Another SEC defensive coordinator joins $700,000 club

$700,000-plus appears to be the new going rate for defensive coordinators in the Southeastern Conference.

South Carolina’s Ellis Johnson had his annual compensation doubled to $700,000 yesterday when the executive committee of the school’s board of trustees approved a contract extension that adds two years to his contract (through 2013).

That makes Johnson one of four SEC defensive coordinators who’ll make at least $700,000 this year, joining Georgia’s Todd Grantham ($750,000), Alabama’s Kirby Smart ($750,000) and LSU’s John Chavis ($700,000).

Only one SEC defensive coordinator made more than $450,000 last year.

Smart and Chavis got  raises of $390,000 and $250,000, respectively, after being pursued for the Georgia job. Johnson got his $350,000 raise after reportedly being offered the Tennessee DC job by new Vols coach Derek Dooley.

Georgia is paying Grantham, who spent the past 11 years as an NFL assistant, about $425,000 more than it paid former defensive coordinator Willie Martinez ($325,815 last year).

The run-up in SEC defensive-coordinator salaries started last year when Tennessee paid Monte Kiffin, now at Southern Cal, $1.2 million in base salary. But the SEC’s next highest paid DC last year, Chavis, made $450,000.

Its not like that money leaves the economy anyway. It will either be spent or invested and that will employ quite a few people.

Hey ga gator, you may want to hire a DC before smack talking! Last time I checked your DC stayed for about a month. Was it a money issue? Being a coach on a staff for Chan Gailey cannot be considered job security.

UNDER Richt

Vs. SEC foes: 43-22
.
Vs. Top 25 foes: 29-18
.
Vs. Top 25 foes away from home: 18-12
.
Vs. Top 10 foes: 8-6
.
In postseason games (bowls and championships): 9-3
.
In games decided by a touchdown or less: 34-14
.
Record at home: 47-9
.
Record on the road: 27-6
.
Losses to unranked teams: 6
.
Top 25 finishes: 8
.
Top 10 finishes: 6
.
Fact:………UGA was 12-1 in 2002 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Fla was 12-1 in 2006 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Not UGAs fault there were 2 unbeatens that year. “unlucky”
.
Fact……….Not Flas credit that there was only one unbeaten in 2006. “Lucky”
.
Fact:………Luck (not merit) had more to do with Fla getting an invite to the BCS not that Fla was more deserving to go to a NC than UGA with identical records.
.
Fact:………No SEC team has ever lost a BCSNC game and if UGA would have been invited nothing indicates that it would have been different
.
Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal amount of total wins (90) over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team at 6. Fla has only been ranked top ten 3 times in 9 years (real impressive).
.
Fact……….In 9 years under Richt no SEC team has more wins

Fact………..UGA has won 4 str8 bowls….more than any other SEC team.
.
Fact……..UGA has won 11 of last 13 bowls…Thats more than any team (tied with LSU and more than FLA)
.
Fact…… UGA has won 8 or more games in last 13 years…more than any other team in the nation including Fla.
.

Fact…….UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years. Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.
.
Fact…….UGA had same record when they won the SEC title in 2002 as Fla did in 2006/8 when they won the SEC title. But UGA had the misfortune (luck) to have that record in a year that had 2 other teams with undefeated records.
Hardly an indictment on UGA but rather on the NC selection process.
6 times finished in the top 10
2 times finished in the top 3
3 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Titles
3 BCS Bowls
2 Sugar Bowl wins
90-27 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage (one of only 7 in the history of college ball to have ever accomplished this)
4 str8 bowl wins
7-2 in bowls (big games)
Mark Richt coached QB coach for Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke = 2 Heismans; Head Coach for David Greene = all time winningest college QB until Colt McCoy this year); and coached Matthew Stafford = very rich #1 draft pick)
No Probations
He has my respect.
Period.

Ok, we hire Chavios for 700,000. LSU hires Todd Grantham for 700,000. Chavios was making 400,000. UGA owes LSU 300,000 for the next year only. That’s how you stop this circus.

1-3 against UF the past 4 years
2-2 against KENTUCKY the past 4 years and a late INT from 1-3

Hard to argue that UF is the one weak point.

UA Alum92….in those 4 years since the SWECCG UGA finished 2nd in the nation once and top ten at least once more.

Last year Richt suffered a brain fart and allowed his loyalty to place UGA in a losing situation. He should have fired Martinez years ago and NEVER should have played Cox.

and 2008 …..clearly losing 18 scholly players to season ending injury had something to do with those 3 losses. However, complaining about only 3 losses with that kinda injury problem shows just how spoiled we are as UGA fans due to Richt keeping this program at a high level for so long its disappointing even when they “only” win 10 games.

patrick

February 12th, 2010
11:08 am

Sanjeev……….have you not been keeping up?

please educate yourself prior to writing your propaganda. Richt has finished in the top 10 six out of his 9 seasons at Georgia (yes he finished #10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll last year, the same poll that hands out the BCS Natl Championship trophy).

You have to be very lucky to win a Natl Championship – Florida would not have been in the Natl Champ game in 2006 without USC inexplicably losing its final game to Karl Dorrell and UCLA.

Look at LSU in 2007 and the circumstances in which that two loss team made the championship game.

Richt simply has not had that kind of luck bestowed on him yet – matter of fact he should have been playing for the Natl Championship in 2002 and 2007 if not for some luck of the opposite kind.

Its interesting to note that UF and LSU have won national titles with the same record UGA had when it won its two SEC titles. Its not that UGA is not as good of a program as either of the two, they have just been luckier than UGA. And that’s the truth.

But thanks for playing

ga gator, It doesnt mean we have to win every season, but we have to at least be “equal” to UF over a period of time…….say we go 3-3 over the next 6 years and then we are in contention, the NATIONAL MEDIA will look at us differently. Also, we have to beat UF when they are up, not just in the down years. We need to beat UF when both teams have top 10 teams takking the field.

patrick, the truth until we ever get a playoff, no one really knows who the best team is. What the current system does is reward “popular” programs and punishes the rest. It makes head to head rivalries even more important. When you have a conference with 2 divisions, it will be extremely difficult to have a team that came in second in their division play for the NC.

Look, Bill Curry had a very good record when he was at Bama (26-10 or so) but he couldn’t beat Auburn and that was enough to let him go no matter how unfair it might seem. Unfortunately, if CMR continues to lose to Florida and fail to make it to the SECCG, I just don’t see the Athletic Department keeping him around.

Worst Fans in the SEC East

UF has 3 national titles in the past 15 years.

LSU has 2 national titles in the past 10 years.

UGA has none over the same time period.

All that UGA has is excuses. The coaches and the writers did not think UGA was worthy that one year. In a year that they couldn’t even win their conference championship. Did they even win their division that year?

End of story. Game over. You can show all the data that you want. But you won’t even acknowledge that UF has owned you over the past 20 years.

Again, nothing but excuses. Injuries? Really? EVERY team has injuries. It’s part of the game. And if you had ever played any team sport then you would realize and acknowledge this fact.

Patrick – you are way too defensive. Lighten up a bit! No one questions Coach Richt’s value to UGA…..after all, UGA was missing in action for the years 1983-2001. No one wanted to listen to Bama fans talk about 12 national titles, 21 SEC titles, 55 bowl games, etc. when Bama was not winning. It is not relevant to the NOW. With each passing day, Bama’s wins over Florida in SEC game and win over Texas in BCS game become less relevant. I hate that, but that’s the way it is.
Coach Richt and UGA need to get a grip and win some more games. A key to doing so will be not giving up more than 30 points 8 times each season. Presumably, Coach Richt has been addressing that issue.

Seems to me that because CMR spoke with Chavis and Smart that lead to both of those respected programs to give their DC’s significant raises. Then CMR hires CTG for roughly the same amount of money.

Could a case be made that CMR “forced” two rival programs to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars more than what the programs had intended to spend on a DC?

Which in point causes USC and FLA to increase their spending on DC’s. Seems to me that UGA got their DC and forced their rivals to spend out as well, which means that UGA forced the marketplace.

Not certain that I am willing to label CMR with setting forth quite an economic backlash but I am certan that after letting CWM go that UGA sat down and evaluated their finances and what they could do with their money.

Whether you like it or not, UGA “backdoored” a win as far as forcing others to change not becaue they wanted to but because they had to.

Mark Richt cant coach?

Hmmmmm……. 2008 for example….

1. UGA lost 18 scholly players to season ending injury PRIOR to game 3.

2. UGA then proceeded to merely win 10 games

3. UGA then merely proceeded to win a bowl

4. UGA then merely ended up ranked 10th in the coaches poll.

5. All of that with a SOS of 8

Now I challenge anyone to name a single team that lost that many scholly players that early in the season where a coach was able to be that successful.

I will order pizza and hopefully by the time it arrives someone can point out that other team.

The bottom line is that Georgia has been one of the top 5 most consistently winning programs in Div. 1 over the last 9 years. But to consider UGA’s “greatness…we can look at hard facts not opinion polls

No SEC team has more wins, more bowls, more bowl wins nor a better OOC record than UGA over last 9 years under Richt.

But if you want to also use opinion polls then lets look at the simple fact that no SEC team has been ranked more times in the top ten than UGA.

Sooooo UGAs not great. Hmm then what does that say about the other teams that have not done better. (all SEC teams)

You’d have to be a fool to want to coach under Urban Meyer. The only reason his coaches stayed as long as they did is because of Tebow. As soon as Tebow was finished they all bailed out on Meyer. He’s known to be a self absorbed pompous ass that takes credit for everyone elses hard work.He lies to recruits and thier parents and will soon show his true colors to the Gator Nation when they don’t live up to expectations over the next few years. Sure they had a great recruiting class but whose going to coach them up?….the new coaches they hired don’t scare anyone in the league….most are cast offs from other programs that have not succeeded. The Gators are in for a long season in 2010.I see at least four or five losses on the horizon for them….Can’t wait to watch Meyer cry and have a melt down on TV. One thing for sure..he’ll point fingers and blame everyone but himself.Count on it!
