You hear about the move by the NCAA Football Rules Committee this week to further toughen the unsportsmanlike-conduct/excessive-celebration penalty?
The penalty, which stirred much controversy hereabouts when it was incorrectly called on Georgia’s A.J. Green against LSU last season, will get tougher in the 2011 season if approved by one more NCAA committee.
Basically, the change would make unsportsmanlike conduct a live-ball foul, meaning, for example, that a taunting gesture en route to a touchdown would nullify the score and be penalized from the spot of the foul.
The change would not impact penalties for celebrations in the end zone after a score, such as the one against Green, because those dead-ball fouls would continue to be assessed on the ensuing kickoff or extra-point/two-point conversion attempt.
Of course, the problem with the Green penalty was that it never should have been called. The SEC said two days later that video evidence did not support the flag, which came after Green scored the go-ahead touchdown. A 15-yard penalty was assessed on the ensuing kickoff and jump-started LSU’s game-winning touchdown drive.
At the least, the Green penalty underscored the subjective and inconsistent nature of such calls.
And now the stakes could be raised.
This week’s move to toughen the consequences of live-ball unsportsmanlike-conduct flags came in a Wednesday vote by the Football Rules Committee. In a comment posted on the NCAA’s website, committee chairman (and Oregon athletics director) Mike Bellotti says:
“Our committee firmly believes in the team concept of college football. Taunting and prolonged individual acts have no place in our game, and our officials have generally handled these rules well. This is just another step in maintaining our game’s image and reflecting the ideals of the NCAA overall.”
The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel must approve the change before it can take effect.
What say you about this?

The only problem with making the penalty so harsh is the fact that the refs are as inconsistant as humanly possible. So, if a ref makes the call and a TD is nullified only to be determined days later that the call was bad and should not have been called, do they add the TD and the score is adjusted? Is this the biggest issue college football has? Why dont we just go ahead and make it touch football why we are at it? Complete BS

anybody listening….don’t penalize the team,…throw the offender out of the game…ours or theirs… I don’t care….I prefer the Hershel style of play…score a TD, pitch the ball to the official, trot off the field…if they get thrown out of a game twice in one season, suspend the player for the remainder of the season…if they ain’t getting the message, then up the anty until they do….

Tim Tebow never once in 4 years, got called for it; that’s what I think about it.
Alabama never gets called for it.
Ohio State never gets called for it.
Southern California never gets called for it.
Texas never gets called for it.
Boise State never gets called for it.
The replay booth needs power over these infrequently unequally applied calls.
And, I find it fascinating after 4 years of gator chomps after plays by Tim Tebow that the NCAA decides to emphasize these calls, now.
I also say that it is a bad rule change which will affect UGA Bulldogs far more than any other school because we don’t coach our kids on offense a thing.

I am quite certain that if you were able, that all you would want to allow to be posted are feel good posts by DISNEYdawg posters of how The Bulldogs all of a sudden with no quarterback of any experience against any opponents, and zero coaching changes on the offense are going to do something about what has been ailing our Offense for the entire Coach Richt Era.
Is it the coaching ?
Absolutely it is the Offensive Coaching that has ailed The Bulldogs on Offense.
How could it not be ?
I mean EVERY fan at Sanford Stadium has reigned down BOOS on the play calls.
In 2006 when Matthew Stafford played all 13 games, we had the NCAA Number 79 Passing Offense, the NCAA Number 90 Total Offense, the NCAA Number 70 Most Penalties in the nation, and we topped all that off with 22 FUMBLES and 16 INTERCEPTIONS.
In 2007 with Matthew Stafford how was it again that The Bulldogs AGAIN are the NCAA Number 84 Passing Offense ? How is that ? Good coaching ? The NCAA Number 74 Total Offense, the NCAA Number 85 Most Penalties, and we added in for good measure 18 FUMBLES and 10 INTERCEPTIONS.
In 2008, with Knowshon Moreno , we had the NCAA Number 56 Rushing Offense. Good Lord, with Knowshon Moreno. How should we view this ? We had NCAA Number 116 Most Penalties, and threw in 10 INTERCEPTIONS and 19 FUMBLES.
In 2009, The Bulldogs are the NCAA Number 80 Passing Offense again, the NCAA Number 75 Total Offense AGAIN, the NCAA Number 113 Most Penalties AGAIN, and contributed 23 FUMBLES and 17 INTERCEPTIONS.
.
We are going to be so much better this year on offense with the same coaching staff on offense whom YOU boo, obviously.
But heaven forbid, call me not a Bulldog, for daring to admit uh it’s the coaching on offense. Did you bother to ask the recruits of this great state with all these all-star Offensive Players why we didn’t get ANY of them ? You don’t want to face that either.
Let’s just call him, not a Bulldog.
DISNEYdawg, that’s you.

If they really want to clean up this game they should start by banning theses imbeciles from tattoo parlors, piercing parlors, and take some hedge clippers to some of these smelly, greasy mops dangling foot or two out of their helmets!
Now, just wait, someone will follow my comment with the “I have me’s zuh tattoo, eeoorangs, braids and conrows, and da ladezz thanks I be good looken as hail…and I am pursing an aerospace engineering degree at GA TECH.”

Green pushed off, pass interference s/b called and take the TD back. 4-4 in the SEC. UGA needs to quit dancing and singing and learn how to be student/atheletes.

Refs can’t consistently enforce the rule we already have…so the answer is to make the rule more complex and leave even more interpretation up to the officials? You gotta be kidding me.

Let’s think about this. There is a rules committee and they probably all fly around and meet somewhere. It is like the government – the best job they could do would be to do nothing. However, because they exist, they feel the need to act. It is a power thing mixed with beauracracy. Does college football, which has been around for 100+ years, REALLY need a group of old guys to change a rule every year? This committee should meet every 5 to 10 years and maybe make a suggestion for one or two rules adjustments then. Otherwise, they are just trying to justify their own existence.

As soon as a college kid comes up with a new way to have fun, the NCAA comes up with a way to squash it. Is’nt it a little hypocritical of them to do it AFTER Haysoos Tebow is gone. I’m as open a christian as anyone. But to wait until the most marketable college player ever , leaves , to institute this rule is as blatently hypocritical as you can possibly get. Leave these kids alone.

Well, I’m all for sellabrating but there needs to be just a couple ways.
If you are on offense and you score, you need to drop your pants, pull it out, and yell “Stop this, mo fo,” to the defense.
If you’re on defense and make a big play, you need to get to pee on all the players on offense.
That’s the right way and the Dawg way.

Rotten rule. After every touchdown / interception / sack… all you do is worry that someone will do something stupid. Tighter restrictions will only make it worse.
Is it me, or are the yearly tweaks hurting the game? Leave it alone already!
