Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins first-round NFL draft picks?

How much did former UGA defensive tackles Geno Atkins and Jeff Owens help themselves at the Senior Bowl?

So much that they possibly could become late first-round picks in this year’s NFL draft, according to Russ Lande, a former NFL scout who evaluates players for Sporting News.

Both Owens and Atkins were identified by Lande “and his team of former NFL scouts” among seven players who helped their draft stock at the Senior Bowl.

Writing in today’s edition of  Sporting News Today, Lande said Atkins’ strong performance will move him into the second round of the draft and, if sustained in spring workouts, could get him into the bottom of the first round. Owens, Lande writes, was considered “a likely third- or fourth-round pick” before the Senior Bowl practices and game but is now seen “as a definite second-rounder, with a good chance to move into the first round.”

It was a week of good reviews for Atkins and Owens in Mobile. A few days ago, Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano — coach of the South squad for the Senior Bowl — was quoted in  the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on the UGA DT  tandem:  “They’re both certainly high-energy guys that play with great fundamentals. Really are fundamentally very, very good. Do a super job that way. I enjoy watching those kind of guys play that play with that kind of energy, run around pretty well, give you fits up front offensively, show good strength at the point of attack, those type of things. They’re a handful for some of those linemen. They’ve done a nice job this week so far.”

Here’s  the full analysis on Atkins from Sporting News’ Lande:

Atkins (6-1, 286) came to Mobile viewed as an undersized lineman who would struggle matching up against much bigger NFL guards. But after an excellent week of practice and a strong showing in the game, we are confident he has eliminated those doubts.

He consistently showed the rare quickness and explosiveness to shoot gaps and blow up plays in the backfield. As a smaller tackle, he shocked many NFL people with his strength against much bigger blockers. Atkins’ strong Senior Bowl will move him into the second round. If he can sustain his performance in spring workouts, he could move into the bottom of the first round.

And on Owens:

Owens did not have a dominant college season in his return from a season-ending knee injury in 2008. As a result, NFL people wondered if he would ever get back to being the player he was before the injury. Owens erased many of those concerns by shining at Mobile.

He dominated at the point of attack with strength, hand use and the explosiveness to jolt blockers. But what grabbed the NFL’s attention most was Owens’ ability to beat one-on-one pass blocks with very quick pass-rush moves. Before the Senior Bowl, Owens was considered a likely third- or fourth-round pick. Now, he is viewed as a definite second-rounder, with a good chance to move into the first round.

I dont think this news comes as a surprise to many UGA fans. Both of these guys can be dominant. I know of all the negative press that our Dawgs have received in recent times but if your folks would spend a little time looking at that 08 team that was just blistered with injury you will find that winning as many games as we did that year was quite an achievement in itself. 09 brought us Joe for his senior year and he proved on somewhat of an incosistant basis that he was not up for a premeir SEC QB performance (he did have a few bright spots). We obviously had no one behind him. I don’t think either of the freshman could have jumped in and got the job done (didnt know the offense well enough) and Logan was apparently not someone Richt felt comfortable with in the position. If he had, there sure was plenty of opportunity for him to have stepped in. I believe that was stricktly due to playing a position that is not best for Logan. The Dawgs are going to be better this year then most think. We too have some redshirts that can play some ball and some experience that can compete at a top level. The new DC will be a welcome change to fans that just want to see their defense “get after it” as they have done in the past. I think most of us would be very receptive to being burned every now and then if just did not play those corners soft and put intense pressure on the QB. It’s coming. You take that type of defense coupled with a decent OL, probaby 6 receivers that are NFL caliber, 2 or 3 running backs that will not fall short at Tailback U. and a QB with a good head on his shoulders that will not make silly mistakes……..by golly…I think we have a team that will not lose more than 2. Just my opionion…..but we are loaded with talent in key positions…….Heck..I think most UGA fans would agree that we have not put together a complete game against an upper tier team in a couple of years. Go Dawgs!!

Way to go guys!

Bad news about Tebow, he apparently had the WORST showing at Senior Bowl and is now condiered UNDRAFTABLE by BOTH ESPN experts.

Georgia continues to get guys ready for the NFL. Georgia has more players in the NFL than Florida, LSU, Bama, or USC.

Here’s a list of the 45 Georgia guys active in the NFL right now:

Techies have commented on here in recent days about the lack of talent that comes from UGA into the NFL. What idiots. UGA consistently puts talented players in the NFL and that certainly can’t hurt in the minds of those on the fence just before signing day. We will have a great signing class and with the restructuring of our coaching staff may finally be at the level we have expected in recent years.

Great link, Pipeline. You could put together a pretty good team with that list of names.

I’m excited for next season, and am looking forward to big things out of the Dawgs. I think that our team talent, fresh coaching perspective and an SEC East that’s up for grabs, we’ll be in a much better bowl next year.

Birdman,
I have not been one to harp about our S&C program, but I do think we need to increase the emphasis on conditioning. I don’t doubt that the strength part is necessary in today’s college football, especially in the SEC, but I feel that if conditioning is not “up there”, any team will have a problem with injuries. I feel that a greater number of injuries occur when players are tired, and we certainly have seemed to be bitten by the injury bug in recent years. It seems to me that conditioning is even more important now that strength is such a big factor.

These 2 players were decent, but not dominant.
My opinion on j.o. is MAYBE low 2nd or high to mid 3rd round at best.
Question, how many sacks did he have?
Was play on keystone cops defense causing him to not play to his potential.
I know he got hurt the year before but seemed like a under-achiever.
As for g.a. , he should have had more penetration and more QB hurries and a few more sacks.
my opionion on where he will land would be similar to j.o.
Curran may be your best player coming out, although a small LB.
This is my take on this story, as an outsider.

Everyone who blogs should take notice and understand how someone with another fielty can come on our sites, say something lukewarm or better about the Dawgs and then lead you on a merry ride down the road to team negativity. Heads up!, chumps. You are being played by others because you don’t read widely and understand your team. If you have no personal faith in our staff and players over the last few years then you are A target for these rival bloviators. If you have nothing good to contribute then stay off the comments section. You add to the knives cutting at our spirit in order for others to gain the upper hand over our program. Don’t be stupid and fall for it! Add positive comments to discussion of your team. The negative commentors are NOT UGA fans and your positive comments can help chase them to other team sites to influence fans who don’t know or appreciate what they have.

Championships are something attained slowly and consistently with hard work by the staff and team as well as positive upwelling of support by us fans when events don’t go well. Accept the fact that team members feel worse than anyone when bad things happen and go from there. Sounds like we have some tough Dawgs signing up in the next few days and they ,as well as current players signing last year and the years before, need our support for what is offered and delivered on the UGA field of play. GO DAWGS! WOOF!, WOOF!, WOOF!. This should be a good year.

Attitude and desire

January 31st, 2010
3:54 pm

Attitude and a competitive, tough nature, fueled by personal desire to compete at the highest SEC levels have been missing on UGA’s defense for a few years now. Certainly since BVG’s departure is this true. CWM simply could not/did not get the players to play with attitude and aggression. Against a Florida or a Bama, they played simply to not lose and look what happened in 08 with Bama and in 08,09 with Florida. This will change with the arrival of CTG and it will be very obvious to all. UGA’s schedule will ALSO help them get better.

UGA looked aggressive in the tech game but that was a function of tech being just a lousy, sissy ACC team and not so much what or how UGA’s d played. Reshad JOnes for one, did play far better than he did in 08 s Tech and in 09, his play helped UGA seal what was a sure thing anyway. Had the Georgia tacklers made LOCK UP tackles rather than arm tackling, they would have won also in 08. In fact, 08 vs Tech was about to become a major blow out but arm tackling caused uGA to lose that one. 1-8 is how it stands anway and all but the most casual Yech? UGA observers know that Georgia CONTROLS THIS STATE.

Wow …………..Tebow is about to be a fullback, Anyone see the Senior Bowl? He is toast as a QB. He will be fabulous in the NFL as a fullback.

I can understand the concern for a player coming back from an injury, but if these kids did so much better than anticipated at the practice and game than anticipated, does that mean that they were poorly coached/utilized while playing at UGA these past few seasons? It didn’t make sense that both of them did so much better than expected. They obviously had the physical tools to be successful, and they obviously learned some techniques quickly, so the kids are also bright.

To everybody complaining about no NC’s with this talent. Remember that a NC is determined by the BCS nonsense. Most of the time it requires alot of luck. Look it up if you don’t believe me. The last 10 years UGA has put together teams in 3 seasons that could compete with anybody. Unfortunately luck has not been on our side yet. But one thing is for sure UGA, has been pretty darn consistent the last 10 years, sooner or later luck will be on our side and lookout.

developed by the NFL. This will eventually come back to bite the
Gators in their big green arse. Georgia has not produced NFL QB’s
either in recent years up to this point but until Stafford CMR did
not have NFL quality talent to work with. But look at Richt’s history
as a whole and he has pretty well getting QB’s ready for the NFL.
The same cannot be said of Urban Meyer. One last thing if you think
that the Lions are not elated to have Stafford as their QB you are
even more delusional than I think. But that’s alright you just keep
thinking that Tebow’s flopping won’t have an impact on future
recruiting at that position.

“They’re both certainly high-energy guys that play with great fundamentals. Really are fundamentally very, very good. Do a super job that way.”

This is great praise for Rodney Garner, and why I am so happy the Dawgs retained him as DL coach. There are quite a few players in the NFL right now that have Garner to thank for that.

it’s pretty sad knowing that bunch in atlanta called the falcons will not go after those two super players from UGA, Atkins and Owens. Of course if they did they would probably trade them like they did to Brett Favre..the best quaterback who ever play pro football…bar none. That is why the lowly falcons will forever be labeled as losers!!!

These guys were well coached by Garner. For those looking for sacks, I don’t know many DTs that have large numbers of sacks. They are there to eat up the middle and stuff the run. DEs and LBs are should be getting the sacks and large numbers of tackles. The DTs push the middle of the line back and change the line of scrimmage. O and A will do fine in the NFL.

Keep it simple dawg fans. We want to win and win bad, compete again for the SEC east, the SEC title and the big dance. It has to happen with personnel and recruiting first. Believe we have our man on the defensive side, now we have to fix the offense. Especially the make shift O-Line UGA has been putting together the past few years. I know we have had injuries, but the depth chart has been lean, very lean. I thought Stacy Searels was supposed to address and fix that? Look at Bama’s and Florida’s depth chart. We are behind. Next year will be a rebuilding year, last year was a demo year. Maybe Richt will call the play.

I especially noticed the comments about Ownes and Atkins’ fundamentals. That says that these guys were well-groomed by Coach Garner. Alternatively, I heard lots of knocks on the fundamentals of Jerry, the Falcons 1st round DT pick from a year ago out of Ole Miss. All this leads me to believe that it was our system and not the play of individuals (tackling troubles aside) that was the real culprit in our recent defensive woes.

As a Dawg Fan(for life) even though I played my college ball in the BIG TEN(born and raised in Athens), it puzzles me and bothers me that so much talent on this team continues to make the jumps through the pro ranks with success, but it hasn’t been put together in Athens. The hiring of Gratham, the new DC better bring huge dividends, because with Fla, Lsu, now Ala on the seen now winning nat’l championships, DAWG NATION and the Big Money is getting a little impatient. With Atkins, Owens, Rennie Curran, and Rashad Jones all possibly going in the first three rounds, the people are gonna start asking why is all this talent making it to the NFL, but can’t put it all together here. Last year alone three guys off this Defense made it on NFL Rosters(Irwin,Wynn, Allen), now we are looking at four more guys on the same defense. Dawg nation even you must admit that something has to be fixed. Jusat like the top schools in the BIG TEN, PATIENCE IS LACKING when it comes to winning. UGA, Get er Done!

Just goes to prove the talent has always been in Athens but the COACHING has been somewhere else! And defense is not the only excuse! I am sick of watching us struggle offensively each year against Florida. Penalties show lack of discipline….and that is entirely on the coaching staff and can’t be explained away by firing Martinez! Should have ran the entire staff out of town! Well….except our great recruiter.

UGA’s 10-3 team 2 years ago is going to have 7 out of the 11 players on defense playing in the NFL this next season and we gave up an average of over 30 points a game. That is pathetic. He has to go down as the worst DC ever in college football. All that talent wasted. Too bad b/c with Stafford and knowshon we had the offense to go all the the way. We did finish #2 that year but could have been playing in the big game if we had a competent DC.

Dan

I think Swamp people are idiots they dont understand the purpose of college. National Championships are great dont get me wrong would love to see UGA in more but the fact is having National Championships only helps the head coach and their staff in either A) Getting a raise or B)getting a promotion. . The purpose of going to college is to get a job that is why if you are supposed to be drafted in the 1st round you go? Bradford and Gresham for Oklahoma and Mays from USC are great examples of players who have lost loads of money staying their senior year by either getting injured or in Mays case his weakness of not being able to cover someone. To reiterate the entire purpose of going to college is to get a job!!! And my looking at the numbers UGA undisputedly either recogonizes talent in HS or is able to provide these players the skillset to achieve at the next level is why UGA has so many players in the NFL. Instead of Florida running a proset they are running gimicks and shotgun continuously which we are now seeing the results of Tebow possibly not being drafted and Stafford going #1 overall. So I pose the question as if you were the player would you rather have a Heisman and also a National Championship or would you rather have the deal Stafford got for $72 million, with $41.7 million guaranteed. The contract could be worth as much as $78 million if Stafford achieves all of his playing incentives….I believe a no-brainer..

If Owens and Atkins go on to do well in the NFL it will piss me off for a number of reasons.

1. They’ll slack off and play on a defense that gives up over 40 points in 3 games, yet play well when money is involved? I mean if you’re concerned about you draft status, why not at least be dominant at your position in college to impress the scouts? Those guys were pretty much invisible for most of the year.

2. It says we have a team of mercenaries. What good does NFL talent do for your program if it doesn’t translate into championships for you?

3. Our coaching staff clearly doesn’t know how to utilize the NFL talent we do have. They’ll red shirt Knowshon Moreno in favor of DANNY FREAKIN WARE! They keep Drew Butler on the bench for two years, and then the guy wins the Ray Guy award for best punter in the NATION his first year on the job. I saw Drew Butler play at the high school level booming 60 yard punts! No way was that Brian Mimbs kid better than him! Coaches said his punt average sucked at UGA when he got there. Well kids like Drew are motivated to play. When you’re a talented kid and you have to play behind someone who isn’t better than you, what’s your motivation for improving? UGA does this crap all the time. Play your best player, regardless if they are a freshman or 5th year senior!
