Grantham: Dogs can be better than Florida, Texas, Southern Cal

Athens – I’m pretty sure Georgia fans are going to love these words from Todd Grantham, the Bulldogs’ new defensive coordinator:

“Over the last 11 years [in the NFL], I have evaluated a lot of players from this state –- not only players of the University of Georgia but players that have played everywhere else, too,” Grantham said today.  “And I have always believed -– and I believe to this day – that if we took the best players in the state of Georgia and within a five-hour radius of our school, if they come to the University of Georgia, then we can win the SEC championship and compete for a national title. And I think you can be better than Florida, you can be better than Texas, and you can be better than Southern Cal – if those players came to the University of Georgia. So that’s what excited me about coming here.”

Grantham’s hiring a week ago has been well received by Georgia fans, who probably will like it even more after hearing the intense new guy in town talk about being better than Florida, Texas and USC. . . .

A few other things from today’s session with Grantham:

Turning down Nick Saban: Yes, Grantham confirmed, he was offered a job in 2005 as the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator by Saban, the noted defensive genius. But Grantham, who previously  worked for Saban at Michigan State, turned down the Dolphins’ job  to take the defensive-coordinator position with the Cleveland Browns instead.  “Basically it got down to a geographical decision, really,” he explained, noting that Cleveland is  closer than Miami to his Virginia hometown.

– Evaluating his new players: Grantham said the first step is to study film on them.  “Right now what I’ve done is with the two graduate assistants, who I can tell you do a great job; these guys are unbelievable. I’ve had those guys [Todd Hartley and Mitch Doolittle, who famously filled in as coaches when the staff was short-handed for the bowl game]  pull off about 25 or 30 plays of each [player]. That kind of gives you a feel for the player. So we’ll look at those and get a feel for each guy.”  Soon Grantham will get to know the players in the off-season program, and then he’ll have them on the field in spring practice. “It’s a process that will be ongoing all the way up until next [season], but you got to start somewhere,” he said. “And we’re going to start with the evaluation of what they have done so far.”

– NFL vs. college: Grantham, whose first two coaching jobs were at Virginia Tech and Michigan State,  spent the past 11 years in the NFL. He said he went there initially to enhance his future as a college coach.  “I always had an aspiration to coach in pro football, and the reason is that it is the graduate school of coaching. It’s the best players, it’s the best systems, and it is the best coaches to a point -– not that there aren’t great coaches in college. But you do get challenged up there. So I looked forward to that challenge. But, really, I wanted to do that to enhance my career in college. I have always had aspirations of being a coordinator and a head coach one day, and I felt like, what better [than the NFL] on your resume when you to into a home [recruiting]? . . . That way when I walk into a home, my resume could speak for where I could help the kid go. And that’s really one of the reasons I went to pro football. Over the past 11 years, there have been some opportunities to come back to college, but the timing was never right and I never felt as strongly as I did about this job.”

Also: Grantham says Rodney Garner will remain the Dogs’ D-line coach.

BuLLdawg, long but probably the best post that I have read on the AJC. I have lived in this beautiful state for 5 years now and have gone to all home games and some away (always jax) for the last 3 years with girlfriend. UGA has great players, as good as any other team and better than most. Simply stated they have underachieved and Granthams comments about the NFL players prove that the talent has always been here. I root for UGA everygame except one and hope that Grantham does change the culture. Whoever the person is who wants to redshirt all of these players (knowshon, washaun for part of season) is an idiot. Great players (except tebow) do not stay to graduate. Urbans real success is he tells players if you are good enough for special teams then you will be on the field, if not you will redshirt. Look at UF’s kickoff and punt teams and they are loaded with top true freshman. Grantham is a breath of fresh air, even for me.

UGA = Under Grown A**hole

A lot of contradiction between Opinion and Fact.

The fact of the matter is we have achieved and exceeded the level of recruiting class rankings. We have not had a #2 class in recruiting but finished #2 in the Nation three years ago.

We have also finished in the top ten other years as well matching recruitment rankings.

Do we want to be #1, YES! So does everyone else. We have been close but not there yet. Grantham hopefully will bring a different approach taking us to the next level.

People get on this Site and start spewing false information not having a clew that their entry is true or false just to pi$$ others off.

When that happens you just have to consider the source is a duba$$!

I thank UGA and TECHs new DCs will do well!!! My question if TECH and UGA make it to the championship, do they both pull the high school card and say we got bigger things to focus on??????? TECH fans you and your coaches said that after the UGA loss……………

Its only Jan and we are talking about predictions. Here is my take on next year for the two school…….

TECH, lost alot more then UGA and the ACC is stronger!!! I thank the U and FSU or back. Alot to replace on that O and how do u replace those two all americans on the D. I do belive Al is goin to be an upgrade but maybe not enough. TECH goes 7-5 or 8-4 Peach Bowl or next game up…

UGA has alot of big holes to feel. Granthem is a big mystery… He lost alot on the D that has to be replaced and plus all the holes on the offense side if the ball. UGA has a lot less stressful schedule… I thank UGA may rebound but will go 8-4 or 9-3… Maybe Outback bowl?

FCS football is the best, I agree with you about tech but UGA does not have any holes on offense except the unknown at QB. They have a returning offensive line, great receivers and arguably 2 of the top 5 running backs in the SEC. I think they will do no worse than 10-3 with either a win in the Citrus or Outback.

look foward to seeing the dawgs get back to their winning ways after a year losing their best players early yet again to the nfl. if the coaches feel that the player needs to redshirt than im ok with that. better for the player to be better prepared the next year. as long as uga keeps putting players in the nfl the recruting will be fine. richt seems to be doing just fine the way his teams are playing and winning more times than not. his national title will be here soon enough and then bulldawg can finally quit crying about how bad a job richt is doing..

bulldawg,,sit back and enjoy the ride and just relax. mark richt and company will get uga over the top.. we have a stronger more experienced team coming back next year with most of our starters returning on offense and defense. also throw in some redshirt freshmen who are very talented and now a year older and wiser filling in for the missing seniors on the def line…uga will beat fla this year just like they did 2 years ago. no worries

When was the last time UGA ever fulfilled their so-called potential based on their incoming class draft rank or talent on their roster?”

2007 and 2005 were both years we overachieved based on the incoming class recruiting ranks and the talent on our roster. Thanks for asking.

i think if uga beats fla( which uga will have the better team) next year then uga wins the east and if they win the east they get a shot at ala in the sec championship. even if they lose that game to ala that is still a great rebound from this past year with alomost everyone coming back for that 2011 season which will be a great year for the bulldogs. the tide has turn once again in favor for the bulldogs. while teams like fla and tenn are going young next year and ala the following year uga will be primed and ready with a team full of jrs and srs on both sides of the ball for a shot at the National Title game.

ga gator

ugaaccountant, I disagree. Staffords junior year, UGA should have won the SEC east at least, you had 2 players from that team drafted in the top 10 in the NFL draft; they under acheived. When it comes to recruiting rankings, there is not much difference in the top 10 rankings. If you consistently have a top 10 class then it is up to the coaching talent to push them over the top.

atl-xmen

ga gator its not that hard to believe..look back at the teams that won it all the last 5 years or so…team is full of jrs and srs…the last two years uga has to play mostly sophs with sr and jrs scatterd around due to injuries or early entries to the nfl. just a matter of time when uga wins the sec again and with that comes a shot at the title thanks to all the good teams the sec have.

atl-xmen, we will certainly see. Our schedule breaks pretty well for us next year and truth is, it really comes down every year to who wins in Jax. My predicted order for the east is UF, UGA, KY, SC, Tenn and Vandy. See you in Jax.

atl-xmen

January 23rd, 2010

staffords jr year he had mostly freshmen and sophs blocking for him that didnt match up really well with fla and ala jrs and srs in the trenches, which can cost a team a victory when the teams are even with the amount of talent on a team.(like fla and ala) now next year uga will have all the experience in the trenches on offense and the offense should look much better even with a red shirt freshmen calling the plays. on def uga will be young on the line but pretty solid at the ends and linebacker position..corners will be a year older and wiser having to play early this past year should help them out. and with a more agressive style of play might even help them use there speed and quickness to get turnovers. ints for touchdowns will happen more often.

Like I said, we will find out in Jax. We also have several players who missed last year with injuries coming back; the #2 receiver from 08, starting outside LB from 08 and 2 starters from the beginning on the OL at the beginning of 09 coming back plus I like our chances with the 06 High School player at QB over an unknown at QB for your team. This I will also agree with; UGA will be better than last and we will be not as good on defense but better on offense, so it should make for a very competitive game. What your team has to overcome is getting UF out of their head. There have been several more talented teams for UGA get beat by the Gators. Cant wait, see you in Jax (plus all of the home UGA games I attend).

Boss, You are correct and Grantham is right; there is no reason UGA cannot be as good as any of the other top 3 ( I dont consider Boise because they play in a weak conference). UGA has the facilities, fan base, money and are in the right conference. The team needs only to do 3 things: play to their ability not competition, make Sanford stadium not just a beautiful setting but a place that they OWN and 3rd get UF out of their heads. Florida is in their heads the same way FSU was in ours was when Spurrier was at UF.

9-4, possibly 10-3.

When we are 3rd and 10, we run the football.

Our Runnings Back Coach never played the posiiton and doesn’t know how to teach a running back to carry the ball, hold on to it.

Our receivers coach never played there either, and he taught AJ Green ? But, can’t teach Marlon Brown ? What’s the deal with 3 Tight Ends who can play in the NFL and we don’t give it to any of them ? And, what is the deal when we were struggling running the ball that we never gave it to the 2 NFL Fullbacks ? Our quarterbacks ? Did you see evidence we taught Matthew Stafford to value the football with 18 fumbles and 33 interceptions to 51 TD passes ? Did you see evidence we taught Logan Gray a thing ? Joe Cox, he was readied by our coaches on Offense ?

Oh, so now we have 3 Quarterbacks who are Freshmen. You think we have those ready, I see.

After this season, we lose 14 seniors and 6 Juniors.

We will have stripped the team.

This recruiting class is not nearly up to snuff compared to the Number 7 class every year for 9 previous years.

This class will end up about Number 13.

9-4 maybe 10-3.

But none of that crap really matters anyway. Not kidding here, but what UGA really needs is a sports psychologist. I have been to most of the games (jax) since the late 80’s and since 1990 you have lost many times when you had better talent. For some reason, UF is in their heads.

It will be glaring the Great Defense compared to the poorly coached, Offense.

Then, maybe about the time Todd Grantham goes to be head coach somewhere where they have great players like we do here in this state (which narrows it down to California, Florida and Texas only) then, maybe Coach Richt will get us an offensive coordinator.

As CEO, he has made 1 great coaching decision.

Does anyone really think Coach Richt hired Todd Grantham ?

They took that decision out of his hands.

The days leading up to the hire, Coach Richt was doing ANYTHING but trying to hire a D.C.

BULLDAWG

I think there is a good chance you could be a political strategist in charge of spin if you ever wanted to get out of your moms basement and get a job.

All those teams you list that have out performed UGA over what ever time period. What happened to the argument you presented before about how bad those teams really were no matter how they ranked? Remember how Texas is really no good since they only beat one top 25 team this year and that was NE and they shouldn’t be in the top 50? Remember that? Remember that Boise SHOULD NEVER be ranked in the top 50 just because they beat OU one time years ago. SO which is it? Are those teams better since it fits your argument now or are they worse since that fit your argument before?

If you really want to get a feel for the state of the program, look at the last ten years SEC W vs L. That will give you a better idea of where we are. You might also look and see that no other team in the NATION has as many 8 win season in a row as UGA. Not USC, TX, Boise, ND, NOBODY. They must be doing SOMETHING right over there.

You can certainly criticize recruiting. It is hilarious to me to have these people mad because we don’t do better with a top 10 class every year. Its because the people we play have even better classes. There is no excuse to have incoming classes ranked lower than LSU, UA or AU. UF will always have an advantage because of geographical location and there are alot of really good players in the state. This year AU has no depth at all so many highly ranked recruits are going there to have the opportunity to play sooner. AU wont out recruit GA on many occasions. Also recruiting classes are dependent on what positions you need. If a team gets a great QB they get ranked higher than if they get a great C. There are alot more 5 star QB’s and RB’s than C’s. So class ranking isn’t the best way to evaluate what you bring in.

But the main point is that one year of fumbles and interceptions does not make a program bad. Like I said they are the only D-1 school to have 8 wins in the last 13 years. Not a single school in the country has been that consistent. I think if you feel that it’s so bad in Athens you should pick any one of the other D-1 schools who can’t make that claim and ride their roller coaster a while. I”m tired of reading your crap. You think it you write enough BS that it makes it true. It’s like a colleague of mine who thinks if he argues a case loud enough what he says will turn into being true.

Thanks Grantham. I have been trying to explain this to my fellow Georgians for yrs. A lot of college football fans in south Ga love da gators, I’m a true gator hater. The state of Ga produce just as many players as Fla,USC,TX and Bama. The difference is those colleges keep their best in state players, Ga let some of their best in state players get away. Our young men are going to the programs that’s winning. We produce a lot of NFL talent, but we are not winning SEC or National Championships. Richt got to let his players play, if a guy is talent enough to be multitask on the field then use him. Richt get some speed, you were at FSU you know this and plus UF has killed us with speed

GA GATOR, I’m not labeling you buddy, I just think Ga Gator is similar to Benedict Arnold or Tuscaloosa Tiger.

As far as the 8 wins go, I would argue that it means nothing to you because the team you support can’t make the claim. I am sure most UGA fans would want 13 straight 13 win seasons, and I would argue that the wife beater donning six pack popping crowd that post here expect it and believe for some reason it is their right to have it. It’s the same people that think Erk Russel was the epitome of success when in actuality if he were coaching with the same results today as he had back then this blog would be filled with “Fire Erk Now!”

There is no denying the UF success since Steve Spurrier became coach. I believe that on a consistent basis, no team will be able to compete year in and year out with UF unless they at some point hire an incompetent coach and the reason that is so is due to a combination of geographical area and the technology associated with recruiting today. Unless there is a log jam at a particular position, I believe any kid who isn’t a life long fan of another school would go to UF given the choice. They will consistently gather the best players and should therefore have the best team. I don’t believe there is anything UGA or any other team can do about that besides moving to central Florida. That’s not to say that other teams can’t beat them on a given day, but if 2009 AL plays 2009 UF nine more times UF wins 8 or more. Ole Miss beat them last year. It will happen. But it what won’t ever happen is a 5 loss season unless there is a bad coach. The players they recruit will always bee too good. Better than those, on an overall basis, than those at the other SEC schools.

So I’m not here to debate the superiority of the UF football program, but it’s not only superior to ours but to the rest of the nation as well. This hire was a big step up and it will make us more competitive on a given day against UF than before. If UF has a bad year next year it will be an abboration no an indication of the state of the program. Much like this year for UGA.

I think a strong argument can be made that 6 or 7 of the top 15 teams in the country this past year were found in the SEC no matter their W-L record. Texas only beat 1 top 25 team and that was NE who should have been unranked. The QB’s between Boise and TCU were supposed to be all world. They made Joe Cox look like Joe Namath. Cinci??? PULEASE! minor league. UF was the most talented team in the country and should be most years as long as they keep a decent head coach and remain located in central FL.

I only commented to you as I can’t understand someone who doesn’t pull for the home team. Thats all.
