All indications continued to point Wednesday toward Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Todd Grantham as Mark Richt’s latest target for Georgia’s defensive-coordinator job.
What remained uncertain is whether Grantham would accept the job, and when he would feel free to do so.
As I mentioned a couple of days ago, Georgia keeps running into complications in its search. The complication with Grantham -– beyond his decision about whether to return to college football after 11 years of building a strong reputation as an NFL assistant – is that his current team is still playing. Would the Cowboys tolerate a potentially distracting announcement –- or even potentially distracting negotiations –- as they prepare for Sunday’s playoff game at Minnesota?
Grantham hasn’t commented publicly on the Georgia job. Georgia also had no comment Wednesday, reiterating Richt’s refrain that he won’t comment until he has his guy.
But it does appear that Georgia has zeroed in one another strong candidate, this time one whose resume indicates a willingness to change jobs.
Grantham, 43, started his coaching career under Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech and then coached under Nick Saban at Michigan State. Since 1999, Grantham has coached for four NFL teams –- the Colts, Texans, Browns (as defensive coordinator from 2005-07) and Cowboys (as defensive-line coach the past two seasons).
Saban tried to hire Grantham as the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator when Grantham took the Browns job instead in 2005. He was mentioned as a potential head coach in Cleveland in 2006, then fired as defensive coordinator a year later. Such is life in the NFL.
Grantham has one known tie to Georgia -– a vacation home on Lake Oconee.
If you missed it, here’s a blog from yesterday afternoon on Mark Fox, the king of tweeting in the SEC.

As far as Grantham, I would be extremely pleased with the hire, and I hope it gets done and we get an announcement within the next 48 hours.

Not sold on Grantham at all…during his 3 seasons as DC for the Browns, he had one of the worst rated defenses in the NFL.

The guy has a very impressive resume. Would have been Alabama’s new DC had Kirby Smart come to Georgia. Saban tried to hire him as DC while he was at Miami, too.

I am not sold on Grantham……But then again, I am not….not sold on Grantham. The armchair QBs I have been reading on these blogs from the very first day CMR has begun his DC search make my butt burn ! Come on people CMR is one of the top five best and brightest head coaches in the dadgum country! give the man a break ! We have a great 2010 class coming in not to mention all the studs we have that will be back……Now I agree… coaching em up is the key..along with chemistry, hard work, a good bounce of the ball here and there , and mabe a ref with eyes, but hell lots of coaches have failed in college and did great in the NFL . and some have looked weak in the NFL and done beautifully in college….So who the hell knows best ? CMR is head coach of the GEORGIA BULLDOGS…I think I will trust his judgement, I think he is better qualified than me…I am just ready for spring practice to start, cause when it does …..we will be that much closer to the 2010 season to begin.

Anyone mentioned in these conversations are better than Willie Martinez…Grantham’s defenses’ have improved everywhere he has been…I would be all for this hire…His resume looks a hell of a lot better than Willie Martinez…Central Mich/Western Michigan/Miami assistant coach…How the hell was HE ever qualified to be DC? He sucks…Grantham’s resume is way more impressive than Kirby Smart’s ever will be….This guy is a proven coach…At least Richt is not hiring a former college Roommate again…

This DC recuiting for UGA reminds me of the expression: cutting a dog’s (or Dawg’s) tail off 1 inch at the time. Why not treat this like recuiting for players, send out 25 offers and accept the 1st one that responses. On second thought, all 25 might turn down the offer.

This search can be looked at in hindsight as being a disaster.
You can say that no one was going to make a lateral move. If that is the case, the following should have never been considered:
Muschamp
Smart
Chavis
Foster
Richt’s greatest success came with a up and coming hungry guy who was sort of an SOB-Van Gorder.
A case can be made that we should have gone after someone like that from day one.

It is obvious, that the theory of defense at UGA is going to change. CMR seems to be going not only for a change of DC etc, but for a change of defense. VT, LSU, and Bama, do not run traditonal college defenses. Niether does the Cowboys. Look for a change in the style of defense also. The other available coordinators seem to run the traditional style defenses, and to stop the teams that we need to stop now, we can’t do the same thing over and over again, and expect different results.

I do want Favre to win anyway, and hate Dallas, but Grantham being free becomes the number 1 reason to cheer against Dallas this weekend. Nonetheless, if the rumors about Brian Van Gorder again being interested are true, that my friends is where my recruiting would be fully dedicated to. Yeah, there are risks bringing back the same guy, but I’m sure there are hundreds of players that recall a horribly unpleasant experience playing the Dawgs when he was in charge. UGA had the hardest hitting, action-packed defense in college football. Stats prove it but aren’t needed – the Dawgs were on the verge of a national championship with only average offensive stats because the defense was so dominant.

I’m tired of UGA waiting to try and hire one of these top named coaches for a defensive coordinator. One guy that has an excellent track record running a defense is Ray Priore. He has been DC at Penn for 10+ years. He may not have the resume some of the FBS or NFL coaches do, but he can certainly coach a defense. I would be happy with him if we can’t get Grantham. We have the talent we just need a guy that wants to coach it.

I’m not worried at all about the search. Richt said it’d probably be near mid-January (or longer), and when that turns out to be true, Schultz and Bradley freak out.
Richt will get the man he needs. I don’t agree with some people that saying re-hiring Van Gorder wouldn’t work. After Tennessee fired Randy Sanders as their OC, they re-hired David Cutcliffe, who helped them get to the SEC Championship game in ‘07 (they also beat UGA the two years he was with ‘em).
However, the more I hear about Grantham, the more I want him in Athens. He’s fresh blood and has different ideas than what we’ve been doing, and his units have shown results (the Dallas D-Line is pretty good). And having a guy with solid NFL experience couldn’t hurt recruiting, either. Yeah, UF got an NFL guy as well, but you know what I mean.
Either way, I’ll be rooting for Minnesota this weekend. Go Favre, Peterson, Harvin & co!

I just wonder what kind of salary these remaining candidates are going to expect? If I’m Grantham or anybody for that matter, I gotta have that $750,000 Kirby Smart figure in the back of my mind. I mean at this point, why would they accept less knowing the job potentially paid that anyway? I see this all turning into a mess, if it’s not considered so already.
Also, what’s being made of the same situation and its possible links to ours going on at Florida right now? And at Tennessee. I mean, aren’t both of those high profile rival SEC schools still searching for someone at the same position? CMR needs to sh%t or get off the pot here.

After weeks of speculations, Georgia’s search for a new defensive coordinator may finally be coming to a close.
UGASports confirmed through multiple sources Wednesday night that Bulldog head coach Mark Richt appears to have settled on Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham.
Grantham has an offer and is expected to reach a final decision very soon.
Richt could not be reached for comment and athletic director Damon Evans refused to confirm or deny any impending hire.
“I’m not going to say a thing until a hire is made,” Evans said during halftime of Georgia’s basketball game against Ole Miss.
Calls to Grantham’s agent Neil Cornrich have not been returned.
UGASports also confirmed that Richt did reach out to former defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, but was told that Grantham is Richt’s choice to take over for the fired Willie Martinez.

Your not keeping up, dude.
Florida has already hired Strongs replacement. Some guy I’ve never heard of. Hired him on the cheap, too. Can’t be THAT much to him. With the players they lost to graduation plus all the Jr’s that jumped? They’re rebuilding, no question.
Tennessee’s problems are way bigger than ours. They have lost several recruits and will potentially lose more before signing day.
They have to hire a new HC. A permanent one, not the interim they have in place. (Kippy Brown was just hired a month ago)
The new HC will then have to start looking to fill his staff with what’s left over this late in the process…Kiffen really bent ‘em over a stump on this one. The Vols are soooo screwed.

Truthfully, I wish we were searching for another OC also. Its just something about Mike Bobo calling plays that never does anything to really surprise you. He runs 8 screens in one game, that total a gain of 5-6 yards, with 3 of the passes being incomplete. The opposing DC’s know they only have to prepare for 12 or 13 plays when playing UGA. Its safe to say last season the teams best coordinator was the special team’s coordinator (and yes I realize we didn’t have one of those, and that is exactly my point!). I remember when Bobo took over play calling for Richt, I really thought that it was going to get better. But it truly hasn’t. Without the fire that Moreno brought 2 seasons ago, how often do you remember the offense delivering a momentum changing play that was designed by the coach? Yea AJ Green made some great plays, but many of those plays would be plays that went for 35-40 yards where his YAC were 34-39 yards of it.

I was not sold on Grantham at first. But the more I read about him, he actually would not be a bad hire. He may have not done a great job when he was in Cleveland, but come on it’s Cleveland. They will always suck. But the defensive lines he has coached at Houston and Dallas were awesome. Not to mention the fact that he has coached under some great defensive coaches(Saban and Wade Phillips). If Georgia’s defense is ever going to gain it’s dominance back, they have to get a good rush from the front four. They have not done that since ‘07 when they had Marcus Howard’s speed off the edge. That is the reason the secondary has been so bad is because there is literally no rush from the line. Grantham just might be the guy to fix that problem.

He will probably be the guy although we will not have him for recruiting period. If Dallas wins Sunday, he’s locked up another 7 days at a minimum. I think being 45 minutes from his lake house is a plus. Heck, his family could live there, and he could stay at a UGA guest room during football season. At 600,000 or so it should be a nice raise. As a position coach, he’s probably making 300-350 at Dallas. Plus, he will be the man on D. On a downside, he does a good job for us and Beamer retires in 2-3 years, guess who Foster will call first to be the DC at VT.

GT Rich, moving from a position coach job to a DC opening in the SEC is not a lateral move. If it was a lateral move don’t you think the position coaches in the NFL would be making 600,000 or more? Another reason is, if he doesn’t make this move, when do you think he’s going to get another chance to run a defense? It definitely won’t be in the next 3-4 years in the NFL. The last successful DC at UGA ended up with a DC position in the league. So that along is a good selling point.

Coach Richt’s going to get 2 guys, more than likely, that way, if one leaves too soon, Coach is covered.
Hey, it worked for Batman and Robin?
Last time, Coach Richt got 2 guys he wanted, Brian Van Gorder and Willie Martinez. When Van Gorder left, Martinez plugged right in and it worked pretty well for 3 more years. It gives some continuity to the program that way.
DC will be announced first, then we’ll get guy #2 as the Plan B.

Grantham would be a great choice, but it’s a long shot. If Georgia gets him, give the man a parade. But at this point, we don’t want to get our hopes up AGAIN only to be dissapointed. Probably gonna be a couple of up and comers from a non SEC/ACC conference. The rumor folks are all usually wrong, and they’re saying Grantham, so I seriously doubt it. Look for a guy with a #1 ranked D in a non sec/acc conference, lots of choices and options. Last time, Coach Richt went for 2 lesser known names from a smaller division. You could probably get 4 of those guys, for the price of 2 bigger names.

Let’s address it this way. Is there ANY date that would make you unhappy if there is still not a DC on board. Is there any doubt in your mind that any coach hired at this point will STILL be hailed as a “great Fit and just the RIGHT man for the job. Glad it took so long because CMR got his man” You know it will be portrayed that way. Tommy Bowden or Mickey Andrews could he hired and he would be treated asTom Landry before he left the Giants to go the Cowboys in 1960.
This is why i prefer pro sports. The fan bases in college are so emotionally connected to teams they follow that they treat coaches as family–above criticis in many cases. The clown in Athens has gone 2-7 against Florida, his achievements in 9 years have been dwarfed by what Meyer has done in 5 and yet there are Georgia people who want him around forever even if he went 6-6 BECAUSE he is a good” Christian” man. Wow!! what the guy’s religion has to do with his performance evaluation and perception at a public institution as a coach is something I don’t get, BUT I like pro sports.’

Is Damon Evans trying to undermine Richt? Why not spend the big bucks to get Foster, Chavis, or Smart? Is Evans trying to get out of the contract with Richt without firing Richt? Makes you wonder if Evans wants Richt to jump to another school. Really, really bizarre the way Evans has guarded the purse. Don’t think AD is giving Richt any leverage.

There are a lot less Gators on here since Meyer “broke” and put them in a tail spin. I will not flame his Results and success at Florida, it’s been great, but that I’m outta here , I’m back, well maybe, we’ll see, ok by Sept has to have the fan base and Recruits nervous
This guy has been sleeping the last 3 weeks, hello……………………the Gators class went from great to some experts calling their incoming class the best ever assembled. Check out Rivals, Scout, and the ESPN150 and see all those “scared” Gator commits. The only people that should be nervous are SEC East teams that are going to see these boys the next 3 or 4 years. Tailspin? No, preseason #1 to 8-5 is a tailspin.

I think if CMR wants Grantham, he knows and likes something that we don’t know about yet. I totally put my trust in him. He’s paid alot of money to know what he’s doing. Only time will tell and I’m not going to write Grantham or anybody for that matter off immediately. Innocent until proven guilty!

I think Todd Grantham would be a great hire and a terrific DC. The man coached under Nick Satan once, but was smart enough that he turned him down in in request to follow him to Miami. I alo don’t fault him for the problems as DC with the Cleveland Browns. Get real people, Cleveland had not done anything since Jim Brown. It was not Grantham’s fault. I hope to read in the next few days that he is our new DC.

Hey, all us Dawg fans should calm down. We could be Tenn. or Bama 2 years down the road. Richt is stable and cares. That will keep is successful and proud. Richt will get a great DC and Ogeltree will lead the assault. On the other hand, listened to Colin Cowheard on the radio and he has a good source who said that Richt HAS to win this year, and 9 or 10 won’t cut it.

Look, give me a very successful High school coach that has a record of strong Defense with a little fire in his belly. They are a lot of very talented High school coaches that could be a lot more successful than willie. But too many fans for Ga. think that its all about a name, or a former player with one year exp. I will be happy with a GREAT high school coach.

If richt had utilized the talants in 2002 or 2007 and won a national title, he wouldn’t catch half the crap he does. In either season , one more TD in the florida game in 2002 or another TD in 2007 against South Carolna and we could’ve played for a National championship.Titles can get you alot of leniancy in those thin 8-5 seasons.

It’s obvious to me that Mark Bradley and his AJC cronies are secretly subverting (Dawg fans, that means “messing with”) UGA’s search for a DC. Travis Jones needs to join this staff, if Richt is going to get a 2 years, then gone DC named Todd Grantham. Jones recruits well and can take over the D once TG leaves for Gotham (or anywhere else) in a couple years.
If that plan falls through, I agree with the “fringe” folks that believe Kevin Greene would make an awesome LB coach. Hire him and DeRuyter from AF.

So why do people think Grantham would be good? Because he’s a d-line coach in the NFL? People mention he was the d-coordinator for the Browns — but did you think to check how the brown’s defense stacked up to the rest of the NFL during his tenure? (Perhaps this could have been an easy task for the AJC…) — check for yourself — but to save you time, the answer is not good. During his time with the browns, Grantham ensured that they were near the bottom of the NFL — if he’s hired at UGA, he’ll ensure that we’re at the bottom of the SEC….

You are really reaching huh? Maybe in 2007 instead of beating Bama 23-20 in overtime Bama beats UGA or maybe in the 20-17 win over powerhouse Vandy they squeak out a W. We could play the “If” game or the “just one more touchdown” game all day.

It is obvious to assistant coaches all over America that my Alma Mater will FINALLY put Richt out of his misery after this year. We will not get a top of the line DC because who would want to leave security and then maybe get dumped by a new coach in a year. I am not at all highly connected in Athens but I know enough people who are and they are finally tired of being an also ran to Florida and now it will be Florida and Alabama. The word is out that the 9-3 crap ain’t going to cut it anymore when two other conference schools are threats to hang matching 12-0 or 11-1’s against you. The muted scuttlebut reached a crescendo in the coaching community when our Little Lord Fauntleroy was FINALLY forced to fire a buddy. That demonstrated the gloves were off and Mark, who always bragged about not being forced to make a firing, was FINALLY forced to make a firing.
The bloom is off this rose and we should all be rejoicing. Finally get our MAN from Texas and the Little Boy who has been here can go back and play with the Bowdens. Too bad the administration feels compelled to AGAIN afford him the reality of ANOTHER missed SECCG. And PLEASE, stop the Murray talk at QB. talk to some people associated with the program and see how Murray matches up with the kid at Florida who would have probably given them a better chance against Bama. We are screwed for 1 more year but then the Will Era starts. be patient–ONLY one more 9-4 0r 8-5. doesn’t really matter.
We once were Georgia and will be Georgia again!!
