Evans on Signing Day, DC salary, remaining coaching hire, etc.

Athens – At each meeting of the UGA Athletic Association’s board of directors, Damon Evans briefs the board on recent developments in the department. Here’s what Evans, the athletics director, told the board about a range of topics at this week’s meeting:

– On Signing Day: “You never know how the kids will turn out. They could have all the  stars in the world, but you never know until they get here. . . . At the end of the day, in my humble opinion, you can rate them, but it depends on what they do when they get here. So we’ll wait and see what happens.”

– On hiring a defensive coordinator: “Mark [Richt] went through a very extensive process of trying to find a defensive coordinator. Went a roundabout way but found a guy we feel very confident in from the Dallas Cowboys, Todd Grantham. . . . There seems to be a lot of excitement growing around Todd and his new defensive scheme.”

— On Grantham’s $750,000 salary: “I know you saw the reports of the salary we paid -– at the 750 mark with him. Times are a changing in the sport of football. I think at one point in time you saw the escalating salaries for head coaches. Now I see that starting to happen with the assistant coaches. We’ll still try to do what’s appropriate and be mindful of what’s going on. But that’s what at the time we felt we needed to do to get the person to come in and fill that position.”

–  On the ripple effects of the defensive-coordinator search: “And yes, a lot of people did get raises around the country, I’m going to go ahead and say that.”

— On the remaining opening on the football coaching staff: “We still have one position to fill, which Frank [executive associate athletics director Frank Crumley] is working with Mark on right now. So hopefully that position will be filled here soon and we can move forward on into spring ball.”

— On the state of the men’s basketball program: “I’m excited about what’s going on with the basketball program. . . . By no means are we where we want to be, but the thing is, you see the student-athletes are having fun and they seem to be responding to Mark Fox and his staff. We’ve had some significant wins, mainly beating Georgia Tech here. For those of you who were able to attend that game, it’s always good to beat Tech. And we had a good top-10 win over Tennessee.”

— On what’s ahead: “I’m excited about the upcoming sports seasons because we continue to have an opportunity to win some national championships.”

Hey Ray Goof. Why don’t you go build another Zaxby’s. Leave the college football talk to those who actually know college football. Patrick just laid out a bunch of facts that cannot be refuted. If you don’t like the facts then go and live in some fantasy world where Georgia football is not relevant. But if you are going to live in the real world, then get used to the successful football program in Athens. Oh yeah, go tell your boy Joe Hamilton I said hey.

Hey Tech fans, it still hurts doesn’t it? 30-24. If it didn’t hurt, then you wouldn’t be wasting your time on a UGA blog. You guys are pretty pathetic. Why don’t you guys go find a girl to hang out with. Oh, that’s right, there are no girls that go to GT. Why don’t you leave your dorm room and go do something? Oh, that’s right, you might get mugged or robbed. Pretty sad existence in my opinon.

To the person who said Richt won two SEC Championships with Donnan’s players. Say the samething to Saban, he won a SEC and National Title with Shula’s players.

The incident at Tech was blown out of proportion. Actually It was two gays at a Sushi Bar and one stabbed the other with a sword fish in a dispute over who ate all the wasabi. A person of interest is an individual named “Louie”. Anyway, it happens all the time around North Avenue. No big deal!

One more point about Da’Rick. You hear a lot of whispers about what really went into his defection and off-field concerns about him, but in the wake of his putting on the orange cap, all that sounds like the same sort of sour grapes that emanated from the other side last year when Marlon Brown pulled a similar 180 and signed with the Dogs. Let’s not stoop to that level. The kid had a change of heart. Leave it at that.

Dude,
Marlon didn’t do a 180. He did not commit to UT and then calll the coaching staff the day before signing day. That is the major difference here. Darick told UGA he was solid until the night before. Get your facts straight. He did it on purpose. He is a vile and I hope he gets his SUV taken away from him. Remember Boycott Nance Carpet & Rug in Calhoun GA. Lets leave it at that.

Umm Richt won a SEC title in 2005. He came to UGA in 2001. So when he won the SEC title in 2005 he used all 4th and 5th year seniors?

Yellow Fuzz I went to UGA because Coach O came into my Grandmama’s house and dropped a bunch of F bombs on her. Once I made that choice I stuck with it.

At least GT doesn’t have to worry about being humiliated in another BCS bowl anytime soon. They’re no better than #3 in the Coastal in 2010.

Damon Evans has not been good at all for Coach Richt.

What other AD owuld schedule 2 NON-CONFERENCE TOP 10 TEAMS?

Florida is scheduling teams like Florida International and Charleston Souther, and Evans has Richt out there playing top 10 NON-CONFERENCE opponents?

Sometimes you have to wonder about Evans when it comes to scheduling.
