New LB coach ‘looking forward to’ competing ‘for SEC and national championships’

Warren Belin

Warren Belin

The Georgia football team’s defensive coaching staff is whole again.

The final opening on the staff was filled this afternoon, when UGA coach Mark Richt hired Warren Belin from Vanderbilt as a linebackers coach.

The addition of Belin, following last month’s hires of Todd Grantham from the Dallas Cowboys as defensive coordinator and Scott Lakatos from Connecticut as defensive-backs coach, completed the makeover of a defensive staff that was decimated by Richt’s Dec. 2 firing of three assistants.

Belin is a 20-year coaching veteran who spent the past eight seasons as Vanderbilt’s linebackers coach. He also was Vandy’s recruiting coordinator the past two years and special-teams coordinator in 2006-07.

“I’m looking forward to the next step in my career with Coach Richt and the opportunity to compete for SEC and national championships,” Belin said in a statement late this afternoon.

A former Wake Forest football player (1987-90), Belin coached at SMU, William & Mary, Cornell and East Tennessee State before going to Vanderbilt, where his work drew Richt’s attention.

“Warren has had some of the best linebackers and tacklers in the league for years,” Richt said in a statement.

Richt added that when he and Grantham interviewed Belin, “we were very impressed with his knowledge of the game, schemes and fundamentals.  He’s going to be a perfect mentor for our players as well.”

Belin will share the linebacker-coaching duties with Grantham, who plans to convert Georgia’s defensive alignment from a 4-3 to a 3-4, meaning three linemen and four linebackers rather than vice versa.

Grantham said last month that he will coach either the inside or outside linebackers with the final hire –- Belin -– coaching the other. Georgia didn’t announce their specific assignments today.

The linebacker position added a player earlier this week when Richt confirmed that Richard Samuel will move there in spring practice. Samuel was Georgia’s starting taiback at the start of last season but had fallen well behind Caleb King and Washaun Ealey at the position by season’s end.

Grantham, Lakatos and Belin join the only holdover on Georgia’s defensive staff, Rodney Garner, who will coach the linemen. Garner also is  the recruiting coordinator.

“I look forward to working with Coach Grantham, Coach Garner and Coach Lakatos in installing the new defensive package,” Belin said. “My wife and family are excited about the opportunity to become part of the Athens community, Bulldog Nation and the great tradition at UGA.”

Belin and his wife, Yolanda, have three daughters: 7-year-old Camryn and 4-year-old twins Morgan and MacKenzi.

Great hire!! Vandy has had some of the best linebackers in the league over the last few years. Not household names, but solid performers on a defense that most of the time wasn’t that bad. If Vandy’s offense had been equal to it’s defense, they would have won a lot more games.

All in all the class was not that bad, however losing Rogers and missing out on C. Green, Boone hurt. Other than that, a good class. GOLDTIMER – I respectfully submit that both UCONN and Vandy did more coaching up than UGA coaches the last few years, I remember Vandy beating UGA fairly recently with much less talent (and but for a last minute fumble would have beaten us twice in the last 4 years). UCONN defensive backs have performed better than UGA’s the last 4 seasons. So, it seems pretty smart to actually hire coaches who have shown an ability to coach young players up to a level of performance that actually exceeds their recruiting “star rating.” It’s fairly obvious to anyone who has been paying attention that our recruits have not lived up to the hype.

Hooter Girl

Jeff

5:47 pm

Hey Goldtimer… yeah, way to criticize UGA’s coaching hires. That would be like Ga. Tech hiring a tired, old retread from someplace like Virginia to coach its under-achieving defense…. ooops.

Keep running your mouths, Tech fans… you’ll never have the upper hand in the series against Georgia, you will never be considered one of college football’s “elite” programs, and you’ll never win a bowl game with your gimmicky offense, since teams will have 6 weeks to prepare. LSU last year, Iowa this year… I rest my case.

Now, stay off the Georgia blogs. I don’t go on there and pi** on your comments and program news, so you have some respect and stay out of here.

Not all Tech fans are as classless as you, Goldtimer… but you make the decent ones look bad.

Personally, from those in the know (obviously not Goldtimer), all these guys are HIGHLY respected defensive coaches. I think they will do very well and Georgia will be on the rise in the coming years. Go Dawgs!

And Goldtimer, just to remind you: 30-24. Go sit on that.

Old Dawg

Goldtimer: always remember, Paul Johnson came from that football powerhouse … the Naval Academy. If you knew anything about football, you’d recognize that some of the best coaches come from smaller D-1, 1-AA and D-2 schools. Pat Dye coached at East Carolina and Wyoming before going to Auburn. Brian Van Gorder at a lower level D-1 school.

And Vince Dooley was the freshman team coach at Auburn before he became the head coach at Georgia. Urban Meyer started at a smaller schools before going to Florida.

Don’t assume to know a lot about football, or you’ll make a sticking assumption about yourself.

There are two sides to every coin and most jealous Techmites and other haters only see the down side to anything Ga related. Now on topic, this is a good hire. Between the UCONN coach and Belin, Ga has gotten a couple of hard nosed, fundamental teaching guys. This is a big upgrade over the last few years. And they can both recruit well

It’s going to take more than these new defensive coaches (although they look good on paper) to save Richt’s job. It’s going to take wins over South Carolina, Tenn, Florida, and Auburn. Actually he better not over look Arkansas or Miss State. Vandy and UK should be wins (but UK should have been 1 last year)

All you have to do is look at Richt’s record to see the decline. His 1st 4 years he was 42-10 or 80.8% and 24-8 in the SEC 75%.

His last 5 years 2005-09 he has gone 48-17 73.8% and 26-14 in the SEC 65%.

He can’t afford to go 4-4 or even 5-3 in he SEC next year or he will be in big trouble. Sorry, but the numbers just don’t lie.

I like this hire. Vandy for all but maybe one recent game with UGA ( 2009?) has outplayed UGA from the get go and yes, they do have fine D players and their HC is a fine coach. At any SEC school, he would do much much better. In 2005 or 2006 they handled M Stafford and he threw about 5 picsand we LOST. I must say, however, that i was NEVER a fan of MS and his pics and his no titles support me.

This guy will communicate and will coach and recruit and that is far superior to the three clowns that we’ve used for years at UGA. We ought to be much improved on D and I for one, am excited about 2010.

Doesn’t GT have a blog? I really don’t know as I have never had the urge to find out. My late father was a Tech grad and we both wished for both teams being undefeated and highly ranked going into Thanksgiving. Since taking over control of the family business after my father’s passing, I retained both of his GT former full-ride football players and even hired two more. I have two from the 70’s and one each from the 80’s and 90’s. All four are valuable associates and good guys. Unfortunately none made it through to graduate and are hourly waged associates. One was a 5-star recruit and I an uncertain about the others. So get off your GD GT high horses and slither back to your own blogs! No program is perfect and no recruit a ’sure thing’. Vandy’s defense alaways played teams tough. Vandy has a good coaching staff under Bobby Johnson. I have always been impressed with him. Vansy’s problem is not coaching and effort. It’s talent. It’s hard to compete with other schools don’t have the same tough admissions standards.

I played for 5 years under Bobby Johnson while he was at Furman University and i can guarantee you one thing. If you coach under him, you’ve got to be a disciplined, fundamentally sound teacher of the game. It is clear, that the last 8 years have been some of Vandy’s best ever and Belin has been directly responsible for the players they have been getting….I can’t speak for him as a coach, but I am great friends with their RB coach along with the offensive and defensive coordinators, but the fact that Belin has been with Bobby J for 8 years speaks volumes for the type of coach he must be. Every coach in the SEC, including Saban and Meyer, go out of their way to praise how well coached Vandy’s players are. If Johnson respected him enough to keep around a young coach that long, I think CMR has done a great job by bringing him on the staff.

JRW7 you are so right. UGA has not recruited a lot of top rated players. The intensity of the recruiting does need to be better. A 2011 LB has already said that UGA has not recruited him and he sounded a little hurt. Instead of offering just 20 players offer 50 of the best and you never know, you might actually sign a top player at each position. As i have said before look at the Rivals recruiting board and UGA didn’t offer a lot of the 4 and 5 star recruits that Texas, Florida, Ala., Okl., and Auburn offered. Look at the JC players that we didn’t offer that could have made a big difference. The style of recruiting really needs to change. More of a focus needs to be put on top players at each position from all over the country, not just in Ga, Fla, SC and I forgot I don’t think we even recruit the state of Alabama.

Would have been nice to get a few more, but just because it’s a small class doesn’t mean the quality isn’t there. if you are into star ratings UGA is just behind FLA in avg stars per player with this class. Defensive needs were addressed now let’s get these new coaches to coach ‘em up. Go Dawgs!

I have said for awhile that Vandy was one of the best coached teams in the SEC, especially on Defense. They are always in the right position to make tackles and are a fundamentally sound team. Vandy’s only problems are depth and overall talent level. This was a good hire and should prove to be very beneficial down the road.

I personally trust the coaches at UGA, and the recruits they brought in. They know what the Dawgs need (read D), and they know talent (read ’some stars’ are overrated). Have the Dawgs had an off year or two – yes! But don’t expect that to continue. The ship will be righted. The Dawgs will prevail. Look for tremendous improvement, and total domination of the SEC in the next 3-4 years. All of these bashing comments are nothing short of jealousy and fear. The tide is turning (sorry for the pun). The Dawgs will rule the SEC for the next several years, and rival fans are getting their dissing in now before the their comments begin to mean nothing. Next season, 11-2, the following season MNC! That’s right… you heard it here!

Coach Belin will not have as hard a time selling UGA to recruits as he did at Vandy. If you watched Vandy over the past few years they were very sound on defense and had several players from the state of Ga. on their team this is a win win for the Dawgs. Now Goldtimmer your knowledge of the Ga.Football program is not worth the time to waste writing about please go back under the rock that you crawled out from under. PT: Not sure if Chuck Smith’s G.P.A. has much to do w/ anything relevant. I think in recruiting he’ll probably just rely more on:
1. Showing off his Super Bowl XXXIII & Pro Bowl rings.
2. Describing his experience w/ training top NFL defensive talent.
3. Most importantly how much he benefited by leaving ATHENS after high school & playing ball up in KNOXVILLE.

Vols Rule -

You’re joking right? Let me once again lay out the Volunteer debacle:

1. The Vols hire Lame Kiffin, who does nothing in one year for the big orange, but get all kinds of NCAA recruiting investigators on your tail. See Hogate for more details.
2. Lane Kiffin causes a riot on UT’s campus after announcing he thinks your program is second rate, by bolting for SC. Death threats abound.
3. The Vol brain trust decides to go after the coach in waiting at Texas, who makes a million bucks. Will Muschamp promptly tells the Vols to taking a flying leap into the toilet.
4. Then the brainiacs in Knoxturd decide they’ll go after retired NFL coach, John Gruden. It takes Gruden all of one second to tell the Vols to get stuffed.
5. Then the Vols go after a homer in David Cutlcliffe, but he too jilts the Rocky Toppers by staying at Duke… of all places!!!
6. Desparate the Vols turn to the head coach of perennial SEC doormat LA Tech and steal away their head coach. Haaaaaaaaahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Get ready for an absolute disasterous season Vol fans, because you guys have proven over the last 8 years that things in Rocky Top land ain’t so good!!!

VolsRule will not be seen or heard from again after 2010. Sorry, but Derek Dooley will not last more than 5 years at Tennessee. Times have changed. Trying to compare him to Vince is ridicoulus. Vince won 6 SEC Titles in 25 years. This is a different time and place with BRUTAL competition that he is not ready for, He will never beat Urban Meyer or Nick Saban (and if he does, it will be maybe one win in six games). He will have a hard time defeating UGA because the players are going to be jacked to beat down that ugly orange after what Da’Rick “T-O” Rogers did (check the Twitter posts, they are already talking about the Tennessee game next year!) LSU comes on the UT schedule for the next two years, and they are LOADED as usual and will beat UT for sure in 2010. Tennessee hired their seventh choice, everyone knows that. Derek Dooley will do the best he can, but it won’t be enough to satisfy the delusional fans up there. By the way, Rogers will not qualify and will not enroll at UT for the 2010 season. He doesn’t have the grades. UT Football is a shell of what it was, and firing Fulmer was plain stupid.

Edwards leaving Florida after just accepting the DC job (less than 30 days) is disgusting. I’m sure Urban kept that on the downlow to all the defensive recruits signing wednesday to spend the next 4-5 yrs with Edwards. Kind of the same treatment UT early enrollees got when they found out Kiffen was leaving, Hamilton was nice enough to wait till after they were trapped to tell them their options. Looks bad on Edwards for even thinking about leaving , and it looks bad on Meyer for not telling the recruits and yes Meyer knew. Both schools looked pretty sleezy . Go DAWGS.

Last but not least you got beat down by your instate rival on your home field by a subpar GA team even though you Techies had the best team you have fielded in a decade. I would not go beating my chest just yet but if you do you might want to take the pocket protector out of your shirt beforehand so you do not injure yourself.

if this guy can teach a 4 star how to tackle things will be just fine. you ever heard that ole saying a blind hog can find an acron ever now and then. that’s the way ga. tackled the last 3 years ever now and then. play after play game after game ball carriers were hit behind the line by these shoulder hitters only to make big yards after the hit. you can’t waste a tackle for a lose on every series of down. i’ve never seen anybody run if they can’t move their feet.

Meanwhile, back on the subject….
I think this will be a great hire, a guy who has been able to do a lot with middle-of-the-road talent and smaller numbers overall. What he’ll be able to do with our better talent as well as the improvements he’ll bring to special teams looks very promising… and he recruits, too!

Great hire UGA! Jancek, the old LB coach, was a joke and was the reason our linebackers (minus Curran) couldn’t tackle anyone. Christian Robinson, Nick Williams, Marcus Dowtin, Akeem Hebron, Michael Gilliard were all 4 star linebackers and he couldn’t teach them how to tackle. Vandy has done a great job developing linebackers, so it should be a great hire!

I thought Mark Richt was too loyal to ever fire his coaches, but I was wrong, and he’s hired a really solid defensive staff. What Belin and the guy they hired from UCONN have done with 2 and 3 star talent speaks for itself. UGA’s defense should be much improved and hopefully they’ll tackle a lot better.

Just not when Ingram is running because no one can stop him.

Looks like just another night in paradise on the ol blog fellas. Me? my opinion ? Great hire, Vandy has, as has been pointed out, had a tough scratch and claw D for the last few years. I remember watching them and thinking, Now that is some smash mouth LB play. To those who would criticize this hire, I will remind you, Urban ‘ gotta take a break’ Meyer, coached Bolling Green before going to Utah. Got to get your start somewhere. Bama Stan good post…and I might even agree with the Ingram comment as he is a beast.
If you break down all the hires by Richt, this could easily become a great defensive staff. Grantham has a lot of experience in the NFL (graduate school for coaching as Grantham put it) coupled with two very good coaches that know how to coach up players. Both Lackotos and Belin did more with less…and we have been missing that on the D side of the ball for awhile now. In addition Belin was ST Coordinator for Vandy. Lackotos also has a good bit of experience with STs. It may take a year for everything to completely gel,but I think we have some solid coaches on the D side of the ball. All signs are that the UGA D should be heading in the right direction.

Solid, solid hire. Very pleased with this. Anyone who watches SEC football has remarked at one point or another how great Vandy’s linebackers are, despite being dealt 2 star athletes to work with. If there’s one thing aside from the secondary play that I was disappointed with in our defense in the past, it’s been the seemingly underachieving play of our linebackers. I expect that will change with Belin, and I shudder to think what he can do with 4 and 5 star athletes.

He should be able to recruit very well too, he’s already plugged in to the Atlanta area.

Vandy’s had a better defense than Georgia the past two seasons. So, either: (1) they’ve done more than georgia with less ability and therefore coached up lesser players or, (2) Vandy is good at scouting talent compared to Georgia (and the recruiting services)… Since Belin was the recruiting coordinator and a defensive coach, either scenario means Belin was doing his job well.

I am happy with the recruiting class. Roby was too small, DaRick got paid. We have a lot of weapons for the 3-4 coming in. These guys will have an easy time coaching up the talent we have. Look what Conn. did to S. Carolina in the bowl game. These guys will get it done. I already like hearing bring Anderson 328lbs over to the d to anchor the middle. We will create madness on all these teams with new QB’s. We will be a whole lot better. Mark my words: Dawgs will make it to the SEC championship within the next two years.

This looks like a really good hire. IMHO, we’re 3 for 3 in the off-season. I look forward to spring ball, summer practice and next year’s season. I cannot wait to see Richard Samuel backing that line. It only took 2 years for us to figure out that one of the biggest hitters in the history of Georgia high school football who was recruited by most schools as a linebacker should, er … uh … maybe … play linebacker. Hell, Willie should have been fired for not standing up to Richt on that issue 2 years ago. Speaking of Willie, why didn’t 5 cent Robey drag his 5′ nickel inch butt out to Norman to play for his beloved mentor? Seriously, good luck to both of them. Personally, I’m glad we’ve decided to play football instead of track&field. I am fired up about the new hires and our “lack of depth” at receiver. I do not think that our problems have ever been the result of too few skill players. Go DAWGS!!!!!!!

I figured we’d see both of them rotating all year anyway. I know Mettenberger is like a Ben Roethlesberger player, tall and heavy with a strong arm. Weird how they are both “berger’s”. He had decent stats that i saw in high school, just wasn’t fortunate to play for a good team with the athletes to help him shine. However, Murray threw for over 2000 yards in high school. That’s impressive. Right now, though, I dunno if I’m more excited to see what the QB’s can do with our high powered offense or what this new Defensive scheme is gonna do. I noticed they speak very highly of Richard Samuel as a linebacker. They say he has potential to be all-SEC and possibly even all-american

Red, I couldn’t agree with you more. Samuel will be a beast at linebacker. I am not one to question CMR and staff as they forgot more this week than I’ll never know but I never understood the Samuel at tailback thing. You are correct about the “hitting too hard” incident. It is a fact. He was asked by the officials to lay-off. The good news is that he’s smart too. He should be up to speed at the position by opening kickoff. I’m also happy that Kwamee was able to enroll last summer. He’s got to practice and, more importantly, get his academics squared away. I hope he plays nose-tackle instead of offense but, either way, he’s supposed to be a freak. (even by Geathers standards) Good things!

The best thing about our defensive coaches is that they know how to coach-up. Trust me, that is one of the most important traits you want in a coach. My guess is that we will have a top ten defense this year, but me thinks the offense is suspect; Bobo will be feeling the heat big-time if the offense under performs.

Messenger no doubt Bobo has been pretty predictible. Joe Cox just didn’t handle the pressure very well last year which made Bobo even more predictable. UGA began to establish the run game last year against UF but Cox wasn’t able hit the open receiver, poor decision making. Running the ball effectively opens up the play action pass , but the timing of the pass action is critical. It seemed to me when we started running the ball it meant running every 1st and 2nd down call, very few play action passes on 1st and 2nd down. Maybe Cox’s inconsistent play made Bobo more conservative. Regardly Messenger Aaron Murray will improve our QB play, he’s smart mobile and will not be denied. Hopefully Bobo can improve his thought processes during games by having Murray pulling the trigger. The penalties ? GO DAWGS

We can only hope the new faces will bring back the respect we expect.”

We will find out in 2010. How will he do without Percy Harvin or Charlie Strong.

How will meyer do in a rebuilding year where he lost 5 starters on offense, 6 starters ond efense, 5 Juniors quit and left for the NFL, and 5 coaches quit?

If Meyer wins a National Championship in 2010, we’ll agree it’s him.

If he doesn’t, we’ll know he got lucky.

Is Urban Meyer a Good Coach?

February 6th, 2010
10:17 am

Meyer can’t use the excuse, “I don’t have any players”, Meyer finished #1 in recruiting.

Problem is also an inexperienced QB, on top of losing 5 starters of offense, 6 on defense, 5 jrs who quit for the NFL, and 5 coaches who quit.

So if they don’t win the Natl Champ in 2010, with the best players, it’s Meyer’s coaching.

Here’s the Gators schedule for 2010:
Miami of Ohio
USF
Tenn (at Tenn)
Kent
Bama (at Bama)
LSU
Miss St.
Georgia
Vanderbilt
South Carolina
Appalachian St.
Florida St. (at FSU)

Predictions?
5 SEC Losses to Bama, LSU, Georgia, South Carolina, Tenn or Miss St.

Loss to FSU

Upset Loss to Appalachian St. (played in National Champ in Division last year)

6-6 realistically in 2010, 7-5 with some luck, 8-4 with a lot of luck

Note:
Meyer goes 5-3 in the SEC 40% of his seasons

Is Urban Meyer a Good Coach?

February 6th, 2010
11:02 am

So far, Meyer quits on a team during a rebuilding year. He’s never stayed in 1 place more than 5 years. Unlike Rcht, Meyer bolts when the going gets tough.

2010 will be the 1st time we REALLY see what kind of coach Urban Meyer is. First time he’s faced adversity.

Meyer couldn’t beat a SINGLE top 10 ranked team since 2008, even with Charlie Strong and 22 starters returning last year.

2010 will be a good test for Meyer, with HIS player,s not Zook’s. Meyer has never stayed in a place long enough to win with his own recruits. Never won a National Championship with his own recruits.

Meyer has the #1 recruiting class–it’s Meyer’s own recruits. He couldn’t beat a top 10 ranked team OR win the Natl Champ in 2009 with his own recruits (1st time in 24 years he had to play with his own recruits).

2010 will tell the world EVERYTHING it needs to know about Urban Meyer.

Situations are differant ,I realize this.

Kind of funny though that we make immediate hire, take care of business QUICKLY not to disrupt CPJand the direction in which our program is headed.

Is it getting that bad that Georgia has to take coaches from UConn and Vandy? Way to shoot for the stars with those hires mutts.

Too bad GT didn’t have the intelligence to hire a UConn caoch. Randy Edsel would be a much better long term solution than Paul Johnson. TE- Charles & White both average over 15 yards a catch
WR- Green- 16 yards a catch, Wooten and T. King- 20 yards a catch
RB- C. King 5.2 ypc, Ealey 5.8 yards per carry
Wildcat- Branden Smith averages 12 yards a carry
O-Line- returns all5 starters, with depth at every position
QB- Murray & Mason Parade All-Americans, Zach & Gray top 10 ranked QB’s
Kick returns- Boykin and Smith both proven barn burners

Congratulations to the Dawgs lead by Coach Richt for their latest hire, Coach Belin. It’s so easy to caught up in the nonsense of writers and their target audiences of dolts, who together create the nonsense and trouble needed to create interest and circulation. You can’t always compare your program to others based on the occasional blip in wins/losses. How many Kiffinesque (and the obvious others)programs would have targeted a coach at Vandy and been willing to wait until AFTER Vandy’s recruiting was solidified to hire away that important cog in Vandy’s process. This is a telling and only small sample of the integrity and honor Coach Richt and his staff brings to UGA. All is well at our school and consistency is generally a good thing when managed by the right person. I would not trade the leadership at our program for any of the Kiffin, Saban, Carrol, Petrinos etc of the world. We will have a solid to really good year this year, be back playing in a New Years Day type bowl and all will be good. As a fan, be proud of our players and coaches ( and future recruits ). Seriously, you people crack me up. If you think hiring a guy from a school that normally has a horrible record is any indiacation oh where the program is then you need to look no further than Tennessee. They swung and missed on Cutcliffe who didn’t want to leave Duke, thats right the whipping boy of the ACC. Strike two, swung and missed on Troy Calhoun from Air Force a usual 7 or 8 win team each year. And had to settle on a coach who hasn’t been in the running for any high profile jobs and had a loosing record in the WAC where there is one good team (Boise State). Hiring a LB’s coach who consistantly has his players in position, has them knowing their assignments and gets the max effort out of them is bad. Tells everyone how un-knowledeable you are about football.

Leave Vandy Alone

I just think its funny that a Clemson fan would even try to criticize the Georgia program. wow. How many BCS bowls have you been to lately? How many 10 win seasons do you have as of late? Oh and keep making fun of Shreveport Tech fans because I saw you playing on that blue field a couple years ago, and I saw you lose your first BCS bowl in 50 years, and I saw you get blown out by LSU. So, until you can win get to a bowl game and actually win then you should probably keep quiet because the team we blew out in Shreveport almost beat the Longhorns who almost beat Bama.

Clemson has established a very respectible program for many years now. Maybe not in big bwin seasons, but at least we finally got rid of Tommy Bowden.Danny had run his course, put us on the national nmap. However, he got too big for his britches. What cost him his job was he wanted to run everything and the powers in charge held their ground. Today he runs his farm just outside of the Clemson city limits.

Moving players around

February 6th, 2010

I like the fact that UGA HAS athletes that can be moved around to better the overall effort. Samuels moving to line backer is a great example. If he can put on say 15 or 18 pounds and retain his speed, he can really be a force. With great coaching and for sure we have that now with the new D coaches, he will do well. This is like getting a top notch, and FAST JC kid and installing him into the D.

Imagine Tech taking their new itty bitty incoming frosh running back all 5′5″ and 155 pounds and moving him to linebacker in two years. Sort of a drop off there. HAHAHAHAHA

Go Dogs!!!

Alt, Richt has hired Lilly, RC at FSU, and now Vandy’s RC. CWM was a very good recruiter so Richt needed to make a move to replace him. With these guys and Garner I look for the 2011 class to be much improved. I really kind of like this years class because of all those big ‘ol linemen. I believe that winning teams are built from the inside out.

I think Belin is going to coach mainly outside linebackers and special teams. In regards to recruiting I think he will help out but mainly more of intoducing himself as a special teams/outside backers coach. Grantham is running the show and that is what I like best. Willie seemed to let his defensive coaches do whatever and not follow a particular agenda.

Belin’s a good hire. Using recruiting as the benchmark Vandy has over achieved defensively for years. Winning is a combination of coaching and talent. The loss of BVG began to show in the first year and was more and more telling as time went on. The first half of CMRs time at Georgia and the second half have both been heavily influenced by the play of Georgia’s defense. The head coach can’t do everything. He has to have the right staff around him. It would appear CMR is getting that staff in place. We shall see but the prognosis on these guys seems to be really good.

I think Coach Richt has finally asked himself, do I want Friends as Coaches or a winning football team. It’s ok to be friends with your staff but only if they are doing their job and the past staff were not doing their jobs. I’m glad he realized that and took action which I’m sure hurt since they were his Buds.

February 6th, 2010

A return to smash-mouth football and the Junkyard Dawgs!!! Defense wins championships and this defensive coaching staff will get us where we want to be regarding limiting ppg to 15 or so average. The only missing piece of the puzzle is when Richt realizes that he needs to get a qualified OC; Bobo is waaaaaay too predictable and all of the SEC and ACC teams’ coaches know it. It’s not against NCAA regulations to adjust your offense when it doesn’t produce or keep doing what is productive until the opposing defense figures it out!

10 a year with Willie, 12-13 a year with Grantham

February 6th, 2010
5:10 pm

Richt has averaged 10 wins a year in his 1st 9 seasons with a sub-par set of defensive coaches. 90 wins in 9 seasons.

the new defensive staff should be good for 2-3 more wins per year, so we’re looking at 12-13 wins per year, instead of 10.

Exactly, AthDog.

Here we are coming off 3 of the last 4 seasons now which most of us Bulldog fans feel have been huge disappointments to our players and to us, and our fan blog writer Bill King wants to talk about whom it is we can put a statue up for.

2006 was certainly no fun with losses to Vanderbilt, Florida again, Tennessee again, and Kentucky again. If you are not hugely disappointed by that, there is nothing that you are embarrassed by in life. We lost 3 games against the 5 SEC East opponents. 2-3 Record in our own Division of our own Conference. We certainly are not on any national stage with a performance like that.

2008 was certainly no fun giving up 30, 42, & 29 consecutive points in losses to Georgia tek, Alabama again, and Florida again. You just might recall we started that season ranked Number 1 in the Polls. Then, stunk up the stadium offensively and defensively and on special teams allowing opponents to rack up 30, 42 and 29 consecutive points. We became the laughing stock of college football not because we lost to 2 SEC teams that everyone but us knew were better coached teams than our own, but because of the manner in which we just gave up allowing more than 4 consecutive touchdowns against both, and then to top off our first Number 1 Ranking ever in the Polls to begin a season, in the last regular season game, we went out yet again against a team no one had ranked a single time all year long at our own house ‘Tween the Hedges and let lowly unranked Georgia tek score 29 consecutive points against us and we lost to Georgia tek at Sanford Stadium. I see no statues for this season, either. Without the win over UGA, Georgia tek certainly gets ranked by no one in the Final Polls and probably should not have been anyway.

2009 was even worse. Sure, we lost to Florida again, lost to LSU again, lost to Okie State who even Houston beat but not us, lost to Tennessee again, and lost to Kentucky again. But, just how in the name of God can we look and see that Tennessee and Kentucky both went 7-6 on the season and that both have a losing record on the season were it not for their wins over us, and not view ourselves in Decline as we most assuredly are.

2010 frankly on the Offensive Side of the Ball, has started out again hugely disappointing to all Bulldog fans and players, and believe it or not but even Coach Richt said he was hugely disappointed in our recruiting failings on offense this past Wednesday. Coach Richt blamed his disappointment on us fans saying that the reason we recruited only 2 injured offensive players is that we had to replace his defensive coaching staff. If we remain true to form 2010 and there is no one who feels we will not with yet another season of not having prepared a QB with only 3 freshmen QB (Just how does a team do that to itself?), and all the fumbles, all the interceptions and all the penalties this football program produces nowadays, this has certainly at least started out hugely disappointing to all amongst us but the DISNEYdawg.

This could be 4 of the last 5 years viewed by the nation as hugely disappointing to Georgia Bulldogs in football.

And, the 1 year that was not of the last 5 ?

2007 when we started the season with not just Conference losses, but Division losses to knock us out of any hope of making it to the SEC Championship. On Offense, we put up 12 against South Carolina and followed that up with putting up only 14 against Tennessee. South Carolina, you may recall did not even play in a bowl game. 6 losses South Carolina had in 2006, just like Tennessee and Kentucky 6 losses this season just ended – that’s how bad South Carolina was 2007. Loss to South Carolina and for good measure a total blow-out by Tennessee again 35-14.

We are in Decline folks, with a stubborn head coach who bragged this time last year that he would not be replacing Willie Martinez nor Mike Bobo. Or anyone else for that matter on his coaching staff of ninnies.

We have issues on offense and clearly not being able to evaluate talent is right up there at the top of the list.

Now, as a result, the recruits themselves do not want to play on this Mike Bobo no fun offense because they see the way we have squandered our offensive talent, played favorites, and looked absolutely miserable.

We have a losing record All-Time to Tennessee, losing record All-Time to Alabama, losing record All-Time to Auburn, losing record All-Time to LSU, losing record All-Time to Nebraska, losing record All-Time to Penn State, losing record All-time to Pittsburgh, losing record All-Time to Southern California, losing record All-Time to Texas, losing record All-Time to Texas A&M, and a losing record All-Time to Wake Forest, losing record All-Time to Arizona, losing record All-Time to West Virginia, and I do believe with 17 losses the last 20 years to Florida that we are just not the football program the fans of this program would like to come in here and paint us as.

Statues ? The only stinking statues that need to be put up around here are for the fans who try to put some spin on all this the last 5 years, since DJ Shockley graduated with Honors, and find that UGA has been better than Florida to name but one.

I’d like to do something about it. There are others who feel that they instead are way more than just satisfied. Let’s erect a statue to them, the DISNEYdawg fans.

If I made a list of the most overrated players in the SEC over the past 10 years ole Percy would be near the top. A good player? Of course, but he was never the game changer he was always made out to be. Urban Meyer drew up some good plays to take advantage of his open field abilities, but most of the time he was a non-factor. What UGA Needs in 2010 on Offense

February 7th, 2010
2:08 pm

Bobo will HAVE to figure out a way to get 225 rushing per game, or he will be fired.

We need 225 rushing yards a game
We need 225 passing yards a game
We need 450 total yards per game of offense to be the best in the SEC
We need 31 points a game on offense

That works out to 40 runs per game at 5.6 yards per carry, and 20 passes per game at 11 yards per pass.

Branden Smith is averaging 12 yards per carry. Ealey 5.8, King 5.2.

I’d get:
Ealey 22 carries- 132 yards per game
King 12 carries- 60 yards per game
Branden Smith 6 carries- 70 yards a game
WR’s Green/Wooten/King 10 catches- 175 yards a game
TE’s White/Charles- 10 catches- 150 yards a game

Note:
All numbers are based on 2009 aevrages per catch or carry per player.

What UGA Needs in 2010 on Offense

February 7th, 2010
2:27 pm

All Based on what Florida & Bama did in 2009:

We need about 40 running plays, and about 25 passing plays.
We need to get 225 rushing, 210 passing.
We need to complete 60% of our passes.
We need to average 5.6 per carry x 40 carries.
We need to average 14 yards a catch for the 15 caught passes per game(25 passes, only 15 will be caught, 60% completion rate)
We need to keep Giveaways to 1 per game
To get the 225 rushing we can get 50 yards from the QB (Murray or Gray both run great), 50 yards from Branden Smith, then 125 from Ealey/King
To get 225 passing yards, we can get 150 from 10 caught passes to WR’s, and 75 from 5 caught passes form our TE’s

What UGA Needs in 2010 on Offense- I like your thinking. Real simple….RUN the dang ball!

What UGA Needs in 2010 on Offense

February 7th, 2010
2:56 pm

1- Right on, we average over 200 yards a game passing already. florida 7 Bama are at about 210, so that’s fine. But we only average about 150 yards a game rushing, where Florida and Bama are at 220 a game, so we’re 70 yards a game short there. We can get 70 more yards by either:
a) letting Ealey get more carries since he has a higher ypc average
b) using Branden Smith more since he’s getting 12 ypc
c) letting a more mobile QB (like Murray or Gray) pick up some yards a game.
d) call more running plays
e) more depth at O-Line this year if injuries hit

2- We GIVEAWAY the ball 2x more in turnovers on offense than Florida & Bama. We can fix that by calling more running plays and more low risk passing plays. Also, limit touches of players with ball protection issues.

Should UGA RUN 2 TE Sets?

February 7th, 2010
3:10 pm

This is the best bunch of TE’s Georgia has had in a long time. We are also a little thin at WR to be running 2 WR sets. It might make sense this year to run a lot of 2 TE sets.

Defenses wouldn’t know if we were running or passing. If they come up to stop the run, you have 2 TE’s open. If the defense stays back, you audible to run with a TE there to block.

TE’s also create big-time match-up problems, as most will be on smaller, slower lb’s.

Ealey & King Best RB Combo

“Our two RB’s have to be the best 1-2 punch in college football.

Ealey and King are both averaging over 5 yards a carry as a pair, over 200 yards a game in the last 5 games.”

Why do you make things up—yes they average 5= yards/carry, but I’ve got news for you,
the Gators have 3 running backs averaging more yards/carry.

Jeff Demps 99/745 yds, avg 7.5yds/ carry, & 7 TDs, Chris Rainey 89/575 yds, avg 6.5 yds/carry & 5 TDs, Emmanuel Moody 58/378 yds, avg 6.5 yds/carry, 3 TDs.

Your guys: Ealey 125/717, 5.7 yds/carry, 3 TDs., King 114/594, 5.2yds/carry, 7 Tds, Samuel 58/378, 4.5 yds/carry, 2TDs.

Also, there are many schools that have better running backs than either one of us, so get off your high horse and quit making things up. Oh’ I forgot about that Smith boy, if you think 13 carries have any relevance, then go for it fool.

Should UGA RUN 2 TE Sets?

I give you this Charles is good, the Gators wanted him, but let me show you how he rates
nationally. He was listed has a WR in Rivals.com and he plays the slot sometimes, but all his catches don’t amount to a hill of beans.

Last year he was rated # 300 in receptions nationally with just 374 yards, Aron White is only ranked #558 nationally with 198 yards. Let me show you the #1 nationally rated TE, the Gators Aaron Hernandez (#52 overall nationally, which includes WR’s) with
68 receptions for 850 yards, which is more than all your TE’s put together. So before you lay claim to the biggest and the best, get your facts straight.

That was high school for Murry, I not sure he has ever thrown a pass in college.
Brantley is a forth year junior and has twice the experience of Murry of Mettz.
Just this past year Brantley was 36/48, a 75% completion avg for 410 yards, 7 TDs and NO INTERCEPTIONS.
Frankly, I think Murry or Mettz will be in their high chair(no pun intended) this fall, with Bobo spoon feeding them short passes in the flat, kind of like where Cox left off.

Ealey King & Smith Best Trio in SEC East

I see you are still drinking that kool aid and think Smith’s 13 carries are all world and have some relevance. You even are wrong about the Gators top 3 RB’s, Moody is the third, not Gillislee. Funny you should mention Gillislee, he was hurt most of the year and should be great next fall, I would expect him to out rush both your best two. By the way, you do know Florida will run mostly out of the I-formation.

So lets recount. First Coach Richt fires a D staff we ALL know was over their heads in the SEC. he Hires a true D cordinator, a DB coach who knows what the Db’s should do AND he got another recruiter to help coach Garner, that everyone would love to have, Plus the new guy knows special teams. Yet all you techies want to somehow say your retired D coordinator is the stuff. ( chan the man anyone). Coach Richt has put together a solid D staff. And as much as the AJC and the techies would love it. Coach Richt isnt going anywhere. So talk up your over the hill washed up D coordinator bugs. Our D staff is here to stay.

Spoonfeed Baby QB Brantley

February 7th, 2010
8:00 pm

Meyer (or Addazio if Meyer quits again) will need to spoonfeed their little inexperienced baby QB Brantley with some baby food and milk and cookies.

We all know Brantley isn’t HALF the QB that Murray is. Brantely had the opportunity in High School to score 62 td’s and 5000 yards in 1 season and couldn’t get close.

UGA's 3 Star QB is Better Than Brantley

February 7th, 2010
8:04 pm

Hutson Mason is our 3 star QB. He CRUSHES Brantley.

Mason 4500 yards passing, 55 td’s
Brantley 2800 yards passing, 41 td’s

This doesn’t even factor in Murray, who of course, NO QB in the NATION can compete with stat-wise (5000 yards of offense, 62 td’s, 2 state championships).

Good hire! And that shows some class not announcing the hire of Vandy’s recruiting coordinator until after signing day.

There’s no way Belin’s intended to replace Garner. 1) You can’t have too many coaches who know how to recruit, and 2) Garner is a heckuva DL coach (judging by the talent he’s put in the NFL). We’ve been missing that kind of player development at LB. Grantham and Belin will correct it. Richt made the painful changes he needed to, and the future looks good.

Congrats to Richt and Dog Nation for the Belin hire. Vandy has had solid LB play despite a shallow recruiting pool. I especially like Belins Special teams and Recruiting coordination experience.

I find it amusing that Jackets, Vols, and Gators fans have such little ATL media coverage of their own teams that they are reduced to heckling the UGA program. Gators ought to spend a little more time worrying about resurgence in the Hurricane and Seminole programs. You guys have had little competition from them at home lately for recruits and fans. That is changing. As the Hurricane and Seminole programs rise, the Gator program will suffer. You Jackets have little to aspire to for your program other than trying to measure up to the big dawg.

Georgia is getting a fantastic coach and recruiter in Warren Belin. Vandy has had outstanding linebackers under Belin. Coach Belin became recruiting coordinator two years ago and since then, Vandy has had excellent recruiting classes. I see the astute Bama and Vol fans trashing GA for hiring a Vandy coach. Vandy rarely gets 3 star players, yet competes with teams loaded with 4 and 5 star talent. Belin may have been the best of the corps of coaches at Vandy that enabled those 2 star players to be so competitive. We’ll miss Belin, but wish him the best of luck with Georgia.

I like this guy, Belin! Linebacker play will reach a new and excellent level! I think Mark Richt worked his butt off on replacing those three incompetent coaches he had to fire and got 3 great assistant coaches. I look to see a drastically improved defense. Those 12 new defensive recruits will surely reap the benefits of being Dawgs in the new and improved Junkyard Dawg Defense!

Some of you should do a little research and see what Vandy’s defense did last year. While they were 2-10, look at how stingy they were on defense. And doing this with an offense that averaged a mere 8.9 points a game in SEC play.
