The ripple effects of Georgia’s long, expensive search for a defensive coordinator continued today when a $390,000-per-year raise was approved for Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.
Smart, a former Georgia player, turned down the Bulldogs’ DC job four days before Todd Grantham was hired.
And today it became known how much it cost Alabama to keep Smart.
The compensation committee of the board of trustees of the University of Alabama System approved a new contract that will pay Smart a base salary of $750,000 per year -– more than double the $360,000 base salary he made last season. (Click here or here or here for more details from Alabama newspapers on the committee’s action.)
Smart is one of three defensive coordinators to get hefty raises after declining Georgia’s overtures. Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster had an annuity added to his existing contract that will pay him an $800,000 lump sum if he remains with the Hokies for another five years. And LSU’s John Chavis received a $250,000-per-year raise to $700,000 per year.
Not coincidentally, Smart’s new $750,000 salary is the same amount that Georgia offered him -– and the same amount that Georgia is paying Grantham.
So Smart and Grantham — at least for the moment — share the distinction of being the third highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football, behind only USC’s Monte Kiffin ($1.2 million base salary plus $300,000 bonus last year at Tennessee) and Will Muschamp ($900,000 at Texas). Smart can surpass Grantham on the pay scale on March 1, when Smart will receive a $34,400 bonus if he’s still at Alabama. Grantham’s contract also includes a series of potential bonuses, but none are payable until after the 2010 season.

From a purely objective, career oriented standpoint, you can’t blame him at all for staying put. Why rock the boat when you’re going to be making the same money and are already on a major HC job fast track anyway? Good luck to him.

Well, you could look at all this positively. Instead of hiring Grantham right off the bat, we tried to sucker the top def. coordinators in the country to come coach here. Forcing them to get hefty raises, and taking money away from those colleges to be used later.

I feel that Kirby made the right decision and don’t blame him at all. I personally would have stayed at Bama also. At bama he is in a win/ win scenario, risks nothing, and is lined up to land the next great HC job available. If he came to UGA there is no win/win scenario. He can only stay at his current level but potentially stands to loose everything if the program continues to slide.
The truth of the matter is that the UGA program is in a current state of decline. Richts glory days are well behind him and he has become complacent, lazy, and over-tanned. UGA football is a sinking ship and Smart made the right decision.

I think Bama can afford to pay their DC $750,000.00 per year. After all they are the SEC Champions, have the Heissman winner & are National Champions as well and as a result, millions of $$ came into Alabama’s coffers this season. UGA is paying their DC the same amount of money without the credentials that Kirby Smart has. I wouldn’t credit Richt with being a sly fox on this one.

You’re an idiot. Huge difference between Bama and the rest of college football. Bama was working with a discounted priced coach who just earned his raise, while the rest of college football is looking at the elephants A$$ trying to catch up with them and throwing money around hand over fist in an effort to attain their lofty status.

Only a Gator fan would use Louisville and Mississippi State as threats. That’d be like saying “Watch out for Oklahoma if your ever play them, Willie Martinez once coached at Georgia.” Dan Mullins and Charlie Strong both deserved a shot to coach, but let’s wait until they’ve won more than a handful of games collectively before we use them to scare Coach Richt.

Something not too many people have thought about, but is very likely to happen. Georgia will only play 2 games where they won’t be favorites:
Florida & Auburn. Grantham will make sure Georgia’s defense is solid, our offense brings back 10 out of 11 starters, and our special teams–best punter/kicker combo in football.
If Georgia goes undefeated in 2010, Saban & Meyer would both leave in 2010.

Let’s see CMR has to raise the stakes for a DC. He offered Smart, who turned him down to stay at Bama and got a raise. It seems to me that CMR has to pay $750,000 to get someone so what’s the difference in Smart getting more money and Ga having to pay it. At least Smart earned his and it was due. Can’t say that yet about Ga Dc. Also you dawg fans how many national titles have you one? Even if I say 8 for us ( really 13) it’s more than you will ever have, unless it’s gymnastics.

The salary issue is really out of hand. No head coach is worth the money that is being paid these days. That being said, the DC salary being paid to Grantham, Smart, & Muschamp etc. is in line with what their head coach makes. They put in the long hours and are on the road recruiting too. Somehow, someway there will be a correction to this madness. I hope I’m around to see it!

Bremen, there was no reason for Smart to move. What for the same money and HC that is slow to make changes? Saban was not happy about his offense and made changes. Smart knew he would have the entire weight of the team on his shoulders with a team that could put up a running game except against Vandy, GT, and Tx A&M. QBs the past 4 years have tossed 10 or more INTs. Smart has a paycheck as long as Saban is in coaching and a door to getting his own HC job.

If he is that bad of a coach, why do you want to stir up the UGA fans against him on a blog? TrueDawg they will not provide a logical response because it does not exist. CMR has been so bad he is only #4 in winning percentage over the last 9 years in the Nation. Last year was a down year, lets wait and see how the changes take place before you bury the Dogs.
BTW, for all the ignorant posters, it is a FACT that when Nick Saban took the Dolphins job he offered the DC position to Todd Grantham who turned it down. Kirby Smart was a Defensive Backs or Running Backs coach so at that time Nick Saban though more highly of Todd Grantham than he did Kirby Smart. KS would have been a great choice to come back to UGA mainly because of recruiting, but from a Coaching/teaching point UGA probably ended up with a better choice.

All’s well that ends well. I’m very happy with Grantham. He is more experienced and I’m looking forward to seeing him work this fall. The only shortcoming may be that KS is a better recruiter.
Btw, I wish CMR would have called and offered me a job. I could use a huge pay raise.

After winning another national champion, 24 straight regular season games and with the cupboard stocked for years, we light cigars with $20 bills and the pay raise for Kirby Smart is but a drop in an immense bucket. Good to see you rednecks worked up over it. I’d hate to have a Bama guy turn us down to stay somewhere else. That would suck.

I notice the article doesn’t mention the fact that Kirby just won the Broyles Award as the best assistant coach in the country. I think his pay raise is justified. Since he took over as DC, Bama has had back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, an SEC championship and won the big crystal football. Hard to argue with that.
Kirby didn’t take the Georgia DC job because he wants his next move to be as a HC. He’s not disloyal, it just wasn’t the job he wanted.
Come on Dawgs, get over it!

So, Smart is overrated because he aligns to strategy? A strategy which has allowed him to be a part of two Nationsl Titles. What does that make Richt? Richt won a National Title at FSU when he aligned to Bowden’s strategy. But he hasn’t participated in a National title game as a head coach.

UA Alum92, I for one concur, however he could have been up front about it if he had no desire to return to Athens. It wasn’t the fact he didn’t come that rankled some fans, it was the way he strung Ga along for weeks on end that made it appear he was using the courtship to get a (much deserved) raise and then very publicly announced that he was staying. I too think he will be someones head coach very very soon. Congrats on the NC

Thanks, Kam Fong. Did he string Georgia along? I believe he said he wasn’t talking to anyone until after the NC. During that time, I believe CMR was talking to Foster, Koening, others so you can’t really say Kirby was the reason the search lasted so long.
In the end though, I think it all worked out for the best. Grantham is a very good coach and I think he’ll be successful with your boys. They should at the very least play with a lot more discipline. Good luck!

Kirby ain’t smart. Lets see. Alabama/Saban low balled him to the tune of $350,000/year as long as they could. Georgia/Richt tried to do right by him and show him how much he was worth by offering him $750,000 up front. So what does he do? He says, OK Saban, you’ve been screwing me but I’ve gotten used to it. Now you’ve kissed me and I’m happy. You, dilbert!

Nick Saban loses a LOT more than Mark Richt.
He has more BAD years, like Meyer than Mark Richt.
Saban went 7-6 with Bama what 2 or 3 years ago.
Richt’s never had a 7-6 year.
Richt deserved the Natl Champ in 2002 & 2007, media bias doesn’t change that.

Nacho to be fair, Saban won his first after coaching for 31 yrs. Richt has been at it about 24 so far. So if in 7 yrs he doesn’t win it (never mind already having 2 teams with good enough records to have done so), then we can say……….

Saban’s Wannabe is now in a dream world. Saban took an LSU program and an Alabama program that did not win a Nat’l Championship for years before his arrival and turned both of them around in record time?
And I love the lame comment. Richt deserved a Nat’l Championhip in 02 & 07? “Deserved”, are you kidding me. You “EARN” and Nat’l Championship. Heck every UGA fan thinks GA should be National Champion every year anyway. Hey, the bright side is you were ranked #1 when the season started in 2008. How that work out?

Richt deserved NC’s in 2002 and 2007? Did either team go undefeated? Georgia didn’t beat Florida either year and didn’t even win the SEC East in 2007. Media bias can’t strap on a helmet.

It’s simply unfair to compare a team like Auburn, with 29 places, to Georgia’s 17.
But, if you look at the Star Power Average, Georgia is ranked #6 at 3.47 average score per recruit.

It’s simply unfair to compare 29 places that Auburn has with Georgia’s 17.
But Scout ranks the QUALITY of the 17 recruits as #6, average score of 3.61
And, the number of top 100 recruits has Georgia at #5, which is remarkable when you consinder that we are only talking about 17 spots.

Dubose: “Kirbster” knew that if he accepted the Georgia job, he would have forfeited any chance of getting the Ala-damn-bama head Coaching position in the future. He would also have hurt his chances of getting the Georgia job if Richt was replaced in the future. (Coordinators are not usually hired to replace the Head Coaches they helped to fail.)
The pendulum is swinging…You might want to wait before betting your sanity on Bama’s return to royalty.

Offensive line recruit Arie Kouandjio set to sign with Alabama
By Gentry Estes, Mobile Press-Register
February 02, 2010, 5:23PM
(Photo courtesy of Rivals.com)On the eve of National Signing Day, Maryland offensive tackle Arie Kouandjio is spreading the word that he has committed to Alabama.
Kouandjio was scheduled to announce tomorrow morning, but told The Washington Post and Sports Illustrated.com that he committed this afternoon and will sign with the Crimson Tide.
“Alabama just felt like a good situation, like the right place to be,” Kouandjio told SI.com. “I liked everything about the school.”
A 6-foot-5, 315-pound tackle from powerhouse high school DeMatha, Kouandjio is rated as a four-star prospect on the five-star scale used by Rivals.com, which also has Kouandjio as the nation’s No. 117 overall recruit. He becomes the 26th expected addition to tomorrow’s 2010 signing class.

This isn’t news. You’re pulling up the rear Tucker.
But here’s something for the AJC to try to ferret out: Is CMR going to give pay raises to the rest of the staff. Namely does BOOBo get a pay raise from his 300K+ when the DC is making nearly 1M? Is CMR going to up his pay to keep this goof on the same pay scale par as the DC? He sure as hell isn’t worth $300K so if he gets a pay hike to $700+ to help keep his little feelies from getting hurt then only a Bug mashed on the windshield after a beat down by the dawgs will stink worse.
