More SEC signees from Georgia than any other state, by far

MrSEC.com has done some numbers-crunching that quantifies this state’s status as a football recruiting hotbed.

The website counted 65 recruits from Georgia who signed with SEC schools last week, including the 14 Georgians among UGA’s 19 signees. Every SEC school except Mississippi State signed players from Georgia.

No other state came close in terms of the number of players signing with SEC schools.  The next largest number was from the state of Florida: 46.  Then 37 from Mississippi and 36 from Alabama.

In all, SEC schools signed  305 players from 23 different states, MrSEC calculated, with 21.3 percent of the league’s total signees coming from Georgia. UGA signed players from only three states: Georgia (14), Florida (4) and South Carolina (1).

Go here for much more data on the topic. Interesting stuff.

This what a bad class of recruits can do for your program. Look at AUBARN;S 2005 CLASS. What a joke. No wonder TUBBERVILLE was run out of town. Hardly anyone was a success. Coaches better be sure they can get good players. Read article below.

22 recruits
5 out of 22 transferred
2 academic casualties…………..1 of the 2 never played. Did not qualify academically

Only 8 out of 22 had somewhat of a decent career. A feww ALL SEC performers are in that 8.

What a terrible class. This makes you want to go throw up if anyone had this kind of recruiting class. Majority were over rated.

Revisiting Auburn’s 2005 signing class five years later

While it’s easy for fans to get caught up in euphoria of a highly rated signing class, it’s worth remembering that only a handful of the players in any given class will turn into stars.

Some will have productive careers. Some will leave school early due to injuries or academics. Some will never make it to campus.

Earlier this month, Huntsville Times sports writer Paul Gattis looked back at the 2005 signing class.

This class, signed on the heels of the 2004 undefeated season, has largely moved on. Redshirt seniors just completed their final year of eligibility in 2009. Only Aairon Savage, who has received a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA, will be around in 2010.

There were some hits and misses in this class. Some of the higher rated players were misses (see Tray Blackmon), while some of the success stories came from less-heralded players like Sen’Derrick Marks and Jerraud Powers of Indianapolis Colts.

Here’s the fully tally. See how many names you remember five years later…

Ulysses Alexander: Receiver redshirted as a freshman, then transferred to Florida A&M.

Montez Billings: Caught 55 career passes but left the team before his senior season.

Tray Blackmon: Five-star signee at LB but never fulfilled promise amid injuries and suspensions; left team after junior season.

Antonio Coleman: Two-time All-SEC at DE, finished third in school history with 23.5 quarterback sacks.

Robert Dunn: Caught 44 passes and excelled as punt returner in four-year career.

Oscar Gonzalez: Seldom-used backup lineman as redshirt freshman, then transferred to Howard.

Mike Harness: Rated the nation’s No. 2 center, attended prep school and never played at Auburn.

Alonzo Horton: Played in nine games as backup as redshirt freshman, then transferred to Jackson State.

Zach Kutch: Handled kickoffs part-time for two seasons, transferred to Illinois State and named first-team kicker in Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2009.

Sen’Derrick Marks: Three-year starter at DT, made 113 tackles before leaving after junior season for NFL.

Andrew McCain: Signed as a TE, became starter at tackle as a senior and played in 32 games in career.

Gabe McKenzie: Caught 13 passes as TE each of first two seasons, spent junior season at DE before not catching a pass as senior back at TE.

Walt McFadden: CB started final 25 games of career and named second-team All-SEC as senior.

Rudy Odom: Spent career as backup OL, appeared in two games.

Jerraud Powers: Intercepted six passes in starting 23 games at CB before leaving after junior season for NFL.

Prechae Rodriguez: Junior college signee, caught 38 passes with TD receptions in three seasons as backup WR.

Aairon Savage: CB named All-Freshman SEC but missed last two seasons with knee injuries.

Rex Sharpe: Failed to qualify academically, went to junior college and spent two years as a backup at Minnesota.

Patrick Trahan: LB declared academically ineligible after his freshmen season, went to junior college and played the past two seasons at Ole Miss, finishing fourth on the Rebels with 69 tackles as a senior.

Tommy Trott: Two-year starter at TE who caught 45 career passes with four TD receptions.

Brian West: DT never played at Auburn before transferring to Houston in 2007.

Jonathan Wilhite: Junior college All-American, started 21 games in three-year career with 101 tackles and three interceptions.

Urban Meyer's Gamble in 2010

Meyer is rolling the dice on this one strategy:

Top Recruiting Class Beats Top Defensive Staff

ga gator…just to give you a clue, I graduated in 1975 from UF. I received my M.S. there in 1978. So I’ve been around the block a few times. I have seen both sides of the equation. I have also seen what lasts and what doesn’t. What Jeremy has built at UF was not overnight and will not be gone overnight. Will there be a day when that might not be the case?? Sure, but this a solid foundation built and now Florida has an established tradition that it can build on. So my statement about the program has nothing to do with being or not being humble…it is strictly a statement of fact.

ga gator – I think it’s a combination of both. Facts are UF is not only the winningest program in the SEC since 1990, they are #1 in the country. UF’s down period was Zook, and that wasn’t as bad as some claim. When people talk about UGA’s record against UF, while it’s true, it’s also not like we are alone. LOL UF has been a good program. But even so, Georgia is still high on this same list. Georgia TOO has been a great program, especially when you consider 1990 – 2000 were not stellar years. ;)

UGA is now where UF was in that, they must take back wins from UF and UT if they plan to succeed. UF is the only school Richt has a losing record to in our conference which is solid.

Powers is with Indy Colts
Marks is with Tenn Titans
Blackmon is in the CFL / Calagary Stampeders. He was a 5 STAR out of LaGrange Ga.

Although a little undersized for a typical national type linebacker recruit, Blackmon was considered a legit five-star prospect by several recruiting services. Scout.com ranked him #1 among the 2005 linebackers class.[1] The Player of the Year in AAA for the State Champion Grangers, Blackmon had 116 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 12 Sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, one safety, and one defensive touchdown as a senior.

Blackmon was rated higher than Powers or Marks, This goes to show you that these recruiting services miss alot on players.

Maybe it’s not recuriting or coaching, or the conditioning program, all we know is Meyer is 0-2 against Auburn. I think it’s pyschology–Auburn is just in Meyer’s head. Meyer is pysched out by Auburn.

Don’t know why/where the conversation about Auburn is coming from, don’t believe we have played them for a couple of years and I don’t see them on our schedule this year. I AM glad that Tommy Tuberville has moved on and is out of the conference and also that he didn’t end up at Tennessee or Miami. Yep, Texas Tech is just the right place for him, far away from Gainesville. And he tortured UF long before Meyer came along, like in Spurriers last year. Kudos to Gene Chizik and his staff for what they have accomplished so far, especially having to go against that monster in state called Bama. I am sure that the war of words between the two are full on, just like always…

Auburn’s been a sore spot for Coach Meyer, it bugs me, I can’t figure out why he can’t beat them at least once, wierd, 0-2, hard to believe, they don’t seem better than the Gators, so I just think they’re in Coach Meyer’s head.

Urban Meyer's New Role Model: Charlie Weis!

February 9th, 2010
3:31 pm

We know Meyer used to coach at Nore Dame, but thinking that one #1 recruiting class will win you the National Championship the next year, I mean, seems like a Charlie Weis long shot. Meyer should have revamped the defense after they left. That lousy strategy will haunt him in 2010. Maybe they’ll pull a Richt in 2011 and clean house on the defensive side.

It’s all about defense in 2010 for UGA.

We need to get:

1) An average of 2 takeaways a game
2) Hold teams to an average of less than 13 points a game.

Do those 2 things, or even just the 2nd one, and we’ll go 14-0 in 2010 & 2011. UGA has the best punter/kicker. UGA averages 28-32 a game on offense.

Grantham will not let teams score much on him. Gonna be a blast!

Fact:………UGA was 12-1 in 2002 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Fla was 12-1 in 2006 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Not UGAs fault there were 2 unbeatens that year. “unlucky”
.
Fact……….Not Flas credit that there was only one unbeaten in 2006. “Lucky”
.
Fact:………Luck not merit had more to do with Fla getting invited to the BCS than whether Fla was more deserving to go to a NC with identical records.
.
Fact:………No SEC team has ever lost a NC game and if UGA would have been invited nothing indicates that it would have been different
.
Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal amount of total wins over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team.
.
Fact……….UGA 90 wins in 9 years no other SEC team has more.

Fact…… UGA has been ranked more times in top ten than any SEC team over last 9 years.
.
Fact…….UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years. Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.
.
Fact…….Coach Mark Richt in 9 seasons at UGA:
.
Fact…….UGA had same record when they won the SEC title in 2002 as Fla did in 2006/8 when they won the SEC title. But UGA had the misfortune (luck) to have that record in a year that had 2 other teams with undefeated records.
Hardly an indictment on UGA but rather on the NC selection process.
6 times finished in the top 10
2 times finished in the top 3
3 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Titles
3 BCS Bowls
2 Sugar Bowl wins
90-27 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage (one of only 7 in the history of college ball to have ever accomplished this)
4 str8 bowl wins
7-2 in bowls (big games)
Mark Richt coached QB coach for Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke = 2 Heismans; Head Coach for David Greene = all time winningest college QB until Colt McCoy this year); and coached Matthew Stafford = very rich #1 draft pick)
No Probations
He has my respect.
Period.

Come on sky high, while I am excited about the D, our boys won’t learn it overnight. And remember, Grantham isn’t in charge of our offense. Our OC runs a predictable, basic offense that good DCs shut down for quarters (and sometimes halves – LSU and sometimes whole games – UT) at a time. It’s gonna take Richt going back to the NFL for an OC after this season to get us back in serious, annual competition for the SEC.

Our defense was the problem. We let teams score 28 a game on our defense as opposed to SEC and National Champs Alabama who only let team’s score 11 a game. Those 17 points are the difference between going 14-0 and 8-5. We were last in the NCAA in takeaways–as poooposed to Alabama who averaged 2 takeaways a game.

Our offense has always been high scoring–we get around 30 points a game average over the last 3 or 4 years.

But Coach Richt fixed that.

It’s a new day in Georgia with the #1 defensive coaching staff.

to mr. “what?”

UGA is not in decline.

Several factors came into play over the last two years that made the end result undesirable.

1. In 2008 UGA lost 18 scholly players to season ending injury PRIOR to game 3 of the season. I cant think of another program hit that hard with injuries and yet Richt had them at 10-3, ranked top ten and won a bowl game. THATS ALL CAOCHING.

2. In 2009 Richt could not control Matt Stafford and Moreno leaving early for the draft. He was stuck with a horrible QB in Cox and he wanted to give his college room mate Willie M. another shot to show his abilities. That backfired on him. I guess he should have thrown Murray into the fire but UGA would have been 8-5 with a true frosh anyway so why not give a fifth year senior his shot.

But then you already knew all of this and didnt need me to tell you but you are only here to agitate.
