Athens –- The board of directors of the University of Georgia Athletic Association this afternoon voted to spend $21.3 million on projects that will change the face of Stegeman Coliseum and add a large plaza behind the north stands of Sanford Stadium.
Stegeman will get an expanded and renovated concourse and a new glass façade. The coliseum’s outer walls will be moved out as far as the roof overhangs the current structure, creating space for more restrooms and concessions stands.
The plaza on the north side of Sanford Stadium will renovate the “Reed Alley” area of campus. The idea is to make the area part of the stadium on game days and leave it open as a university amenity on other days.
University architects told the board that the Reed Alley/Sanford Stadium project can be completed by the start of the 2010 football season and the Stegeman project by the start of the 2010-11 basketball and gymnastics seasons.
The board meeting is still in progress. More details to come.

I like the idea of always improving the “meal ticket” at UGA in Georgia football. I also like that we are starting to take the basketball program seriously by sprucing up Stegeman. Still need to do something to improve the baseball stadium so that we can keep Coach Perno around for a long time. Go Dawgs!!!

There’s no reason why we can’t compete in multiple big ticket sports…we have resources available and success in one sport can provide overall benefit to others in university prestige.

The scoreboard was just renovated a couple of years ago. It’s one of the nicest in the SEC. Obviously you’ve never been to a game retard.

Lloyd Christmas, obviously YOU haven’t seen the boards at other stadia throughout SEC and country. Perhaps you should get out more. The scoreboard and replay screen are awful and an embarrassment.

Sure wish they would consider making all the Sanford seats chairback like the pro stadiums. I would be willing to pay a little extra for that. Club level seats are out of reach in cost and the permanent seat backs for the bleacher seats are not thah comfortable.

They will never update to chairbacks for one simple reason: capacity.
Also, I have NO idea which scoreboard you’re talking about.

Well, where do I start.
They need to spend some money on samford stadium.
Last time I was there (Nov. 2008 vs. AWESOME GT ) the rats were roaming around the concession stands. (Real sanitary,I must say.)
Students were puking in the restrooms in the second qtr.
The hedges were ripped up after the game.
Hope this year they shape up the place.

UGA’s scoreboard compared to other SEC schools, is only larger than South Carolina’s and Vanderbilt’s… Go check out Florida’s, LSU’s, MISSISSIPPI STATE (Yea, thats right) and Alabama’s future plans. And yes, Sanford Stadium has had a few “facelifts”, but when is the interior of the stadium going to get some attention?
I’ve seen some drawings of the plans for the Steg… and it will never be the same. In a good way.

Waste on our gym when what we need is a new gym not designed to be a cow palace on the Agricultural Campus, and what we need is an indoor practice facility along with an 11-year NFL veteran to be Offensive Coordinator at $750,000 a year. Ask the recruits.

I agree with Messenger. We need a NEW Stegman not a refurbished one! Don’t waste the money and decide in a year or two when Fox has us beating everyone that we then need to build a new one.
