Big buyout ties Grantham to Dogs

Georgia obviously doesn’t want to be looking for a new defensive coordinator again anytime soon.

UGA’s three-year, $750,000-per-year deal with newly hired Todd Grantham would make it expensive for him to leave for anything other than a head-coaching job.

According to a memorandum of understanding signed by Grantham and UGA officials —  a copy of which was obtained Tuesday by the AJC under the state’s Open Records Act — Grantham would owe Georgia more than $1 million if he were to resign within the next year for any reason other than to become an NFL or NCAA Division I head coach.

While he would be allowed to leave without penalty for such a head-coaching job, he would owe Georgia 75 percent of the amount remaining on his contract if he were to leave before Feb. 1, 2011, for any other reason, such as to take another coordinator job.

For example, if he were to resign in January 2011, he’d owe Georgia 75 percent of the approximately $1.5 million that would remain on his contract at that point – or approximately $1.125 million.

His buyout would decrease sharply later in the term of the contract.

If Grantham were to resign between Feb. 1, 2011, and Feb. 1, 2012, he’d owe UGA 20 percent of the amount remaining on the contract. If he were to quit after Feb. 1, 2012, he would owe UGA 15 percent of the remaining amount.

Other details in the memorandum:

–  If Grantham is fired without cause by UGA, he would be paid all remaining base salary ($300,000 per year) and supplemental income ($450,000 per year) through Jan. 31, 2013.

–  Like Georgia’s other assistant football coaches, Grantham will be eligible for a series of bonuses tied to his base salary and the team’s on-field performance.  He’ll get 25 percent of his base salary if the Bulldogs win the BCS national-title game, 20 percent if they lose the BCS title game, 17 percent if they play in a  BCS bowl other than the title game, 14 percent if they play in the Capital One Bowl, 10 percent if they play in the Outback, Chick-fil-A or Cotton Bowl, or 8 percent if they play in any other bowl.  In addition, he’ll receive a bonus of 13 percent of his base salary if the Dogs win the SEC Championship Game, 6 percent if they lose the SEC title game, or 3.5 percent if they are SEC East co-champs but don’t play in the title game.  The percentages in all of those bonuses are the same as in the contracts of Georgia’s other assistant coaches.

–  He’ll be provided a car or a car allowance of $600 per month.

– He’ll receive up to $1,600 worth of clothes and shoes from Nike each year.

– He’ll be required to make  eight promotional appearances or endorsements per year with payments to be retained by the Athletic Association. In addition, he’ll be required to make six unpaid appearances  at Bulldog Club meetings or fund-raising events each year.

Georgia announced the hiring of Grantham on Friday as its new defensive coordinator. He has been an assistant coach in the NFL for the past 11 seasons, including the past two as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive-line coach and the previous three as the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator.

Grantham signed the memorandum of understanding on Thursday night. UGA President Michael Adams and athletics director Damon Evans signed it on Saturday.

In response to an open-records request for newly hired defensive-backs coach Scott Lakatos‘  contract, Georgia said no written documentation yet exists.  (Lakatos will receive $180,000 under a one-year contract, UGA said Monday.) UGA also said there are no written documents pertaining to the offer of the DC job to Kirby Smart, who declined the position three days before Grantham accepted it.

Hey Tim….. Will you raise or pose the question to CMR if they will improve on the strength and conditioning in the off season? Particularly when it was revealed by Jeff Owens diet intake through his daily tweets. I know at other programs diet is stressed and is very important in their conditioning program. There has been concerns about the conditioning program raised by fans and even former players.

Sure hope CMR will do a better job this off season in reevaluating the state of the football program than last year. Now with the new hires CMR will need to really concentrate on other areas in his program.

Improving the strength and conditioning needs to be a priority, and from what I’ve read, it seems Grantham is going to make that a priority if he’s going to run an agressive, attacking style defense which EVERY UGA fan has been screaming for during the willie martinez “aka – soft zone” era…

I believe I am correct when I say that somewhere I read Kwamee Gathers, the 6ft 6in 330lb dude who will be taking that red shirt off for 2010, was recognized as the MVP equivalant on the UGA scout /red shirt team for 09. If we need someone to plug up the middle in the new 3-4……he sounds like a pretty good candidate to me…..and I understand he is pretty quick for a big man……Anyone else recall this story? my God I hope I wasnt dreaming………….Did I just leave myself wide open for one of those trash talking grafitti types?….HEEEEELP MR. I am not one who believes UGA and GT people should hold hands and sing songs together, I believe in one week out of the year reserved for good old fashion hate. But really I would rather play and beat GT when they are undefeated……So good luck GT until we meet again…no need for foul mouth cheap shots lets see what happens on the field. As for people like……nope wont say his/her name, mabe the rest of us can have some reasonable debates/discussions and just leave………nope wont say his /her name, out of the fun altogether. Whatdayasay UGA ,GT people…..I think it is possible to discuss college football without the toilet mouth stuff…….Please respond I am curious

4.56 in the 40-yard dash at 320 lbs. with his entire family already in the NFL, is NOT slow. It is so fast, one of the Nation’s best Offensive Linemen will play D for Todd Grantham in the middle.

The more I read and hear about Grantham, the more thrilled about the hire I am. Kirby would have been a good story, but we wound up getting Saban’s first choice at DC when he put Kirby in the DC position. And I hope Grantham does such a great job he gets offers after year one.

Good post RED DOG and I tend to agree with your sentiments. Being a native Atlantan and UGA 92 grad I have many close friends and family who are both UGA and GT fans and alum. Theoretically, the better they are when we beat them the better it’s going to make us look, even if that wasn’t really the case this year it seemed. The KY loss didn’t help matters admittedly. GA DAWGS and his whole N Ga/S Ga reference just shows his narcissism and ignorance. Not to get too cheesy but part of what makes GA such a great state is its diversity in its terrain, cultures and people both north and south(although I must admit I do strongly dislike the gnats in down south). PowerDawg…you should be so lucky and it sounds like you may be catching a little bit of what you were describing in your post. Ok, back to football. This may be overblown but I would hate to think that we would be lacking in our strength and conditioning and that we may be being outworked. I am however glad that the issue has arisen and am confident that CMR will address and fix the problem if there is one. I do hope that the on the field discipline/penalties and turnovers will be addressed cause they’ve really hurt us the past few years. That being said, I honestly can think of very few other coaches I’d rather have than the one we’ve got and I hope he stays as long as he wants. Sounds like he’s made some solid defensive hires in Grantham and Lakatos. Last???
