Report: Willie Martinez has ‘change of heart,’ takes job at Oklahoma

Former Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez apparently is in high demand.

Rivals.com this morning reports that Martinez  has accepted an assistant coaching job at Oklahoma several days after reportedly accepting a similar job at Stanford.

Here’s the latest  report from national football writer Tom Dienhart:

Willie Martinez has accepted an assistant coaching job at Oklahoma, Rivals.com has learned.

Martinez recently took a position as secondary coach at Stanford, but he has had a change of heart. Martinez coached defensive backs for nine seasons at Georgia and was defensive coordinator for five years in Athens before being fired after last season.

Oklahoma hasn’t announced a hire of Martinez.

An opening was created on head coach Bob Stoops‘ Oklahoma staff when defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator Chris Wilson left to become the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Mississippi State.

Because Martinez’s background is in coaching defensive backs, The Oklahoman newspaper notes on its Website this morning: “It’s unclear what position group he’ll coach in Norman if the report is true.”

Stay tuned.

Anyone notice how Richt’s indecisiveness has rubbed off on his coaches? Willie to Stanford to Oklahoma and Fabris to Oklahoma(’08)back to UGA to Athens, Ga. Time for a change for the better.

I gotta believe that the last coaching position on UGA’s staff will likely go to Travis Jones, I haven’t heard any news whatsoever in regards to it recently, I think they are just waiting for the superbowl to wrap up and an official offer will be made. Otherwise they would have contacted someone else by now will signing day approaching and the Saints and Colts are the only two teams in football still playing…

Think about it this way Bob Stoops will not let Willie get away with the things Mark Richt did. I always thought that Willie needed someone to mentor him and he would go from the makings of a good coach to a pretty good coach. Mark Richt could have saved himself a lot of greif by bringing in a seasoned DC to bring Willie up to speed. It’s alll part of the learning curb. Best of luck to Willie.

How2fart,

What do you think? Was his knee down? Did the ground cause the fumble?

Logic, You not logical or Smart when you say the SEC has a Big 0 at the position, check the last 4 NFL drafts buddy and you’ll see that 2 QB’s from the SEC not only were taken in the first round, but first overall, and if you want to see what comes out of the SEC in the qb form, please sit in front of your T,V. on Sunday and watch Picasso(a.k.a. Manning) perform. Also notice that Stafford, Cutler, Shockley, J.P. Wilson, Eric Ainge, Andre Woodson, Jared Lorenson, Jason Campbell, Brodie Croyle, Eli Manning are all on active rosters in the NFL. OH AND HERE’S JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER TO ALL other conferences. The BCS nat’l title trophy lives in the SEC! Bow down to your kings of FOOTBALL!l

Yellow fuzz we beat your ass that is the long and short of it. The best part is your coach just melted down…he when crazy and ordered 4 pass plays and lost he game by being out coached by CWM and CMR ..and then look just how great he did against Iowa….he has been measured and found wanting…in big boy football…he is aces in the ACC..on and yellow fuzz ang it way 30-24..and what was the BGS score again..

Jaglaw, your QB couldn’t handle the Okie State D let alone OU’s. Did you happen to see what OU did against the two common opponants Georgia and OU had this past season with OSU and A&M? Neither team could stay on the field with a down OU team.

Just like in the enterview with CMR the other day. When these kids choose to go somewhere, there is no more thought given to them. I feel it should be the same wtih the Coaches. It is a tough decision CMR had to take. However I think it was best now for a fresh start for both parties involved.
Good luck to Coach Martinez, and thank you for your contributation to UGA. I know you gave it your all while you were here. I also know how much time you take from your Other Family also. People don’t realize how much of a sacrafice you and your family members give. Thanks again and Nothing but the best for you and your Family.
