The ONLY SEC East team Matthew Stafford beat in his Freshman Year was South Carolina, and he PROMPTLY corrected that the next year going out and LOSING TO South Carolina 12-16 to start the 2007 season and followed that right up with the LOSS to the Tennessee vols 2007 to make it 6 in a ROW SEC East teams who beat the crap out of Matthew Stafford. But, according to YOU atl-xmen, the way you recall 2006 Matthew Stafford’s freshman season, his 4-LOSS SEASON is better than what you expect of Aaron Murray you say for this season because, well, no one can go out his Freshman Year and have the kind of year that Matthew Stafford had his freshman year for UGA.

Your near future absolutely lies with A. Murray. Judging from his sr. year in HS when he won state coming off a broken leg (or arm?). This is the 10th year of this Coach Richt Era, and you say that the reason why we LOST 3 games against teams UNRANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25, another LOST game to a team who is ranked but who beat no one in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, and LOST to a team who was slaughtered by Alabama is that we didn’t have 3 Juniors and 6 Sophomores on the Offensive Line last year. Whose fault is that ? Mine ?

Presumably we ALL have to tell everyone that UGA has been better than Florida in the Coach Richt Era. That you are NOT going to allow anyone to say otherwise. Sorry, I do not find that supportive of The Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program. I find it the statement of blind idiots. We are simply not who you say we are. We have not been who you say we are. In a 14-game seasons nowadays we average 10 wins. We are 3-8 vs Top 10 SEC Final AP Poll teams in the entire Coach Richt Era. We are 17-19 vs Top 25 Final AP Poll teams in the entire Coach Richt Era. We have LOST 8 games vs teams UNRANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll. We fumbled the football 23 times last year and threw another 17 interceptions along with 105 Penalties. We do the same thing EVERY YEAR. atl-xmen you have more excuses than a Pregnant Nun. Just whose fault is that after 10 years now, we have 6 Juniors on the OL this year and 2 in all other classes atl-xmen ?

3 OL recruited 2010 by Coach Richt 1 # 90 in the country another recruited injured.

3 OL recruited 2009 by Coach Richt 2 are not considered that great coming in.

3 OL recruited 2008 by Coach Richt 1 again not considered great coming in.

8 OL recruited 2007 by Coach Richt 2 are JUCO gone now, 2 more from Hargrave Military School with grades issues of which 1 got a snap in only 2 games all season last year Harden, another who is ranked # 71 in the country who misses run block after run block, another who has taken a snap in only 14 of 39 games since he was recruited and didn’t play all of those 14 games in other words took a snap in less than a third of the games since he was recruited, another not considered that great who has only seen a snap in 13 of the 39 games and only started 3, another Chris Little who never took 1 snap not 1 and left the program the same week Coach Richt announced 2 others had left for off-field arrests/suspensions of which Coach Richt has had WAY TOO MANY OF, and so there you have your salvation, your great OL line class of 2007. Of the 8, only 5 remain and then you redshirted 1 of the 3 from 2008 giving you 6 Juniors this coming season on the OL. Now, you know who they are.

5 OL recruited by Coach Richt 2006 and yet we only have 3 Senior OL this coming season. Of the 5 one was ranked better than # 90 in the country. 1. And, of course Boling was arrested/suspended for the Opening Game the year before last.

1 OL recruited by Coach Richt 2005 Ian Smith who was not considered that great.

2 OL recruited by Coach Richt 2004 and 1 of those 2 was not considered that great, never got a start for UGA took a snap in only a couple of games and then quit the program after just 2 years.

What in the hell did you expect to have happen with this kind of recruiting 10 years into the Coach Richt Era now with this chronic recruiting for the OL.

I come in here and say how poorly we have done at recruiting consistently for the OL for every year since 2001 when Coach Richt started this lack of OL at UGA a recurring them never-ending. And, you ? You run in here and spin that into we didn’t have a good OL last year.

D.A. That is what I have been saying all along, only you use it as an EXCUSE.

Whose fault is it that we have recruited OL like this the entire Coach Richt Era ?

That being said, What did the coach’s see we didn’t. Your back up fielding punts is a little unusual. Someone had this to say about Brantley” As for Brantley at Florida he will settle in nicely. He has been the undisputed backup for 2 years, has taken a lot of reps both in practice, games, and in spring games.” Really Joe Cox was a backup for what 4 years and how did that work out? Anyone that thinks Brantley is a true veteran of the SEC wars…is either nuts..or a Gator or both.

Can anyone actually name a punt returner that got injured? I’m sure there has been, but surely too has the scout team QB. And no more than running drills, and lifting weights. Or chasing skirts.

Not sure that proved anything about his future.

Meyer 0-2 Against Auburn

I see Patrick, the little jerk that makes up stats and records is back. Brantley
had more than 40 snaps in 2009. Patrick you know nothing, he was 36-48 in passing
alone. Florida is normally about 50- 50 with the pass and run, so I would estimate
he had 80-100 snaps. That would be 4-5 times the dawgs QBs.

“We have the greatest recruiting class in HISTORY.
Chomp, Chomp.”

I can see that. Since the second place SEC team last year was the Greatest team in History, I suppose finishing second to USC would also qualify for Greatest Recruiting Class in History too.

If Meyer thought Tebow’s arm was any good, he wouldn’t have been calling so many running plays risking injury.
