MrSEC.com has done some numbers-crunching that quantifies this state’s status as a football recruiting hotbed.
The website counted 65 recruits from Georgia who signed with SEC schools last week, including the 14 Georgians among UGA’s 19 signees. Every SEC school except Mississippi State signed players from Georgia.
No other state came close in terms of the number of players signing with SEC schools. The next largest number was from the state of Florida: 46. Then 37 from Mississippi and 36 from Alabama.
In all, SEC schools signed 305 players from 23 different states, MrSEC calculated, with 21.3 percent of the league’s total signees coming from Georgia. UGA signed players from only three states: Georgia (14), Florida (4) and South Carolina (1).
Go here for much more data on the topic. Interesting stuff.

Why Can't Meyer Win With His Own Recruits?

It’s odd that Meyer always quits before a year comes up when Meyer is forced ot be accountable for his own recruits. Meyer has never won an SEC or National Championship with his own recruits. Is Meyer a good coach?

What Happened to Meyer in 2009?

1) 22 starters returned from National Championship team
2) Charlie Strong runs the #1 ranked defense
Why couldn’t they win the SEC Championship, or win the National Championship?
Why? What happened to Meyer in 2009? Meyer had the talent? Meyer had the best defesnive coach? Meyer is supposed to be an offensive genius? What’s Meyer’s excuse? What went wrong in 2009?

One of the things I don’t think is being put into perspective is that somebody like Auburn now has 32/80 scholarshipped players true freshmen next year. So basically, almost half thier team has never played a college down. Would that make us all feel better to be that team? Obviously if you sign that many player you are going to on paper have better class. They did. If we revoked evey scholarship we had and signed 80 new players, we would have had the “best” recruiting class in the history of “best” classes. The Rivals scoring model would explode!(and I am not talking about the same best class in history, but not even the best of the year Fl class). Its all relative. Yes several schools signed more good player than we did. But that means we already had more players on campus than they did. Right?
Interesting article in the ABH how the loss of one recruit opened the doors for another. I pose the question, in what has been the onfiled issues lately, has it been the lack of a jumping jack flash WR, or the inability to get a push from the offensive line? I believe Rogers opening up the spot for the 6-5 300 OL , will be a quicker fix.

When Florida’s Spring practice opens, the kids will ask “where is CUM”?
The UF assistant coaches will look around the players and they will collectively say” he is um, ah not here but um, ah he is resting in Ocala and he will, um, maybe, but not sure, possibly be here on the day of the Spring game” and “let’s get to work”. The kids? They will be ticked to say the least.
Tebow will be puffing up his pillow for his mentor. Meyer? toast, done. F-R-I-E-D he is.

About the UGA numbers in recruiting, sir, you are 100% right. I have decided that on this site, here are some basic rules having to do with UGA:
1.) If UGA ( due to NCAA overall team #s regs) signs “only 19″ UGA is “a failure and Richt is slipping”.
2.) If UGA signs HUGE numbers due to high graduation rates or normal attrition with kids quitting, etc. UGA “has slipped, as their best players have quit on CMR”. SEE?
No matter how you cut it, the haters ( most of whom never, ever attended a UGA class, will bad mouth UGA out of jealousy. I suspect that they have never, ever even sat in on one SEC game.
Who cares anyway? UGA is the #1 team in winning at least 8 games over 13 years. Where is Florida or Bama or LSU or Oklahoma or Southern Cal? Whether UGA ever wins the NC, UGA is still a great program over all. Always has been always will be. Besides, the program according to Forbes magaine is one of the TOP BRAND NAME SCHOOLS …………this says it all, because we all know it is about $$$$. Money talks and smoke walks.
UT, Florida, Bama, LSU and too many like N Dame, Penn State, and S Cal and Oklahoma and NOW Michigan have wandered in the wilderness for a few years. To say otherwise is to reveal that the hater is only about 20 years old and un employed sitting at home on mom’s PC.

You new DC Grantham would give his right nut for this class:
ESPN’s Tom Luginbill called it “the best defensive group I’ve seen put together,” and Scout.com’s Scott Kennedy said “on the defensive side, there was not a miss anywhere.”
What they were talking about was Florida’s 2010 defensive recruiting haul, the centerpiece of which is the line.
Rivals.com rated defensive end Ronald Powell No. 1, defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd fourth, defensive tackle Dominique Easley seventh(these 3 just happen to be the #1 player from their state : NY, Penn. and CAL), defensive tackle Leon Orr 95th and end Lynden Trail 123rd overall. Likewise, Scout rated Powell second, Floyd sixth, Easley 12th, Trail 99th and Orr 255th. Both services ranked Powell, Floyd and Easley as five-star prospects and listed Trail and Orr as four stars.
The class was so loaded, UF coach Urban Meyer had to let defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat (Rivals No. 12, Scout No. 7) know there wasn’t room for him and his five-star rating. He eventually signed with Texas.

Total D1 signees this year per state:
Texas 408
Florida 353
California 323
Georgia 182
Ohio 171
Alabama 90
Mississippi 62
South Carolina 49
Tennessee 37
Kentucky 14
Ga and Ohio generally put out the same total number of D1 players signed each year. Texas, California and Florida overwhelm all other states – mainly due to population and climate.
Ga has more SEC signees than other states because of the in-state dawgs and surrounding SEC states.
Go to http://www.statemaster.com for more state stats and draw your own conclusions.

ga gator seems to have the best perspective of the UGA/UF series. Reality is UF has beaten us regularly since 1990. But to be fair, most have been close hard nosed games. All it takes is for one team to get an advantage, and a blow out can and does happen, on either side.
Since 1933 – the record is 38-37-1 in favor of UGA. A florida win would tie the series since the birth of the SEC.
As another posted stated, Georgia replaced it’s roster vacancies with strong players. That is all they wanted to do. DaRick blew it IMO as his position WAS one Georgia wanted depth in. But those things happen.
Georgia will be better next year than most expect IMO.

To add to my last post, since 2001, Richt has let the dawgs have losing records against one team in the SEC. Florida. The only other team to have a .500 record against Richt LSU at 3-3. If you consider, 2 of LSU wins game in one year, Richt is ahead winning 3 out of the 5 years they played.
UF? – Losing records to Auburn, Ole Miss, and .500 with Alabama.
UT? – Losing records to Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU and Alabama.
No point in arguing who is or has been best, but very obvious that UGA stays poised to be good enough to beat any SEC team.

Florida in decline,
I totally agree with you. Losing Tim Tebow , Riley Cooper and Brandon Spikes will be a huge loss for UF. No more sure first downs on 3rd and short anymore. I believe that was TT biggest legaciy is no matter what on 3rd down he would drive forward and get the first down and continue the drive. Now, without a power back they will have to resort to throwing the ball more. Yes UF is loaded recruiting wise but very few of those players will get on the field this year. Based upon this year alone, I like UGA’S chances of beating UF.

Reptile – you are mostly correct when you talk about what the press says. You can also add Miles into that equation. Saban has been getting the most lately. Hmm, wonder why?
The national press will crown whoever they think is best based on what they see. Let me ask this question, did Meyer become the best coach in college at the same point he accepted the job with UF? Before he was a candidate for UF, but yet after his impressive record in Utah, show me a headline where he is the best coach in the country. Press didn’t really care did they?
This is a tough conference and no, Richt has no BCS title, but is holding his own winning the best conference. His defense slipped with his choice for his 2nd DC, and he corrected that. I am very happy with Richt, because after 9 years of the pressure and stress associated with it, he has found what appears to be a balance of winning both on and off the field. Meyer has not, and in fact, his record shows he does put everything into his job which makes him great on the field. But I would be concerned with how long he can or is willing to allow this lack of balance in his life.
So your attempts to convince a real bulldog that we are not a great program on an Atlanta blog has me asking the question, why is it important for you to come here and say the things you do?

As I have said many times on this blog,UGA will be fine. Grantham doesn’t have to be great at Xs and O’s as Willie ran the same basic defense as Van Gorder. What Grantham has to do ( and he seems to be at least talking it) is change the culture from we can win, to we will win. No one at UGA has done that, at least in the Florida series since Spurrier changed the culture.

Bad news Dawgies…next year UF will start 4 seniors along the OL. They will have a 4th year Jr starting at QB. They will have 3 running backs who have played 3 years in system. They will have 6 returning seniors along the DL rotation. They will have 2 starting LBs with 3 years or more experience. They will return 2 safety starters and a shutdown corner. The only really big ? will be one corner and TE. When I looked over the roster after signing day, I was surprised myself at how veteran this 2010 team is. You will be too.

Meyer has to change the mindset against Auburn to “we can beat Auburn”. It’s just a mindset. Addazio’s running the same offense Meyer ran, and Heater’s running the same defense Strong ran, so nothing new there. Auburn’s clearly in Meyer’s head. Maybe the new coaches will help change the losing atmosphere around Auburn. Hard to believe Meyer hasn’t beaten Auburn at least once, geez, even Richt has beaten Meyer at least once.

Tider – I don’t agree with Grantham being best DC in conference. I think he has the tools and talent to be, but only time will tell. Moron’s was probably a little harsh, no?
ga gator – I think some have hit on what Martinez’s problem was. He was easy to scheme against. Our guys were not in position many times because they were not coached well. Grantham should have the experience to know how to scheme against an offense. Again, something the coach said about being aggressive. The defense will try to dictate what the offense does, know what they will check to and be ready to defend it. We have been playing give them this look and if they do this, then do that. Grantham will attempt to make the offense react to HIS formation, not the other way around.
IMO, Martinez never knew what to do defensively to disrupt the rythm of the opposing offense.

ga gator…it is neither scheme nor psychology. The cold hard facts are that the Gators are just a better program all the way around, with better coaching and recruiting. Even Ron Zook had a winning record against Richt and the dawgs because of the strength of the program and what Jeremy Foley has built there over the years. On signing day, when rival fans were all wondering how Florida could have such a historic recruiting class with all of the coaching changes and situation surrounding Meyer, Tom Luginbill said it best…The program is now bigger than any individual coach, even Urban.

The Gators keep losing because of the strength and conditioning program isn’t as strong as Auburn’s. Hopefully that will get fixed.
