Let’s talk football: Murray on arm, Samuel on LB move, Mettenberger on improvement

Athens — Let’s talk some football this afternoon.

I’m at the Butts-Mehre building, planning to talk with a number of UGA football players. Hoping to chat with Richard Samuel about his move from tailback to linebacker, with Logan Gray about whether he intends to remain at quarterback for the duration, with Aaron Murray about whether his arm is 100 percent after last fall’s tendinitis, and others.

I’ll post updates through the afternoon. Please check back.

————–

UPDATE 1:

Richard Samuel seems very happy about the move to linebacker.  ”I feel like I’ll be more comfortable, be able to play more freely at linebacker,” he said.  He said coaches pretty much left the decision up to him about whether to remain at tailback or move to linebacker.

He said his biggest problem at tailback was blocking. “I couldn’t block correctly and keep a good pocket for the quarterback,” he said. With the play of Caleb King and Washaun Ealey at the end of last season, “my future wasn’t looking too good at running back.”

He said he’s gaining weight for the move to linebacker. He’s up to 230 now.  His goal is to start at linebacker in the season opener.

————————-

UPDATE 2:

For those wondering about the health of Aaron Murray’s arm: He says it’s 100 percent fine, thank you.

Limited by triceps and forearm tendinitis for a big chunk of his redshirt season last fall, Murray said he is not worried at all about his arm now.

Recounting last fall’s problem, he said: “I just tried to push through. It inflamed up and spread throughout the arm. I didn’t give it the proper rest I should have. If I had, I would have been out a week instead of going four-five weeks without throwing. I learned from that. This off-season I’m doing a lot more shoulder maintenance, making my arm strong, building the endurance.”

He said the arm didn’t bother him at all the final month or so of last season and through bowl practices.  He said extensive medical tests revealed no problem beyond tendinitis.  He said he’s currently throwing three or four times a week. He said he doesn’t expect any setbacks with the arm this spring.

But he did say the missed practice reps last fall “set me back a good bit.”

As for the upcoming quarterback competition with Zach Mettenberger and Logan Gray, Murray said: “I view it is pretty much anybody’s job to take right now. I’m looking forward to spring, going out there and working as hard as I can. It’s my goal to get that position. . . . It should be fun. It’s going to be interesting. Off the field, we are not enemies; we hang out,  go out to eat. It’s not [a competition] where we will go out there in hatred. We’re just going out there to win a position. . . . Two days ago, Zach and I went throwing with Marlon [Brown], helping each other with footwork and mechanics. . . . It’s going to be a friendly competition, and in the end the best guy will win.”

————————

UPDATE 3:

OK, about all those rumors of a possible position switch for quarterback Logan Gray.

Gray said he expects to play quarterback exclusively in spring practice, and although he acknowledged giving some thought to a position switch, he said the rumors were overblown.

“I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t think about what my options were, but I just think it’s too early to make any decisions,” Gray said. “I’m just going to keep on playing quarterback. If there comes a time where I’m not going to be playing or contributing and I  think I’d be better off somewhere else, then maybe I’ll make a decision.”

He said the coaches never approached him about a possible position switch for spring practice.

“It was kind of interesting [when] all this whirlwind talk started brewing up and everything,” Gray said, “because it seemed to me like Coach [Mike] Bobo was planning on me playing quarterback through the spring.

“I feel like obviously we’re looking for a starting quarterback, and I feel like I can compete for it. Last year, I didn’t get quite as much experience as I would have liked. But I feel like I’m ready to go this spring, and I’m excited about spring practice and what is going to happen.”

If there comes a time when it’s clear he has no future at quarterback, Gray said, “I’m not, like, opposed to playing receiver or trying to play defense.”

——————–

UPDATE 4:

Still no official word on whether newly hired linebackers coach Warren Belin will coach the inside or outside ‘backers, although LB Chase Vasser said today, “I want to believe it’s inside, but not 100 percent on that.”  Whichever group of linebackers Belin coaches, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will coach the other.

———————–

UPDATE 5:

Zach Mettenberger, whose shaky completion statistics in preseason scrimmages last summer caused some concerns in Bulldog Nation, said he is “10 times better than when I came in.”

The 6-foot-5 Mettenberger said he has lost 18 pounds in the past year, from 255 to 237, and has improved his footwork to the point that it is “as good as the other guys’, if not better.”

All three quarterbacks said they expect a highly competitive battle for the position in spring practice, which will run from March 4 through April 10.

“It’s definitely a big spring for us three quarterbacks,” Mettenberger said. “It’s pretty much going to determine who’s going to be the quarterback for possibly the next couple of years. We’re all excited about the competition, and we’re pushing each other to be the best we can. Whatever happens happens. We’re still going to be friends at the end. And it’s whatever Coach Bobo decides.”

————————-

UPDATE 6:

Here’s wide receiver Marlon Brown summarizing the different styles of the three quarterbacks:

“Zach can throw the ball 100 yards. Zach has a cannon. And Logan, he’s been here three years and is real smart and so he knows the offense better. And Aaron, he’s just an all-around guy [who] can make a tough throw and he can run. They’re all pretty good.”

Patrick – seriously, you’re an idiot and I’m embarrassed to be a Dawg fan if you’re indeed one as well. More so, I feel ashamed for having spent two total minutes of my life bantering with you…what a waste of my time!

patrick, and if we had of won the SEC East in 07 maybe we could have played for the NC. Bottom line is Richt has UNDER ACHIEVED! If he doesn’t win the EAST again this year we need a new coach.

Richt is 21-4 against Arizona State, Boise State, Boston College, Clemson, Colorado, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Name another coach with that success with D1A BCS schools. (I added BSU even tho they are not a BCS AQ team because tehy are that good)

I would not put it on winning the East in ‘10 but the bar needs to be raised. ‘10 will have growing pains, a new QB and complete defensive scheme. Winning the SEC East is setting the goal a little high for firing a coach.

Coach Richt is .840 against teams from automatic BCS-qualifying conferences.

Name another SEC coach that can compare

patrick, yes and 2-7 against the Gaytors, lost at home to both Vandy and Kentucky. If you are happy with that fine; but most of us are sick of it and the Richt apologizers.

Richt just needs to convince our team that we can beat UF. SC plays us tough every year because they think they can beat us. We don’t think we can beat UF! Think about it…

1. The first time we beat them, they were bad.
2. The second time we punched them in the mouth and danced in the end zone.
3. The year following that…We were scared….”Oh no, how is Urban Meyer going to retaliate?”

CMR has to get us over the mental block of the Florida Gators.

There are those in Bulldog Nation Fla Dawg) who would like to see Mark Richt run out of town on a rail. Such people should be turned over to the custody of Mike Leach, in the hope that he will treat their obvious head trauma the way he treated Adam James’s.

Mark Richt isn’t perfect, and his few deficiencies (perhaps because they are so few) are glaring, although some of them—for instance, the loyalty that caused him to retain Willie Martinez at least two seasons too long—stem from qualities that are admirable and have helped produce such favorable conditions as the stability that anchored a string of ten-win seasons.

The sacking of three underperforming staff members answered a lot of critical questions about Coach Richt’s toughness and demonstrated his continued fitness for the job.

I hear your frustration with CMR and share some of it but for
crying out loud could we get sense of perspective here about the
strides that have been made. Before CMR we had not even been to
a SEC championship game. It should all be about celebrating the
future of this program because CMR has shown he understands where
we sit as a program by bringing in the needed staff improvements.
And as CTG has said if we can take care of business the right way
the talent in state is going to get us where we want to go.
Look around even rival bullshi**ers that post here sense the
the arrival of a new day.

There are areas in need of improvement, which are few yet important and obvious.

In recent weeks, though, we have seen concrete steps in the direction of correcting these flaws in the program.

Mark Richt’s recent efforts to restore Georgia football to its prior height serve as reminders of the heights to which he previously has taken the Bulldogs.

Thats not admirable?

Logan Gray better not step on the field unless its a mop up situation late in the game. If we cannot produce a better qb than him we are in for another awful season. I don’t like him returning punts either because of the fact that every punt seems to end up with a fair catch signal. Put someone back there like Branden Smith please!

You gotta love Logan Gray’s attitude. In the event it doesn’t work out for him at QB, I would definitely like to see him at free safety in lieu of receiver. I’m glad to see he is open to the idea of playing defense.

hey DEFENSE,

How many schools have a 6′ 230 lb kid who played LB in high school and dominated who runs a 4.4 40 yard dash? He just needs to get back to playing again on the defensive side of the ball. Speed will make up for a lot of the other deficiencies.

dawgs cheated in 2007????

lets look at that.

UGA was ranked higher than LSU and dint play the week LSU beat Tenn in the SEC title game.

LSU lost the last game of the regular season

LSU lost twice during the last 7 games of the year while UGA won all 7.

LSU leap frogged a idle UGA by 3 or 4 spots in the ranking.

Hmmm did they get cheated??? You tell me.

c'mon man

I really like our new coaches and think they will bring some fresh perspective and passion to the team. I also like the willingness of players such as Samuels to switch positions to help the team. Kind of think Logan needs to as well but know we need some QB’s also.

Go DAWGS! 30-24 the hits keep coming!

Tailback U, I agree CMR made great strides. CMR Ihope can continue to make gret strides. Donnan was a mistake. Goff was not prepared for the job. I do not blame him for taking the job, who wouldn’t take their dream job. Goff had UGA less than 7 points from a perfect regular season but he ultimately was not prepared for the job and UGA made a mistake hiring him. CMR has had much the same path early success but struggling to figure out how to finish the job. Now obviously CMR’s worst has been better than where Goff slid to. I look forward to the future. Defense and special teams should be vastly improved. CMR needs to get back to his 5+ min game killing drives that were a trademark in the early years. I will be watching to see if UGA can do it.
