Grantham: Dogs will go to 3-4 defense; he’ll coach linebackers

A few  notes from new UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s just-completed conference call with the media:

– Georgia’s base defense will switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 — three linemen and four linebackers, rather than vice versa.

“We’ll be a 3-4 structure,” Grantham said, “which basically means in your base defense you have two outside ‘backers, three D linemen, two inside ‘backers.  . . . We are more  of an aggressive style 3-4. We’re going to attack  blockers up front, and we’re going to rush the passer. Our outside ‘backers are going  to be what we call edge-setters. They’re going to be aggressive; they’re going to be coming;  they’re going to be solid [against] the run but we’re  going to develop  those guys as pass rushers. The inside ‘backers … they’re going to be downhill guys to the ball.

“But in saying that, we’re still going to be multiple. We’re always going to. . . have the ability to match personnel. . . . The other thing is,  when you coach in pro football, you take the players you have and you find a way to make it work. So I  really believe the best way to go about it is, you rank your players 1 through 50 and you find a way to get your top players on the field. ”

– Although he has coached  defensive line for most of his career, he said he’ll work with the linebackers at Georgia. He thinks that’s the best role for a coordinator.

“As coordinator, you’re tied in to not only the front but the secondary,” he said, “so I will be working with the linebackers and that way you can be with both the front and the back relative to whatever drills you are doing.”

– He doesn’t know the only holdover on Georgia’s defensive staff, line coach Rodney Garner. “I have heard good things about him, and I expect to be meeting him here shortly.”

Two openings remain on the defensive staff, and Mark Richt has said the new coordinator  will have much input into filling them. Grantham said no decisions have been made. He said his hiring came together quickly and that he and Richt would discuss other positions over the weekend and next week.

– He will remain with the Cowboys as long as they are alive in the NFL playoffs. “I’ve always been a believer that you finish what you start,” he said.

– He and Richt  didn’t know one another when Georgia’s search for a DC began. Richt said he got to know Grantham as the process unfolded.  “I really feel like we hit the jackpot,” Richt said.

This is a great hire from a great head coach. I am proud of the way Mark Richt has handled this search and hire and shame to the doubters & bashers. Get on the bandwagon and support Mark Richt & Todd Grantham. We should all be proud to have an honest, respectable, trustworthy head coach. Look around college football. Greed & deceit abound. Yes I’d like Georgia to win a National Championship, but even if we don’t we should win 8-10 games every year and that consistency without cheating will speak volumes for itself. Thanks Mark Richt. Welcome Todd Grantham. Good luck. Go Dogs!

The 3-4 will allow for the defense to be more aggressive and it is an easier way to rush “four” without the offense knowing exactly who the rusher is and where he is coming from. Should get interesting. Go Dawgs!

I am from Bainbridge, Ga. and saw Kirby play high school ball. He was a fine young man then as he is now. However, I belive coach Richt got the right man to turn things around!! I also did high school football radio for Magic 107 in Thomasville, Ga. when Mike Bobo was the quarterback. He can and will do a much better job this year. I agree this is a good hire. My only thought is for the Dawg fans that trashed the 3-4 as a college defense when Al Groh’s name was linked to GT. If those Dawg fans are correct, Richt is a real dummy. If Richt is correct, then those Dawg fans are real dummies.

Guess I just became a Cowboys fan for this year. Some advice to Jerry Jones: heard on the news you have artificial grass in a billion dollar stadium because you can’t grow grass inside. Some ole boys from California can show you how to grow all the grass you can use inside. I read somewhere some time back that tracks can be laid that exits a dome and you can send the field out for a little sunshine and roll it back in. You would think that someone could rebuild a new field after every game using sod. Where did the billion go, to the scoreboard? Cheez!

Yes, we’ll need a huge nosetackle in the middle, but I think we’ve got the personnel to make it work. The Geathers kid is enormous and it’s being said that he was really scrappy in practice. Don’t forget about Deangelo Tyson, Abry Jones, Derrick Lott, etc. We’ve got some big boys waiting in the wings. We’re also recruiting the big Whitaker kid out of Warner Robbins. He’d be perfect for this system. I talked to some of the Grayson HS football players and they said that he was by far the best lineman they played this year.

The 3-4 makes all kind of sense in a speed conference. Plus LBs rushing the QB from the edge is absolutely necessary against these spread offenses. This should translate into a much more aggressive defensive philosophy than poor old Willie had. Of course, only performance on the field will ultimate tell how all this that sounds so good actually works.

Alright! Next business is to get Sonny’s line bred into a longevity line and prance Uga VIII onto the field. I’ll never forget during a game it was announced at halftime that Uga I had died and had been buried in the east bank behind the goal posts during the week. We were asked for a moment of silence for his passing at the end of which a chant began in the student section(where We were sitting) of”DAMN GOOD DOG!, DAMN GOOD DOG!, DAMN GOOD DOG!”. As we reached a crescendo, the team burst thru a sign between the west end goal posts with a 4-5 mo old Bulldog (Uga II) pulling at a long leash with a cheerleader hardly able to keep up. That pup ran dead center of the field at full speed and didn’t stop until he hit the 50 yard line where he jumped up and down with the spirit that he symbolized! The stadium went nuts!! The team finished the day by kicking Auburn’s (I think) butt. What I wouldn’t give to see that again! And hear the roar!!

The 3-4 is really tough for opposing teams, but you have to have the right personnel. I’ve played against it In college and because it’s a two gap defense your 3 dline guys have to be BIG guys and outside backers have to be big physical guys who can pass drop. I hated the short passing game against it because there aren’t big windows to throw it. I like the new DC and his aggressive style and think the defense will have success next year but will be great in another year or two with the right type of backers that they will bring in. I think this is a great hire and am excited about uga’s future! Good job richt

Derek Dooley, walk-on Academic All-ACC receiver at Virginia, UGA Law Degree, becomes famous overnight at $2.4 million dollars a year for 5 years.

Nick Saban Disciple both at LSU and the Miami Dolphins, he left the NFL to be head coach and then also Athletics Director at Louisiana State of the WAC.

He doesn’t or hasn’t thrown the football, which doesn’t surprise any UGA fans.

$12,000,000

That’s more than Vincent J. Dooley ever made by a long wide margin.

In Stark contrast to the impetuous aggressive arrogant presumptuous Lame Kitten hired by Mike Hamilton, Derek Dooley is smart, conservative, and very rich.

I know, he had 2 losing seasons sandwich his one good year the year before last at Louisiana Tech, but here is the common thread of Mike Hamilton’s 2 most recent hires as coach : Dooley lost many close ballgames. Moral Victories. Here, he will fit in well with the vols, whose hatred for everything Bulldog finds them reaching into the WAC to steal their head coach to come coach for the vols.

Running the football makes your Defensive Stats look better.

I expect Derek Dooley to bring some respect back to the vols long-suffering football program both in the classrooms and off Cumberland Boulevard.

Win and losses ?

That hasn’t been a priority for the vols in a long time, now.

Strengths :

(1)Classroom, Coach Dooley is a smart young man.

(2)off Cumberland Boulevard, Coach Dooley is a conservative who will not put up with that stuff any more.

(3)Respectability by saying the right statements instead of every wrong statement by every vols’ head football coach ever, in the past, this also will be a huge improvement finally for the former Hillbillies of college football.

(4)Wins and Losses might well follow, and if they don’t Coach Dooley got Vince and Barbara twelve million dollars for taking care of them in their old age, with a huge helping hand by his mentor Nick Saban of Alabama, and it does seem that Nick Saban’s Disciples actually all are extremely good at Coaching.

I know y’all expect me to criticize this choice, but I do not, I actually like it.

Coach Dooley, this is a refreshing change, finally for the vols.

It’s going to be great having a conservative, smart, student of the game, with a pedigree in coaching second to none in whom he has studied under, to the North finally, for a change. I never in my lifetime thought that any of Coach Dooley’s values were of any importance to anyone with the vols, ever.

I applaud this choice. I doubt it will change anything with the vols but if he stays there 5 years, that would be great wouldn’t it ? Just imagine, no more laughing at the vols’ head coaches’ stupid hillbillies idiotic wild crap.

It changes the entire outlook of the vols, instantly. Now, if the vols’ fans can change to his type of good person…

…wait, that is asking too much. Who knows, some truly good guys may finally even play on the football teams for the vols one day. I will hold my breath on that one too, and hope beyond hope that we see Coach Dooley’s values rub off on the worst bad boys of All-Time ever in the nation.

And, a national abomination of a football program for some time now.

Good Luck vols, but I have got to share with you that Coach Dooley doesn’t fit in with the rest of you Hillbillies, you yahoos.

Nick:

It would help if you knew something about football before you started to castigate the 3-4 defense Grantham will install at UGA. For one, the 3-4 defense GA ran in the 90s was a 2 gap defense under Marion Campbell…. a read and react defense that required DL to cover 2 gaps on every play. The 3-4 defense which Grantham will install at GA is a 1 gap defense which allows for aggressive play as linemen are lined up in the gaps and penetrate those gaps while they read on the run. The Dallas Cowboys are doing quite well running the 1 gap 3-4 this year…. I’ll let you look up where Dallas stands in the NFL this year for points allowed by their defense. And I couldn’t care less what they’re doing in the NFL right now. It’s different from college ball.

And yeah, SoCal Dawg, my reason is the entire decade of the 1990’s. Ray Goff and Wayne McDuffie could flat out put up some points and did. Trouble was, their defenses could not stop anyone. Sound familiar?

I’m all for the aggression. It’s all I’ve been screaming for and one reason I wanted a good look at Diaz but I just think the 3-4 ain’t where it’s at. Plus, how many teams are we playing that run the spread anyway? Maybe 2. We’ll see what happens.

GAy Tech chose Al Groh for DC? Is that true? That guy couldn’t coach a little league team. CF has passed him by. He’s a fine fellow but has all the personality and coaching talent of a three day old biscuit. Before he was fired at UVA his players complained about his aloofness and seeming disinterest. One player said after he was terminated from his alma mater:
“I want a coach that’s going to be just a really personable, relatable guy. I love coach Groh. I really appreciate what he did for me, giving me an opportunity to play in orange and blue. I’m forever in debt to him for that, but I would really like to have a coach that really is just a family man — a coach that really has a tight relationship with his players.”

On second thought, he may fit in with the dweebs at the North Ave. Trade School.

by Nick January 15th, 2010 11:49 pm

“And I couldn’t care less what they’re doing in the NFL right now. It’s different from college ball.”

END QUOTE

What is the difference between college ball and The NFL ?

UGA Bulldogs have sent 4 dozen to NFL rosters this season. In fact, other than Otis Sistrunk (Mars), I can’t recall NFL players that did not play college football.

The fact is that The NFL requires that their class at least, has played 3 seasons before they can jump to the NFL. Ask Herschel Walker.

The basic premise that college ball is different from The NFL is under question, therefore.

The Innovations that a coaching staff of $20 million dollars a year in The NFL have and continue to add to the game of college ball, is astounding.

The ability to take one look at the talent in a college ball’s program and determine just who in the hell of them might end up one day in the NFL, is another area where having NFL Coaching Experience in a college ball program, will be invaluable. Do we need to discuss that half-way through Game 5, we RIPPED THE REDSHIRT off WASHAUN EALEY. Over the next 9 games, Washaun Ealey was handed the football on the average 13 times. We threw the football to him 3 times all season long.

We were not ready to play Washaun Ealey, yet in the Spring, I said we had to in game 1. Game 2, I said the same. Game 3 I said the same. Game 4, I said what are we going to do now, rip the redshirt off ? Game 5, I picked on them not having played Washaun Ealey, that the season is lost with the players we have at Running Back, and that despite the fact we have 2 Fullbacks who will go on the NFL, that we do NOT hand the football to them to run the ball, either. Idiotic glaring errors by the “coaching staff” who could not see Washaun Ealey is our only hope at TB. We let Washaun Ealey have the football 20 time against Georgia Tech, and he runs for 183 yards.

God Almighty, is all I can say. Do I have to say, I told you so that we screwed up on Washaun Ealey ?

The RB coach is a wide receiver whose DAD was a great TB for us. He doesn’t listen to or didn’t ask for his dad’s input. No coach on the staff can figure it out that Washaun Ealey had to play Caleb King and Richard Samuel cannot hold on to the football. Carlton Thomas is thrown to the wolves and he too, we have no coach who can teach him either how to hold a football while running. At UGA, blocking is more important than teaching them basic skills of their position. Carlton Thomas we handed the football to 22 times for 100 yards and he caught 6 passes. Richard Samuel, we didn’t even play the last 2 games. Richard Samuel lost the GA tek game for us the previous year fumbling the damn football at the bloody hell goal line. God Almighty. Richard Samuel was our STARTER at Tailback. He LOST the game against Oklahoma State for us, for example – just as he did GA tek in the last game of the regular season to ruin our season the year before. He scored 2 Touchdowns all season long. He was NEVER going to be our Starting Tailback. But, he was. He did NOTHING. When the “coaching staff” finally figured out Richard Samuel would NEVER BE our Tailback, they took him from STARTER to 4 carries, if he was lucky and like I say, didn’t even play him the last 2 games at all.

Caleb King. We played Caleb King all last season. So, we knew what we had or DIDN’T with Caleb King, right ? The coaching staff didn’t, so again this season they put him BACK out there, and NOT WASHAUN EALEY.

Caleb King, you recall, FUMBLES, cannot catch passes, whiffs on blocking assignments, and is a big ZERO at TB. He had 1 TD all season long, and he too is AHEAD of Washaun Ealey. For what ?

Caleb King had caught a grand total of 4 catches for a grand total of 10 yards, total. He had 1 touchdown all season long the year before on 61 rushes.

He was HORRIBLE.

Caleb King is our go-to Tailback. That’s what we did. We sat down in case you forgot Richard Samuel and said we SCREWED UP. And, our plan ?

Send Caleb Freaking King in to replace him as the starter.

That worked out great.

Right ?

Against LSU, Caleb King had 8 rushes for 7 yards.

Why did we lose to LSU other than the Officials ?

Caleb King.

So, against the vols, next, Caleb King doesn’t have a single carry. Excuse me. I thought we sat Richard Samuel down ?

Caleb King gets 19 yards rushing against Florida. Nice. No wonder we LOST EVERY ONE OF THESE GAMES.

WE FUMBLED THE FOOTBALL 23 TIMES THIS SEASON.

Duh.

We had 3 TURNOVERS against Oklahoma State. They had none.
We had 3 TURNOVERS against the vols. They had one.
We had 4 TURNOVERS against the crocodiles. They had none.
We had 4 TURNOVERS against Kentucky. They had none.
Why did we LOSE all these and won last 2 games ? TURNOVERS.

A whole host of Tailbacks, none of which could hold on the football. Can’t teach them how and don’t recognize a tailback when we have one. Knowshon Moreno played here 2 years. That’s because we REDSHIRTED KNOWSHON MORENO.

Caleb King this year had 2 fumbles and lost them BOTH.

Washaun Ealey in more carries had 1.

Carlton Thomas had 1 on his few carries and it really cost in Oklahoma State loss.

Richard Samuel had another fumble this year, and it COST him the Starting Job when he lost it. He never played after that.

Richard Samuel not only had the fumble against GA tek that COST US THAT GAME at our own DAMN GOAL LINE, but Richard Samuel had had TWO (2) FUMBLES the year before. It was obvious he had fumble issues, just as it was that Matthew Stafford had 5 fumbles his last year with us and 20 in 3 years.

Of course, Joe Cox had 4 fumbles and it was supremely costly when he lost the fumble against Oklahoma State right out of the shoot a DAMN LOSS.

Look, our Offense TOTALLY SUCKS.

In stark contrast to THIS, Geno Atkins and little walk-on Rennie Curran both recovered 1 fumble each for the grand total of fumble recoveries by all 125 UGA Bulldogs this season; and we didn’t even offer Rennie Curran a Scholarship. He had to walk-on. I am telling you we do Not EVALUATE TALENT like an NFL Coach would, looking at them with 11 years NFL Coaching Experience. And, they also know how to tell the Running Backs how to hold the football so their defense won’t be able to take it away from them. And, how to tell the receivers to too while we are on the topic.

DO YOU THINK DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR GRANTHAM WILL TELL THEM TO PLAY WASHAUN EALEY THAT HE IS GOOD AGAINST HIS DEFENSE ?

DUH.

Look, our Offense TOTALLY SUCKS.

The difference between college ball and The NFL, is that in The NFL is quite obvious if you have the talent to play or not, while OUR COLLEGE BALL COACHES have no clue if you are ANY GOOD OR NOT.

Tech (who has to play UNC in CH) is gonna need a good DC. Have you seen Rivals list of top returning defensive players? I’ve never seen so many highly rated defensive players on one team.

No. 1 DE: Robert Quinn, UNC
NO. 1 DT: Marvin Austin, UNC
NO. 2 Inside Backer: Quan Sturdivant, UNC
No. 1 Outside Backer: Bruce Carter, UNC
No. 1 Free Safety: Deuanta Williams, UNC

GAy Tekkers are gonna love Al Groh,65, the UVA coach just fired, 85-93 NCAA record, 3-9 for 2009 in A Sis see. Player had complained about him to University officials and here’s what one Cavalier stated after Coach’s termination from his Alma Mater:

“I want a coach that’s going to be just a really personable, relatable guy. I love coach Groh. . . . but I would really like to have a coach that really is just a family man — a coach that really has a tight relationship with his players.”

He couldn’t recruit a can of salmon with a $5 bill. He quickly added in one interview, I have the same energy I had 30 years ago. RIGHT. He’s been drinking CPJ’s snake oil. I am so excited for GAy Tekkers. They gonna love this guy. Couple him with CPJ’s exciting personality and you got some real party dynamics.

Bo, I’m not ignoring your post (like those who want to look to rivals when UGa recruits highly regarded by Rivals, but not when they ratings don’t favor UGa.). That looks like potentially the best defense in football next year. The teams that play UNC certainly will not be able to ignore the facts! If they have a better offense next year, and they should, UNC will be a team to deal with on the national level.
So, haters, go back to talking about UNC’s HS stadium (which Sporting News hailed as the best place in America to view a game), and UNC being a BB school, but the facts are the facts, and flames are just that, flames.

Hey BuLLdawg, thanks for the touching tribute. Brung tears to my eyes! But I digress…

First off, I didn’t make the Al Groh comments on here. Like the NFL, I couldn’t care less about him either!

I have a copy cat. I’m without words today. How flattering.

And no, I hate GT. It was me that came up with the Techerhead moniker for those tools. I guess I gotta find another signing name for myself.

Frankly, I don’t care what type of D they run as long as it WORKS. I just hope I’m wrong about it. I still stand with what I say about it. I don’t like it. If he instills it, and it works, I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong. And I am a Dawg first and foremost, so I hope for all our sakes, that I am. But ain’t gonna hold my breath and ain’t gonna like it until I see continuous positive results. And so, the waiting ame begins…

The buck stops with Mark Richt on offense, The O needs to have more misdirection, i seen the reverse run to Brandon Smith once and it worked pretty well. I like the I formation pound the rock play action pass style but…… You have to keep the defense on their heels by mixing in a lil spread with misdirection…. maybe with alot more 3 and outs from Granthams D we will get to run and try more things on offense…..Bobo needs to cancel his vacations and go study other offenses…just like plays in the NFL when they go to working everyteam starts running them….like this year the hot play that everyone started running including Malarkey was the fake screen to the flat and draw with the RB to the opposite side, Stuff like that is not brain surgery, Just copy from another team and paste to yours………GO DAWGS…

Nick……I will bet you a bucket of tears Granthams 3-4 works….REASON: The last two classes ,one already here one coming in is loaded with tall agressive D ends. I asume the reason for all these D ends was SEC speed and the need to control the corners. The thought was some would beef up and play a down line position, the others …the faster ones would stay at the End position. With the 3-4 you will not have to beef up as many and cnvert them to D tackles. Now you have the luxury of coaching up a kid who is 6ft4in 250lb converting him to a LB position. Mobility, speed and agressive schemes, in MHO is certainly the answer to the problems we have had over the last several years. Just my opinion…..you are entitled to your….but I bet I am right !

Remember that year after year GT does more with its recruits and talent pool than UGA, which comes in each season with a highly ranked and highly touted recruiting class and flatters to deceive. An interesting comparison would be to see how UGA finishes each year vs. how their incoming class was ranked, and over time you will see that UGA seriously underperforms.
It is also interesting to note how little fans outside GA care about UGA. Their attention is rightly focused on Florida, Alabama, LSU and GT (yes, GT since we have much higher national recognition as a university than UGA) when it comes to southern schools
