A $250,000 raise for turning down the Dogs

Here’s the rest of the story on John Chavis‘ decision to remain at LSU rather than becoming Georgia’s defensive coordinator:

The Baton Rouge Advocate reports today that the LSU Board of Supervisors next week will be asked to approve a new three-year, $700,000-per-year deal for Chavis, who is entering his second year as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.  That represents  a $250,000-per-year raise from Chavis’ $450,000 salary last year.

When LSU announced on Dec. 31 that Chavis would remain at the school despite being pursued by Georgia, LSU made it clear he’d get a sizeable raise.   How sizeable was not disclosed at the time. Turns out, the raise comes to a whopping 55 percent.

The $700,000 salary does not include postseason bonuses, according to the Advocate.

The rising market for coordinator salaries in college football did not start with Georgia’s search for Willie Martinez’s replacement. But the search, which ended with Grantham becoming the third highest paid defensive coordinator in college football and three other candidates getting large raises to stay put, certainly solidified the trend.

Georgia last week hired Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham, signing him to a three-year, $750,000-a-year contract –  more than double what Martinez was paid last year ($325,815).

Georgia  is believed to have offered the same three-year, $750,000-per-year deal to Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who decided not to return to his alma mater three days before the hiring of Grantham.  Alabama has not yet disclosed Smart’s new salary.

Earlier in the process, Georgia pursued Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster,  who stayed with the Hokies after having his contract sweeteed with an annuity that will pay him a lump sum -– reportedly as much as $1 million –- if he remains in the job another five years.

It’s a good time to be a defensive coordinator in demand.

Just glad we got what seems to be a great hire! I liked Grantham better than the others anyway! If we were gonna try and get a guy in a lateral move from another school, my choice would have been Ellis Johnson over these other guys, but I’m tickled things went the way they did, because, IMHO we got the best coach available!!

Actually, I can see Cox making a fine coach some day. He’s a student of the game. It just didn’t transfer on the field. But, any time I watched him on the sidelines during the games, he was coaching up his teammates as much as anyone else!

Glad we could increase the costs at other schools. That means more of their revenues go to assistant coaching and is deflected from recruiting and other competitive expenses. Well done!

I’ll believe in Bulldog nation when thay start beating Fla. on a consistant bases. Maybe even if they start being competative against Fla. You know what I mean, say they win next year, then lose 2 in row, but had a chance to win…that would be ok. This constant whipping they take by the gators is just tooooo much. Stop drinking the koolaid. Stop believing that Ga. recruits the best players, top five, this is our year, etc. etc. Lets see what happens.

Chavis while at UT

January 21st, 2010
11:41 am

Blah, blah blah. Chavis was unpopular while at UT, especially in his last two or three years there.
Richt knew well and good with that reality, that if he hired the guy, it would create an uproar. Unless the two gents tell me in person that an offer was made ( same is true with Foster, etc) I know that it was not offered and I know that UGA got THE RIGHT man in TG.

Smart AND Saban talked to TG over the last few months about schemes and that says it all. TG is far more knowledgeable than KS.

Besides ………the season is fast approaching and we will find out if Meyer is still in rehab and is the wishbone at tech still THE thing and if the UGA qbs can play SEC caliber ball and IF TG can coach em up. Great to look forward to.

Yes, another SEC season is fast approaching and I look forward to it.

To hire a new coach and “ask four men” to come to UGA is to ask four gorgeous UGA/Bama/UT/UF/Auburn/Ole Miss etc women out for that ONE night. You need only ONE to have a blast. UGA needed only ONE competent man and the Cowboys did pretty ok with TG as D line coach.

Same is true with quality coaches. They come and they go ……so you get another. Folks that imply that so and so is the ONLY man to coach at DA U are fools and have never, ever had one date or played a down of football. That is like saying “well, um Spurrier left Florida and so they are toast” and it is true with co ordinators and position coaches. Geeeeez, there are some morons on this site.

I asked in an earlier blog about the amount of shoulder injuries UGA sustains. It seems UGA players are having recurring shoulder problems. Is this a training issue or just that football is a rough sport? How do UGA shoulder injuries compare to other teams in the SEC?

At UT…..Chavis was commonly known as “3rd and Chavis”. When UT had the lead with little time left he had the D’backs play about 15 yards off the line of scrimmage. This of course allowed opponents to move down the field and get in position to win. He is better off staying at LSU with that schmuck Les Miles!

you ajc writers are liars. whatever happened to the idea that newspaper reporting required facts to be reported and not stories made up in your head? the only offer UGA made was to Bud Foster. Chavis and Smart were never officially offered the deal, but used the circumstances to get their raises. the only other official offer of the DC job at UGA was to Grantham, who accepted. CMR said all along that he was focused on “his man”, and he would let us know when the deal was sealed. he did just that. too bad you jerk ajc writers are so focused on the techies and smearing Georgia that you avoid reporting facts.

It’s pretty damn sickening actually considering the number of people who are out of work right now due to this pathetic economy. And let’s face it, a great number of these people out of work have far more important jobs than being a football coach.

Nick, if they’re out of work, they don’t HAVE a job. And, chances are, they weren’t doing the job they used to have well enough or they’d still have it.

I don’t begrudge anyone getting the most they can from their employer based on their talent, potential, and the market for their specialty. That’s capitalism, my friend.

CMR may have offered Foster but you have to think the conversation was more in the hope that Foster would recommend someone. Grantham does have stong VT ties. Do you really expect Foster to move after how long he has been at VT? but if he does he would be as close to a sure hire as you can get.

All I have ever read for certain was that CMR talked with Chavis which is understandable most likely to get his input on anyone that may be worth hiring. He was part of a disbanded and respected staff. Where has there been published that UGA put an offer on the table for Chavis?

Smart turned UGA down for reasons that may never fully be known. Plenty of rumors the most credible IMO was that Smart demanded that Garner would be replaced. I wish him the best except when he plays UGA and hope he would be in the running for any new openings at UGA. Most likely as HC or DC in the event CMR leaves.

I am glad 3rd and Chavis wasn’t hired. He was blamed as a part of UT’s problem for 2-3 years. Hopefully Grantham works out, no hire is ever a guarantee. Grantham does have a resume for the job.

Tim Tucker that is OLD NEWS that UGA forced all of our SEC and ACC competitors to spend a hell of a lot more on their coaching staff while we went to the NFL and got what I asked for all along, an NFL coach.

Here is today’s UGA Bulldog NEWS Tim Tucker :

25 Wins a season and this is the 29th Season at UGA for Andy Landers, who is now over 800 Wins in his Career and already named to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

He Graduates ALL of his Players. All.

19 of his former players have played in the WNBA.

429 weeks Andy Landers has been Ranked in the AP Poll, which is 3rd Best in the Nation.

And, tonight Andy Landers beat Pat Summitt for the 15th time head-to-head.

Runner-Up in 1985 and 1996, the 5 Final 4s, 10 Elite 8s, and 16 Sweet 16s, Andy Landers has been ultra successful as a motivator and as a recruiter, along with his main prowess of teaching Defense.

Only 3 teams have done better since 1979 than Andy Landers’ teams, taking the Final AP Poll Rankings and comparing them across all teams.

11 SEC Championships or SEC Tournament Championships for Andy Landers at UGA, and that is 2nd Best in The SEC, the Nation’s Premier Women’s Basketball Conference forever – like Football.

Janet Harris, 4-Time Consensus All-America.

Teresa Edwards won her 1st Gold Medal in 1984, and is the 1st Woman or Man to compete in 5 Olympics in Basketball. Teresa Edwards Won her 4th Gold Medal in 2000.

Katrina McClain competed in 3 Olympics with Teresa Edwards winning the Gold Medal in 1988 and 1996 together as the Backbone of the U.S. Olympics Team.

Recently the vols have had Superior Basketball Teams under Pat Summitt, but the games were not decided until the final basket really ever in the history between Andy Landers and Pat Summitt.

National Coach of the Year 4 times, Andy Landers is a lot of fun to watch coach.

31 All-America UGA Players Andy Landers recruited here.

57 All-SEC Academic Honor Roll, Andy Landers’ Student-Athletes are much better than Georgia tek’s in the classroom, and always have been. These 57 All-SEC Academic Honor Roll players for Andy Landers are in fact his 57 Best Players.

They all Graduate.

Andy Landers so far this year has beat Georgia tek again (he’s Never Lost them in Athens), Oklahoma, Rutgers, Virginia, Kentucky and Pat Summitt’s Tennessee Lady vols, and all 6 of them are Top 25 teams.

He will play another 10 Top 25 teams before the end of the season, and 4 of those are coming up now against 4 Ranked SEC Teams.

We don’t have the typical Andy Landers’ Guards this season, but they are a terror on Defense and push the ball underneath very well to The Bigs. They just can’t hit the broad side of a barn.

He inside play however, has been stellar. Ask the vols, who had lost only 1 game all season long and were Ranked Number 3. Andy Landers was Number 8. Those 2 will change places after tonight.

When Jasmine James makes a basket or Ashley Houts, Andy Landers will have a team like his teams of the past and we shall make a run through The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament yet again this season.

Porsa Phillips and Angel Robinson make a great duo underneath for Andy Landers. Meredith Mitchell is a complete player. They all 5 play Defense as well as any Andy Landers have ever taught. It is really all he teaches. They get it. Tonight, for example, we forced the vols into 23 turnovers, none more crucial than their last.

53-50.

Andy Landers’ Lady Bulldogs and Pat Summitt’s Lady vols are The Class of The SEC.

The Win tonight was in HDTV on ESPN2, the host of the NCAA Women’s Tournament. The SEC Tournament this year is at Gwinnett Arena in Duluth Georgia.

Tennessee and Georgia both could be Number 1 Seeds.

The SEC expects at this point to put 7 SEC Teams in The NCAA Tournament, with only 5 SEC teams not making the Big Dance while the Big East expects to have 8 who will not make the Big Dance.

Notre Dame, you should note, does Consider Itself in the Big East Conference. The BCS gives them a bye playing their soft lousy easy schedules in football, but has changed the rules to favor Notre Dame alone.

It would mean so much to The Lady Dawgs if we would get off our butts and build a replacement for The Stegosaurus.

Playing at Stegeman tonight, Andy Landers on the season, is now 18-1.

Honestly, I think most of these coordinators are overrated for the most sport. I think Charlie Strong is legit. Will Muschamp is solid( his game plan against Bama was solid, it’s not his fault that McCoy got hurt and the offense had 3 turnovers that led to TD’s in that game). But other than that, most of these guys look good with the talent they have.

chipperdawg,

Joe Cox would make a great coach? Is that supposed to be a joke? I’m sorry but that guy has the worst football IQ I’ve ever seen. He played in this offense for 5 years and couldn’t implement it on the field? He’d panic in the pocket when he should have just taken a sack. He’d force throws that lead to INT’s when he should have just thrown the ball away. He get blindsided by defenders because he couldn’t feel a blitz coming. It would be one thing if he didn’t have the talent but made good decisions, but that wasn’t the case at all.

Again, I have no idea why the premise is to compare the 1st nine years of previous coaches to Coach Richt. I love the guy, but he has not put a good product on the field on the offensive side of the football.

There are 3 programs who have been BETTER than Coach Richt in the Coach Richt Era, in The SEC.

Then, of course, there have been Texas, Boise State, Oklahoma, Southern California and Ohio State who have all been significantly BETTER outside our own Conference in the Coach Richt Era.

This leaves us just a very good program who hasn’t won a national championship, and who hasn’t even had 1 great season where we then got to play a great team in a huge great bowl win for UGA on the national stage.

You are fooling yourself if you think that Coach Richt has been BETTER than LSU or Florida in the 9-year Coach Richt Era. We have NOT.

We also are now not as good as Alabama is in addition.

Get out of our own Conference ? No.

Get into the National Scene ? Hawaii Number 19 is our reward for being Number 2 in 2007 in the Final AP Poll. And, Number 3 in the 2002 Season our reward on the National Scene is Number 22 Florida State who had 5-LOSSES.

You can attempt to rewrite history all you want. We don’t have that killer instinct, we are arrested/suspended so far 121 times in only 9 years to lead the nation, we cannot line up on offense and run a play without a penalty, nor complete the play without a turnover.

4 years ago, the national publications stated that UGA was not an Elite Football Program. Historically, we are Number 11 in the Nation at Football. We average Number 13 with Coach Richt in 9 years of Final AP Poll Average Rank # 13.

4 seasons, half his career, we did not deserve to be ranked at all in the Final AP Poll Top 25. 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Note if you will please while you rave out of your mind how absolutely fabulous we are compared to the 1st 9 years of other UGA coaches, that 3 of the last 4 years have been now just God Awful Disappointments.

Maybe you liked the 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2001 seasons.

The National Scene did not think much of those years for UGA.

Our problems are on Offense and you addressed not 1 word so far to that topic, either way.

You did mention that neither Florida nor UGA has a QB prepared to take over this season.

Excuse me, this is another of the huge failings of Coach Richt sir with all due respect.

Florida’s back-up Quarterback completed 75 percent of his passes for 36 of 48 attempts good for 7 touchdown passes and a 194 Quarterback Rating.

Try comparing those to what Coach Richt has ready for this season, again ? I must have missed that or the Recruiting that Florida has destroyed us with.

We have a lousy offense. We have had a lousy offense. Our Offense is our issue next year, when we will have the best 2 kickers on one team in America and 1 of the very best defenses UGA Bulldogs have fielded since Erk Russell which was over 3 decades ago now.

Trying to paint this football program as the Best, or Fabulous, or Better in the Coach Richt Era than LSU, Florida, Alabama, Boise State, Texas, Oklahoma, Southern California or Ohio State, is a lie.

Again, I love Coach Richt. I do NOT love his “coaching staff” and am not appeased on Offense with Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator taking over for Coach Richt play calls himself. You have to beat Final AP Poll Top 10 teams and Mike Bobo has lost every game. Coach Richt beat 3. You have to beat Final AP Poll Top 25 teams Mike Bobo is 5-6 and Coach Richt is 17-19.

You cannot lose to UNRANKED TEAMS and Mike Bobo has four (4) such Losses and Coach Richt 8.

We haven’t had a QB who valued the football since DJ Shockley graduated with Honors 2005. When we have had Running Backs, we either Redshirted the player so we got to see him only 2 years, or tried to Redshirt the Rivals # 11 RB last year until the 3rd quarter of the 5th game and then ripped his Redshirt Off, the season in a Tank and Lost.

We are not there. It is not the player’s fault although there is no doubt that Coach Richt has not recruited us any Secondary Players like every coach you mention totally had for UGA in the past. It is not Coach Richt’s fault either. It is that he has never been head coach, and now is our head coach with a staff that frankly is all out of position with no experience themselves at the position they coach, no discipline on or off the field, and with a offense when blessed with a Knowshon Moreno or a AJ Green largely has failed to get the ball even into their hands in the BIG GAMES.

You are NOT 17-19 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams plus 8 Losses UNRANKED

And, great beyond all measure on the national scene.

We are what we are.

I would like to see Coach Richt do something about an Offensive Coaching Staff. Thank you.

Al Groh is a 66 year old, old coot, who cannot identify with 18-year old nerds. He is washed up. Your Defense was a LOT WORSE than UGA’s, yet he interviewed for a coach and ends up with a guy Georgia tek can AFFORD with your # 48 attendance, having to give away 4 Coca-Colas, 2 hot dogs, 2 bags of boiled peanuts and a parking pass to sell a ticket.

It was obvious that since the day Paul Johnson FIRED JON TENUTA that he needed a Defensive Coordinator to replace him. He started interviewing one long before Coach Richt finally had to cave in to our pressure to get rid of our D.C. which then took him 4 top guys all far better than Al Groh and then to 11 year NFL career man Todd Grantham, who by the way is worth and therefore paid 3 times what Al Groh gets at Georgia tek.

8 of 9 in Coach Richt Era is assured.

30-24 while you played 6 games against teams NOT EVEN IN A BOWL GAME, yet LOST 3, and the Academics of your Football team are WAY WORSE under Paul Johnson than they are at UGA. Losers.

Really POOR SPORTS, Georgia tek fans, both of you.

Chipperdawg – I was wondering why EJ’s was not approached as well. Maybe he was and wasn’t interested – the media just never got wind of it. Who knows?

The biggest difference that I can see between Chavis and Grantham has to do with experience. Chavis is a proven DC which is why Richt went after him first. He also knows the SEC!

Grantham on the otherhand has only been a DC once for a one year period and was fired after that season.

Really can’t see how Grantham is worth the dollars we (UGA) threw his way with his very limited experience at actually heading up a defense. He will be paid more than Chavis and Smart even though both of those guys are proven commodities. Things seem pretty bad for Coach Richt when he has to overpay someone to come and be his assistant. Here’s hoping things work out!!!

DawgBite,

I agree with your observations. I think we overpaid but after the public revelation that KS was offered the same amount it would be a slap in the face of anyone who eventually took the job, in this case Grantham, to not receive the same money. There were two major problems with the search: it was far too public and we didn’t get our first 3 choices, which combined with the publicity put the whole process in a bad light. Hopefully Grantham will earn the pay he’s receiving. I know he at least deserves a chance. Of course, the same could be said of Groh. It will be interesting to see how both of these coaches perform this year. Go Dawgs!
