Three UGA players undergo surgery (updated)

Athens – For starters, a quick medical report:

Three Georgia football players have undergone surgery in the past week.

Offensive lineman Justin Anderson and fullback Fred Munzenmaier both underwent shoulder surgeries. They will be limited in spring practice but full speed by pre-season camp in August, UGA said.

Defensive end Jeremy Longo had knee surgery. He will miss all of spring practice but is expected to be fine by August, UGA said.

I’m working today on a story about how Georgia’s defensive players are dealing with their uncertain “new world” — the new 3-4 scheme, the new coaches, etc. (UPDATE: The full story is posted here.)

The players haven’t yet met the newly hired coaches -– defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive-backs coach Scott Lakatos -– but are looking forward to doing so at a defensive-team meeting on Friday.

“I think it’s a little bit of both . . .  excitement and nerves,” Abry Jones said. “Players are excited that we finally got a new coach and a new scheme. We’re also a little nervous because we’ve never run it before.”

Jones  said players have been talking among themselves “about where we could play and stuff like that” in the new scheme. “We’re just waiting to see.” Jones, who said his weight is up to 299, was a defensive tackle in the old 4-3 defense, but if given his choice in the 3-4 he said he’d prefer to play defensive end rather than nose tackle.  “I played [D-end] in high school. It wouldn’t be much of a jump,” he said.

Meanwhile, safety Bacarri Rambo is fired up about the 3-4, hoping it will result in more pressure on the opposing quarterback and thus more chances for interceptions by the defensive backs. Rambo loved Grantham’s description of his defense to the media last week as an aggressive, attacking style.

“If he said ‘aggressive,’ I’m ready to see how this season will turn out because I think that’s what we’ve been missing. Aggressive,” Rambo said.  “Just go out there and make plays.”

Rambo’s new position coach, Lakatos, was the secondary coach at Connecticut this past season. Rambo said he happened to watch UConn’s victory over South Carolina in the PapaJohn’s.com Bowl and was impressed with how the Huskies’ secondary played.

The full story will have comments from additional players as well.

I think Louie is a Six Flag cotton candy vender wishing he was big enough to ride the Scream Machine.
The Shetland ponies just excite him/her anymore.
And what in his world would make him laugh his === off?

CPJ and CAG will re-write the history books, hide and watch .
How many of these fantasy players you mutts talk about will STILL be eligible when Sept. rolls around.
Count on it.

Big Sack Dawg, grow up please. I’m 16 years old but I atleast have the ability to discuss the topics at hand. Now I know you have reasonable opinions to express regarding the status of our defense or the players that have just undergone surgery.

No kidding, 1970 Dawg! The Techies silence is golden…except for the delusional ones that won’t shut up. I mean, I am both a UGA and UF grad. Love the Dawgs. Can’t stand the Gators. But even I know when my team is somebody’s bitch. I continue to hope that trend will change, however. Especially with all of the bad news coming out of Gainesville (a town which sucks compared to Athens, btw). And I AM excited about the implementation of a new D in Athens. Honestly, anything has to be better than the D we have had. So get PUMPED UP, DAWGS!

I wish all three of the dawgs who have undergone surgery well. Hope they fully recover and can play to their potential.

That said, dawg fans still suck.

REAL FORBES, you obviously have never been to Athens.

Alabama Jack, while Dawgs fans can sometimes be obnoxious pricks they will never come close to Bamer’s fanbase. You know…like you.

From what I’ve seen of Ogletree NewnanDawg, it does appear he has the body to put on 15-20 more lbs and possibly end up at OLB. Thanks for a relevant comment by the way.

Russ’, I think AlabamaJack is a Tech fan. But that is not an accurate portrayal of Georgia fans. Most of our fan base I can not stand because it is made up of people who buy Georgia t-shirts and hats and call themselves “Dawg fans”. Many of whom are unaware of the traditions and history that make UGA a great place to attend.

Hey Josh and/or NEWNANDAWG, I heard reports that Ogletree might not be solidly committed to UGA. Any truth to that?

Also, Tech fans do not enjoy being around me when the rivalry topic reveals itself in conversation. A lot of times they don’t have any clever remarks after the facts are stated; not sure why.
