UGA hires Grantham for $750,000 per year

(Updated 7 p.m.)

Athens –  He last coached on the college level in 1998. He’ll make more money than Georgia has ever paid an assistant coach. He’ll change the Bulldogs’ defensive alignment to a 3-4.

He is Todd Grantham, and he is the answer to the question that dogged Georgia fans for 43 days: Who would coach Mark Richt hire as defensive coordinator?

“We have our man,” Richt said Friday as he named Grantham, the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line coach, to fill the job that had been open since the Dec. 2 firing of Willie Martinez.

Grantham was known to have been on Richt’s radar for weeks, but at least three other candidates declined the job before it was offered to him. On Thursday night, Grantham accepted the same deal that Alabama defensive coordinator and former Georgia player Kirby Smart rejected three days earlier: a three-year, $750,000-per-year contract.

That salary will make Grantham the third highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football, behind only USC’s Monte Kiffin ($1.2 million plus a $300,000 bonus last season at Tennessee) and Texas’ Will Muschamp ($900,000). Georgia’s highest-paid assistants in 2009, Martinez and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, made $325,000 each, plus bonuses.

Grantham, 43, was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech and Michigan State in the 1990s but has spent the past 11 seasons in the NFL, including the past two with Dallas. His only previous experience as a coordinator was with the Cleveland Browns from 2005-07.

Grantham will begin work at Georgia when Dallas’ season ends. The Cowboys play Sunday at Minnesota in an NFL playoff game.

By phone from Dallas late Friday afternoon, Grantham took a break from preparing for the Vikings to discuss his new job and new team.

He said Georgia will switch from its traditional 4-3 base defense to the 3-4, meaning three linemen and four linebackers rather than vice versa.

“We’re going to an aggressive style 3-4,” he said.

He said two outside linebackers “are going to be coming … are going to be developed as pass rushers.” Two inside linebackers, he said, are “going to be downhill guys to the ball.”

Although the 3-4 will become the base defense, Grantham said the Dogs will use “multiple” defenses “to have the ability to match [the offense's] personnel.”

The end result, he said, will be “an aggressive, physical, attacking-style defense.”

Grantham, who has coached the defensive line for most of his career, said he’ll work instead with the linebackers at Georgia. He said that’s a good role for a coordinator because the linebackers coach spends time on the practice field with both the line and the secondary, depending on the drill.

The only holdover on Georgia’s defensive coaching staff is line coach Rodney Garner. Grantham said they have not met, but “I have heard good things about him, and I expect to be meeting him shortly.”

Two openings remain on the defensive staff — Richt fired three  coaches last month — but Grantham said no decisions have been made on who will be hired for those spots.

“Coach Richt and I will be working this weekend and next week to try to iron some of those things out,” he said.

Grantham’s hire capped an arduous process in which Richt was rejected by three highly respected defensive coordinators: Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster, LSU’s John Chavis and Smart. Richt said Grantham, whom he did not know when the search began, was recommended highly by many other coaches during the protracted process. One known to have recommended him was Foster.

After Smart turned down the job Monday, Richt turned the focus to Grantham.

“The overriding factor throughout the entire process is I was very prayerful that in the end we got the right man for the job. And that’s exactly what happened,” Richt said. “It was not something I was trying to do at breakneck speed.

“Sometimes it’s easy to just get a person who is willing to come at the drop of a hat, but when you’re looking at the quality we were looking for, such as Todd, it doesn’t always happen overnight. I’m just thankful we stayed the course and ended up where we ended up.

“I really feel like we hit the jackpot,” he added.

Richt’s six-week search for a defensive coordinator generated extraordinary interest among Georgia fans who have been concerned about the play of the Bulldogs’ defense the past two years. The Bulldogs  allowed 34 or more points in 10 of 26 games over those seasons  — a culture shock for a program once known for stout defense.

“I think … we can get the defense back to the way it has been in the past,” Grantham said.

Grantham to be Georgia DC

Georgia will hire Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator.

Grantham has been the defensive line coach of the Dallas Cowboys the past two seasons. Prior to that, he was defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns from 2005-07. Grantham also has served on NFL staffs with the Houston Texans (2002-04) and Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001). He last coached in college with Michigan State from 1996-98 under Nick Saban. Grantham was a defensive lineman at Virginia Tech.

Grantham, 43, takes over a Georgia defense that ranked seventh in the SEC during an 8-5 season. Defensive coordinator/secondary coach Willie Martinez, co-defensive coordinator/linebackers John Jancek and defensive ends coach Jon Fabris were fired.

If this is true ( caution – because Kirby had the offer, stated yes and was ready to sign before Nick Satan got involved) this would be the best hired of the 3 in question (Kirby & Will). Here is why — Kirby is a mere puppet of Satan. We all know who runs that D. Will feasts on 2nd rate talent in that league. Grantham did great while in NCAA and has a rock solid D line in Dallas. Do not even start that Cleveland crap. Cleveland sucks in all sports and especially the Browns. He has NFL ties and the recruits love that. The only thing that would make the deal better is if he shows up with a Super Bowl ring. Go Cowboys!

You should be proud Dawg Nation! You now have a DC who was FIRED from his only other DC job…That has to be a first in the SEC! :)

Not sure how good Grantham will work out at GEORGIA, but I think he will bring some fire to the Defense. He’s known for being a little ‘hot’headed, so we’ll see how he gets along w/ everyone. I will say this: While Kirby Smart may have been a sexier hire (and pissed of ALA fans) I’m still not convinced he would have made a good DC on his own, and regardless how good it would have seemed a few days ago, but I’m not so sure come the next season or two.

Once again, congrats Dawgs, but this whole process has me wondering. Why doesn’t Coach Richt have a stable of former coaches / players that he can use as a talent pool for such hires?

You hear about coaches being Carroll disciples or Brown or Saban or Beamer or even Tuberville, but not Richt. Is it because his coaching style / philosophy isn’t distinctive? Not throwing stones, just curious.

In 2008, the year with all the hype and expectations, UGA lost 18 roster players to season ending injuries–including both starting offensive tackles. And they still won 10 games! Stafford and Moreno leave early and Joe Cox just was not the trigger man the UGA needed to play at the highest level this past season. The season was disappointing since we only 8 games. And UGA has won eight games for the past 13 years straight–tops in the NCAA. So whatever your agenda is please go peddle it somewhere else.

Former Virginia head coach Al Groh will be named Georgia Tech’s next defensive coordinator, sources close to the situation said Friday. Groh, who was fired following the Cavaliers’ 3-9 season, will replace Dave Wommack, who was fired last week after two seasons under coach Paul Johnson. The Yellow Jackets allowed at least 30 points in six games but still finished the season with an 11-3 record. They lost to Iowa 24-14 in the FedEx Orange Bowl.

Groh interviewed for the defensive coordinator position with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday and was reportedly a front-runner for the position there, but he also told the Roanoke Times he has “no qualms about being an assistant coach” at the college level. That’s a position he hasn’t held since 1988, when he was offensive coordinator at South Carolina. Heather Dinich covers the ACC for ESPN.com. Love him or hate him apparently CMR does not let the “deadly” sin of pride get in the way of his football decisions and apparently he too recognizes the defensive genius of Nick Saban. When his first two choices didn’t work out he “went to the well” with Smart, Saban’s DC, and then Grantham, a previous choice to be Saban’s DC.

There is NFL talent on the UGA roster. Grantham can surely recognize that and coach it up for our current players as well as future recruits.

All you nerds on here trying your damnedest to punch holes in this hire just remember….you guys are about to be turned down by a 90 year old washed up has been…Al Groh!!!

Everyone talking about Grantham need to know their facts, he eld an all-players meeting when romero crennel was rumored to get fired. It didn’t happen and Romeo fired him because of the insubordination…. Then got fired himself. the entire Cleveland staff was replaced after the 2007 season before jets boy came over.

Reason

January 15th, 2010
9:27 am

I hope that I can provide a little reason here with all the UGA fans… If Grantham is the guy, then we all need to get behind him and give him a chance. I am so disappointed with our fans. Someone earlier mentioned that we are one of the worst fan bases in the SEC and I have to agree. So many people show up to games late, leave early, don’t cheer their hearts out when at the game… We complain so much, but we are lucky! We have one of the best 15 programs in the country (we could be borderline Top 10). I would say out of the 15 best programs, we would be Top 5 to live with our mild climate, classic college town, and proximity to Atlanta. We can recruit great talent from Georgia, plus our program is rich like very few programs are in the nation… So, if you fair-weather fans need to complain then do it constructively (ie. have a point and propose a solution with your complaint). This spreading of lies/rumors like many on the blog do is disgraceful. I wonder how many of you actually went to UGA or were raised a Bulldawg fan. You that complain without any thought are pathetic!

Ali Akbar Tech

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Florida’s new DC from the Dolphins has never been a DC in college either. Pulling a guy from the NFL was not only a good move from an X’s & O’s perspective, but also from a marketing and PR position.

FYI – Tech still doesn’t have a DC! LMAO!!! That should be good for their recruiting!

I think it is funny that people say this search looked bad for UGA when in fact they OFFICIALLY offered one other coach..Smart. After the cartoon that has happened in Knoxville this week I do not think that UGA’s issue is all that bad. To make matters worse for them, ESPN is reporting about 10 minutes ago that Cutcliffe has pulled his name out of the head caoching job.

ugaaccountant

January 15th, 2010
9:31 am

reason – any uga “fan” complaining is actually a fan of a rival school. No way anyone could be disapointed with getting rid of Willie and acquiring Grantham. This is fantastic news, and coupled with Tenn and Fl in disarray, we have an excellent chance to win the east this year.

Reason

January 15th, 2010
9:32 am

If it is true that Grantham is the new DC, then I would like to see him reach out to Manny Diaz to come here as LBs coach (I know Manny is a DC at MTU, but the lure of a SEC school may mean a lot to him), I would love to see us reach out the USF’s old DC Tersey to come in a coach DBs, and I would move Garner away from being a position coach to just being assistant HC and recruiting coordinator. I have no idea on who we bring in to be Special Teams coach, but like the idea of having just one person devoted to the position… I like the promise of running a 3-4 and think that 2011 could be special (I think we will see improvement next year, but it will take a full year to get adjusted to the scheme).

Reason: Constructive criticism is a good thing. And if you to be immune to criticism then you will find yourself facing reality on the field. The reason that UGA is a great tradition is that we do not put up with mediocrity for very long. As for loyalty, I have a key to Sanford Stadium ( and I will not divulge the details of that). Do you have one of those?

That is funny!

As to anyone worried about Grantham not having recent NCAA experience, Garner is the perfect counterbalance for that. Grantham is here for his actual coaching experience and Garner heads up the recruiting/player relations type activity.

Plus we still have 2 slots to add to the defensive coaching staff. We will build a very fine staff with Grantham in charge.

We got rid of sorry a** Willie Martinez and now we have a DC in there who hopefully will exihibit some discipline and fire. If everybody wants to go back to the days of Goff (6-6 every year) or Donnan (8-4 with no hope of ever getting better), then so be it. But we have a good coach and a good man running our program and we are one of the lucky few. Feel free to keep running off at the mouth about how sorry he is but just remember what it was like sitting in Sanford Stadium around 1994 and feeling completely lost and KNOWINg we did not have a shot in the world of getting better.

It may suprise some of you in Athens, but the talent in Athens is even less than in Cleveland. The guy may know X’s and O’s as good as anyone, but the college environment is light years different than the NFL. That adjustment is what will determine his success. When is the last time he had to sit in a living room and beg some premadonna to come play for him….I hope he turns out well for you guys, it is just comical that the perennial “this is the year” followed by “wait til next year” has started again. I mean just how long will his ’signing bonus’ money hold out? Of course he’ll have to actually go to work someplace – say as a D-line coach – and show that he can inspire and ‘coach-up’ kids…and get along with other coaches, of course. But do something. There are tons of young firebrand NCAA coaches and NFL coaches ( UGA’s TG ) and they would not work for a slob like CPJ that cannot win outside of the ACC.

“Slap em, slap em in their faces” he screamed as he drove from MIami up the Sunshine parkway, tossing his resumes out the car window. Obviously distressed over the physical WHUPPIN that Iowa and UGA put on his lil boys. It just ain’t Big Boy ball in the ACC folks.

Position coaches in the NCAA that are very, very good like BVG was at UGA are frankly, hard to find. Gorgeous women like at UGA are also hard to corral and date. It only take one BEAUTY however, to make a great football weekend in Athens. If you are smart, you call the good looking girls first and have a blast, cause it only takes o-n-e. ALL of the ugly fat girls at tech well, um they go to Tech games.

GREAT co ordinators? They too are hard to corral and when you get one you know it. UGA has a great one and we will see won’t we gang?? tech’s DC? It doesn’t matter if UGA has a big nose tackle Jay Ratliff isn’t that big and chris Canty wasn’t big either. they are just strong. Alabama ran something like a 3-4 but no team runs a 3-4 all the time because of the bubbles it creates for the running bubbles refers to having a linebacker on covering a o-linemen every defense has holes it is up to the DC to throw so many different looks at other teams like SABAN/smart it was more SABAN than smart that teams can’t guess whats coming next. the cowboys did a great job of that this year also

Well I think it’s a pretty solid hire. College football for better or worse has taken on a Pro Football /Big Business mentality. These kids( and more importantly their parents) are looking at schools that will showcase their talents for the next level. Mark Richt’s method of recruiting kids and building to them be great human beings of faith is honorable, but it isn’t resonating like it used to. And Richt’s model of treating players and coaches like they are family( ala FSU) needed to change as well. College Football is a business, and a college football program needs to be run as such. To Richt’s credit he learned his lesson( albeit a bit too late). Now UGA has a selling point to kids, especially defensive players. Athens has always been a great town with an awesome fan base. And now they have a defensive coach who has experience in the NFL( something Richt’s previous staff’s have lacked), who brings an NFL scheme to the table which will get players ready for the next level. If I were a defensive player( especially a defensive lineman since that’s Grantham’s speciality), I would strongly consider UGA whereas I wouldn’t have when Willie was there. And I think the 3-4 is a good fit for UGA’s current personel because their defense is a bit small but they have speed and are pretty decent when they blitz. That’s the biggest knock I had against Willie, he always had success when he blitzed and never did it enough!

I think Jeff/Tim are blowing smoke. I have gone to Rivals.com, ESPN, the Dallas News and the Cowboys web site. There is absolutely no mention of Grantham heading to UGA. I not saying that won’t happen, but if you Goggle Richt or Grantham the only link saying he is going to UGA goes back to Tim Tucker’s story.

But on the Cowboys web site I found this interesting article showing another Florida Gator braking a Herschel Walker record:

The Minnesota Vikings offer a similar challenge Sunday in the divisional round: speedy rookie Percy Harvin, who broke Herschel Walker’s franchise record for most combined yards in a single season (2,081).
He finished the regular season with two touchdown returns and the second-highest average in Vikings history (27.5). At receiver, he had the second-most catches (60) for 790 yards and six touchdowns

There has really never been anyone else under consideration. I give you Todd Grantham.”

I’m looking forward to working with a Bobby Bowden disciple and arguably one of the greratest coaches in America, Mark Richt. My experience as an experienced coordinator will serve me well as i get the chance to work with the fine student athletes and men of character that make up Georgia football. Ohhh, well since he was such a successful DC in the pro’s he’ll be just fine. What’s that? He was fired from his previous DC position? That’s OK — we probably didn’t have to pay much to get him. What’s that? He’ll be the third highest paid assistant in college football?!!? Hmmm — is this a done deal?!!? Too late to reconsider??? Coach Grantham much immediately get Willie and Rodney off campus and hire a new staff that he likes.

This doesn’t solve much of anything for UGA really though. Todd will have some bad days just as BVG did with CMR and Bobo involved in the offense.

Richt needs to go. That is really the only answer.

People complain about the length of this search process but when AL made it to the NC game you knew this would be a long process because they HAD to talk to Kirby. He was the perfect candidate & had UGA ties could you imagine the backlash if he hired a DC without talking to & offering Smart! In the mean time CMR talked to two top flight DC’s in Foster & Chavis whom if he hired either no one was going to say they were bad hires that we shouldn’t have waited on Kirby first before hiring them. He talked to up & comer Vic Koneing who took the IL DC job rather than waiting on the UGA job. He finds Todd Grantham who has a great defensive background, likes his fiery passion & feels like he’s a good fit for UGA. BUT first he HAS to talk to & offer Smart, 1 because he’s the perfect candidate & 2 the Dawg nation wouldn’t be accepting of off the radar guy like Grantham if he didn’t go after Smart first. Yeah, you won this year, but you know that the landscape is not the same as when you won when Chan was here. Case in point – how was Shreveport? Miami was frigid but a lot of sights to see and the Atlantic was gorgeous.

And brucemac…ummm…don’t think anyone is scared of Grantham. He may turn out just fine, but you did not exactly hire a top flight guy that everyone fears coming in. No, we find it amusing given that all you UGA fans tell us what a prime coaching destination Athens is…BWAHAHAHA!!!

IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys didn’t take long to hire Paul Pasqualoni as their new defensive line coach. It actually took a matter of minutes.

The problem with Georgia is the LACK of Players on the Defensive side of the ball. It will take 2 or 3 years of recruiting for UGA to turn around their defensive program. They will also need to look at some JUCO players until the youngster are ready to contribute.

UGA’s offense will need to score 30+ points a game to keep them in some games.

As a member of the Dawg Nation I can still objectively say that all the glowing posts here make it obvious why we are known as the most delusional fanbase in NCAA behind only Ohio State. It was a lot more fun winning in the 80’s and 90’s when the only expectation was that we would play hard each game. The more pressure you put on the team and yourselves for championships and things beyond your control, the less enjoyment for everyone when we do win.

1st – To the moron complaining about budget cuts at the university and not in the athletic association, the athletic association is a freaking gold mine. They are one of the top handful of programs in the entire country and are swimming in cash.

Why does everyone assume he’s our “4th choice”? He’s the 2nd person we made an offer to, and he was on our initial list of top candidates. It’s far more likely that the reason we didn’t sign him right away was because he isn’t available yet for recruiting. It would have been nice to have Bud Foster for recruiting purposes, but we will reap the benefit of Grantham over a longer period of time due to his higher ability level actually coaching the game. Basically, if Dallas hadn’t been making a run into the playoffs, we would have already hired him weeks ago.

I understand that being FANatical is the very essence of being a fan, but it doesn’t hurt to bring a critical perspective also. I pay more to the university through contributions, the annual fund, and my season tickets to three sports than most, so I have not only the right but also the obligation to keep a watchful (and objectively realistic) eye on UGA athletics. I support the Dawgs always, but that doesn’t mean I am blind. To the tens of thousands who buy season tickets and never went to a class there, and the millions who buy licensed logo merchandise and watch the telecasts: thank you and please continue to do so. But don’t tell me a turnip is an apple while you’re shoving it down my throat.

To UF’sBitch! Get your facts straight moron! UGA grads are far more successful than GT grads as a whole. I lived with two GT grads post college and they could not find work for 2 years due to lack of social skills. Book Smart does not equal occupational success. Also, you’d have to go to China, Japan and India to see their success rates as half the GT student body graduates and goes back to their home country.

Who cares which grads make more money, or who won the game last year or the year before that? UGA is currently the state champion and it’s up to my Jackets to improve themselves and reclaim that title next year. That being said, both schools did precisely what they needed to do: improve themselves at DC. Both schools are happy (mostly) with the hires, so what does it matter how much each of them were paid? The situations were totally different and each coach signed his DC according to his needs and abilities.

I think both schools took a step in the right direction and I look forward to the day when both of us can go into COFH undefeated (or at least highly ranked). That is the point in time when the UF, UA, USC, UT’s of the world will understand that football in Georgia is a force to be reckoned with.

We can still despise each other, but let’s hope that we both go into COFH at 11-0–isn’t that the best way to ruin a season?

Good luck to both with the hires.

At least this guy is a realist; he understands already that Richt has allowed Georgia to fall from one of the premier football powers in the SEC. Unfortunately, he has not had a chance to evaluate Florida, Alabama, and LSU. If he had, he would realize it is going to take several years, if ever with Richt at the helm to restore that status.

For everyone who thinks this is a bad hire you are STUPID and don’t know football. The man coached under or was courted by saban. Has spent years in the NFL. THe past two seasons has sat under Wade Phillips who if nothing else is a 3-4 witch. You bring the 3-4 to GA and we will hit people in the mouth every saturday in near future. If we would have gotten Kirby who I am glad we didn’t Saban had Grantham on speed dial. So we didn’t get the beloved son of GA but got a Hell of lot more. An what coordinator out there could have helped the Browns they were basically and expantion team just coming back in to the league and still have not recovered all though they now have talent and may get better soon. To the ones complaining about how much the bulldogs pay coaches do you know that the athletic association could collect as much as $82 million, most of it from football, estimated UGA Athletic Director Damon Evans. With projected operating expenses of about $64 million, that’s a 25 percent profit margin – though officials with the nonprofit athletic association prefer to call it “operating income.”

Yep, GaGator, thats a good point. An NFL D line coach usually makes less than a 3rd of what they’re paying this guy. Looks like spray tan Richt and Damon Evans got taken to the woodshed when negotiating with this guy. I’m not sure I understand where he had leverage? I think its more about the embarrassment of the job search and UGA trying to avoid another rejection. Coach Richt, “Todd, just tell us what the number needs to be. gdawginkalamazoo- “can’t come back and say well we will offer you 400K” WHY NOT? Sure you can. Its all about W2’s, credentials, and demand. First of all, Kirby was likely making more than Grantham at around $400K. And thats before the National Championship so he is likely to see that $400K almost double if he stays at AL. Not sure they matched Georgia’s offer since they didn’t have to, but I bet they came close. And Kirby is a D Coordinator for the best team in college football. Grantham is a D line coach for the Cowboys where Wade Phillips has seemingly avoided having his fat a– fired this year. Despite the Cowboys recent resurgence, Grantham would be facing down the barrel of Jerry Jones’ 357 magnum every year if things go south for any reason. Smart has stability at Alabama and Grantham has anything but in Dallas.

In the business world, you pay people what they’re worth which is dictated by what they’ve made in years past and what they’re worth. I’m not saying its a bad hire but I am surprised it took that much money to get him.

Who really cares what Grantham made or will make. He is worth it. In addition to learning what he knew before going to Dallas, he learned a thing or two from Ryan, who is a fine D-man himself. Look at what the Dallas D has done the past few weeks. We’ll see how it fares against Favre’s Vikings on Sunday (I’m sure I’m not alone on wanting to see that game).

Everyone thought that Bud Foster would have been great. Well, Bud Foster told Richt to hire Grantham. CMR tried for the fan fav Kirby Smart… and ponied up to get him. “Anybody but Little Kirby Smart will be great”

“Ditto on the Kirby.

Either ya’ll are in the minority or you are angry I don’t know, but it was pretty obvious the past few weeks that a lot of Dawg fans wanted Kirby really bad and were extremely dissapointed that he stayed at Bama.

Was Saban sending a message to Smart?

5:16 pm January 8, 2010, by Tim Tucker

Just listened to audio of Nick Saban’s final press conference in Pasadena today before he and the national champions flew back to Alabama.

Thought you’d be interested in Saban’s comments pertaining to assistant coaches making lateral career moves.

You could certainly interpret the remarks as pointed advice to Kirby Smart that he shouldn’t leave the defensive-coordinator job at Alabama for the same job at Georgia.

Said Saban:

“I’m always happy and interested for our coaches to be able to advance professionally, especially if it is a professional advancement in terms of a guy being a coordinator who can go be a head coach in a situation where he has a chance to be successful. . . .

“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank. You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make and really aren’t in your best interests for a career standpoint. So I’m not happy when guys do that. But anybody on our staff who can move up, we would like to help them do that.”

WTF – Dude… that’s your opinion. Who is to say what a coach is worth? If this DC does the job, he’ll be worth it, if not more. Look around you and notice where salaries are going. I’m glad UGA was in the financial position to afford this guy… he’s a proven winner.

All I’m saying is, to CMR (who probably wanted CTG anyway), let’s get this done and let him do his thing while recruiting coaches do their thing this week, and we’ll all see how it turns out this Fall.

Hey PUPPY DOGS, here are his comments…………….See above. Hope you all got a copy of the Sports Illustrated issue on BAMA at your local newstand. I will frame it along side the 2008 Issue showing Georgia as presason NO.1………………….What a JOKE !!!!!!!!

From Dallas, where the Cowboys are preparing for Sunday’s playoff game at Minnesota, Grantham said in a statement: “I am very excited about being part of a staff that will work tremendously hard to return Georgia football to one of the premier teams in the SEC

I was excited at the idea of Kirby, but that was after it was made out to be a done deal………….I didn’t expect him to make the lateral move. But now with some of the things I’m hearing about Grantham, the more I think this should have been the first choice to start with. The talent he has coached could be huge in recruiting. And so he didn’t last as DC in the NFL but this is college, He has had pro experience which should make coaching college easier imo. I am excited about the hire. And am more excited about the fact that UGA is willing to spend the $ to get back to top. A lot of my UGA freinds said they wouldn’t. Go Dawgs!!!!!!!!!

It’s sad that when I get on these blogs I see just as many haters (FLA, Tenn, GT fans) on here as UGA fans.

As for the Dooley going to Tenn. I’m happy for him but it will be weird having to pull against him. It’s a love/hate thing, I wish him well but not enough to beat us. At least that a**hole Kiffin is gone. I have nothing really against UT but Kiffin was quickly giving me reasons to hate.

With a weak ACC schedule, that’s very possible and then you guys can have fun watching yet another coach run as fast as he can to another school. I mean, think about it. By Thursday’s practice, it was clear to Jerry Jones that defensive line coach Todd Grantham would leave after the season to become defensive coordinator at the University of Georgia. I think he will turn us around and we will be back to contending for the SEC title and even for a NC within the next couple of years. I agree with CMR, that it’s a great hire. He’ll bring an aggressive attitude to the D. From reading the dallasmorningnewsdotcom I gather that he’s highly regarded in Cowboys country. Here’s just one comment:

“….Nose tackle Jay Ratliff has been named to the Pro Bowl team the last two seasons and was an All-Pro pick this season. Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher and Marcus Spears have all improved under Grantham’s watch, and Igor Olshansky had a career-high 76 tackles, according to the coaches film, in his first year with the team.

“He can really dissect the offenses,” Bowen said earlier in the week. “He really shows you how to do your job but it’s not like you have to play like a robot where you have to do this and have to do that. He brings a lot of confidence to the group…”

It was so much better on here when you had to pay to get on these blogs. Please bring that back as that will eliminate the 16 yr olds with access to mom’s computer

Why don’t all of you non-UGA fans get the hell off of this blog and worry about your own back yard. TG was a steal at $750K, and the results will prove me right. UGA is a great program and Richt is a great coach, a coach that brought stability to a program that was reeling for the better part of 15 years, due to Jan Kemp. Bottom line, UGA will be the “Beast from the East” very soon. I want to give a huge shout out to Kirby Smart for turning us down, because we got a lot more value in Grantham. I wish Kirby the best, but in my opinion, he can’t carry TG’s jock strap. Go DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CMR,

I want to thank you for taking your time and making a great choice for DC. I know that on the surface people may seem to think that you did not get your first choice, but I am very impressed with TG’s resume. Also, he has worked for and with some great defensive minds. So, thank you for managing this team effectively, and thank you for making those very tough decisions (letting coaches go). Lastly, I have witnessed first hand, Mike Bobo’s progression as an offensive coordinator. No, he has not been perfect, but he has been more than adequate. I just hope that Bobo hangs with us. Let me suggest that if UGA’s offense has a great year in 2010 that you pay Bobo Grantham type money. I like the fact that you have developed this guy, and I really like his sense of urgency and his approach at doing his job. CMR, I will keep you in my prayers, and I have always and will continue to be a huge supporter of yours and the Dawgs.

Hey recruits, come on up to Athens. It is the most beautiful campus in the nation and you will get to play for some of the best men in the business, while earning a fantastic education.

Sincerely,
Gdawg

Come on people! The last time I checked this was a free market economy(until Obama get’s his hands in it). Don’t be jealous of what people make, everyone on here has the same opportunity. All of this speculation about who got the best hire is pure conjecture at this point. Be dam happy about who your team signed, get behind them, and hope your season improves next year. After reading some of the comments on here, half of you are either AD’s, HC’s, DC’s or played in college and the NFL……I’m guessing NOT and you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. So how bout you just STFU with all of your “impressing” knowledge of the game of football and let these people run the dam show. Once again AJC…..please bring back the pay blogs………..we used to have a lot of fun in those days.

[...] • Georgia on their minds. At least somebody in the South is getting their man: Georgia Tech is prepared to bring on ex-Virginia coach Al Groh as its defensive coordinator, which could portend a shift to the 3-4 in Atlanta; and Georgia, after striking out on bigger names Bud Foster and Kirby Smart, has reportedly landed Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham as its new defensive coordinator — an expensive one, at that — replacing the much-maligned Willie Martinez.
