Newly hired Georgia linebackers coach Warren Belin will get a one-year contract at a salary of $190,000, UGA said this morning.
Belin, a 20-year coaching veteran who coached linebackers at Vanderbilt the past eight years, was hired by Georgia on Friday.
He essentially replaces John Jancek, fired on Dec. 2, on the staff. Jancek’s base salary last year was $163,000.
Belin was the final hire to replace the three defensive coaches fired in December. Todd Grantham got a three-year, $750,000-a-year contract when hired away from the Dallas Cowboys as defensive coordinator and Scott Lakatos a one-year, $180,000 contract when hired from Connecticut as defensive-backs coach.
Belin will coach either the inside or outside linebackers in the Bulldogs’ new 3-4 defense, but UGA hasn’t yet specified which group Belin will oversee. Grantham will coach the other linebackers group.

Belin is a proven coach.
LB’s held Florida to less rushing yards than Tenn or LSU.
LB’s lead SEC in tackles, lots of ALL-Conference LB’s every season.
Nice addition.

Is there anything in these contracts to help us retain these coaches if they perform well? I realize we wouldn’t want to get stuck with new faces who won’t perform for us, but please tell me a guy like Lakatos isn’t going to be back on the market after turning around a porous secondary at a school like Georgia.

Another Dawg: The Belin and Lakatos contracts are one-year deals, but there is a significant buyout in Grantham’s contract. Here’s a link to details:

I agree, Benoist and all those smart boys up in Nashville have been tearing it up, and I know they didn’t rely on talent alone. Belin is a great addition and should help bring some accountability to the Dawgs defense.

I love the fact that he’s a recruiting coordinator. So you take him and team him up with Garner and Bobo (who’s a great recruiter) and you will instantly see that UGA will climb back up the latter in recruiting. I think when the new DC mentioned about if UGA could sign the best players out of the state how great the team will be, I think he was giving a sign as to the new direction that UGA is heading in. I think this hire of Belin has just as much to do recruiting as even coaching linebackers. And another thing in play is he was a special teams coordinator as well. So he is bringing a lot of needed experience to the staff.

Lakotas Great Hire
February 11th, 2010
10:36 am
Lakotas DB’s shut down South Carolina and held them to O Td’s and a dismal passing performance in the Bowl game in 2009.
In fact, Lakotas DB’s outperformed Florida’s DB’s against South Carolina.
Lakotas finished in the top 10 in the NCAA for pass defense 2 times recently with Big East level talent.
UConn was also great at forcing takeways, and committed the least penalities of any NCAAA team in 2009.

Grantham brings 20 years of experience to the table and coached under Beamer and Saban. Proven results at quick turnarounds. Pro Bowlers & Best Year Efforts galore under his coaching.
Grantham recommended to Richt by Smart, Muschamp & Foster.
Grantham trains Bama coaches in off-season and was offered the defensive coordinator position by Nick Saban.

I think that there is passion on both sides that makes this rivalry great. UGA fans outnumber Tech fans by a significant margin though, and there are a lot more of the trashy, trailer park fans on the UGA side.
There are a few bad apples on Tech’s side too- but it doesn’t compare with the trash on UGA’s side.
UGA’s fans are worse.

More arrests, more criminals. UGA leads the SEC in off the field arrests.
And the classless UGA fans scream “but they are only misdemeanors! Misdemeanors are ok!”
Hate to see what these fans’ kids will turn out to be. Stay classy Dawgs.

The scariest thing about all of this in the SEC is that Georgia fans seem content to say our players behavior is not as bad as at Tenn and Fla.
Sooner or later UGA fans will be justifying that our players have fewer murders committed than Tennessee and Florida and are therefore well behaved.
UGA is another football factory. Nothing more seems to be desired it seems. Is it even a school anymore?

I wouldn’t call $750,000 for a DC a “steal” by any stretch of the imagination, but looks like a really good hire. Looking forward to the rebirth of the great “Junkyard Defenses” we had under the great Erk Russell. Agressive, attacking defenses every team in the SEC feared playing. Go Dawgs!

I like where we’re headed as a team right now. There’s loads of talent on campus, 10 returning starters on offense should be able to generate some points the first few weeks to give our D time to adjust to new system / positions. I’m looking forward to seeing a defense that is proactive instead of reactive….DB’s making plays on the ball, LB’s rushing the passer and anticipating screens, etc. If we can get a QB in there to make a few plays I think we’ll be alright. Nobody’s picking us to have a great year, which usually turns out to be the times we succeed.
I guess life’s about expectations.

Tech fans started everything and it can all be traced to Saint Simons, who wouldn’t shut up for a year straight after Tech’s ONE win over the Dawgs in 9 tries in 2008.
Georgia fans won’t stop now (nor should they) in response to what we had to read on every single blog from Saint Simons and his nerd chronies. Tech knows damn well how evil and annoying some of their fans are and we’re sick of their yapping.

I can’t say that our ‘behavioral problems’ are all that bad. Yeah, we’ve had the driver license issues and underage drinking, but not a rash of major criminal activity.
Am I justifying these misdemeanors? Definitely not, they need to be dealt with. But, to compare them to armed robbery, murder, theft of a dead girl’s credit card, drug possession…..UGA’s are pretty tame. I don’t think you can just write off the above transgressions as “poor judgment” as much as you can riding a scooter on a sidewalk or the dreaded “Emerging from an alley”. Is it apples to oranges? I think it is.

I think Belin is a great hire. I think he will be an awesome fundamentals guy for the LBs, a great change for Special teams and added bonus on the recruiting front (although winning seems to be the best tool for recruiting).
I also think Lakatos is a great hire. I think he also has the teaching ability to get the DBs fundamentally sound.
The big question will be how well they all work together. You have four outstanding defensive coaches, but they are also a coaching team. Their ability to work together and teach the players fundamentals and their roles in the new 3-4 defense will be more important than who plays where. I think Lakatos, Garner and Belin are all 4-3 guys, so they also have to learn all the variations of the 3-4 scheme as well so they can teach the players.
