The dreaded mat drills begin (and other notes)

– Today was the most dreaded day of the year for Georgia’s football players: the start of mat drills, the legendary off-season workouts designed to severely test physical and mental endurance.

“We had mat drills this morning at 5:45,” A.J. Green reported via Twitter. “Legs are gonna . . . then I have test today at 9:05 . . . yep the life of a student athlete.”

He later tweeted that the test went well. But as for the exhausting mat drills?  “Can’t wait to get n bed.”

– I’m sure Georgia’s men’s basketball team (1-5 in the SEC) would rather have victories than praise, but after losing by a point at South Carolina on Saturday, the Bulldogs got high praise from Gamecocks coach Darrin Horn on the SEC teleconference today. “They’ve got to be the best one-win team in any conference in the country right now,” Horn said of the Dogs. “They are really hard to play against. . . . They have been in a legitimate position to win almost every one of their games.”

– Horn said Trey Thompkins “is a very difficult matchup one-on-one for anybody in our league.” He called Travis Leslie “an athletic freak . . . a guy that is capable athletically of just about anything and uses it very well.”

– Not sure anybody saw this coming when UGA’s women’s basketball team upset Tennessee 12 days ago. The Lady Dogs (18-1 after beating Tennessee) have lost three games in a row since.

– UGA’s Claude Felton passes along this note:  Only two people have won the National Football Foundation’s Campbell Trophy, which is awarded annually to college football’s top scholar-athlete, and gone on to play on a team that reached the Super Bowl.  They are Peyton Manning and Matt Stinchcomb. Stinchcomb won the Campbell Trophy at Georgia in 1998 and reached the Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders.  Matt’s brother, Jon, is playing in this year’s game for New Orleans against Manning’s Indianapolis Colts.

Funny thing that Yellow Fuzz and the other bug fans forget…. UGA`s worst Team in 10 yrs beat Ga Yech`s best Team in 10 yrs. JaxDawg,
What you and 5000 other dogs on here don’t want to admit is though uga`s worst Team in 10 yrs beat Tech`s best Team in 10 yrs, the year before that (Paul Johnson’s first) Tech beat uga’s best team in over 100 years (preseason number one) 45-42. And they did it in your own back yard, in front of 90,000 silenced dogs and in front of close to 8,000,000 television viewers sending your mangy azzes to the non BCS Citrus Bowl. Mat drills are what have allowed Georgia to get 90 wins in 9 seasons in the SEC and win the 4th quarter 2001-2008.

We LOVE mat drills—-this is the foundation for a National Champion.

You guys crack me up. Yellow Streak, I mean Fuzz, I know y’all won the ACC. Congrats. A powerhouse conference up there with the Big East and the Mountain West. And yes, we did have 20,000 people leaving the stadium during the fourth quarter. I can’t recall a game at Booby Dodd, named for the most overrated coach in the history of college football, by the way, where there were significantly more than 20,000 in the stands for kickoff! But, when the water boils off, and you get to the gist of the argument, it comes down to this: Your team has beaten my team once in the last 9 years. Twice in the last ten. This particular year, we have beaten you in football and also basketball, which, being an ACC school, is supposed to be your forte. Apparently not. Oh, and did I mention my school has more Rhodes, Fulbright, and Truman scholars than your school over the last one, five, and ten years. You can moan, scream, yell, and type all you want. The fact is, and it’s backed up by facts, not hyperbole, unless one wants to be an engineer, your school is second best, at best, in this state. Your athletic department is second best, at best, in this state. Your fans? Don’t know, there aren’t enough of them to qualify. HBTD

The USA Today Coaches’ Poll is a damn joke, and always has been. There is only 1 poll a year – the one before the final Coaches’ Poll – that is made public. So, what do we know about the Coaches’ Poll ?

Steve Spurrier ranks Duke in the Top 25 because he used to coach there.

Mike Leach now fired from Texas Tech ranked Texas Tech Number 2 not this season that just ended with his firing, but the year before. You might recall that Florida Won The SEC Championship Game and that Oklahoma won the Big XII championship game. Texas Tech was Number 12 in the Final AP Poll. But, Mike Leach is allowed to vote Texas Tech Number 2 in the nation. The Coaches’ Poll has no credibility and never has had.

5 of the Big XII coaches ranked both Oklahoma and Texas # 1 and # 2 and had Florida # 3 in 2008. The way I remember it, Florida and Oklahoma were the overwhelming choices to play each other for the National Championship, but not according to 5 Big XII coaches, who did not consider Florida as a participant in the NC Game. The Big XII coaches do this every year.

In this same poll 2008, Jim Tressel who has NEVER beat an SEC Team in a Bowl Game, in fact Ohio State has NEVER beat an SEC Team in a Bowl Game EVER, voted Florida out of the National Championship Game at Number 3. It is a Mockery of a poll and always has been. Always will be.

Coaches don’t sit there flipping channels on Saturdays. They do not have time to follow the game of college football when they have to prepare for the next week’s opponents. And, they have a decided interest in getting their 2 and 3 million a year salary. They have a decided bias for their own conference because why should they coach in that conference if they really feel that some other conference is actually better.

Steve Spurrier in this same poll, was the only SEC coach to have Oklahoma Number 1 and Florida Number 2. Do you just possibly suppose that Steve Spurrier still holds grudges against Florida ? Duh. Every coach in America knows that Florida is a lot better football team than Oklahoma. So, you try explaining to me how in the name of God, Steve Spurrier justifies ranking Oklahoma ahead of Florida ?

UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel ranked Oklahoma Number 4, and had Southern California of the PAC-10 ahead of Oklahoma and in the National Championship Game. He has to. He is a PAC-10 coach and everyone knows what would happen in the game against Southern California if UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel were to vote Oklahoma into the NC Game and leave out Southern California as they were left out in 2003 when LSU was the BCS NC, but the coaches are not given a choice of whom to vote for # 1, because they HAVE TO VOTE for LSU NC in 2003, not Southern California.

Mack Brown of Texas ranked his team into the NC Game and Oklahoma who had won the Big XII Championship game the day before, out. What Mack Brown can face his team after the poll is made public with Mack Brown saying that his team is NOT AS GOOD AS OKLAHOMA ? What kind of B.S. poll is this you want to discuss in here ?

The year before that, Bob Stoops of Oklahoma ranked 3 Big XII teams in the Top 4 teams in America. Now, I ask you, who in the name of Heaven is the worst Conference in the BCS National Championship Game with now 5 LOSSES in the BCS NC Game ? That would be the Big XII, but Bob Stoops the worst offender of them all, has for his top 4 teams in the nation, 3 Big XII teams. Big XII vs Big XII in the NC Game. That’s 1 way the Big XII won’t lose again, right ?

Hal Mumme ranked Hawaii Number 1 team in the Nation to play in the BCS NC Game. Instead, Hawaii was in fact Number 19 in the Final AP Poll 2007.

Howard Schnellenberger in 2007 voted Missouri AHEAD of Oklahoma who won the Big XII Championship Game beating Missouri and oh by the way, Oklahoma beat Missouri during the regular season too. But, Howard Schnellenberger voted Missouri AHEAD of Oklahoma in the NC Game vote by the coaches. You might recall that the AP Poll has REMOVED itself from the BCS NC Game determining polls and that the Coaches’ Poll COUNTS ONE-THIRD OF THE FINAL TOTAL OF WHO IS DETERMINED TO PLAY IN THE BCS NC GAME.

And, Howard Schnellenberger has a team who LOST not ONCE but TWICE in that year AHEAD of the team that beat the crap out of the team he ranked BETTER.

Why play the damn games ?

Just let the coaches vote for whomever they want and then run in here and tell me how great a football program UGA is based upon what you find in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

“My sports information director does the voting, so it doesn’t matter if I haven’t seen them and don’t know much about them” quote from Coach Richt but there have been other coaches who have also admitted that they did NOT even do the vote turned in.

Washington Coach Tyrone Willingham voted Missouri Number 11 the year before last 2008. You just might recall that Missouri was 5-4 in the Big XII that year. Missouri lost by 41 points to Oklahoma, lost by 25 points to Texas, and also lost to Oklahoma State and Kansas; and, Tyrone Willingham votes that Missouri 5-4 Big XII team the Number 11 team in the entire nation. How FOS is that Tyrone Willingham ?

Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel in turn voted Utah Number 15 the year before last, 2008. Utah, you might recall ended the season ranked Number 2 in the Final AP Poll and Pinkel votes Utah Number 15. This is the same season, 2008, that UGA was Number 1 in the Polls to begin the season and then gave up 31 consecutive points to Alabama in a blow-out, then gave up 42 consecutive points to Florida in another blow-out, and then to top-off the season properly, gave up 29 consecutive points to lowly Georgia tek in yet another loss. This is the Number 1 team in the nation. Had UGA not started the season Number 1 and instead started Number 13 where we ended up, UGA would NOT have been ranked at all in 2008. We sucked.

2008 is not the only year UGA has SUCKED beyond all measure in the Coach Richt Era.

2001 UGA lost to South Carolina, Florida, Boston College and Auburn. We sucked.

2003 we lost to Florida like always and to LSU not once but twice. Lot of fun.

2004 was the only year David Greene did NOT lose to Florida and we lost to Tennessee & Auburn. Damn it. You want to know why Tennessee played 13 games and we played 12 in 2004 ? Because David Greene beat the Tennessee vols in 2001 on the hobnailed boot to Verron Haynes his freshman year and then NEVER matched that win again over any team ranked in the Top 10 Final AP Poll. Not once. He beat the vols in 2001 but he LOST to South Carolina, Florida, Boston College and Auburn in 2001 and that KNOCKED THE LID OFF THE UGA PROGRAM according to Coach Richt.

Then, in 2002, we lost to Florida again with David Greene.

Then, in 2003 we lost to Florida again and lost to LSU in the regular season and lost to LSU in the postseason with David Greene. Oh, by the way, LSU Won the BCS National Championship Game and the SEC Championship Game and is National Champions, but according to YOU, LSU is not as good as UGA in the Coach Richt Era with a BETTER WON/LOSS RECORD THAN UGA and not 1 but TWO (2) NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Then, in 2004, David Greene beat Florida for his ONLY WIN OVER FLORIDA, but LOST TO TENNESSEE and LOST TO AUBURN, so we played 12 games in 2004 and the damned vols played 13 games in 2004. That’s the 1 year we beat Florida in the 4 year David Greene career. Did I mention that Auburn went UNDEFEATED THIS 2004 SEASON 13-0. Hell, we couldn’t even beat Tennessee vols and let them play 13 games and us only 12. David Greene’s disappointing Senior Year. According to you, this was great. Less than great is what it really was.

Why is it that there are those who cannot talk about the DAMNED LOSSES in the Coach Richt Era ?

They are DEVASTATING LOSSES.

Since then, it has actually gotten WORSE.

2005 we lost to Florida again. Duh. And, the excuse for Coach Richt this time was that DJ Shockley was injured and couldn’t play. Then, we go to Auburn and DJ Shockley tries to play and we still lose to Auburn. Then, I go to the damned Sugar Bowl at the Georgia Damn Dome and Michael F. Freaking Adam$ is there being introduced to a chorus of boos and 5 MINUTES LATER, we are LOSING 28 TO FRIQIN’ NOTHING. I love me some Georgia Football.

And, according to YOU, we are Freaking Great.

No we are NOT.

We have a horrible group of nobody coaches who are all FLAKES. In case you have missed it, Brian VanGorder’s Falcons Defense is the dead last worst defense in the NFL.

2, not 1, but 2 of the coaches just FIRED by Coach Richt have BOTH walked out of their jobs 1 day after they started them with their NEW TEAMS.

And, we are left with a RUNNING BACK coaching WIDE RECEIVERS, a WIDE RECEIVER coaching RUNNING BACKS, a QUARTERBACK coaching TIGHT ENDS and an OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR BOOED BY EVERY FAN AT SANFORD STADIUM who has in his coaching career coached Quarterbacks 1 Year only at JACKSONVILLE STATE and HE IS OUR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.

Mike Bobo has led the nation in penalties, fumbles and interceptions, and wasted talent.

But, we are going to go through this in progression and we made it to 2005 you said was great. And, now we move along to 2006.

2006. We cannot figure out that the Knowshon Moreno is the best Running Back at Georgia in the last 3 Decades. So we redshirt him and get to watch him play one year and a half. We also can’t figure out who our Quarterback is in 2006. We say 1 then another, then back to the first one, then on to another all together and back to the 2nd one.

2006 was NOT FREAKING GREAT idiot.

2006 we Lost to Florida again (Notice the trend yet of the team you say we are BETTER THAN IN THE COACH RICHT ERA patrick ?), We lost to a miserable Kentucky team who Lost 5 games but NOT TO COACH RICHT. We Lost to Tennessee again Damn It, and please notice that Coach Richt has been the HIGHER RANKED TEAM THAN THE VOLS 8 CONSECUTIVE SEASONS AND COUNTING NOW BUT HAS LOST HALF 4 OF THOSE GAMES HEAD-TO-HEAD. Did I mention we LOST to VANDERBILT AN 8-LOSS FREAKING TEAM.

Next thing I know, you are in here bragging to Florida fans that UGA is great and that specifically 2006 was a GREAT YEAR FOR COACH RICHT.

Compared to Freaking What ?

Certainly not compared to Vanderbilt.

By the way, sans the National Championship for Florida AGAIN.

Now, we are up to 2007 and Mike Bobo promoted to Offensive Coordinator replacing DUI Offensive Coordinator Neil Callaway.

God we have a horrible coaching staff and HAVE HAD the ENTIRE 10-YEAR NOW HISTORY OF THE COACH RICHT ERA.

Coach Richt I actually like.

His “coaching staff” is BEYOND ALL REASON the worst in the nation.

And, I can prove it.

And, continue to do so.

Where are we up to now ?

2007.

2007, we lose to 6-LOSS NOT EVEN IN A DAMNED BOWL GAME South Carolina. God Almighty God. Then, to top that off, we LOSE TO FOUR 4-LOSS Tennessee vols. Noticing then trend yet D.A. patrick ? 35-14 this vols’ blow-out of Coach Richt. The vols FIRE THEIR COACH for that season. But, the vols play 14 games and Coach Richt ? 13. Do you even KNOW WHY patrick ?

Because we freaking

LOST

to the

vols again.

Coach Richt has had the HIGHER RANKED team 8 Consecutive Seasons and Counting Now, and has LOST to the vols HALF THE TIME.

8 times Higher Ranked Team last 8 years.

4 LOSSES to the vols anyway last 8 games.

The “dreaded mat drills”…..can we put to rest this idea that GA is doing something that nobody else does, like these are something special….and maybe even NOT doing as much? Maybe we need to do more, to push them more and do things to develop MORE strength and more quickness, we we have seemed to see less and less the last number of years. You can’t make someone that much faster but you can certainly make them more intense, stronger and have more endurance in the second half.

Why don’t we skip the mat drills

And, teach just 1 QB after DJ Shockley how NOT to throw interceptions

Sans the LSU National Championship AGAIN in 2007, we were great, right ?

2008 we gave up

31 straight points to Alabama

42 straight points to Florida

29 straight points to Georgia tek

Lost all 3 of those 2008

patrick says that’s just wonderfully terrific

Sans the Florida National Championship AGAIN

2009 we are not ranked in either the Coaches’ or the AP Poll
